Eagles made play for Panthers’ No. 39 pick before Rams trade

The Eagles were seemingly hoping to land the 39th overall pick from the Panthers . . . until the Rams charged in.

Who says there aren’t any intense moments during the NFL draft?

On Thursday, the Philadelphia Eagles released a 23-minute look into their team’s journey through this past weekend’s draft. Included the video is a snippet that involves the Carolina Panthers—who may have been dangling the 39th overall pick over Eagles executive vice president and general manager Howie Roseman . . .

Had the Panthers reached an agreement with the Eagles, the terms would’ve looked like this:

Carolina receives: No. 50, No. 53, No. 210
Philadelphia receives: No. 39, No. 65, No. 240

Instead, the Eagles would be outbid by the Los Angeles Rams—who eventually pulled off this swap with the Panthers:

Carolina receives: No. 52, No. 155, 2025 second-round pick
Los Angeles receives: No. 39

But, as the clip shows, the missed opportunity wasn’t a complete bummer for Philly. Heck, they were better off without the trade.

The Eagles, who kept their picks, still ended up getting their guy in Iowa safety Cooper DeJean—as the Rams’ move for No. 39 was actually for Florida State defensive lineman Braden Fiske. The Panthers, meanwhile, would then package No. 52 and No. 155 to jump up to No. 46 for Texas running back Jonathon Brooks.

So, in the end, everyone wins!

Eagles rookie LB Jeremiah Trotter Jr. will continue living at home with family to save money

Philadelphia Eagles rookie linebacker revealed that he’ll live at home with his dad to help save money while in the NFL

The Eagles are going to save a ton of money on moving expenses for Jeremiah Trotter Jr., as the former Clemson star won’t be leaving home for the foreseeable future.

Drafted by Philadelphia in the fifth round of last month’s NFL draft, Trotter Jr. met the media at the NovaCare Complex for the first time ahead of the rookie minicamp camp.

Trotter Jr. was asked about his NFL transition. He said he won’t have the stress of searching for a new home since he’ll be maintaining his room at his parents’ home in South Jersey.

The familiarity should help Trotter Jr. transition to the NFL after he was named second-team All-American and first-team All-ACC in 2023 after compiling 88 tackles (15 for loss), 5.5 sacks, and two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown during his financial season at Clemson.

He’ll challenge Nakobe Dean and Devin White for reps at inside linebacker, and we’ll likely have an immediate impact on special teams.

Rams outbid Eagles by a lot for No. 39 pick in 2024 NFL draft

The Eagles tried to trade up to No. 39, but the Rams beat them out with a significantly better offer

Sean McVay said after the draft that the Los Angeles Rams were willing to do “whatever we can” to trade up for Braden Fiske in Round 2. That motivation led them to make one of the most lopsided trades in draft history, sending Carolina the 52nd pick, 155th and a 2025 second-rounder for No. 39 overall.

The Rams weren’t the only team trying to trade up with the Panthers, though, so they had some competition. Only, their competition didn’t offer nearly as much as Les Snead did. The Eagles shared a behind-the-scenes video from the draft that shows general manager Howie Roseman saying their offer to the Panthers was Nos. 39 and 65 for Nos. 50 and 53, plus a swap of picks in the sixth and seventh rounds.

Needless to say, the Rams’ offer was significantly better, giving Carolina an extra second-rounder in 2025.

The Eagles were targeting Iowa corner Cooper DeJean with their trade up, and Roseman was gutted when he found out the Rams moved up to No. 39 because he thought they were taking DeJean, too. Little did he know, they wanted Fiske – badly.

One pick later, the Eagles moved up to No. 40 for DeJean, sending the Commanders Nos. 50, 53 and 161 for 40, 78 and 152.

The Rams got their guy in Fiske and couldn’t be happier, even if it meant giving up a lot in the process. The Eagles, meanwhile, are ecstatic to have DeJean, and they had to go up one fewer spot to get him thanks to the Rams.

You can see the Eagles’ negotiations and war room talks in the video below at the 11:11 mark.

Saquon Barkley claps back at angry Giants fans: ‘Go Birds!’

Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley had some choice words for New York Giants fans after the Knicks bounced the 76ers on Thursday night.

Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley joined his teammate, wide receiver AJ Brown, courtside at the New York Knicks-Philadelphia 76ers game on Thursday night.

When cameras caught him cheering on Philly, Giants fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter, and bashed the team’s former superstar.

After getting wind of the continued hate, Barkley clapped back in a series of tweets.

“It’s been two months,” Barkley wrote. “No way ya can still be this mad! Mother (expletive) can’t even go to a basketball game.”

One fan accused Barkley of “bailing” on the Giants. Once again, the running back was quick to reply.

“Let me educate some of you fans here,” he wrote. “I can’t bail or become a traitor if I never got an offer to come back.. so I went to the organization I felt that was the best and after already being here for a month man I’m excited to be (an) Eagle! Go Birds!”

Although the Giants didn’t counter the Eagles’ free agency offer, they had attempted to re-sign Barkley long-term numerous times, including back in 2022 when he rejected an above-market deal.

Meanwhile, after getting a taste of the Philly crowd, Barkley also expressed his excitement to play at Lincoln Financial Field in 2024.

New Yorkers ultimately got the last laugh, however. Jalen Brunson dropped 41 on the night as the Knicks eliminated the 76ers on their home court.

ESPN ranks Philadelphia Eagles’ Cooper DeJean selection as top-10 NFL draft steal

An absolute steal.

Rarely do you see so many media outlets, fans, and experts view one thing with the same, common thought. In the case of Cooper DeJean, that is exactly what is happening with his NFL Draft selection.

The second round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles fell into their lap as DeJean was a first-round talent that inexplicably made his way into the second round. The Eagles snagging DeJean at No. 40 overall is being viewed as one of the top-10 picks of the entire NFL Draft by ESPN.

The Eagles did great work addressing needs in the secondary during this draft, but it’s the DeJean pick I liked best. DeJean can play either cornerback alignment and has potential as a great safety, too. The Eagles will probably get him reps right away at safety, where he’ll push for the starting nickel spot. His versatility is the key, though, as DeJean can be a true matchup player on a weekly basis. He also had seven career picks in college. – Matt Miller, ESPN

Cooper DeJean’s versatility and athleticism, which were on display his entire career with the Iowa Hawkeyes, are ideal for the NFL. Being able to slide around the secondary to multiple positions is incredibly attractive to NFL teams for unique schemes and depth.

The slide of Cooper DeJean in the draft may have been a bit unexpected, but what is not shocking is the nearly unanimous love and admiration for the type of draft pick this was.

Cooper DeJean ready to play wherever for the Philadelphia Eagles

Cooper DeJean is good playing anywhere in Philadelphia’s defensive backfield.

One of the biggest debates about Iowa defensive back Cooper DeJean has been about his position. Could he stay at the outside cornerback position where he became a unanimous consensus All-American, or would his skillset be better suited for a move to safety?

For the Philadelphia Eagles and Cooper DeJean, they couldn’t care less, just get him on the field.

On draft night, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman declined to give a specific position for his second-round draft pick.

“I think whatever he does he’s going to do at a high level,” Roseman said late Friday night. “Obviously, we’ll get him in here, and like everything else on this team, see how the pieces fit when Coach (Nick Sirianni) and his staff get their hands on these guys.”

Position changes aren’t anything new for DeJean. He came to Iowa as a safety after playing the position all throughout high school. Iowa would give him his first action on the field as a sophomore in their CASH position, the Hawkeyes’ special hybrid position that takes elements of the slot corner, safety, and linebacker positions.

DeJean excelled in the role early. Early that season, injuries to Iowa’s secondary forced DeJean to move to the outside, opposite of current Denver Bronco Riley Moss. Once again, DeJean excelled right away. The next year as a full-time starting outside cornerback, DeJean was named an unanimous consensus All-American.

Of course, this all comes after DeJean’s true passion in high school was being a quarterback. The Odebolt, Iowa, native was debating on going to schools smaller than Iowa to play quarterback until defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Phil Parker convinced him to become a Hawkeye.

For DeJean, those transitions are just normal. He isn’t locked down to one position. He’s simply a football player.

“I’m a football player,” DeJean said Friday during a Zoom interview. “You put me on the field and I’m going to go play football, whether it’s inside, outside, at safety, wherever it is.”

While he’s excited to simply get out on the field and play for the fans at Lincoln Financial Field, don’t think that DeJean wouldn’t love a shot to show everyone that he can be a lockdown corner.

But, ultimately, he’s ready to help wherever needed.

“If they put me out there, I’ll be excited to play out there on the edge at the corner position. If I don’t, there’s no hard feelings,” DeJean said.

Former Eagles RB Boston Scott agrees to a 1-year deal with Rams

Former Philadelphia Eagles running back Boston Scott is signing a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams

The Boston Scott era is officially over in Philadelphia, as the talented but smallish running back is signing a one-year deal to join the Los Angeles Rams.

Scott had been a nice underdog story, but he saw his role diminish even more for the Eagles this season, finishing with 20 carries for 86 yards and adding four catches for 52 yards through the air over 15 regular-season games.

Scott failed to reach the end zone for the first time since his two-game debut in 2018. Scott will now compete for a role in the Rams’ backfield, which has Kyren Williams as their returning leading rusher, along with former Michigan star Blake Corum and others.

WATCH: With contract extension in hand, A.J. Brown says he’ll retire as an Eagle

After signing his 3-year, $96 million contract extension, A.J. Brown told Philadelphia fans that he’ll retire an Eagle.

A.J. Brown is back in Philadelphia as the highest-paid wide receiver in NFL history after signing his new three-year, $96 million extension with the Eagles.

Brown had 106 catches for 1,456 yards and seven touchdowns last season, setting a team record for receptions in a season by a wideout, while his running mate DeVonta Smith logged 81 catches for 1,066 yards and seven touchdowns.

After signing his deal, Brown had a message for fans: When he hangs his cleats up, he’ll retire as an Eagle.

This offseason, Philadelphia has signed Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Smith, Brown and Jake Elliott to contract extensions that will keep the Eagles’ core together for years.
