Former Wisconsin DL signs with the Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles just signed a former Badger:

Former Wisconsin defensive lineman Olive Sagapolu signed with the Philadelphia Eagles earlier today. They are his fourth NFL team in five seasons, after spending 2015-2018 in Madison, Wisconsin.

The defensive lineman played 28 total games for the Badgers, totaling 61 tackles, 10 tackles-for-loss, six sacks and one interception. He then went undrafted during the 2019 NFL Draft, signed with the Packers that July before being released by the team before the season, spent two years on the Lions practice squad and finally spent the summer of 2021 with the Atlanta Falcons. His final stop before signing with the Eagles today was with the Pittsburgh Maulers of the USFL where he made a game-winning play in overtime.

The former Badger joins a loaded Eagles defensive line room with the likes of Fletcher Cox, Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis and Milton Williams. He will now battle with other depth pieces for a spot on the 53-man roster.

Philadelphia #Eagles sign defensive tackle Olive Sagapolu

Howie Roseman is always looking to add talent to the Eagles roster, and ahead of joint practice sessions with the Browns, the Birds signed defensive tackle Olive Sagapolu.

Signed by the Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2019, Olive has spent time with the Lions and Falcons, and this spring, started at defensive tackle for the USFL’s Pittsburgh Maulers.

WATCH: Former Wisconsin DL Olive Sagapolu makes game-winning play in OT

Former Wisconsin DL sealed the game with an impressive pass breakup:

The 2023 USFL Championship will be full of former Wisconsin Badgers after the Pittsburgh Maulers defeated the Michigan Panthers this weekend.

The Maulers possess six former Badgers: guard Jon Dietzen, fullback Mason Stokke, defensive end Izayah Green-May, running back Garrett Groshek and defensive lineman Olive Sagapolu. If you need a rooting interest in the title game next weekend, the Birmingham Stallions have zero.

The final two listed above had significant roles in the Maulers’ overtime win to send the team to the championship game. Groshek tallied over 70 scrimmage yards and scored a touchdown, while Sagapolu ended the game with a terrific pass breakup.

Sagapolu has tallied 22 tackles and four sacks this season. His pirouette, back-handed pass deflection to close out the North Division Championship is likely the highlight of his season.

Sagapolu and the other five former Wisconsin standouts will be in action July 1 at 7 p.m. Central in the 2023 USFL championship game.

Saints bring in 4 free agent linemen for tryouts

Saints bring in four free agent linemen for tryouts, including training camp right tackle Kyle Murphy

The New Orleans Saints auditioned four free agents for tryouts on Monday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire, all of them linemen — two on offense and two on defense. It makes sense to restock the trenches given the injuries and losses New Orleans has sustained, having recently lost backup defensive tackle Josiah Bronson on waivers with starting offensive tackles Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramczyk missing multiple weeks with injuries.

While none of them have been signed just yet, here’s what you need to know about the four tryout players:

The Houston Texans released former Wisconsin Badger defensive lineman Olive Sagapolu earlier today, the move made as they work to cut their roster to 80 before today’s deadline.

The former Badger signed with the Falcons back in May after spending the last two seasons on the Detroit Lions practice squad.

Sagapolu is the fifth Wisconsin product to be released since the start of NFL training camp, joining offensive lineman Jon Dietzen, tight end Troy Fumagalli, offensive lineman Tyler Marz and cornerback Nick Nelson.

The 3-4 nose tackle had spent most of his two-year career in Detroit before today, playing several years on their practice squad and as a reserve but never seeing the field.

He will now get a shot to make the roster in Atlanta and add to the long list of Wisconsin products on NFL active rosters.

Lions place FB Nick Bawden on IR, re-sign NT Olive Sagapolu

The Detroit Lions announced that they have placed fullback Nick Bawden on injured reserve and re-signed nose tackle Olive Sagapolu.

The Detroit Lions announced that they have placed fullback Nick Bawden on injured reserve and re-signed nose tackle Olive Sagapolu.

This is the third time in three seasons Bawden has been placed on injured reserve, and the second time he landed there during training camp — the other being his rookie season. Bawden’s first two stints on injured reserve were ACL injuries, but it’s unclear at this time what injury he is dealing with.

The Lions competition at fullback appears to be over and they will now turn to converted linebacker Jason Cabinda, who made the transition earlier in training camp and has thrived. The only competition Cabinda will face will be roster construction, but he has made a strong case to make the 53-man roster.

“Sagapolu returns to the Lions after spending a portion of training camp with the team,” the Lions said in a press release. “He originally signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Wisconsin following the 2019 NFL Draft before joining Detroit’s practice squad late last season.”

Lions sign DT Kevin Wilkins, waive Olive Sagapolu

Wilkins was with the Eagles under Cory Undlin in 2019

The Detroit Lions added a new defensive tackle to the roster just ahead of Thursday’s practice session in Allen Park. The Lions announced they have signed free agent Kevin Wilkins to a contract.

In order to make room for Wilkins, the team waived DT Olive Sagapolu.

Wilkins was most recently with the New York Giants. He spent most of the 2019 season on the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad, where he spent time working with new Lions defensive coordinator Cory Undlin. He was originally an undrafted free agent from Rutgers. The 25-year-old Wilkins has not played in an NFL game as of yet.

Establishing the 53: Rounding out the Lions’ DL

Examining the Detroit Lions defensive linemen and debating who and how many players they will keep on the 53-man roster.

It’s never too early to examine and speculate about the Detroit Lions roster. Currently, the Lions have 90-players on their roster, and come September, there will likely be some difficult decisions to make when determining their final 53-players.

Previously, in this series of articles at Lions Wire, we rounded out the running backs group, declared a winner in the fullback versus H-back competition, added an offensive weapon, narrowed down the offensive line, and in this piece, we will shift to the other side of the ball and focus on the Lions defensive line — projecting who and how many will make the 53-man roster.

Setting the table

The Lions defensive line primarily operates out of a three-man front, deploying a down defensive end (the DDE lines up on the offensive tackles outside shoulder, but will also shift inside to the 3-technique), a nose tackle (the NT splits time evenly between the 1- and 3-technique) and a defensive tackle (the DT lines up from the 3- to the 5-technique). In this set, the Lions will also line up a pass-rushing JACK linebacker opposite the DDE — for this exercise, the JACK will be discussed further in a linebacker article.

Because this is a hybrid front, the Lions will also operate with four defensive linemen, substituting a back-7 player (linebacker or defensive back) in favor of a big defensive end (BDE). The BDE will line up at the 7- or 9-technique (outside the tight end) in four-man fronts but will also rotate through at DT in three-man fronts.

For a frame of reference, last year the starters at these spots were:

  • DDE = Trey Flowers
  • NT = Damon Harrison
  • DT = A’Shawn Robinson
  • BDE = Da’Shawn Hand

Identifying starters

Despite losing two starters on the defensive line, the Lions front-four starters for 2020 are clear. Flowers will resume his role at DDE, Hand returns to his role at BDE/DT, while Harrison and Robinson were replaced in free agency by Danny Shelton at NT and Nick Williams at DT.

In three-man sets, expect Hand and Williams to rotate through the DT spot equally, regardless of who technically starts.

Erik’s take: You can write these four names in pen on your depth chart.

DDE reserve battle

After seeing over 53-percent of snaps last season, Romeo Okwara appears destined to resume the reserve DDE once again in 2020.

Jonathan Wynn runs third on the depth chart here but unless an injury happens the odds are against him. Add in the fact that JACK linebacker Austin Bryant can also flex to the DDE position and Wynn’s most optimistic outlook could be the practice squad.

Erik’s take: Okwara in, Wynn to the practice squad.

DT/BDE reserve battle

Last season the Lions kept four players at DT/BDE — Robinson (who has been replaced by Williams), Hand, Mike Daniels (who is still a free agent), and Kevin Strong. One of the reasons the Lions rolled with four players was due to Hand’s injury, but if he is healthy heading into this season, they may elect to keep only three players at this spot.

Strong returns to the roster, and as things sit right now, he appears to be the front runner for the third DT role. His primary competition will be seventh-rounder Jashon Cornell, a converted DE who shined last season at Ohio State after pushing inside to the 3-technique. Frank Herron, who was added to the Lions roster for the final month of the season, rounds out the group but he is staring at an uphill battle.

Erik’s take: Strong gets the nod in this projection, but he’ll be looking over his shoulder at Cornell who is headed to the practice squad. Herron is out.

NT reserve battle

Like at DT, this is another three-person battle between a returner, a draft pick, and a late addition to the roster.

After going undrafted in 2018, John Atkins has seen action each of the last two years, playing in 14 games and starting six down the stretch last season. His primary competition will be sixth-round pick John Penisini who has received a tremendous amount of praise for his upside in this type of NT role. Olive Sagapolu received a futures deal with the Lions last January, but like Herron, he lost his leverage once the Lions drafted a player at his position.

Erik’s take: Penisini is a perfect fit for this role and my gut feeling is he passes Atkins in the final weeks of the preseason, earning a spot on the 53. Atkins could push Strong for a deep reserve role but he’s more than likely headed to the practice squad. Sagapolu is out.

Conclusion

No real big surprises here, and while things can definitely shakeup during camp amongst the reserves, here’s where the depth chart stands in this projection:

  • DDE: Flowers, Okwara
  • NT: Shelton, Penisini
  • DT/BDE: Hand, Williams, Strong

How adding NT Danny Shelton impacts the Lions roster

Examining how agreeing to terms with nose tackle Danny Shelton impacts the Detroit Lions roster.

The 2020 official free agency period is ready to begin but the Detroit Lions have already agreed to terms with several players, including defensive tackle Danny Shelton.

Shelton, a former 12th overall pick in 2015 by the Cleveland Browns, played in New England the last two seasons where he was their starting nose tackle. He is expected to take on the same role in Detroit, replacing Damon Harrison.

With two years and 32 games worth of experience in a near-exact version of the Lions scheme, Shelton (6-2, 345) should be able to step right into the starting nose tackle role without missing a beat.

John Atkins has been the Lions top reserve at nose tackle the last two seasons and is expected to maintain that role in 2020. Olive Sagapolu is an upside nose tackle who signed a futures deal with the Lions in January but isn’t expected to do more than compete for a reserve role at this time.

[lawrence-related id=40047,40024]

Lining up at the defensive tackle spot next to Shelton will be a rotation of Da’Shawn Hand, newly acquired Nick Williams, Kevin Strong, and potentially Frank Herron. Hand, Williams, and Strong are all signed through 2021, while Herron is in a contract year.

Will the Lions add more defensive tackles?

It’s fair to say the Lions have five defensive tackles they are comfortable entering the season with — Sheldon, Hand, Williams, Atkins, and Strong — but that does not mean they are done adding at the position.

It’s possible that the Lions wait for the prices to drop in free agency and acquire another veteran to help bring stability to the younger front. Re-signing Mike Daniels is surely being considered, but if free agents like Marcell Dareus, Dontari Poe, Michael Pierce, or Shelby Harris are still around in a few days they may get a phone call from the Lions.

The draft is also another area that can’t be ruled out for adding players. Derrick Brown’s value to the Lions probably took a hit today, but nose tackles with range, like Davon Hamilton (Ohio State) and Leki Fotu (Utah), are prospects the Lions could look to draft and develop.
