CFN predicts third-place finish for the Longhorns in 2020

College Football News released their record predictions for all Power Five teams. Texas would finish 3rd in the Big 12 Conference.

[jwplayer W7Ya6Z6o]

With the college football season approaching in just over 68 days, plenty of websites and media outlets are producing predictions. One such publication, College Football News, recently released its record predictions for every power five conference school.

According to the prediction, the Texas Longhorns finish the regular season 8-4. While that would be a one-game improvement from the 2019 campaign, it still feels like that would be a letdown season for the Longhorns. Likely leads to another Valero Alamo Bowl game for Texas. Therein lies the real disappointment, playing in a non-New Year’s Six bowl game.

After positing a 10-4 record in head coach Tom Herman’s second season for the Longhorns, expectations reached a fever pitch. It only came crashing down when the Longhorns received a bowl bid to the Alamo City Bowl. A return trip is not what anyone at Texas is looking for in 2020. While Herman isn’t on the hot seat, a disappointing year with no improvement in 2020 could force that conversation for 2021.

The CFN projection has Texas third in the conference behind Oklahoma State (10-2) and Oklahoma (11-1). The Longhorns will likely need to beat both the Cowboys and Sooners to have a shot at the Big 12 Championship this season.

Big 12 Final Standings Projection per CFN

  1. Oklahoma (11-1)
  2. Oklahoma State (10-2)
  3. Texas (8-4)
  4. Iowa State (7-5)
  5. Kansas State (7-5)
  6. Baylor (6-6)
  7. TCU (6-6)
  8. Texas Tech (6-6)
  9. West Virginia (5-7)
  10. Kansas (4-8)

Former Colorado star Alfred Williams says Mike Gundy called him racial slur in 1989 game

A day or so after calming a controversy with Oklahoma State’s Chuba Hubbard, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy is back on the hot seat.

The past, as well as the present, could have a large role in determining Mike Gundy’s future as head football coach at Oklahoma State.

In the same week when star running back Chuba Hubba revolted after seeing his coach in an OAN shirt on a fishing trip with his sons, news has bubbled up. FS1’s Shannon Sharpe told of how Gundy, then an Oklahoma State quarterback, is alleged to have used the “N-word” when the Cowboys were being routed by Colorado in 1989.

Sharpe relayed a text conversation he had with former Broncos teammate and ex-Colorado star Alfred Williams. The discussion revolved around Gundy’s comments in a 41-17 loss to the Buffaloes.

Williams, a first-round pick of the Bengals in 1991 who spent nine seasons in the NFL and won a pair of Super Bowls with the Broncos, told Sharpe Gundy directed a racial slur at Williams.

Sharpe brought the incident up on his FS1 show Wednesday.
“He said, ‘We were getting after ’em and I sacked him (Gundy) and he called me ‘N,'” Sharpe said quoting Williams. After the game — which Colorado won 41-17 — reporters asked Williams why he was so animated and “he blurted out, Mike Gundy called me N — and he actually said the word.”

Williams confirmed it happened on his KOA radio show in Denver.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Williams said. “There’s no walking that back. This story’s been out there for 31 years.”

Williams added that it’s the only time that happened to him.

“I didn’t back down then,” Williams said, “I don’t back down now. . . . Every time I see him, I just want to run through him. Every time I see his face, every time I look at him, I want to run through him. . . . I’m 51 years old; why in the world do I need to lie about that?”

Gundy denied the accusations in 1989.

His denial included: “I’ve been here four years and half my friends are Black. I would never say that.”

Throw in comments about COVID-19 in April that forced another apology from the coach who has been in his position since 2005 and one has to wonder what Oklahoma State’s administration is going to do.

Gundy said in a conference call with reporters that the media has been too negative in its coverage of what he called the “Chinese virus.”

That brought this account of being sorry:

“I have been made aware that comments from my press conference have offended some,” Gundy said in a statement. “It was never my intention to offend anyone and I apologize. My first priority is and will always be the student-athletes and doing what is best for the program and the university.

“We will adhere to the advice of public health experts who are making informed decisions in the best interest of the citizens of our nation and state based on sound scientific data,” the university statement said. “We will also abide by the federal and state mandates as well as Big 12 guidelines. We will not compromise the health and well-being of our campus community. This virus is deadly and we will do our part at Oklahoma State to help blunt the spread.”

Oklahoma State football players threaten boycott over Mike Gundy’s T-shirt

Mike Gundy has repeatedly showed an affinity for a far-right news network.

Mike Gundy’s T-shirt choice — showing his affinity for a far-right news network — is damaging his relationship with players at Oklahoma State. The Cowboys coach wore a “One America News Network” shirt while fishing last week, and his guide posted a photo of the outing on social media.

The Washington Post classified OAN as “the most fervently pro-Trump cable network” and said the network “offers a concise lesson in creating fake news.” CNN has documented how The White House has helped elevate the station. Gundy, meanwhile, addressed what appeals to him about the station during a tone-deaf rant about the novel coronavirus pandemic in April.

“It’s One America News,” Gundy said, via Yahoo! “It was so refreshing. They just report the news. There’s no commentary. There’s no opinions. There’s no left. There’s no right.”

That couldn’t be further from the truth (The Atlantic profiled the network last month in a story headlined “Trump’s Favorite TV Network Is Post-parody.”)

Gundy’s renewed support for the station months later — now that focus has shifted from COVID-19 to police reform and fighting systemic racism in the wake of the police killing George Floyd — is costing him support from his players.

Running back Chuba Hubbard, the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year as a sophomore, was the first to speak out against Gundy, saying via Twitter that he would “not be doing anything with Oklahoma State until things CHANGE.”

Linebackers Amen Ogbongbemiga and Devin Harper said they will stand with Hubbard.

Former OSU and current Baltimore Ravens running back Justice Hill also weighed in with his support.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Oklahoma State Cowboys Offense 3 Things To Know

The Oklahoma State offense was terrific, but for the second straight season it suffered a few strange power outages. With so many shootouts in the Big 12, the offense has to keep scoring on a consistent basis, going 2-8 over the last two seasons when scoring 31 points or fewer.

Putting up points in bunches shouldn’t be a problem with this year’s group.

A few starters are done on the line, but nine regular starters are expected back overall including – potentially – some of the most dangerous skill starts in college football. It all starts with …

Chuba Hubbard is back. He would’ve been one of the top running backs off the board had he left early for the NFL, but now he’s back after running for close to 2,100 yards with 21 touchdowns as one of the fastest and most consistent backs in the country. Now it’s time to give him a little more help.

Senior LD Brown added 221 yards and two scores, and JUCO transfer Dezmon Jackson will start to get more work after seeing a little time in a few games. The offensive line will be good enough to give them all room to move.

The tackles are set, and getting West Virginia transfer Josh Sills helps fill in a gap at guard. Overall, though, the front five can’t allow so many tackles for loss and have to do a better job in pass protection.

For now, Spencer Sanders appears to be the main man to run the attack. He had a few down games, threw too many picks, and was banged up late in the year, but he runs well and should be past the freshman inconsistencies – at least, that’s the hope.

He’s not a 100% lock for the gig, though, with 6-5, 226-pound freshman Shane Illingworth good enough to take over right away. No matter who’s under center, the receivers will be there to shine.

The receiving corps has the potential to be devastating it the main man is healthy. Tylan Wallace was on his way to a special season before suffering a torn ACL. He caught 53 passes for 903 yard and eight scores before going down, but that allowed Dillon Stoner and junior Braydon Johnson to step up and do more. Four reserve receivers might be transferring out, but 6-5 LSU transfer Dee Anderson is on his way in
