Magic at Nets: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Nets 119, Magic 100

Money line (ML)

The Nets are huge money line favorites in this contest and it’s not hard to see why. They are the far superior team and they are also healthier. The Magic are missing several key pieces and have lost four straight games, all by double-digits.

There isn’t much value in betting the Nets as -400 favorites. Instead, PASS on the money line in favor of the point spread.

Against the spread (ATS)

The NETS -9.5 (+100) are less than double-digit favorites in this game and that feels far too low. The Magic have lost their last four games by a combined 105 points. They failed to cover the spread in each of their last four games and they are playing awful basketball.

Meanwhile, the Nets appear to be rejuvenated after the Harden trade and he could appear in this game. For all of those reasons, take Brooklyn to win by at least 10 points.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the UNDER 225.5 (-110) with just enough healthy bodies available for the Magic. The Nets will carry the bulk of the scoring but are likely to rest most key starters late in the game.

Orlando Magic at Houston Rockets odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Orlando Magic at Houston Rockets NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Orlando Magic (6-2) visit the Houston Rockets (2-4) Friday at Toyota Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Magic-Rockets NBA betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Orlando has won back-to-back games entering Friday’s contest. Both were played in Cleveland against the Cavaliers with the first coming by a 20-point margin (103-83 Jan. 4) and the latter decided by 11 points (105-94 Jan. 6). The Magic suffered a big loss in the latest victory over the Cavs with starting PG Markelle Fultz suffering a season-ending torn ACL.

The Rockets have lost back-to-back games albeit to quality teams in the Dallas Mavericks (113-100 Jan. 4) and the Pacers (114-107 Jan. 6). Houston failed to cover the spread in both games. The Rockets’ issue seems to be a lack of offensive continuity as they have three players averaging over 23 points per game (G James Harden, PG John Wall and C Christian Wood) and SG Eric Gordon bringing in another 19.5 points per off the bench. Still, they rank only 18th in offensive rating and have the fewest assists per game in the NBA.

These teams split the two-game season series last year and both games were blowouts: Houston (-6.5) won 130-107 at Orlando in Dec. 2019, and the Magic (+7.5) won at Houston in March 2020.

Magic at Rockets: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 10:20 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Magic +190 (bet $100 to win $190) | Rockets -240 (bet $240 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Magic +6.5 (-120) | Rockets -6.5 (+100)
  • Over/Under: 225.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Magic at Rockets: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Rockets 118, Magic 104

Money line (ML)

PASS ON THE MONEY LINE. Houston is the right side but no way would I recommend betting the Rockets (-240) to win straight up. The juice is too high for a team as out of sync as the Rockets.

Against the spread (ATS)

As much as I hate laying this many points, I have to take the Rockets given the Magic’s injury situation. Not only is rookie PG Cole Anthony replacing Fultz but the other backup PG in Carter-Williams is out and Fournier is dealing with a back issue.

Houston’s three-headed monster in the backcourt—Harden, Wall and Gordon—have to be able to feast in this matchup. If the Rockets don’t win and cover vs. the Magic it’s time to pump the breaks on betting them until further notice. Houston is just not clicking well enough offensively to bet this game heavy but I can put 1 unit on ROCKETS -6.5 (+100).

Over/Under (O/U)

BET UNDER 225.5 (-110) since the market is hammering the Under. According to Pregame.com, this total opened at 230.5 but more than 80% of the money is on the Under so the total has been dragged down. We are getting to the party a little late so I’d probably put less on my total bet compared to the spread.

Cavaliers at Magic: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Magic 105, Cavaliers 92

Money line (ML)

The Magic (-250) will cost you nearly two and a half times your potential return, and that’s not the way to go. Yes, Orlando won the front end of the doubleheader by a 103-83 count on Monday. But teams have been having a hard time duplicating the same results in the second go-around. AVOID, and look to the spread instead.

Against the spread (ATS)

The MAGIC -6.5 (+100) routed the Cavaliers +6.5 (-120) in the first game of the double-dip. However, Orlando has some backcourt injury issues with MCW, hurting his foot in the first half on Monday’s game, and Fournier a big question mark to return after missing the past two due to back spasms.

If Fournier is unable to gut it out, Terrence Ross is forced into the starting five and confidence is not as high that Orlando will be able to pick up another cover. Watch closely, and if Fournier is sidelined, scale back your wager.

Over/Under (O/U)

The play is UNDER 213.5 (-105), which has cashed in each of the past three for Orlando, including Monday’s game with 186 points against a total of 214. The Under has also connected in three consecutive games for the Magic. The Under is also 8-1 in the past nine in this series, including each of the past five meetings in O-Town.

Cavaliers at Magic: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Magic 107, Cavaliers 99

Money line (ML)

The MAGIC (-200) are actually right at my personal limit for money line bets. With Fournier knicked up a bit, and the Magic coming in on a two-game losing skid at home, I am more comfortable playing Orlando on the money line rather than laying the points here.

The Cavaliers picked up a 96-91 win at the Atlanta Hawks Saturday, but they’re just 1-2 straight up and ATS across their past three after starting out 3-0 SU/ATS. Injuries make Cleveland a very tough team to back right now.

Against the spread (ATS)

The MAGIC -5.5 (+100) are the lean here, although I prefer them on the money line. Orlando has struggled to put points on the board in its past two games, averaging 95.5 points per game in a pair of home losses, which is well below its overall season average of 112.0 PPG.

The Magic are 7-3 ATS in the past 10 meetings against the Cavaliers, but the Cavs are 10-4 ATS in their past 14 trips to O-Town.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 217.5 (-110) is the best course of action here, as the Magic have been under the century mark in each of their past two games, while the Cavs have scored 99 or fewer points in three straight games. They are missing the veteran presence of Love in the middle.

The Under has cashed in seven of the past eight meetings in this series, and four straight in Orlando, too.

Thunder at Magic: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Magic 114, Thunder 100

Money line (ML)

The Magic (-350) pounded the Thunder by a 118-107 score in OKC Dec. 29 before the calendar flipped to 2021. The year number might have changed, but these teams are basically the same from last week.

Don’t expect OKC to return the favor in O-Town. Still, Orlando is a bit pricey. AVOID.

Against the spread (ATS)

MAGIC -7.5 (-110) is the play on their home court. They topped the Thunder at Chesapeake Arena last week by 11 points, covering a 6.5-point number. No reason to believe Orlando won’t cover again.

They’re 4-1 ATS in their five outings so far, although they were dusted last time out on their home floor against Philadelphia.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 218.5 (-110) is worth a small-unit play. By NBA standards today, these teams don’t light up the scoreboard, especially the visitors. OKC is averaging just 101.3 PPG, which is 29th in the league during the early going. Both are just middling teams defensively, too.

76ers at Magic: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Magic 113, 76ers 108

Money line (ML)

Philadelphia recovered from an odd 24-point whooping administered by the Cleveland Cavaliers Dec. 27 to beat the 2019-20 Atlantic Division champion Toronto Raptors at home 100-93 Tuesday. All-Star Joel Embiid was, and has been, dominant against the Raptors: Embiid scored 29 points (14 of which at the free-throw line), 16 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks.

The Magic is not only undefeated but also 4-0 ATS, including a 118-107 victory at the Oklahoma City Thunder on Dec. 29. Orlando’s own former All-Star big man, C Nikola Vucevic, also had a monster game vs. the Thunder: Vucevic put up 28 points on 12 of 18 shooting with 10 rebounds and 5 assists.

The 76ers beat the Magic 108-101 in their final meeting last regular season Aug. 7 in the Orlando bubble, but the Magic won and covered the previous three head-to-heads.

There are just more reasons to like the Magic in this spot. First, money is flooding in on Philadelphia as 87% of the cash bet is on the 76ers, according to Pregame.com, so we have the fade the market angle with Orlando.

Second, the Magic have a more established identity with a head coach, Steve Clifford, who’s in his third season on the job and a roster with years of continuity. Orlando has made the playoffs in Clifford’s first two seasons.

Third, Philadelphia is too careless with the ball, and Orlando is great at creating turnovers: The 76ers are 26th in turnover percentage and the Magic’s defense averages the eighth-most turnovers in the NBA.

At the moment, I lean MAGIC (+125) for a quarter-unit with a plan to bet more on Orlando plus the points, but I’d wait around to see what happens with this number because it looks like we’ll get a better price with the Magic around tip-off.

Against the spread (ATS)

If I lean Orlando on the money line then I like MAGIC +3.5 (-115) for 2 units. We like the spread here because the market is in on the 76ers.

Over/Under (O/U)

Five of the previous 76ers-Magic games have gone Under the total. However, Orlando’s offense has looked good to start off the year—fifth in points per game and offensive rating—and they are playing at the fifth-fastest pace in the NBA.

Part of my money line handicap mentions Philadelphia’s turnover issues, and if that becomes a factor in Thursday’s game, the Magic will capitalize on those errors. I’d TAKE OVER 219.5 (-115) for 1 unit.

Magic at Thunder: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Magic 111, Thunder 102

Money line (ML)

PASS. The Magic (-200) are the right side in this one (more on that in a second), but I am not laying double my potential return for an outright win in any NBA regular-season game.

Against the spread (ATS)

Raise your hand if you said that the Indiana Pacers, Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers and Orlando Magic would be the remaining undefeated Eastern Conference teams after three games. No one, right?

The Magic are 3-0 after a surprising 113-107 victory against Southeastern Division rivals Miami Heat on opening night and winning back-to-back games over another divisional foe in the Washington Wizards this past weekend.

Oklahoma City was on the good side of a single-possession game with a 109-107 win at the Charlotte Hornets Saturday but lost at the Utah Jazz 110-109 Monday in a game they were leading by double-digits at one point.

The Thunder probably had the most roster turnover this offseason as three of their leading scores from last season’s team (Dennis Schroder, Chris Paul and Danilo Gallinari) and Steven Adams are no longer with the team. That puts a lot on the young shoulders of PG Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and SF Luguentz Dort.

As far as Magic-Thunder is concerned, OKC’s trade of Adams to the New Orleans Pelicans is the biggest factor. The Thunder did bring in veteran big C Al Horford, but his prime is behind him at this point. The only previous All-Star on Orlando’s roster is C Nikola Vučević. While he’s only fourth on the team in points per game, head coach Steve Clifford has no problem featuring Vucevic in the offense if he’s got a glaring mismatch.

Furthermore, the Magic have made the playoffs in back-to-back years and Vučević led the team in both points per game and win shares in both seasons. Expect Orlando to get a bunch of points in the paint and bet MAGIC -4.5 (-120) for 1 unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

Since the Magic have been a slower-paced, defensive-oriented team for several seasons now, I’ll “lean” UNDER 218.5 (-110) for a quarter-unit. The total has already been bet down from the 219.5-opening line, but the logic is overly simple for me not to like this play. It’s a low total and we are seeing the maturation of PG Markelle Fultz and 62-plus percent effective field-goal percentage from both G’s Terrence Ross and Evan Fournier.

Magic at Wizards: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Magic 125, Wizards 119

Money line (ML)

The MAGIC (-105) won 130-120 on Saturday night in D.C. against the Wizards (-115), and now they look to run it back and sweep the doubleheader. The NBA schedule maker got creative in these COVID times, scheduling some of these double dips to limit travel and spread, etc. Orlando was 10 points better than Washington less than 24 hours ago, it’s unlikely much changes in the second end.

Against the spread (ATS)

The MAGIC +1.5 (-115) are catching nearly a bucket from the winless Wizards -1.5 (-105) despite a 10-point win Saturday. Orlando moved to 11-3-1 ATS across the previous 15 road games, while posting a 23-7 ATS mark in the past 30 against losing sides. Conversely, Washington is 2-7 ATS in the previous nine following a straight-up loss. Keep fading the Wiz until they can turn things around.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 227.5 (-110) comfortably connected in Saturday’s game, so why not Sunday? Washington has allowed 121.5 PPG through two losses so far, while Orlando has rolled up 121.5 PPG on offense in its two wins. Look for another high-scoring affair despite a back-to-back for both teams.

Magic at Wizards: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Magic 121, Wizards 114

Money line (ML)

The MAGIC (+110) picked up a solid 113-107 victory over the visiting Miami Heat in a Sunshine State battle in the opener. C Nikola Vucevic was a handful for Miami, going for 15 points, 11 rebounds and a blocked shot, and he’ll be a handful for the Wizards in the middle, too. The Wizards (-130) were on the short end of a 113-107 decision against the 76ers. They actually led 83-73 heading into the final quarter but frittered away the 10-point lead in rather short order.

Against the spread (ATS)

The MAGIC +1.5 (-105) are an impressive 10-3-1 ATS across the past 14 road games dating back to last season, and they’re also a solid 22-7 ATS in the past 29 against losing teams. The Wizards -1.5 (-115) closed out last season with an 0-3-1 ATS mark following a cover, and they were 2-6 ATS in the past eight following a straight-up loss. Until they prove they can turn those trends around, keep fading the Wiz in these situations.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 229.5 (-110) is a tad on the high side, but it’s the way to go here. The Magic hit the Over in their opener, and the Over is now 21-5 across their past 26 games dating back to last season. The Over is also 11-4 in their past 15 as an underdog, while cashing in seven of the past eight meetings against the Wizards in D.C.
