Titans invite Warren G’s son, Olaijah Griffin, to minicamp

The Titans have extended a minicamp invite to XFL DB Olaijah Griffin, who is also the son of legendary rapper Warren G.

The Tennessee Titans have extended a minicamp invite to XFL and Seattle Sea Dragons defensive back, Olaijah Griffin.

Griffin, who was signed by the Sea Dragons last month, has had a cup of coffee with a pair of NFL teams — including the Buffalo Bills and New York Giants — but has never played a snap in a regular season game.

An undrafted free agent out of USC in 2021, Griffin compiled 67 total tackles (2.5 for loss), one interception and 13 passes defensed over 22 contests with the Trojans over three years.

Perhaps most notably, Griffin is connected to a pair of legends, as he’s the son of rapper Warren G and the nephew of rapper/producer Dr. Dre.

Back in 2021, Griffin referenced the infamous song done by his father and the late Nate Dogg called “Regulate” when announcing his signing with the Bills, which is just awesome.

After the Titans hold rookie minicamp this week, the team will turn its attention to OTAs on May 22.

Giants add DT Aaron Crawford to practice squad, release DB Olaijah Griffin

The New York Giants have signed DT Aaron Crawford to the practice squad and released DB Olaijah Griffin.

Editor’s note: The Giants terminated the contract of Aaron Crawford on Wednesday morning, less than 48 hours after he was signed.

With a need at defensive tackle after Nick Williams (biceps) landed on injured reserve, the New York Giants shuffled their practice squad a bit on Tuesday.

The team announced that defensive tackle Aaron Crawford had been signed. And in an effort to clear additional room for some upcoming moves, the Giants also released defensive back Olaijah Griffin from the reserve unit.

Crawford originally signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 2020 where he played under current Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. The 6-foot-1, 315-pounder remained with Baltimore until being released on September 1.

In one career game (2020), Crawford has recorded one tackle.

Griffin, the son of Warren G and nephew of Dr. Dre, was claimed off waivered from the Buffalo Bills in mid-August and released two weeks later. The Giants re-signed him to their practice squad on September 28.

The team also worked out defensive tackle Anthony Rush, but he was not immediately signed.

The Giants currently have one open spot on their practice squad and two open spots on their 53-man roster.

Giants place Sterling Shepard on IR, sign Fabian Moreau off practice squad

The New York Giants have placed WR Sterling Shepard on IR, signed DB Fabian Moreau to the 53-man roster and added two to the practice squad.

The New York Giants have placed wide receiver Sterling Shepard on season-ending injured reserve after he suffered a torn ACL in Week 3 against the Dallas Cowboys.

“He’s a tremendous person. He worked so diligently to get back, and (I) feel terrible for him that he had that injury,” head coach Brian Daboll said. “He’s a big part of our team, and we’ll miss him out on the field.”

Replacing Shepard on the team’s 53-man roster is veteran cornerback Fabian Moreau, who was signed off of the practice squad.

Moreau had been activated in each of the previous two weeks, taking a combined 56 defensive snaps while recording six tackles. He’s also seen time on special teams.

With two spots open on the practice squad, the Giants signed wide receiver Makai Polk and defensive back Olaijah Griffin to the reserve unit.

Griffin, the son of famous rapper Warren G, had previously been with the team, having been claimed off of waivers from the Buffalo Bills in mid-August. He was released two weeks later.

Polk originally signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted rookie free agent in May and later spent time on their practice squad until being released earlier this week.

In addition to Griffin and Polk, the Giants also worked out defensive backs Mark Gilbert and Tim Harris.

Update: The Giants also made a separate practice squad transaction, re-signing running back Antonio Williams to the reserve unit and releasing offensive tackle Roy Mbaeteka.

USC’s New York alumni group increases: Olaijah Griffin goes to the Giants

Olaijah Griffin joins Adoree Jackson and Leonard Williams on the Giants. When #USC visits Rutgers in Big Ten football, all 3 Trojans might be able to attend.

USC will have to travel to the state of New Jersey as a member of the Big Ten. USC will have Rutgers as part of its schedule at some point in the future. When the Trojans eventually do make the trek to New Jersey, they might have a larger cheering section on their sideline against the Scarlet Knights, though this is two years away from potentially happening.

We don’t know if USC will play Rutgers in 2024, or 2025, or 2026. If the New York Giants have a strong defense in the next few seasons, however, there’s a chance that three USC standouts could support the Trojans in New Jersey.

Leonard Williams and Adoree Jackson are already on the Giants’ roster. They represent USC on Big Blue. Now they have another Trojan coming to New Jersey to join them.

Olaijah Griffin, recently waived by the Buffalo Bills, was picked up by the Giants. Griffin gains Jackson as a mentor in the Giants’ secondary. With Williams up front, the Giants are acquiring a greater USC flavor on the defensive side of the ball.

Griffin is trying to stick on an NFL roster. It is notable that former Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, now the head coach of the Giants, will be coaching him. It brings up the question: Did Daboll see something about Griffin when he was with the Bills which convinced him and the Giants to bring Griffin aboard? That could be an encouraging sign, though we’ll have to wait and see.

Giants claim former Bills CB Olaijah Griffin off waivers

#Giants claim former #Bills CB Olaijah Griffin off waivers:

The New York Giants have claimed cornerback Olaijah Griffin off of waivers from the Buffalo Bills, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

The defender was released by the Bills on Sunday following the team’s 27-24 preseason win over the Indianapolis Colts. Buffalo cut him in the team’s efforts to get under 85 players by the NFL’s deadline on Wednesday.

Griffin is the latest Bills player to follow the trail blazed before him to the Giants.

That began when New York hired former Buffalo offensive coordinator Brian Daboll as the team’s head coach this spring. That makes plenty of sense considering the familiarity.

Griffin signed with the Bills as an undrafted free agent after the 2021 NFL draft.

He spent last season on the Bills’ practice squad. In January, Griffin had signed a futures contract with the Bills.

Giants claim Warren G’s son, Olaijah Griffin, off waivers from Bills

The New York Giants have claimed the son of Warren G and step-nephew of Dr. Dre, Olaijah Griffin, off waivers from the Buffalo Bills.

The New York Giants claimed defensive back Olaijah Griffin off of waivers from the Buffalo Bills on Monday, bringing their roster to 88 men. That will need to be trimmed to 85 on Tuesday.

Griffin was signed by the Bills as an undrafted free agent out of USC in 2021. He spent his entire rookie season on their practice squad and has not yet appeared in an NFL game.

To the likely delight of wide receiver Kadarius Toney, who goes by the rap name “Yung Joka,” Griffin is the son of rapper Warren G and the step-nephew of rapper/producer Dr. Dre. The locker room rap battles are sure to be off the hook.

Meanwhile, two former Giants have also found new homes.

Defensive tackle Danny Shelton, who spent the 2021 season with the Giants, was officially signed by the Kansas City Chiefs. And linebacker Niko Lalos, who spent two seasons in East Rutherford and has a fan base that includes LeBron James, signed with the New Orleans Saints.

Lalos had been released by the Giants last week.

PFF praises UDFA signing the Bills made

Olaijah Griffin was a UDFA signing made by the Buffalo Bills that was praised by Pro Football Focus.

There’s nothing set in stone for undrafted rookie free agents. Each and every one of them will have to fight day in and day out at training camp for a final roster spot on any NFL roster.

However, Pro Football Focus is a fan of one of the reported signings the Bills made following the 2021 NFL draft. That player is USC cornerback Olaijah Griffin.

PFF named Griffin as one of their top-10 UDFA signings, slotting him in at No. 4 overall:

There isn’t a wide receiver on the planet Griffin isn’t willing to go up against, and that’s both a blessing and curse for the undersized corner. Griffin arrived at USC at 172 pounds and left at 175, which is a small cause for concern, but that lack of size did not stop him from posting the 12th-highest coverage grade by a cornerback in 2020 at 81.5.

The former Trojan has displayed a physical playstyle despite his size but makes up for it with great feet and an elite ability to break on routes. He compares to a more explosive Levi Wallace, another undrafted free agent signed by the Bills. Wallace has been a serviceable member for Buffalo, allowing a sub-85.0 passer rating allowed on throws into his coverage in two of his three seasons.

While undersized and undrafted, Griffin still might be a factor in the Bills’ offseason plans.

As PFF lays out, Griffin has talent despite his size. But his size is something that’s teachable. Perhaps in the pros, when all he’s focusing on is football, he’ll manage to add some weight which might go a long way because Griffin does still have length to him at 6-foot tall.

As far as PFF is concerned, Griffin might factor into the No. 2 cornerback battle for the Bills this offseason, which will include Wallace and 2020 seventh-round pick Dane Jackson. In his pre-draft scouting report, The Draft Network pegged Griffin as an outside cornerback in the NFL.

Rapper Warren G.’s son Olaijah Griffin could be a 2021 NFL draft pick

The “Regulate” rapper’s son could be selected.

USC cornerback Olaijah Griffin has paved his own path in his collegiate career.

But as the 2021 NFL draft approaches, it’s also worth reminding you all that he’s the son of rapper Warren G. of Regulate fame, and — per an article on USC’s site — he’s close with both Snoop Dogg (who was in attendance for the moment he committed to the Trojans) and Dr. Dre. As far as I can tell from mock drafts and projections, it seems like he could be a Day 3 pick in the later rounds.

In 2018, Griffin watched as his dad popped a balloon to announce he was committing to USC, and as I mentioned, there was Snoop!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuF5Rzs4Yts

And if you’re wondering if Olaijah listens to his dad’s music? Here’s an answer via the OC Register:

It’s almost game time, and USC is readying to take the field. Players go through their final preparations, whether it’s reviewing scouting notes or talking game plan with teammates.

For Olaijah Griffin, the Trojan cornerback needs to listen to one last song. And for that song, he always returns to his roots: “This D.J.” by his father, Warren G.

It’s got a classic West Coast hip-hop vibe to it, with winding synthesizers and deliberate drumming that accentuates his father’s flowing verse and chorus that embody the day-in-the-life vibe of many ’90s rap songs.

“It reminds me of myself, because it was my dad who inspired other people and it’s his life story and I feel like it relates to me,” Griffin says. “It turns me up.”

And here’s Warren G. in a 2019 interview with Hop Hop DX talking about his son:

That’s my guy. As a dad, I can’t even begin to explain how cool it is. At first, my other son Warren was better. Olaijah was a water boy in Pop Warner and couldn’t really play. And then he started practicing and was running faster than everybody. He finally got his chance, and when they gave him the ball as a running back that first time, he ran the ball 65 yards for a touchdown and did a frontflip. When I saw that, I thought to myself, ‘he is different.’ Just to support my boys from Pop Warner till now was one of the best things in the world for a dad.

We’ll see what happens next week.

2021 NFL draft: 5 sleeper cornerbacks Chargers could target

The Los Angeles Chargers will go into this year’s draft, looking to bolster the cornerback room.

Every draft class includes a handful of sleepers waiting to surprise the rest of the league and force senses of regret upon the teams that passed on them.

The Chargers could take a cornerback in the early rounds, but the chances of head coach Brandon Staley wanting to build the secondary with his own guys are high. Therefore, he could choose to take more than one.

With that being said, here are five cornerbacks who aren’t receiving a lot of buzz that Los Angeles could target in this year’s draft.

Benjamin St-Juste, Minnesota

St-Juste, a transfer from Michigan to Minnesota, didn’t necessarily fill up the stat sheet. Over 18 games played between the two schools, he only logged 62 total tackles, 11 passes defensed with zero interceptions. However, the numbers don’t necessarily replicate his actual impact on the field.

Hailing at 6-foot-3 and 208 pounds with a wingspan of more than 80 inches, St-Juste uses his length and strength to his advantage to jam receivers at the line of scrimmage and at the catch point to disrupt throwing lanes. He also has fantastic agility and flexibility.

With L.A., St-Juste could be a versatile defensive back who plays on the outside and some safety. His deep speed, length and strength would carry over well as a gunner or jammer on special teams, as well.

Tre Brown, Oklahoma

Starting 33 out of 51 games, Brown made his impact as the Sooners’ outside cornerback. In four seasons, he posted 141 tackles, 31 passes defensed, 8.5 tackles for loss and four interceptions. Despite having a smaller stature at 5-foot-9 at 188 pounds, he was a shutdown outside corner over his college career.

Brown is an excellent athlete who possesses speed, explosiveness and quickness. Those traits show in press-man coverage, where uses his quick feet to mirror and break quickly with receivers at the top of the route and make plays, even against wideouts 30 pounds heavier.

With the Chargers, Brown could be a versatile corner who plays both inside or outside due to his quickness. He also has a ton of special teams experience that would serve him well in a variety of roles, whether it’s as a returner, gunner or jammer.

Shakur Brown, Michigan State

Brown burst onto the scene in 2020 for the Spartans, playing the best football of his collegiate career. The 5-foot-11 and 190-pound corner posted 25 tackles, five interceptions, four passes defended in seven games played.

Brown was one of the nation’s top playmakers, showing plus instincts, use of hands in press-man coverage, and awareness to decipher route combinations. Along with that, he does a fine job at playing with his back to the quarterback and shows good ball skills to come away with the rock.

Brown missed multiple games in 2019 due to an injury. But those concerns aside, he has key traits that can’t be taught that will allow him to rise to the top of a depth chart quickly, capable of playing inside or outside at the next next level.

Rodarius Williams, Oklahoma State

Williams, the younger brother of Browns corner Greedy, started 48 consecutive games who showed outstanding development during the course of his career, becoming one of the top corners in 2020. He finished with 27 passes defensed and two interceptions.

Standing at 5-foot-11 and 189 pounds, Williams solidified himself as one of the top corners in man coverage, showing hip fluidity, speed and short-area quickness to stay glued to receivers. While he didn’t post a lot of interceptions, Williams is always in position to make a play on the ball.

Williams does need to improve against the run, but with his skills in coverage and his traits tailor-made to be a core special teamer, he could be primed for a long and successful NFL career.

Olaijah Griffin, USC

The son of famous rapper Warren G, Griffin, a highly touted five-star recruit, played for three seasons with the Trojans. In 15 starts, Griffin accounted for 67 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 13 passes defended, and one interception.

Standing at 6-foot and 175 pounds, Griffin shows excellent athleticism, acceleration to turn and run with receivers, competitive nature & good use of hands at the line of scrimmage in press to disrupt the release, and the short-area quickness to close on receivers.

At the next level, Griffin must add some mass to his frame, improve his play strength and discipline in man coverage. But overall, his intriguing traits will enable him to become a starting corner down the road, projecting best on the outside where he can utilize his deep speed and reactive quickness.

Colts’ 7-round mock draft following Carson Wentz trade

Updated mock draft after the Carson Wentz trade.

The Indianapolis Colts made a major move on Thursday when they agreed to trade two draft picks to the Philadelphia Eagles for quarterback Carson Wentz.

Now that they have their quarterback of the immediate future, it’s time to figure out how the Colts might go about the draft. Of course with free agency yet to arrive, it isn’t all that clear how the team will go about using their selections.

But with Wentz as the quarterback now, the draft could go a bit differently as they focus on other positions. Using The Draft Network’s mock draft machine, here’s an updated mock draft following the Wentz trade:
