Missing the cut: Which Tiger had the best chance to be the cover athlete for NCAA Football 17?

Rudy Ford, Kris Frost, and Carlton Davis each had a great shot at being a cover athlete for NCAA Football 17… if EA Sports had released the game.

Many sports video game fans across the country (including myself) were excited to learn that the NCAA Football franchise is on track to return to our lives in the summer of 2024, which will be re-named “EA Sports College Football.”

Plans for the game were threatened to be delayed due to a lawsuit from The Brandr Group, citing that the franchise’s $500 million pool, which would give each athlete represented in the game $500, was considered to be “far below market value.”

Despite the setback, EA Sports remains on schedule to release the game next summer.

“We’re incredibly excited to bring back an authentic college football experience for fans and athletes that have shown such passion for the franchise, and we’re looking forward to delivering it in Summer 2024,” an EA spokesperson tells On3’s Pete Nakos.

It has been ten years since the release of the last game, NCAA Football 14. It has us at Auburn Wire thinking… which Auburn athletes missed out on being a cover athlete for the famous video game franchise?

Our pick for the hypothetical cover of NCAA Football 15 was [autotag]Chris Davis[/autotag], and we selected [autotag]Cameron Artis-Payne[/autotag] to represent Auburn on the cover of NCAA Football 16. Now, it is time to share our selection for NCAA Football 17.

The 2015 season was not kind to Auburn, especially in SEC play. Auburn ended the year with a 7-6 record and a Birmingham Bowl win over Memphis. When it came to production, the Tigers relied heavily on their defense. [autotag]Rudy Ford[/autotag] led the team in several categories, which leads him to be our candidate to represent Auburn on the cover of NCAA Football 17 if the game had been released.

Ford made 116 stops in 2015, becoming the first Tiger to record 100 or more tackles since [autotag]Daren Bates[/autotag] and [autotag]Neiko Thorpe[/autotag] accomplished the feat by making 104 and 102 tackles respectively in 2011. Ford also pulled down two interceptions and forced two fumbles.

Other cover athlete candidates from the 2015 season include [autotag]Carlton Davis[/autotag] and [autotag]Kris Frost[/autotag]. Frost was second in tackles with 96, while Davis led the team in interceptions with three. Offensively, [autotag]Peyton Barber[/autotag] rushed for 1,017 yards and scored 13 touchdowns.

Here are some of the best images from each cover candidate from Auburn for the hypothetical “NCAA Football 2017” video game that would have been released ahead of the 2016 football season.

Throwback Thursday: Peyton Barber runs wild on San Jose State

Peyton Barber was the hero in Auburn’s last meeting with San Jose State, which ended with a 35-21 victory in 2015.

The Auburn Tigers look to boost their record to 2-0 on Saturday as they host the San Jose State Spartans at 6:30 p.m. CT at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Saturday will mark the third time that Auburn and San Jose State have met on the football field. Auburn first met San Jose State on Sept. 6, 2014, at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Quarterback [autotag]Nick Marshall[/autotag] and running back [autotag]Cameron Artis-Payne[/autotag] each rushed for over 100 yards while [autotag]Montravious Adams[/autotag] recorded three tackles for loss in Auburn’s 59-13 win.

The very next season, Auburn met San Jose State after suffering through a tough three-game stretch. After scraping by Jacksonville State in overtime in week two, Auburn went on to drop two straight contests to LSU and Mississippi State before hosting the Spartans in week five of the 2015 season.

Auburn’s running game would go on to step up in a huge way, as the Tigers would take down San Jose State, 35-21. Running back [autotag]Peyton Barber[/autotag] scored all of Auburn’s points, rushing for five touchdowns and 147 yards on 28 carries.

Auburn would go on to finish the season with a 7-6 record and would defeat Memphis in the Birmingham Bowl, 31-10 at season’s end.

Here is a look at the best images from Auburn’s last meeting with San Jose State on October 3, 2015.

Auburn football’s all-time record vs. Mountain West teams

Auburn faces San Jose State at Jordan-Hare Stadium this Saturday. How has Auburn fared historically against the Spartans’ home conference?

As the days continue to dwindle down to the opening day of the College Football season, Auburn Wire will take a look at each nonconference opponent that Auburn football will face this season and break down its’ history against teams in their opponents’ home conference.

This edition takes a look at the Mountain West Conference, home of Auburn’s second nonconference foe, San Jose State.

Auburn will face the Spartans at 6:30 p.m. CDT on Sept. 10 at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The game has been scheduled to take place since 2019, when Auburn agreed to pay San Jose State a cool $1.85 million to travel across the country to play.

The next meeting between the Tigers and Spartans will be the third meeting all-time between these two squads, all three being played on the Plains.

Auburn welcomed San Jose State to town for the first time in the school’s history on Sept. 10, 2014, as the second game on the schedule.

Auburn had just come off of a national championship appearance in 2013 and opened the season with a convincing 45-21 win over the Arkansas Razorbacks a week prior. Auburn struck first when [autotag]Nick Marshall[/autotag] completed a four-yard touchdown pass to [autotag]Ricardo Louis[/autotag] to give Auburn the 7-0 lead with 8:15 remaining in the opening quarter.

San Jose State quickly answered when Blake Jurich found Tyler Ervin 75-yards downfield to tie the game at 7-7 just 12 seconds after Auburn got on the board.

Auburn scored 28 unanswered points before the Spartans struck for another touchdown in the first half, and would go on to score three more times in the second half to win, 59-13.

The result of the second-ever meeting between these two squads one year later was a little too close to comfort for Auburn.

Auburn entered the game feeling tons of pressure after squeaking by FCS’ Jacksonville State at home and losing two straight games to LSU and Mississippi State in three consecutive weeks. Auburn really needed a dominating win to rebuild confidence in the program heading into the rest of the season.

[autotag]Peyton Barber[/autotag] led the way for Auburn offensively by rushing for 151 yards and all five of Auburn’s touchdowns in the Tigers’ 35-21 win over San Jose State. Auburn jumped out to a 21-7 halftime lead, but did not see a surge in the second half to run away and put the blowout into effect.

Although brief, Auburn does have a history against teams currently affiliated with the Mountain West Conference, sporting a perfect 5-0 record all-time against the conference. Here is a look at Auburn Football’s history against the Mountain West:

Former Auburn legendary QB weighing all options in NFL Free Agency

Former Auburn Quarterback not rushing to make a decision on his future in the NFL

Former Auburn quarterback and NFL free agent [autotag]Cam Newton[/autotag] has yet to make a decision on where he will play next season.

According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, Cam Newton is remaining patient with the entire signing process. Newton stated, “I have teams that are interested in signing me. I am waiting on the best fit as it pertains to winning a championship and getting a fair chance to play.” There has been no speculation as to what teams are interested in Newton.

Last season, Newton started in five games for the Carolina Panthers. He passed for 684 yards with four touchdowns. Along with that, he also rushed for 230 yards for five touchdowns. Although his production hasn’t been the same since his first stint with the Panthers, he has still been somewhat productive as a backup over the years.

The three-time Pro Bowler and 2015 MVP is among several former Tigers that are still available in free agency. Some of the players still available with Auburn roots are [autotag]Peyton Barber[/autotag], [autotag]Josh Bynes[/autotag], [autotag]Brandon King[/autotag], and [autotag]Darren Bates[/autotag].

Some teams to keep an eye on when it comes to landing Newton are the Commanders, 49ers, Browns, and Broncos. It is also worth noting that Newton has been made aware that the Panthers are open to re-signing him. As of now, he is exploring all of his options before making the best decision for himself. Whether he is a backup or a starter, he certainly will look to revitalize his career. It will be interesting to see who signs Newton and the role that he will have on the team that he chooses.

Raiders RB Peyton Barber could miss several weeks with turf toe

Raiders RB Peyton Barber could miss several weeks with turf toe

Monday night saw the return of Josh Jacobs to the Raiders lineup. And it was a good thing too because on one snap, the team lost Peyton Barber to a toe injury. And according to Ian Rapoport it’s the dreaded turf toe, which could have him out for a bit.

Jacobs being back gave the Raiders a feature back, but his injured ankle is still clearly not 100% and he was hurting during the game. That makes the Barber injury significant because he was the guy who was going to keep Jacobs from having to carry too much of the load, at least until that ankle improved.

While Jacobs was out, Barber played fairly well, including putting up a career-high 111 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries in  the team’s overtime win over the Dolphins in week three. He had just signed to the team last month and as he got more and more acclimated to the offense, he figured to share more of the load. Looks like that won’t happen now.

The Raiders also have Kenyan Drake at running back, but he is used almost exclusively as a receiver out of the backfield.

Can Chargers run defense get on right track against Raiders?

Getting Justin Jones back would be big for the Chargers, who currently rank dead last in rush defense.

The Chargers currently boast the seventh-best pass defense, only allowing 201.7 yards per game. Against the run, on the other hand, is where the team has struggled immensely – allowing 170 yards per game, which marks the worst in the NFL.

One of the primary reasons Los Angeles has been susceptible on the ground lies along the defensive line. Interior defenders have not been able to eat up blocks, and with them getting pushed off the ball, massive holes have been created.

A lot of that has to do with the lack of talent in the trenches. However, the team could be getting a boost for this week’s game against the Raiders with the potential return of Justin Jones.

After missing the last two games with a calf issue, Jones returned to practice on Thursday. Before getting hurt, Jones showed flashes in the season opener against Washington, as seen below.

Jones was arguably the team’s best run defender the last two seasons, finishing with 39 run stops combined. He has shown the power to control the point of attack and the body control and quickness to beat single blockers.

Heading into the Monday night matchup, Las Vegas hasn’t been a team to impose defenses on the ground, only averaging 91.3 yards per game. Potentially without running back Joshua Jacobs, their game plan could still be to run the ball more often than usual, with Peyton Barber as the lead guy.

Jones should aid the rush defense, but he will still need assistance from his fellow teammates in order to get that area on the right track. Therefore, the second and third levels need to take proper angles to the football, stay off blockers and be low-man-wins tacklers with stopping power.

If they can minimize the Raiders’ rushing attack, the Chargers have the recipe to neutralize quarterback Derek Carr, just like they did against Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes last weekend, holding him to one of the least productive performances of his career.

Raiders RB Josh Jacobs won’t play vs Steelers

Raiders RB Josh Jacobs won’t play vs Steelers, Peyton Barber expected to step up.

After missing the entire week of practices with a toe injury, Raiders RB Josh Jacobs will not play vs the Steelers in week two. He played hurt last week against the Ravens, scoring two touchdowns in an overtime win. But he won’t be able to give it a go again this week.

Jon Gruden said in his Friday press conference that it’s recently signed RB Peyton Barber who will see increased snaps with Jacobs out.

“It’s an opportunity for Peyton Barber. We really like Barber. We think he’s a heck of a back. Coming from Tampa I’ve had a chance to really get behind the scenes on him. And I like the way he runs and catches and picks up blitzes. And Kenyan [Drake] will continue to play a role in our system no matter who the other back is. We’re excited about this opportunity to see what we have.”

Barber was active for Monday’s game along with undrafted rookie Trey Ragas. But neither back saw the field. Drake saw six carries and five targets. His five catches went for 59 yards while he gained just 11 yards on his six carries (1.8 yards per carry).

Las Vegas Raiders sign RB Peyton Barber off Washington’s practice squad

Las Vegas signed Peyton Barber off Washington’s practice squad on Friday. It’s not a difficult loss for the WFT.

The Washington Football Team lost running back Peyton Barber from their practice squad on Friday when the Las Vegas Raiders signed him to their active roster, per Ben Standig of The Athletic.

Barber was expected to be Washington’s No. 3 running back again in 2021, but undrafted rookie Jaret Patterson beat him out for a roster spot, and Washington released Barber. The team quickly re-signed him to the practice squad one day later.

In 16 games last season, Barber rushed 94 times for 258 yards and four touchdowns. He was utilized as Washington’s short-yardage back for the entire season.

For his five-year career, Barber has carried the ball 645 times for 2,245 yards and 19 touchdowns. He has 19 career touchdowns. Barber has averaged 3.5 yards per attempt for his career.

This isn’t a major loss for Washington. Running backs like Barber can be signed off the street or other practice squads at any time during the season. It was a surprise Las Vegas coach Jon Gruden would even choose to sign Barber.

Starter Antonio Gibson will likely handle short-yardage situations in 2021.

Washington announces 15 players signed to the practice squad

Washington announced 15 players have signed to the practice squad. All are familiar names.

The Washington Football Team announced their official 53-man roster on Tuesday. Washington had to release some talented players to get down to its final 53, including former draft choices.

So, on Wednesday, it was no surprise when the Football Team announced their practice squad that it was comprised of many of the players who were recently released. In fact, all 15 members of Washington’s first 2021 practice squad are players who were with Washington over the summer.

Players like wide receiver Antonio Gandy-Golden, a fourth-round pick in 2020. Head coach Ron Rivera described how tough it was to release Gandy-Golden on Tuesday. Now, he’s back.

Running back Peyton Barber, who was Washington’s short-yardage back in 2020, is also back.

Washington can sign 16 players to its practice squad, yet announced just 15 players on Wednesday. Washington could opt to fill that spot later.

Here are the 15 players who signed with Washington’s practice squad on Wednesday.
