UGA basketball falls to 4-7 in SEC play with loss to Ole Miss

Georgia basketball has lost six of its last seven games after a 3-1 SEC start

The Georgia Bulldogs lost 78-74 to the Ole Miss Rebels at home on Feb. 7. Georgia is now 4-7 in SEC conference play and 14-10 overall. Ole Miss moves to 2-9 in SEC play and 10-14 overall.

Head coach Mike White and the Bulldogs have dropped six of their last seven games after opening SEC play 3-1. Overall, Georgia basketball has been much more competitive this season, but it is clear that the Bulldogs need to improve if they want to be a future contender in the SEC.

Georgia limited turnovers (10) against Ole Miss. The Bulldogs did not shot three-pointers well and struggled from the free throw line to an extent.

Former Georgia guard Tye Fagan suited up for Ole Miss. Amazingly, Fagan,  who last played at Georgia during the 2020-2021 season, did not face any of his former teammates. That shows the amount of roster turnover the Dawgs have had recently.

Georgia basketball hosts Kentucky on Saturday, Feb. 11 at noon. Here’s a look at some key stats and photos from Georgia’s defeat to Ole Miss:

Twitter reacts: UGA hires head coach Mike White away from Florida

The Georgia Bulldogs basketball program is hiring former Florida Gators coach Mike White. Fans of both schools are optimistic about the move

The Georgia Bulldogs are hiring former Florida Gators coach Mike White.

Mike White has a career record of 243-127 as a head coach. He helped Louisiana Tech achieve three first-place regular finishes in conference play. White made the NCAA Tournament four times with Florida, which does not include the canceled 2020 NCAA Tournament (Florida was projected to make the field of 68 teams).

White replaces former Georgia head coach Tom Crean following Georgia’s 6-26 season. The Bulldogs went 1-17 in SEC games in 2021-2022.

Georgia Bulldogs guard Kario Oquendo was a bright spot in 2021-2022. Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

White will have an uphill battle to begin his Georgia career. He will have to improve the roster’s talent level. Georgia did have some bad luck with injuries in 2021-2022, but the Bulldogs need more talent.

Georgia had 10 players added to the roster last offseason. UGA needs to add some recruits or transfers to the class of 2022.

Mike White played college basketball in the SEC at Ole Miss from 1995 to 1999. He helped Ole Miss make three NCAA Tournaments and later served as an assistant coach for Ole Miss.

White served as the head coach of Louisiana Tech from 2011 to 2015. White had been Florida’s head coach since 2015.

How did Georgia basketball Twitter react to Mike White’s hiring at Georgia?

Georgia basketball has different expectations than Florida basketball:

Was Florida considering moving on from Mike White? Probably not, but if they were, then the Gators saved some money.

Ole Miss vs Missouri Game Preview, SEC Tournament

Why Ole Miss Will Win

Ole Miss should be able to crank up the threes enough to stay in this.

It lost seven of its last eight games because the scoring punch hasn’t been there and the defense has been a giant problem. On the plus side, Missouri isn’t sign to light it up.

It’s struggling to get anything consistently going with too many turnovers and absolutely nothing happening from three. Worse yet, Mizzou can’t guard the three. However …

Why Missouri Will Win

As bad as the Tigers have been, they managed to beat Ole Miss twice.

They rolled to a 25 point win in the first meeting in January, and won with one of its better shooting days of the year in February.

Ole Miss might be able to hit the three, but it’s not putting up enough points on the board. It’s having a hard time getting to 70 points and the consistency just isn’t there.

Worse yet, it’s not getting to the free throw line. Any sort of a push from Missouri early on will make it tough, but …

Ole Miss vs Missouri: What’s Going To Happen

Ole Miss is overdue for a big performance.

It’s coming up with takeaways and it’s okay at guarding the three. That should be enough to keep this low scoring and close. Missouri is having big issues scoring, too.

But not against the Rebels.

The Tigers went off in the first two games, and they’ll work it around enough to come close to 50% from the field in this, too.

Kentucky vs Ole Miss Game Preview

Why Ole Miss Will Win

The Rebels have lost six of their last seven games, but they’re battling.

It’s a decent defensive team from three, it’s been good over the last few games on the free throw line, and there’s just enough ball movement to create points.

Kentucky is coming off a loss to Arkansas after not being able to hit a thing from the outside – that’s been a problem over the last few games.

Why Kentucky Will Win

Kentucky needs this to stay alive in the SEC regular season title chase.

Yeah, it struggled from the outside against Arkansas, it missed a few too many free throws, and the defense wasn’t great … and it lost on the road by two to a strong, fired up team.

Ole Miss isn’t all that bad, but it won’t come close to keeping up on the boards and it won’t shoot well enough to keep up.

After the loss to the Hogs, Kentucky is going to be cranked up to come up with a good performance at home.

It’s 17-0 in Rupp.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s Kentucky’s final home game of the year, and it’s not going to come out light.

After the loss to Arkansas the energy will be there from the start, and Ole Miss won’t be able to keep up from there. A Rebel run will come in the early second half to make the Cats keep trying, but it won’t be enough to get by.

Kentucky will hit enough threes to open it up to stay alive for the SEC regular season title.

Instant Analysis: Point guards heat up, Tigers beat Ole Miss 77-64

Our initial takeaways from the win over Ole Miss.

As they have every time this season, Auburn rebounded from a loss with a win.

No. 4 Auburn (24-3, 13-2 SEC) beat Ole Miss 77-64 in Auburn Arena Wednesday night to complete the season sweep.

Auburn had a double-digit lead most of the half but came out cold to start the second half and saw the lead fall to 3 points.

Two Zep Jasper 3-pointers and great defense soon had Auburn back up by double-digits and Ole Miss was unable to get it any closer.

Auburn’s point guards were a major reason for Auburn’s big win, Jasper and Wendell Green Jr. combined for 29 points and went 7-of-13 from 3-point range. Here are some takeaways from Auburn’s 25th win of the season.

Auburn vs Ole Miss Game Preview

Why Ole Miss Will Win

There’s a decent enough blend of positives about the Ole Miss game to give Auburn a bit of a struggle.

The Rebels are good at forcing takeaways, but they don’t foul a lot. They’re aggressive enough on the boards to be annoying on the offensive side for second chance points, and they’re dangerous when they move the ball around.

They were able to beat Georgia by cranking up the extra pass and making everything from the free throw line, and they hang around teams when they win the battle on the boards.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Auburn Will Win

Good luck trying to get any offensive consistency out of the Ole Miss offense.

It couldn’t mss against Georgia and Missouri, and it beat LSU when it hit 52% from the field, but it went dead cold in key stretches against Florida.

It’s got the ability to score easily when it’s moving the ball around, but it only averages 69 points per game.

Auburn should be jacked up at home after losing to Florida a few days ago, and …

What’s Going To Happen

The Tiger defense should come out roaring.

The three Auburn losses all came on the road – it’s 14-0 at home. Even after the loss it’s still No. 1 in the nation in blocks, No. 9 in rebounds, and it’s allowing just 38% from the field.

Ole Miss is about to have a long day on the boards.

Ole Miss vs LSU Game Preview

Why Ole Miss Will Win

Ole Miss has just enough defense to keep this close.

It might not be a rock at stopping teams from hitting their shots lately – yeah, sort of the whole point of playing defense – but it’s able to generate a whole slew of steals, points off the turnovers, and it should be able to keep this in the 60s.

LSU is a turnover machine.

It might be even better than Ole Miss at forcing mistakes – it leads the nation in steals – but it give the ball away in bunches. It only turned it over nine times against TCU, but lost to the hard-nosed defensive team. Before that, it got off the bus with 15 giveaways.

Ole Miss has to own the glass, make LSU try to shoot threes, and never, ever miss an opportunity because …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why LSU Will Win

Ole Miss stalls too much.

It’s not awful from the field, but it’s not hitting the threes lately. It’s fantastic on the free throw line, but it needs to generate more attempts.

LSU should be able to make up for its desire to seemingly foul everyone with lots and lots of pressure – it’s a wee bit of a high risk, high reward defense – and the defense that’s second in the nation in field goal percentage allowed should be able to clean up.

Ole Miss isn’t great from the field, and it’s not great on the offensive glass. That’s a bad combination against the Tigers.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Be somewhat stunned if this is any sort of a shootout.

LSU just couldn’t get going against TCU in an odd loss, and it’ll sputter at times against the Ole Miss defense. However, it’s better at getting on a roll from three, and it’s better defensively at keeping limited offenses from going off.

Best Auburn Twitter replies to Ole Miss basketball

Auburn fans continue to terrorize opposing teams on Twitter.

Auburn needed a second half rally to earn a tough 80-71 win over Ole Miss Saturday night.

After struggling with foul trouble the last couple games, Walker Kessler showed just how important he is, recording a double-double with 20 rebounds and 10 points. He added seven blocks and four steals.

Jabari Smith Jr. was his usual self, adding 15 points and seeming to make a basket every time Ole Miss tried to come back in the second half.

As usual, Auburn fans were quick to flood the mentions of Ole Miss, responding over 2,000 times in under 30 minutes. Here are some of the best replies.

Takeaways from Auburn’s 80-71 win over Ole Miss

Auburn’s resiliency showed yet again in a road win over Ole Miss.

Word of the day: resiliency. “The capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.”

That is Auburn basketball.

On Saturday night, the Tigers picked up a nine-point win against an Ole Miss team that did everything they could to try and come away with a victory. Unfortunately, the shots that the Rebels were knocking down at a blistering pace in the first half did not fall in the second.

Auburn (16-1, 5-0 SEC) finished the game shooting an even 50% from the floor themselves, led by big man Walker Kessler, who finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 blocks.

Could we see Bruce Pearl & Co. ranked No. 1 in next week’s AP Poll? We’ll have to wait and see.

Here are five takeaways from No. 4 Auburn’s 80-71 win over the Ole Miss Rebels.

Twitter reacts to Auburn’s loss to Ole Miss

Auburn fans weren’t happy with the charge call against Sharife Cooper or the Tigers blowing another big lead in the loss to Ole Miss.

Auburn lost to Ole Miss 86-84 today. Now I’ve got one word to say to you all about this: inexplicable. Despite leading by double digits the Tigers couldn’t come away with a win and they advance to 10-10 overall.

Large leads aren’t safe with this Auburn team. Remember that 12-point lead Auburn had over Arkansas at halftime that just mysteriously evaporated? Oh, and that blown call at the end of the game where Sharife got mugged yeah that sucked too. This time the officials gifted us with a phantom charge call against Sharife that robbed the Tigers of a bucket and eventually set up Ole Miss to tie the game.

I’m tired y’all, but I still love Auburn. Here’s Twitter’s reactions.
