LSU lands transfer linebacker from Texas

The Tigers landed veteran Ovie Oghoufo on Thursday.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and the LSU staff received some great news on Thursday when they found out Texas senior linebacker [autotag]Ovie Oghoufo[/autotag] has decided to take his talents to Baton Rouge.

In two seasons as a Longhorn, Oghoufo has 96 tackles, 4.5 sacks for 15 yards, five passes deflected, and two forced fumbles. LSU needed the pick-me-up after linebacker [autotag]Zavier Carter[/autotag] entered his name into the transfer portal earlier in the day.

While the linebacker room may have a lot of talent, they are lacking depth. Linebacker may be the position with the least amount of depth for the 2023 team. [autotag]Harold Perkins[/autotag] is an anomaly, but he needs rest every now and then.

[autotag]Whit Weeks[/autotag] has a shot at coming in and starting on Day 1. [autotag]Micah Baskerville[/autotag] is headed to the NFL. Oghoufo will have a chance to come in and make a big difference for the Tigers next fall. Kelly will be looking to add more talent from the transfer portal.

Texas transfer Ovie Oghoufo lands at LSU

Brian Kelly might have a clearer vision for his former Notre Dame player Ovie Oghoufo.

Ovie Oghoufo is on his way to Baton Rouge after two years in Austin. He left his mark as a student athlete on the Forty Acres, earning Academic All-American honors and pressuring opposing quarterbacks.

Oghoufo, though talented and athletic, wasn’t the perfect fit at Texas. His struggles revolved mostly around setting the edge in run support. The natural pass rusher could find a more passing down specific role at LSU.

The move is mutually beneficial for Texas and Oghoufo. The Longhorns could find a more natural fit for Pete Kwiatkowski’s defense with Tausili Akana and better edge setting and playmaking from Justice Finkley, Ethan Burke, Colton Vasek and others.

Oghoufo finds a new home with a strong foundation of defensive talent to thrive in his role. He reunites with his former head coach Brian Kelly, both of which were part of Notre Dame’s last trip to the College Football Playoff.

Impressions from the season kickoff between Texas and ULM

Looking at where the Longhorns can improve after a strong opening win.

In front of an emotionally charged crowd, Texas defeated the ULM Warhawks, 52-10. The game had multiple positives to build on as the season progresses.

The pass rush is perhaps the biggest positive takeaway from Saturday’s game. Barryn Sorrell proved capable and disruptive on the night and could be in store for a big year.

Justice Finkley and Jaylon Guilbeau played like starters. In my estimation, Texas appears to be a more imposing and deeper defense than in years past, but certainly looked more technically sound.

Excellent pursuit from the defense became a consistent theme on the night. The Texas defense consistently swarmed to the football. Multiple defenders surrounded ball carriers on outside runs, making life difficult on ULM running backs.

Albeit, the game did unearth a couple of deficiencies on both sides of the football.

On the defensive side, edges allowed outside runs failing to set the edge.

On offense, Quinn Ewers made some great plays but the deep ball did not connect. Nevertheless, after an early interception Ewers settled in and played well overall.

The team is a work in progress, but the defense appears to be improved from last season. We will see if that trend continues after this week.

Experienced defenders face a prove it year for Texas in 2022

Veteran defenders will be asked to prove themselves this season.

The Texas Longhorns will be asked to prove themselves on the field this season. That reality is as true for veteran defenders as it is for any other Texas player.

The pressure is off new potential starters, such as Byron Murphy, Barryn Sorrell, Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey, Jaylan Ford and Ryan Watts. Presumably, they simply had to prove they were worthy of significant playing time. Other players have much more to prove heading into the 2022 season.

D’Shawn Jamison perhaps sits at the top of that list. Jamison has flashed star quality at cornerback and as a returner, but perhaps has yet to reach his full potential. The veteran cornerback has been an interception machine in fall practices, which should come as no surprise.

Similarly, DeMarvion Overshown and Keondre Coburn have been praised for their efforts this offseason. Both highly talented prospects have a lot to gain from a great season this year.

Ovie Oghoufo takes a different path but has similar circumstances, as he will need a strong season to improve his standing with NFL scouts.

The high volume of players in need of a bounce back season could spark the defense to a strong performance this year.

Several Texas football players speak at Big 12 Media Days

The Texas players talked about leadership, team dynamics and scheme at Big 12 Media Days. Here’s some of the best quotes:

Bijan Robinson, Roschon Johnson, DeMarvion Overshown, and Ovie Oghoufo spoke to Big 12 media in Arlington Thursday afternoon. The four were selected to represent the team as Steve Sarkisian begins his second season at Texas.

Among the important topics that emerged, team leadership and unity appeared to be a common theme for Steve Sarkisian and his players. Sarkisian had high praise for backup running back Roschon Johnson.

Much has been made of Johnson’s emerging role as the vocal leader. That sentiment was echoed by his head coach, who called Johnson an, “alpha,” who demanded the very best from his teammates.

The players also touched on the different personalities within the program, the new schematic additions, and the roles each player will fill.

Here’s a glimpse at what each player had to say to the media.

WATCH: Texas LB Ovie Oghoufo announces his return next season

Another defensive player announces his return for next season. The buy-in from players under Sark is notable!

Texas has been receiving a ton of great news as of late whether it be landing five-star offensive lineman Kelvin Banks or there-star Cam Williams.

The positives keep on coming for a program that badly needs all the talent and good news possible, as linebacker Ovie Oghoufo took to Twitter to announce that he will be coming back for his senior season.

Oghoufo marks another key contributor on defense that will return as DeMarvion Overshown, Keondre Coburn, and D’Shawn Jamison all announced that they will be returning for next season.

Oghoufo, who came to Texas by way of the transfer portal from Notre Dame, was a key player on the defense that played in all 12 games. He registered 42 total tackles, and was tied for the second-most sacks on the team with two.

Texas is likely hoping that with another year in the system, Oghoufo will be able to use that to his advantage and flourish next season, as they look to make up for going 5-7.

Red River Showdown: Going Behind Enemy Lines with Longhorns Wire

As the Sooners and the Longhorns prepare to face off in the Red River Rivalry, we’re going Behind Enemy Lines with Longhorns Wire.

The Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns will meet for the 117th time this Saturday in a game that will be a hotly contested matchup between two of the better teams in the Big 12.

While the Oklahoma Sooners may come in as the “favorite” in this matchup, what we’ve witnessed over the last decade is that it doesn’t really matter who the favorite is. The rivalry provides high drama and games that go down to the wire more often than not.

For both sides, this game carries a ton of weight as the Oklahoma Sooners look to prove they belong among the top four teams in the country. For the Texas Longhorns, they’re trying to work their way back up the rankings after a disappointing loss to Arkansas a few weeks back.

As if they didn’t have enough to play for, pride is on the line in one of the most storied rivalries in all of sports. We’re excited to help you get ready for this year’s playing of the Red River Showdown with Longhorns Wire’s Griffin McVeigh as he takes us through the ins and outs of the Texas Longhorns ahead of Saturday’s matchup.

Texas Football: Studs and Duds from the Week 1 win over Louisiana

Who were the studs and duds of Texas’ opener?

The Longhorns started the 2021 season off the way every team wants to, in the win column.

Steve Sarkisian silenced the doubters in the 38-18 win, although many expecte a new staff along with new players all over the field, Texas would struggle mightily against the No. 23 ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns.

That was not the case at all, as the Longhorns only trailed for the blink of an eye after an early Louisiana field goal at the beginning of the first quarter, but Texas was able to take control and make a huge statement by picking up a win against a ranked team that finished 10-1 the season prior.

There were many positives for Texas, who were able to get the Sarkisian era off to a 1-0 start, something that former head coach Tom Herman could not do.

In each game, there are always people who play really well and stand out from the others, but unfortunately there is always some that do not play to the best of their ability.

Let’s take a look at three players who were “duds,” those who did not perform as well as expected, and three “studs,” players who performed well and contributed significantly to the win.

Since we’re only doing there, there are a couple of studs that aren’t included, but should be listed as honorable mentions. Those being DeMarvion Overshowm, Luke Brockermeyer, and of course the play calling of Steve Sarkisian.
