Mississippi State set to hire Alabama OLB Coach Coleman Hutzler as their next DC

Alabama football set to lose first coach from 2023 coaching staff

The season isn’t even over yet, but the annual Alabama Crimson Tide coaching staff purge has already begun. That is the gift and the curse of Nick Saban’s greatness. He elevates coaches and gets the absolute most out of them just to have opposing schools come in and snipe his hires.

The first member of the 2023 Crimson Tide staff to depart will be OLB and Special Teams coach Coleman Hutzler as Mississippi State is currently in the process of finalizing Hutlzer as their new defensive coordinator. Hopefully, Coleman is the only one we lose, but that’s just never how it goes.

It has been a difficult year in Starkville after the passing of Mike Leach on Dec. 12, 2022 and they are yet to find stability in the program. After Leach’s passing, the Bulldogs promoted DC Zach Arnett to become the programs 35th coach. Arnett was ultimately fired after a 4-6 start this season so the Bulldogs will be rolling into 2024 as a brand new regime.

Mississippi State hired Oklahoma OC Jeff Lebby as their next head coach earlier in the week to help turn the program around. Hutzler is one of the first hires Lebby has made, and it is a massive one at that. People around the Alabama program speak and think very highly of Hutzler so it’s a loss that I’m sure stings Saban a bit.

Detroit Lions to host Will Anderson Jr. ahead of 2023 NFL draft

Will Anderson Jr. will visit the Detroit Lions just weeks before the 2023 NFL draft is scheduled to begin.

The Detroit Lions will reportedly be hosting former Alabama outside linebacker Will Anderson Jr. for a visit just a few weeks before the 2023 NFL draft.

Anderson has only taken one other visit this offseason, which was to the Houston Texans. Only having two visits is a bit of a surprise considering he is projected to be selected within the first 10 picks of the draft.

The Lions currently hold pick No. 6 and are one of only a few teams in the top 10 that are not in need of a quarterback.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Anderson and other former Alabama players as the 2023 NFL draft process winds down.

Broncos OLB Bradley Chubb found his formula for 2022 offseason

“What things can I do to make me … come into different workouts feeling my best? I [found] that formula, and I’ve been sticking with it ever since.”

The artist Kanye West raps “N-Now th-that that don’t kill me can only make me stronger.”

It’s words that’ll soundtrack fifth-year edge rusher Bradley Chubb‘s season. Which is a contract year.

After totaling 12 sacks as a rookie, Chubb has missed 24 games the past three seasons. He has just 8.5 sacks in that span, including zero last season (seven games).

With Von Miller gone, Randy Gregory signed earlier this offseason and Nik Botinno drafted less than two months ago, Chubb needs a rookie-like season to stick around in Denver beyond next season. In addition to the aforementioned three edge rushers, the Broncos have undrafted free agent gem Malik Reed in the tuck. The team also moved former inside linebacker Baron Browning to the edge this offseason, while signing another potential undrafted free agent gem Christopher Allen. The Broncos are loaded on the edge.

Good thing for Chubb, he’s self-aware.

“The beginning of [the offseason] was challenging for me,” Chubb said on June 6. “It was my first time in this position where I wasn’t worried about recovering from an injury or worried about this or that. For the first couple weeks, I was trying to figure out what makes me, me. What things can I do to make me feel good [that will help me] come into different workouts feeling my best? I got that formula, and I’ve been sticking with it ever since.

“I’ve been feeling good coming out here to practice with these guys, and it’s been fun. People say, ‘be a pro’ and ‘have that schedule.’ I feel like I finally have that down.”

This latest development doubles down on what Chubb said earlier this offseason. The Broncos wrapped up mandatory minicamp last week. Here are the main takeaways going into the summer.

Texas flips three star linebacker originally committed to Utah

After signing all 16 players on NSD yesterday, Texas landed another one. This time it was three-star LB Jaylan Ford out of Frisco, TX.

After signing all 16 players on National Signing Day yesterday, Texas landed another recruit on Thursday. This time it was three-star linebacker Jaylan Ford out of Frisco, TX. Ford was originally a Utah commit and said he would join the Utes on Oct. 8. He switched to Texas this morning, announcing his decision via Twitter.

According to 247Sports, Ford is 6 feet 2.5 inches and weighs 205 pounds. Coming out of Lone Star High School, he was the district 5-5A-1 defensive MVP in his junior season. Officially listed as an outsider linebacker, Ford joins Highland Park’s Prince Dorbah as the only other OLB in the 2020 class.

This is the third recruit that Texas and Utah have gone back and forth with this season. Four-star defensive end Van Fillinger and three-star all-purpose back Ty Jordan were both once Texas commits that ended up signing with the Utes.

Texas now sits at No. 9 on the 247Sports team rankings after finishing yesterday at No. 10. Ford is the fourth four-star the Longhorns have signed in 2020, getting their 17th player of the cycle.
