Perfect Game ranks Florida baseball’s 2024 recruiting class in top 10

Florida only lost two of 15 signees to the MLB draft this summer, and Perfect Game says the Gators have on of the top-10 freshmen classes heading into 2025.

Perfect Game released its post-draft recruiting rankings for the class of 2024, and Florida checks in at No. 10 overall in the country.

Thirteen of 15 Florida commits from the class of 2024 made it to campus, with Kellon Lindsey signing with the Dodgers as a first-round pick and 16th-rounder Jayden Dubanewicz opting to sign with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Lindsey’s departure was expected, but Dubanewicz was on campus before deciding to turn pro. Had both players made it to Gainesville, Florida would be ranked No. 6 on this list.

Bringing in the 10th-ranked recruiting class in the country might not seem like a win for Kevin O’Sullivan and his staff, considering the lofty standards set over the past few years, but a closer look reveals that UF has signed one of the most talent-rich classes in the country.

To determine the team recruiting rankings, Perfect Game assigns points to players based on their individual player rankings. Top-50 recruits are worth 15 points, Nos. 51-100 are worth 12 points, Nos. 101-150 are 10 points and the trend continues through the top 500 players. players ranked between Nos. 501-1,000 are worth two points, and “high follows” are worth one.

Add all those numbers up and divide by the amount of recruits, and you get the average points per player. Florida is one of one of seven teams with an average above 7.00. Only LSU’s superclass (12.00), Auburn (8.86) and Tennessee (8.30) have a higher average.

Which freshmen will make an early impact?

This is a pitcher-heavy class for Florida, so expect one of the many righties to take over a bullpen role this season. Right-handers Jackson Barberi (No. 49), Schuyler Sandford (No.72) and Joshua Whritenour (No. 85) are the three highest-ranked arms in the class, but Sandford is recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Florida returns just two lefties from 2024, which could lead to an early window for McCall Biemiller (No. 405).

There’s also Key West alum Felix Ong and Bishop Snyder’s former ace Aidan King to consider. Both are in the 350-450 range on Perfect Game’s player rankings, but they’ll likely get some innings.

As for position players, Brendan Lawson and Kolt Myers are both listed as shortstops, but it’s going to be difficult for either to see consistent playing time with Colby Shelton and Cade Kurland locking up the middle infield.

Still, Kevin O’Sullivan should find ways to get them some early-season at-bats considering they are the future of Florida’s infield.

Niko Janssens is another interesting case as well. He’s listed as a two-way player for Florida and was clocked at 95 mph from the left side almost a year ago. He’s the closest thing to Jac Caglianone Florida has in the 2024 class, and UF could certainly use a power lefty on the mound and at the plate. The path to playing time as a pitcher looks far more clear than it does at first, though.

Outfielder Jordi Guerrero and catcher Brock Clayton are the final two position players to consider. Both seem like good redshirt candidates at this point.

LSU baseball commit named National High School Player of the Year

Konnor Griffin may not make it to campus as he’s a possible top-10 pick.

One of the most prolific players in high school baseball this season has added a new honor to his name. [autotag]Konnor Griffin[/autotag] has been named the [autotag]National High School Player of the Year[/autotag] by [autotag]Perfect Game[/autotag].

Griffin is committed to playing for [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] and the LSU Tigers next season but the fact is that he may never make it to the Bayou. Griffin is the No. 9 overall player in the draft according to MLB.com’s prospect rankings for the [autotag]2024 MLB draft[/autotag]. He is the No. 1 prospect in the Prep Rankings.

Griffin had a mind-blowing Senior season at Jackson Prep. The Patriots went 39-4 and won the state championship in their class. Griffin finished the season with a .559 batting average, a .690 on-base percentage, nine homers, 76 runs scored and 87 stolen bases.

As much as I want to see this guy in purple and gold next season, I believe he will be one of the top 10 picks in the 2024 MLB Draft.

Jac Caglianone named Perfect Game Two-Way Player of the Year

Jac Caglianone is taking home the Perfect Game Two-Way Player of the Year Award for the second year in a row.

For the second year in a row, Florida’s [autotag]Jac Caglianone[/autotag] is the Perfect Game Two-Way Player of the Year, following an official announcement on Tuesday.

“Caglianone has run away with this award and (he) took things to another level with his comprehensive skillset,” national crosschecker Vincent Cervino said. “The 6-5/250 physically imposing lefty from Tampa, FL refined his game this year by improving his bat head accuracy and dialing in the strike zone on the mound.”

Caglianone matched his power numbers from a year ago and refined the other metrics scouts had questions about.

“Heading to the College World Series, he is batting .411 with 33 home runs and 68 RBI while slugging .860, reaching base over 50% of his at-bats and accumulating an OPS of 1.392 so far.”

Cervino noted that Caglianone’s improved pitch selection is one of the biggest reasons for his success this year. His 52-to-25 strikeout-to-walk ratio is proof that Caglianone’s eye has refined, and his splits against lefties aren’t bad considering the historical trend.

There’s also the pitching…

“On the mound, he is currently 5-2 in his 15 starts with a 4.71 ERA and limited opponents to a .225 batting average. While he can still run the fastball into the upper-90s, he dialed things back a bit and put more value on location and secondary offering this year. In 72.2 IP so far, he has a strikeout-to-walk ration of 82:48 and has minimized damage by blending his pitches at a high level.”

Caglianone’s success as a pitcher was always going to come when he learned to control his fastball. It’s no surprise that a 94-mph fastball is easier to control than one coming in just shy of triple digits, and most college hitters struggle with the mid-90s.

This might be the first of several two-way awards won by Caglianone as the college baseball season draws to a close. The College Baseball Foundation will announce the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award on June 18.

Oklahoma falls to No. 22 in latest D1Baseball poll

Oklahoma lost a tough series to Texas but still remain a top 25 team with a chance to earn the number one seed in the Big 12.

After a 2-2 week, the Oklahoma Sooners slid a few spots in the latest D1Baseball poll.

Oklahoma had a monumental matchup with their Red River rivals, the Texas Longhorns, but the Sooners couldn’t secure a series victory. Oklahoma remains the top team in the Big 12 with a 15-6 conference record, but that lead is down to just one game in the loss column. Oklahoma State and West Virginia are right behind the Sooners at 14-7.

Oklahoma comes in at No. 22 in the latest poll and will get a chance to bounce back this week with games against Oral Roberts and a road series against Texas Tech.

The top three schools in this poll are future SEC foes, Texas A&M, Arkansas, and Tennessee. The ACC’s best team, Clemson, is No. 4 in the country, while East Carolina rounds out the top five. Oregon State comes in at six, while Florida State, Kentucky, UC Irvine, and Duke round out the top 10.

Oklahoma State is No. 14 in the poll and the only other Big 12 team to earn a spot in this week’s ranking.

Elsewhere, Baseball America ranks the Sooners 19th, while Perfect Game USA doesn’t have OU in its top 25.

Oklahoma rejoins D1Baseball top 25 at No. 18 after undefeated week

OU is riding a seven game winning streak and went from being unranked to the highest ranked Big 12 team in this week’s D1Baseball poll.

Oklahoma took its first and last trip to Provo as Big 12 baseball members and walked away with a sweep. It was the Sooners’ fourth sweep in conference play and helped push OU back into the D1Baseball Top 25.

The Sooners went from unranked to No. 18 in the latest D1Baseball poll after their showing against the Cougars. Their performance cemented their first-place spot in the Big 12 and extended their win streak to seven straight games.

Oklahoma has been on a heater as they pushed out to a 14-4 Big 12 record, three games clear of three teams tied for second place.

The Sooners are one of two Big 12 teams in the Top 25, along with their in-state foes, Oklahoma State. Texas A&M, Arkansas, and Tennessee are the top three in that order. Kentucky, Clemson, and Duke round out the top six. East Carolina, Wake Forest, Oregon State, and the Florida State Seminoles round out the top 10.

Oklahoma State is just three spots back of Oklahoma at No. 19. The Cowboys dropped four spots after a 1-3 week on the diamond.

Oklahoma is ranked 16th by Baseball America, while Perfect Game has the Sooners ranked 23rd in their latest rankings.

The Sooners will continue its pursuit of the Big 12 regular season title and the top seed in the Big 12 tournament as it hosts Wichita State for a midweek game on Tuesday and will host Red River rivals Texas for a weekend series.

Four Florida freshmen on Perfect Game’s 2026 Draft Board

Florida’s freshman class has a ton of talent, and four players are getting draft mentions early on in their collegiate careers.

The college baseball season is in full swing, which means scouts are getting in-game looks at the guys who will make up the bulk of the 2026 MLB draft.

Four Florida freshmen are standing out so far and made Perfect Game’s first in-season 2026 Draft Board.

Saturday starter Liam Peterson is looking like a first-round pick and checks in at No. 6 on this list. He’s considered the top college arm in the class, with Arkansas’ Gabe Gaeckle and LSU’s Cameron Johnson close behind. Peterson has struggled lately, but he’s still a freshman facing SEC lineups. That kind of experience is invaluable for a talented arm.

At No. 28 on the list is left-handed reliever Frank Menendez. Although his numbers haven’t been good through five appearances (20.25 ERA over 1.1 innings pitched), he’s flashed some good stuff as he finds his footing on a college mound. The Gators have used him in high-leverage and matchup situations mostly.

Right-hander Luke McNeillie is at No. 47 on the list. He started the season as a potential midweek starter for Florida, but he’s looked better in relief situations. There’s closer potential in him, but he’s got starter stuff, similar to Brandon Neely.

Rounding out the quarter of Gators on this list is outfielder Hayden Yost at No. 65 overall. Yost has appeared in more than half of Florida’s games so far, including two midweek starts against Bethune-Cookman and UCF. Yost’s glove will play at the college level, perhaps in center field, and he’s figuring things out at the plate.

After massive sweep of No. 18 TCU, OU baseball lands in D1Baseball’s top 25 at No. 17

Oklahoma lands in D1Baseball’s Top 25 for the first time this season after sweeping No.18 TCU.

This OU baseball team has been playing some inspired baseball recently. The Sooners have now reeled off back-to-back conference sweeps to start the 2024 conference schedule.

Despite a midweek loss to their Bedlam rivals Oklahoma State, the Sooners went 4-1 last week. Their conquest of the TCU Horned Frogs in Fort Worth raised plenty of eyebrows and was more than enough for the Sooners to go from unranked to No. 17 in the latest D1Baseball Top 25.

TCU was No. 12 in the country when the Sooners played this weekend, and now they are 18th, directly behind the Sooners. With Oklahoma’s inclusion into the mix, the Big 12 has two teams in the top 25. Texas and Texas Tech both fell out in this latest update after each team lost two games last week.

At the top, Arkansas remains the nation’s number-one team. Oregon State is behind them, followed by perennial powerhouse Vanderbilt at three—Clemson, LSU, and Florida slot in at four, five, and six. Texas A&M, Tennessee, Duke, and ECU round out the top 10.

The Sooners also were ranked 14th by Baseball America and 18th by Perfect Game USA.

After four straight wins against teams from the state of Texas, Oklahoma will look to keep it going on Tuesday at L. Dale Mitchell Park for a midweek matchup vs. No. 15 Dallas Baptist on Tuesday night. Dallas Baptist beat Oklahoma earlier this season, 11-7, when the two met in Dallas for a midweek affair.

Duke now top ACC team at No. 6 in latest D1Baseball poll, the highest rank in school history

Duke ascends to No. 6 in latest D1Baseball poll after a series victory over top-ranked Wake Forest, the highest ranking in program history.

Duke’s series win over the then-No. 1 Wake Forest Demon Deacons sent some pretty sizable ripples through the rest of the collegiate baseball landscape.

The series win vindicated Duke as a team that everyone should be cognizant of going forward, and it also sent a message to the rest of the ACC that things will not be a breeze for Wake Forest to just coast to a regular-season title.

Duke made the trip from Durham, NC, to Winston-Salem this past weekend and took two of three from the previously top-ranked Demon Deacons. That win had a massive effect on the latest D1Baseball poll.

Duke is now the highest-ranked ACC team in the country, having leaped from 12th to 6th, which marks the highest ranking in program history by D1Baseball.

Duke had a 3-1 week in total, which started with a 28-2 dismantling of the Appalachian State Mountaineers in the middle of the week before they made their trip to take on Wake Forest to open ACC play.

Arkansas is now the No. 1-ranked team in the country. Wake Forest dropped six spots to seventh.

Elsewhere in the ACC, Clemson remains steady at 10th after another undefeated week of action. NC State moved up one spot to No. 13 in the newest poll. UNC also moved up one place, going from 16th to 15th. Virginia suffered two losses to the Miami Hurricanes last week and fell four spots from 13th to 17th.

In their latest rankings, Baseball America ranked Duke No. 3, and Perfect Game ranked the Blue Devils No. 5.

The Blue Devils will continue its journey to ascend into the top five with two midweek games against Rider starting Tuesday. They follow that up with another top-10 matchup as Clemson gets set to come to town to start a three-game set on Friday.

Florida baseball drops in rankings after opening weekend

Opening weekend did not go as planned for Florida baseball, and the Gators have dropped in the rankings as a result.

The college baseball season began this weekend, and now the world has an idea of what each team in the country has to offer. As a result, the various rankings across college baseball have received an update, and Florida’s 0-1 series loss to St. John’s has the Gators moving down those lists.

D1Baseball dropped Florida from No. 2 overall to No. 4, Baseball America dropped UF from No. 4 to No. 5 and Perfect Game moved Florida from No. 2 to No. 6, according to a graphic posted on social media.

It’s only natural for Florida to take a dip in these rankings after a rough opening weekend. The Gators lost on opening night, 9-5, and the other two games in the series were canceled due to weather.

Florida has a chance to get back to .500 quickly with a Tuesday matchup with a home-and-home series against North Florida on Tuesday and Wednesday. Then, the Gators host Columbia — an NCAA Tournament team from a year ago — for a bit of a test.
