PFF regrades 2019 NFL draft: Giants take another tumble

Pro Football Focus has regraded the 2019 NFL draft and for the New York Giants, things look worse now than they did then.

In looking back on the New York Giants’ 2019 draft class, it has — like many other team’s drafts — changed in perspective as time has passed.

The main thing to remember is that they made three picks in the first round, which were all questionable at the time, and two of the three could end in disaster if quarterback Daniel Jones doesn’t pan out.

Michael Renner of Pro Football Focus revisits the Giants’ 2019 draft, which began as above average and has taken a slight dip over the past two years.

NEW YORK GIANTS

Round 1 (6): QB Daniel Jones, Duke
Round 1 (17): DI Dexter Lawrence, Clemson
Round 1 (30): CB Deandre Baker, Georgia
Round 3 (95): EDGE Oshane Ximines, Old Dominion
Round 4 (108): CB Julian Love, Notre Dame
Round 5 (143): LB Ryan Connelly, Wisconsin
Round 5 (171): WR Darius Slayton, Auburn
Round 6 (180); CB Corey Ballentine, Washburn
Round 7 (232): OT George Asafo-Adjei, Kentucky
Round 7 (245): DI Chris Slayton, Syracuse

Then: Above Average
Now: Average

As bad as Deandre Baker looked as a rookie, it’s difficult to ding the Giants too much for the pick; off-field issues ended his time with the franchise. The relative merits of the Daniel Jones pick still looms large over the organization, but they got three other solid players in this draft in defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, defensive back Julian Love and wide receiver Darius Slayton.

To be clear, the Baker thing was more than a mess because they traded three picks to get back into the first round and have nothing to show for their efforts. This class naturally relies on the success of Jones. If he becomes a franchise quarterback, no one will care about Baker.

The positives to take away are exactly what Renner pointed out — Lawrence, Love and Slayton are all viable pieces. Ximines has a chance to still salvage his status but must stay healthy, something he has failed to do. Connelly looked like a gem but blew out his knee and the team gave up on him. Ballentine, Asafo-Adjei and Chris Slayton are no longer with the team.

Giants injury report: Sterling Shepard limited

The New York Giants were back at practice on Wednesday with CB James Bradberry out and WR Sterling Shepard limited.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday for the first time as a full team since prior to their November 15 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

The good news? Rookie safety Xavier McKinney (foot), linebacker Oshane Ximines (shoulder) and guard Kevin Zeitler (shoulder) were all participating on at least a limited basis.+

The bad news? Cornerback James Bradberry was not.

But don’t get too panicked. The Giants revealed that Bradberry had been excused for a family-related matter and that he would be back on the practice field on Friday.

Finally, players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list obviously did not participate on Wednesday. Neither they nor anyone on IR were given a daily injury designation.

The official injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: CB James Bradberry (not injurt-related)

Limited participant: WR Sterling Shepard (hip/toe)

Full participant: OL Kevin Zeitler (concussion)

Giants designate Xavier McKinney, Oshane Ximines to return from IR

The New York Giants have designated rookie S Xavier McKinney and EDGE Oshane Ximines to return from IR plus other roster moves.

When the New York Giants return to practice in East Rutherford, New Jersey later this week, they will be joined by two familiar faces.

The team announced on Monday that rookie safety Xavier McKinney (foot) and edge rusher Oshane Ximines (shoulder) have been designated to return from injured reserve.

McKinney suffered a fractured foot in training camp and the injury required surgery. He’s been on IR since August. Ximines, meanwhile, suffered a shoulder injury in early October and has been on the mend for nearly two months.

Although McKinney and Ximines has been designated to return, it does not necessarily mean they will play in Week 12 against the Cincinnati Bengals. However, this does start their 21-day activation window.

In addition to McKinney and Ximines being designated to return, the Giants also announced that punter Riley Dixon and long snapper Casey Kreiter have been activated off the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Both Dixon and Kreiter were placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list after kicker Graham Gano tested positive for the virus last week.

Gano and three others — tight end Kaden Smith, rookie tackle Matt Peart and wide receiver/return specialist Dante Pettis — remain on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Giants’ Xavier McKinney inching closer to return

New York Giants rookie safety Xavier McKinney is inching closer to his return, as are linebacker Oshane Ximines and Tae Crowder.

[jwplayer bkhB5hxO-ThvAeFxT]

When New York Giants rookie safety Xavier McKinney went down with a fractured foot in training camp, the initial timeline that had been discussed postulated the second-round pick would return in mid-November.

That timeline has proven to be relatively accurate as McKinney has been seen working with trainers on the side during practice, doing some running and other resistance work.

Although McKinney is eligible to be designated to return from injured reserve, the Giants may wait an additional week or two before making that decision.

“That’s still up in the air,” head coach Joe Judge said of McKinney returning this week. “I don’t know if we will necessarily see him this week. He was on the field the other day running with the trainers. I haven’t had much of a chance with my own eyes to really get my eyes on him. I know he’s making a lot of progress. I’m getting positive reports on him. We have until Wednesday. He’ll be with the trainers tomorrow, that may shed a little bit more light on it for us. Based on how we practice Wednesday, if we go full tilt or some kind of an abbreviated walk thru, or short fundamentals practice, we haven’t decided yet. That may affect whether or not we start his clock on that day or not.”

The same line of thinking applies to linebackers Oshane Ximines and Tae Crowder.

“With Oshane and Tae, they are very similar to X-man. We have to figure out where they’re at physically and when do we want to start their clock. All of them have made a lot of progress. Some are a little bit closer than others. I want to see where they’re at,” Judge said. “The biggest thing I’d say at this point is because you have the bye week coming up next week, we want to be very calculated when we start their clock, that 21-day window. If you start it too early and then you lose another week with the bye week anyway, it may set them back.

“There’s a benefit of getting them going with us right away, getting their legs back under them, get them back playing football. There’s also a benefit of holding a little bit knowing you have the bye week next week and there’s really no advantage to getting them to a game next week anyway. There’s a couple different avenues we can take with these guys. I want to see where they’re at physically. We talked this morning with the trainers and basically said, ‘hey look, tomorrow we have to have some answers to at least help us make a better decision.’ ”

With the additional bye week looming, the Giants do not seem rushed about getting any of the three back. And while they could potentially return to the field on Wednesday, it’s far more likely Judge holds them out until the team returns from their bye on or around November 25.

Giants’ Oshane Ximines will not practice this week

New York Giants head coach Joe Judge says LB Oshane Ximines will not practice this week and may not return prior to the bye week.

[jwplayer DAaKdsxo-ThvAeFxT]

New York Giants outside linebacker Oshane Ximines is eligible to be activated from injured reserve this week after being shut down with a shoulder injury early in October.

Ximines last played against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 4, but it seems the Giants will have to wait a little longer to get him back in the lineup.

“He’s making a lot of progress. We’re hoping to see him sooner than later. It won’t be this week for him right now,” head coach Joe Judge said on Wednesday. “He’s making a lot of gains. I think the biggest balance with those guys is balancing with the trainers at what point can we put him out there and know he can properly defend himself and execute aggressively. He’s been working with the trainers very hard. He’s been getting some work in the weight room done and those have been positives. We’ve got Washington and Philly and a bye week coming up. Somewhere in that window hopefully we get him back.”

The Giants will take on the Washington Football Team this Sunday, whom New York defeated for their lone win of the season in Week 6. After that, the Giants will take on the division rival Philadelphia Eagles before heading to their bye week.

With the indication that Ximines may not return prior to the bye week, the Week 12 game against the Cincinnati Bengals seems to be the realistic target for the linebacker’s return.

Surprisingly enough, the Giants’ defense and, in particular, their pass rush has played well all season long despite the injuries to Ximines and Lorenzo Carter and the departure of 2019 sack leader Markus Golden, who was traded to the Arizona Cardinals a few weeks ago.

Ximines was selected in the third  round of the 2019 NFL draft with one of the picks the Giants acquired in the Odell Beckham Jr. trade. As the Giants continue to build their roster, they hope that Ximines continues to grow in their system.

Giants’ Kyler Fackrell prepared to carry the load at linebacker

New York Giants LB Kyler Fackrell says he is prepared to carry the load after the team lost several linebackers to injury.

[jwplayer mBxpxGO4-ThvAeFxT]

The New York Giants came into the 2020 regular season somewhat thin at linebacker and things have only gotten worse since then.

David Mayo (knee) and Oshane Ximines (shoulder) remain on injured reserve, and Lorenzo Carter has been lost for the season after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon in Week 5.

That leaves the Giants in a somewhat precarious position, which is something Kyler Fackrell, who was signed as a free agent earlier this year, openly admits.

“I feel for Zo. We’ve had him in our thoughts and prayers,” Fackrell told reporters on Wednesday. “It’s rough, we’re a little thin at outside backer right now. Maybe just a little bit, I think I ended up playing every snap on Sunday.”

Playing every snap in the NFL is a tall order, but Fackrell is prepared to shoulder that burden over the next several weeks if it’s what the Giants ultimately need. And they may.

“I think that will be the plan moving forward, at least that’s what I’m preparing for. I don’t mind it. I would prefer to be on the field,” he said.

In the interim, the Giants may also boost the roles of rookie linebacker Cam Brown and Carter Coughlin, as well as Tae Crowder, who plays more on the inside.

It’s not an ideal scenario for late-round rookies to see a lot of field time, but circumstances dictate that need. And Fackrell feels confident that if called upon, they can hold their own.

“[Coughling and Brown] done a great job, even through training camp and everything. I feel for the rookies this year with how everything has been with COVID-19 and not getting any offseason. I feel like they have come in at a big disadvantage,” Fackrell said. “They’ve both done a great job. I think both of them have started to blossom here, just getting comfortable with the speed of the game and everything. I think definitely we can rely on them to step in when we need them to on defense.

“[Crowder] a really talented guy, I think he has a great nose for the ball. His confidence has been building. It started with special teams, but they’ve kind of chosen to give him that bigger role. I think he has stepped into it really well.”

Even with the rookies likely seeing increased roles, the burden ultimately falls on the shoulders of Fackrell and veteran Markus Golden, both of whom are ready to step up and do what’s needed.

Giants place Oshane Ximines on injured reserve

The New York Giants have placed second-year linebacker Oshane Ximines on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

The New York Giants placed outside linebacker Oshane Ximines on injured reserve with a shoulder injury on Friday.

While Ximines was initially ruled out this week against the Dallas Cowboys, the Giants ultimately made the decision to move him to IR, which means he will be on the shelf for at least the next three weeks.

While Ximines had only five tackles with no sacks in his sophomore campaign, he recorded five pressures and four quarterback hits in a little over three games.

Ximines saw just 19 snaps against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday before exiting with the shoulder issue.

In his second season as a pro, Ximines has seen less playing time than anticipated despite making three starts.

With Ximines out, this should open up the door for veteran edge rusher Markus Golden, whose role has been heavily reduced despite putting up 10 sacks a season ago.

The Giants also saw linebacker David Mayo (knee), who is on injured reserve, return to practice on Friday. He could be a potential option to replace Ximines on the 53-man roster.

Giants injury report: Oshane Ximines out, Jabrill Peppers questionable

New York Giants LB Oshane Ximines is out against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5, while safety Jabrill Peppers is questionable.

The New York Giants will be short at least one defender in Week 5 against the Dallas Cowboys, announcing on Friday that linebacker Oshane Ximines (shoulder) will sit this one out.

Meanwhile, safety Jabrill Peppers (ankle) finished the week with three consecutive limited practices and is questionable to play on Sunday.

“He’s going to go through practice again with us today,” head coach Joe Judge told reporters. “We’ll see where he is kind of through the weekend in terms of what he does on Sunday. He got some work yesterday. He was a little bit limited in some things. Look, Jabrill is a competitor. We’ll see how he does today.

“To me, it’s always more of a question in terms of not necessarily the reps, it’s more of a question of if we put a guy on the field, can he get hurt worse? To me, it’s a difference in tolerating pain, and that’s a player’s decision, and can he get hurt worse. If he can injure something worse or any player can, that to me is when we have to step in as coaches and trainers and make a decision for him.”

In addition to Peppers, defensive back Adrian Colbert (neck) and linebacker Kyler Fackrell (neck) are also listed as questionable. Both players were limited participants on Friday.

Finally, the Giants offered no official work on linebacker David Mayo (knee), who returned to practice on Thursday and has 21 days (now 20) to be activated.

Giants injury report: Jabrill Peppers continues to practice

New York Giants safety Jabrill Peppers (ankle) was practicing again on Thursday and head coach Joe Judge says he could play in Week 5.

The New York Giants were back on the field on Thursday for their first full practice of the week, and safety Jabrill Peppers (ankle) was among those participating.

Fellow safety Adrian Colbert (neck) was also participating in the portion of practice open to the media, while the Giants welcomed back linebacker David Mayo (knee), who remains on injured reserve and has 21 days to be activated.

On the downside of things, linebacker Kyler Fackrell (neck) was wearing a yellow non-contact jersey, while Oshane Ximines (shoulder) was not present at all.

Despite Fackrell’s yellow jersey and Ximines’ absence, head coach Joe Judge said all players on the injury report could be active this Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.

“You know what, at this point right here, I’d say yeah, everyone is a possibility,” Judge told reporters.

Here’s the full official report from the Giants:

Did not participate: LB Oshane Ximines (shoulder)

Limited participation: Jabrill Peppers (ankle), DB Adrian Colbert (neck) and LB Kyler Fackrell (neck)

Full participation: N/A

Giants injury report: Jabrill Peppers returns to practice

New York Giants safety Jabrill Peppers (ankle) returned to practice on Wednesday as the team begins preparations for the Dallas Cowboys.

The New York Giants returned to practice on Wednesday ahead of a Week 5 game against the Dallas Cowboys and all eyes were on safety Jabrill Peppers.

Peppers missed a Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams as a result of a low ankle sprain suffered a week earlier, but was on the field during the team’s first practice (see: walkthrough) of the week.

That is good news for the Giants, who are dealing with injury issues at the position. Rookie safety Xavier McKinney remains on injured reserve with a foot injury, while Julian Love (knee/ankle) and Adrian Colbert (neck) continue dealing with injuries of their own.

Meanwhile, linebackers Oshane Ximines (shoulder) and Kyler Fackrell (neck) were added to the injury report.

Here’s the full official report from the Giants:

Did not participate: LB Oshane Ximines (shoulder)

Limited participation: Jabrill Peppers (ankle), DB Adrian Colbert (neck) and LB Kyler Fackrell (neck)
