Twitter reacts to Notre Dame’s first lacrosse national championship

Hope you love this championship as much as these people do.

If you win a national championship at Notre Dame, you’re going to be remembered forever. The 2023 men’s lacrosse team entered university immortality Monday when it defeated Duke in the national championship game. It was their first time winning the national title after two previous runner-up finishes.

Let this serve as a reminder that every athletic program at Notre Dame deserves your support and not only during moments like this. These student-athletes and coaches work just as hard as those in the football or basketball programs. This is their life, and it’s great to see that rewarded.

If you think no one cares about Notre Dame athletics that aren’t football or basketball, think again. There are so many people either employed by the university or simply a supporter of the university who were hoping to see the Irish defeat the Blue Devils. They got their wish, and they took to Twitter afterwards to show how happy they were:

Mike Brey will not coach at USF after all

Stop the presses.

When it was reported that former Notre Dame coach [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag] was about to take over the USF program, reactions were mixed. They ranged from being happy for him to wondering what the heck he was thinking. Whatever one thought, it’s time to throw it all out the window. ESPN’s Pete Thamel has reported that USF’s interest in Brey was just that, and Brey won’t be coaching anywhere next season:

After 28 consecutive seasons of being a head coach at Delaware and then Notre Dame, it probably is best for Brey to take time for himself. Don’t even consider the possibility that he still will help pick his successor with the Irish. He deserves to move to Florida anyway and spend time drinking pina coladas, laying on the beach or whatever. It will be nice to see him on TV in some capacity, but it will be even better knowing he has enough time to detox after so many years in a high-stress job.

Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann ‘not going to Notre Dame’

Scratch one name off the list.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel recently gave his list of potential names to fill Notre Dame’s coaching vacancy. One of those names was Chris Holtmann of Ohio State, who recently had a streak of 20-win seasons in Columbus come to an end. You can scratch him off that list because he told the Columbus Dispatch that he’s not going anywhere. Specifically pertaining to the Irish job, he said this:

“I’m not going to Notre Dame. I stand by what I publicly said. I’m committed to being here.”

As the Dispatch story notes, Holtmann is a year removed from signing a contract extension that keeps with the Buckeyes through the 2027-28 season. He currently has a $2.5 million buyout, and we have no idea how much Notre Dame is willing to buy out a coach if necessary. The athletic department is just coming off a misinformation fiasco with its offensive coordinator hire for the football program, so it better choose wisely in the event of a buyout.

Pete Thamel lists four coaches who could fill Notre Dame opening

Would you like one of these coaches?

Since [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag] announced his intention to leave Notre Dame in January, various names have floated as his replacement. Our own Nick Shepkowski made his own list of candidates in the immediate aftermath of Brey’s announcement. While it’s nice to keep all options open, it appears the list is starting to narrow down. At least that’s what ESPN’s Pete Thamel said he believes during the most recent episode of College GameDay:

For all we know, this list could be completely bogus with none of the four landing the job. But when you cover college basketball for a living, you’re bound to hear a few whispers about who the next coach might be. For argument’s sake, let’s pretend this list is legitimate and that the search indeed will come down to these four. Then, we can debate as to who would be the best candidate for the Irish for the long haul:

Transfer Profile: 5 things to know about Oregon’s newest offensive lineman Junior Angilau

The Ducks not only got a starting-caliber OL in Junior Angilau, but it appears they got a top-notch locker room guy as well.

It’s not often an offensive lineman with 34 career starts becomes available through the transfer portal. So when Oregon saw former Texas Longhorn lineman Junior Angilau show interest in being a Duck, head coach Dan Lanning worked his magic.

Angilau announced Tuesday night that we would indeed move from Austin to Eugene. It couldn’t have come at a better time for the Ducks. They are coming off a season with a veteran offensive line to 2023 where there are bound to be a few question marks after losing four starters.

Having Angilau in the program and being able to put him anywhere along that line will be a huge plus for the Ducks. With quarterback Bo Nix returning for one more season, having an experienced line protect him will be even more important. We all saw what that looked like and the results were really good.

Here are five things to know about Oregon’s newest lineman in charge of protecting the Ducks’ Heisman contender:

Clemson Google corrects ESPN report

During a segment about Clemson on ESPN’s College GameDay, Pete Thamel spoke about the Tigers “staring at a two-year cold snap” in terms of missing the College Football Playoff after appearing in the playoff every season from 2015-20.

Thamel talked about the Tigers investing heavily from the outside in their coordinator hires in the past, bringing in Brent Venables as the defensive coordinator and Chad Morris as the offensive coordinator.

“That helped chart the course of that great Clemson run,” Thamel said.

He then spoke about Swinney doubling down on internal hires ahead of this season, promoting Brandon Streeter to OC and Wes Goodwin to DC.

“It’s easy to say with Clemson not in the top three in offense or defense in ACC play that the sum of the talent there is not greater than the parts,” Thamel said, “and a fair question to ask as this season closes is whether Dabo Swinney needs to go back outside to begin another streak of playoff appearances.”

After Thamel posted the video from his GameDay segment on Twitter, he was called out by former longtime Clemson sports information director Tim Bourret.

Bourret, also affectionately known by many as “Clemson Google”, corrected Thamel’s report.

“No mention in the segment that Clemson was not in the National championship picture until Chad Morris left and Dabo promoted from within (Tony Elliott and Jeff Scott) to run offense,” Bourret wrote on Twitter. “Only offensive coordinator combo to take a team to five straight CFPs.”

Pete Thamel reports “zero evidence” of Jimbo Fisher’s dismissal, but changes may be coming

Pete Thamel reports “zero evidence” of Jimbo Fisher’s dismissal, but staff changes may be on their way

The Aggies have got to be immune to media headlines by now, especially after the week they’ve had to start with the suspension of three freshman players, and ending with the announcement of freshman quarterback Conner Weigman announced as the starter for the Ole Miss game, making his first career start in his Texas A&M career.

Well, fasten your seatbelt, because as soon as the 2022 season comes to a close for the maroon and white, changes are coming, but there is one potential change that you can officially close the book on according to ESPN insider Pete Thamel, who spoke about the program’s imminent future to the College Gameday Crew this morning:

“With Texas A&M owing Jimbo Fisher $86 million, there is zero discussion in moving on from him, but there will be changes in staff style and likely offensive play calling moving forward in College Station. What will that look like? Could A&M modernize its offense and use more tempo? I’ve been told that everything’s on the table at Texas A&M. One factor for A&M is that Jimbo Fisher’s offense is famously complicated. This has to be simplified in order streamline your talent to the field, obviously, Texas A&M has shown the ability to procure the young talent, but now they need to find a way to get those good young players on the field and be immediately productive.”

So there it is, head coach Jimbo Fisher, still one of the better coaches and recruiters in the country, is poised to keep his position but will need to evaluate his current staff, and most likely search for a competent, progressive offensive coordinator to help push the offense forward while utilizing every bit of talent the program recruits year to year.

‘Kirk’s got to fire his kid’: College GameDay’s Pat McAfee on Iowa’s Brian Ferentz

Pat McAfee said it’s time for Iowa to fire Brian Ferentz. Meanwhile, Pete Thamel offered up a different solution to Iowa’s problems.

One of the most popular sports media personalities today is Pat McAfee. He of course hosts the show with his namesake on YouTube and is a member of College GameDay’s panel.

While previewing Week 9 action and getting fans set for Saturday’s slate of games, McAfee served up some thoughts on the Hawkeyes’ current state of affairs. He didn’t hold back in regard to Iowa offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brian Ferentz.

McAfee outright said it’s time for Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz to fire his son. His full comments are included below along with what Pete Thamel had to say about Iowa, Texas A&M and Miami.

SEC instructs Georgia, Tennessee to cancel upcoming series with OU

News on the OU-Texas move to the SEC could be coming soon with the SEC instructing Georgia, Tennessee to cancel upcoming matchups with OU.

We’ve got something big here, Sooners fans. The SEC has instructed Georgia and Tennessee to not play their upcoming games against Oklahoma. The Bulldogs were scheduled to play the Sooners in Norman next season and the Volunteers were originally scheduled to come to Norman in 2020.

This points to one thing: The SEC plans to have the Sooners in the SEC next year. With a few dates being thrown around, there wasn’t really a concrete answer on when OU and Texas planned to leave the Big 12, although 2025 was when the Big 12 media rights deal expired.

Pete Thamel of ESPN broke the news.

ESPN Chairman James Pitaro has said that the Sooners and Longhorns will remain where they are until 2025 as well.

Houston, BYU, UCF and Cincinnati are scheduled to join the Big 12 in July of next year, and while it was an interesting idea, it was always hard to see the Sooners and Longhorns sticking around to play in a 14-team Big 12.

Here is the official statement from the SEC.

The Southeastern Conference has directed the University of Georgia and the University of Tennessee to postpone scheduled football games versus Oklahoma because the transition of Oklahoma into the SEC will not allow for the involved institutions to fulfill their respective contractual non-conference home-and-home appearance obligations.

Because the second non-conference game in each of the Georgia-Oklahoma and Tennessee-Oklahoma series is scheduled to take place after Oklahoma joins the SEC in 2025, the Conference is directing the postponement of the Georgia at Oklahoma game in 2023 and the Oklahoma at Tennessee game in 2024 until such time that those matchups become part of the Conference rotation of games in future years.

Brent Venables would go into the SEC with a valuable year of head coaching experience and hopefully back-to-back top 10 recruiting classes.

This story is only the first domino to fall. There will be many more things to come out before a move date is made official. Until then, the Sooners and Longhorns are in the Big 12.
