Oklahoma vs Baylor Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Is a rested Oklahoma ready for the finishing kick?

No, the schedule hasn’t been all that amazing so far, but it hasn’t been totally awful. Even so, a team in the hunt for the College Football Playoff should be a whole lot stronger than it’s been. However …

There’s a scoreboard for a reason.

OU was awful against Kansas – for a half. Lost in the miserable performance were the 35 points scores in the second half. Also lost is how Oklahoma won their last three games by double-digits and have now scored 52 or more in three of the last four games.

No, the defense hasn’t been strong enough overall, but it takes the ball away and is good at buckling down in the red zone. Yes the team has been wildly inconsistent, but it’s also among the best teams in the country offensively, in passing, on third downs, and there are few attacks with more explosion.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Baylor Will Win

The running game has to be rolling from the start.

Teams tend to get away from grinding it out against Oklahoma because games start to get into shootouts, but it’s possible to run on this group.

Baylor is getting a monster season out of the running back combination of Abram Smith and Trestan Ebner, with Smith on fire with three straight games of 125 yards or more while averaging over seven yards per carry.

The Bears are great against the run, the offensive line has been great, and at home, it should have the consistency and pop to pounce when Oklahoma takes its weekly nap for about 12-20 minutes.

What’s Going To Happen

You know how this works for Oklahoma.

It looks rough for stretches, the defense gives up scoring drives, and it looks like it’s all going to fall apart, and then …

Caleb Williams goes and does something Heisman-worth, the O decides it’s time to kick it all in, and the pop will come with a few big runs and a home run from the passing attack.

Why Baylor Will Win

The Bears keep forcing takeaways.

The passing game kicked in last week against Kansas State – and hasn’t been all that bad – and the ground game finally worked a few weeks ago in a loss to Texas Tech, but to have any shot against the Sooners, creating turnovers is a must.

The Bears have yet to lose the turnover margin and they’ve forced eight turnovers over the last three games.

Oklahoma doesn’t have a turnover issue, but when it starts screwing up, it does it big-time with nine of the 11 coming in three games.

The Sooners get penalized too much, the offensive line allows too many plays in the backfield, and …

Week 14 College Schedule

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Sooner offense is rolling.

The two losses to Kansas State and Iowa State – collapsing in both games – are a killer now that the team is playing like it’s supposed to.

The passing game is sharper, the explosion is there, and the team is starting to dominate the mediocre league, hanging up 41 points or more in four of the last five games with a steady balance and enough big plays from the passing game to put games away fast.

Baylor’s offensive line hasn’t been great, the running game isn’t anything impressive, and there aren’t enough third down conversions to slow things down when the Sooner offense gets going.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

It’s amazing how things have changed in a year.

Baylor had Oklahoma dead, right up until Jalen Hurts came up with one of the most impressive comebacks in Big 12 history.

The Bears almost pulled out the Big 12 Championship to be off to the College Football Playoff, but came up short.

Now Baylor is just hoping for another win.

Oklahoma, though, it playing a peak efficiency. The running game is strong, Spencer Rattler is growing into the gig, and the receivers are getting stronger and stronger.

Baylor can’t keep up.

Oklahoma at Baylor odds: Sooners favored in titanic battle

Previewing Saturday’s Oklahoma at Baylor college football matchup, with college football betting odds, picks and best bets

[jwplayer 64hUO9C8]

The Oklahoma Sooners (8-1, 5-1 Big 12) and Baylor Bears (9-0, 6-0) square off at McLane Stadium on the banks of the Brazos River in Waco, Texas, at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. The Sooners look to deal the Bears their first loss of the season and derail their College Football Playoff chances while simultaneously enhancing their own.

We analyze the Oklahoma-Baylor odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Oklahoma at Baylor: Three things you need to know

1. Oklahoma enters the game ranked 10th in the College Football Playoff rankings, while Baylor checks in 13th despite the unblemished record — two spots behind a two-loss Florida team.

2. Oklahoma WR CeeDee Lamb racked up 167 receiving yards with two touchdowns in last week’s 42-41 shootout win against Iowa State, and he earned Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.

3. Baylor will look to apply pressure on dynamic QB Jalen Hurts. The Bears lead the Big 12 conference with 29 sacks.

Prediction

Moneyline (ML)

Oklahoma (-371) heads into this one as an overwhelming favorite on the road despite Baylor (+280) and its unbeaten record. If any team is worth rolling the dice on, it’s the Bears, as you can nearly triple your money. Still, I expect Oklahoma to grind out a win in a one-possession game.

Against the Spread (ATS)

BAYLOR (+10.5, -115) has the horses to hang with Oklahoma (-10.5, -106). QB Charlie Brewer has completed 67.3 percent of his passes for 2,338 yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions this season, and WR Denzel Mims (44-675-8) leads the way at receiver. The Bears are 6-1 ATS in the past seven against winning teams, and 5-2 ATS in the past seven Big 12 battles.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER (67.5, -110) is a strong play with both of these high-octane offenses. The over is 18-7-1 in the past 26 overall for Oklahoma, and 8-3 in the past 11 against winning teams. The over is 20-8 in Baylor’s past 28 at home against winning teams on the road, and 5-1 in the past six meetings in Waco, too.

Why Oklahoma Will Win

No, really. Have you seen what Jalen Hurts is doing?

America might have handed Joe Burrow the Heisman already, but with the national spotlight back on the Sooners, don’t be so fast to count out No. 1 once he gets a chance to reintroduce himself to the college football public.

Shhhhhhhhh, but he’s been better than Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield.

He’s hitting 73% of his passes with 24 touchdowns and four picks, and he’s already up to a seemingly effortless 869 rushing yards and 15 scores. In full control of the attack, he’s about to hit a Baylor defense that’s been great, but struggled against the Texas Tech quick-hitting offense and hasn’t needed to get into too many firefights.

The Sooners might be a bit inconsistent lately, but when they’ve been on, they can turn the lights out in a flash. It helps that the O isn’t screwing things up along the way.

Baylor hasn’t been living on turnover margin, but it’s been a massive plus. The Oklahoma offensive style should negate the fantastic Bear pass rush, and Hurts isn’t going to make enough massive mistakes to matter – the Sooners have only lost the ball ten times so far. However …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Baylor Will Win

You’re dead against the Sooners if you can’t at least make Hurts move around a bit, and Baylor has the ability to get behind the line and not let him get too comfortable.

Of course Hurts is deadly when he’s in the open field or getting to improvise, but he doesn’t get enough credit for being able to simply go through his progressions and make the solid throw to spring the big play. Baylor can take that away.

There’s also the issue of a defense that’s starting to creep back into its old, ugly self.

For two games in a row, the Sooners were lit up by a solid Big 12 quarterback. Kansas State’s Skylar Thompson threw or over 200 yards and ran for four touchdowns in the win. Last week, it was Iowa State’s Brock Purdy who went off for five touchdown passes, a rushing score, and came within a two-point conversion of pulling off the massive comeback win.

This is Charlie Brewer’s moment.

Steady, he threw three picks against Texas Tech, one interception last week, and that’s been it for the turnovers. He’s cool under fire, can run enough to be a problem, and he’s got the weapons around him to let others do the work.

This might not be an explosive offense like Oklahoma has, but it’s been able to answer the call in tight battle after tight battle.

Oh, and by the way – looking at you, College Football Playoff committee – Baylor actually beat Kansas State. Oklahoma didn’t.

[lawrence-related id=499899]

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t be totally stunned if we’re about to see Minnesota-Penn State II here.

Baylor doesn’t have a chance … it hasn’t beaten anyone … it doesn’t have the weapons and talent Oklahoma has …

All the talking points were used last week against the Gophers.

Oklahoma has only beaten two teams certain to go bowling – Texas and Iowa State – and both were massive battles. It lost to the other team on the slate that’s a lock for a swag bag game.

Baylor won’t have quite enough to pull this one out, but it’ll get a huge day out of Brewer and an offense that will slow it down just enough to keep Hurts on the sidelines. But Hurts will be the star of the show as he has enough highlight moments to cement him in the No. 2 spot in the Heisman chase.
