Oklahoma State lands commitment from 2025 4-star small forward

Head coach Steve Lutz brought in a big time recruit for Oklahoma State for the 2025-2026 season.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys are coming off a 12-20 season a year ago, leading to the firing of Mike Boynton and subsequent hiring of Steve Lutz, who is looking to add to his roster for upcoming seasons.

The Cowboys made a splash with a big recruit as 2025 forward Ryan Crotty committed to the program on Friday.

The 6’5, 180lbs small forward out of Charlottesville is a four-star recruit who was getting a ton of interest from other programs, choosing the Cowboys over Clemson, Virginia Tech, Miami, and Butler.

Crotty officially visited Stillwater in August, then seven days later committed to the program. He was slated to visit Miami and Virginia Tech later this month and Clemson in October.

The sharpshooting wing averaged 18.5 points per game and 5.3 rebounds during his junior season at Miller School in Virginia. He played on the Nike EYBL circuit this summer and scored just shy of 13 points per game. He went one game at Peach Jam where he was a perfect 12 for 12 from the free throw line.

Oklahoma State is going to have an entirely new look with 10 new scholarships for the 2024-2025 season. The Cowboys have seven players listed as seniors, which will open up spots for others to join Crotty in Stillwater in 2025.

With this commitment, Oklahoma State is ranked 25th in the country for the 2025 class, which comes in second in the incredibly basketball-rich Big 12 conference.

A former Texas A&M Basketball recruiting target has entered the transfer portal

Former 2023 4-star forward Eric Dailey, a Buzz Williams recruiting target, has entered the transfer portal

Texas A&M’s 2023-2024 basketball season came to a disappointing end last Sunday night at the hands of the No. 1-seed Houston Cougars in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, as senior forward Andersson Garcia’s game-tying 3-pointer to send the game into overtime wasn’t enough to pull off the upset.

Overall, head coach Buzz Williams deserves a ton of credit for helping turn things around during the Aggies’ late-season run. This included a five-game winning streak led by the elite guard play of Wade Taylor IV, Tyrece Radford, and rising star Manny Obaseki.

However, with Radford set to depart the program, Williams’s in-house option to replace his down-hill driving production should be Obaseki. However, providing veteran help through the transfer portal is a more realistic option to prevent hindering the incoming senior’s development next season.

Outside of the guard postion, Williams is also in need of adding another wing/forward; with Andersson Garcia’s return for a final season still in flux, another former 4-star prospect has entered the portal, as Oklahoma State forward Eric Dailey spent just one season in Stillwater.

Out of the prestigious IMG Academy, Dailey was one of the Cowboys’ better players this season. He averaged nearly 10 points per game while shooting 50% from the field, and his rebounding numbers should improve down the line.

Previous recruiting relationships are key to landing players through the portal, and in order to continue the momentum into the 2024-2025 campaign, Buzz Williams will need to execute this offseason.

Oklahoma State loses to Texas, will clearly finish below USC on NCAA seed list

Oklahoma State is yet another bubble team which lost and will finish below USC. Thank you, @LonghornsWire!

The bubble keeps spitting out results which will help USC and reduce the Trojans’ headaches after their Pac-12 Tournament loss to Arizona State.

Michigan lost on Thursday. North Carolina lost on Thursday. So did Oklahoma State. The Cowboys, with a large number of losses and an overall record barely above .500, needed a quality win over Texas to make their case. OSU was right near the cut line as a “last team in” or “first team out.” When a bubble team occupies that position entering a tournament quarterfinal game three days before Selection Sunday, it is essentially a must-win game, since other bubble teams are bound to win a few games and play their way in.

Well, Oklahoma State lost … and it wasn’t even close, either.

Texas manhandled the Pokes, 61-47, in a game which was never particularly close. This is another easy decision for the selection committee, and another example of a team which will unquestionably finish below USC on any possible seed list.

A few teams (Penn State, Clemson, Arizona State, Utah State) are playing their way into the field, but more teams are playing their way out.

We mentioned Michigan, North Carolina, and Oklahoma State. Remember that Wisconsin also played its way out of the field. Nevada has as well. New Mexico is out, too. Just a few more teams need to lose, and USC’s spot will be secure.

Examining the remaining Big 12 tournament field for Texas

Here’s a look at what teams are left in the Big 12 Tournament after Thursday.

The Texas Longhorns (24-8) are moving on to the Big 12 semifinals. On Thursday night, the Longhorns defeated the Oklahoma State Cowboys (18-15) in a dominant 60-47 win.

For Oklahoma State, it means they might need help to make it into the NCAA Tournament field. Texas had no conscience in regard to helping out the bubble team as it has championship aspirations that tournament seeding could aid.

Earlier in the day, Iowa State shocked Baylor 78-72. The Cyclones were able to hold on after bullying the Bears for much of the second half. It’s unclear whether or not the loss hurts Baylor all that much in its bid for a No. 2 seed. Even so, Baylor head coach Scott Drew’s team is not playing well heading into the NCAA Tournament.

Here’s a look at what teams are left in the Big 12 Tournament field.

Bracket Update: Texas’ seeding and other notable rankings

We look at notable bracket rankings in Joe Lunardi’s bracket update.

March Madness commences for Texas as it begins its bid for a Final Four berth in Houston. As it stands now, the team will have solid positioning in the field.

ESPN bracket expert Joe Lunardi has the Texas Longhorns (23-8) as a No. 2 seed slotted against Vermont as its No. 15 seed opponent. Vermont has made the tournament eight times since 2003, including last season.

The highly competitive Big 12 conference could have something to say about Texas’ tournament seed on Thursday, as the Longhorns face the Oklahoma State Cowboys (18-14) whose tournament fate is not yet certain.

Elsewhere in the Big 12 Tournament, Oklahoma and Texas Tech were sent home in Round 1. Their losses effectively end their seasons, with both out of contention for an NCAA Tournament bid.

Let’s take a look at some of the notable bracket rankings in Joe Lunardi’s bracket update.

Kansas beats Texas Tech, improves USC’s bubble position even more

Kansas created a situation which should keep at least one bubble team out of the NCAA Tournament, possibly two. We have details.

The Big 12 bubble landscape is becoming more favorable for USC as the calendar moves into March.

Texas Tech, which lost last Saturday to TCU, lost again to Kansas on Tuesday night. USC is gaining a little more separation from Texas Tech on the bubble, but there’s more to the story than a simple comparison of the Trojans and the Red Raiders.

The Big 12 and Big Ten have cluttered bubble situations with multiple bubble teams in play. In addition to Texas Tech losing consecutive games over the past few days, Oklahoma State has done the same thing. Those two teams are both in big trouble for an at-large berth. They are moving in the wrong direction.

Notable is the fact that Oklahoma State and Texas Tech play each other this Saturday. Had the Cowboys and Red Raiders both won their most recent games, this upcoming contest would be a “winner in” bubble game in which the loser is still in the hunt for the NCAA Tournament. However, because of the recent losses by both teams, this game will be more of a “loser out” bubble game in which the loser will have to win the Big 12 Tournament just to make the NCAA Tournament.

If Oklahoma State beats Tech on the road, the Cowboys’ NCAA odds probably will rise above 50-50. If Tech beats Oklahoma State, the Red Raiders and Cowboys would both be near the cut line and would need at least one win at the Big 12 Tournament to feel moderately good about their position.

Ultimately, it’s very unlikely that both teams can get into the NCAA Tournament, which is great for USC. That’s at least one bubble spot the Big 12 won’t claim. The hope for USC is that both Texas Tech and Oklahoma State will miss the field. A Tech win on Saturday, followed by losses for both teams in the first game of the Big 12 Tournament, could bring about that result.

PREVIEW: Texas vs Oklahoma State by the numbers

Texas faces an Oklahoma State team that has found its identity.

The Texas Longhorns face the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Tuesday night. On the surface, the game presents an opportunity for Texas to catch its breath. That might not be the case.

The Cowboys are playing better basketball of late as evidenced by their last two performances. Last week saw the Pokes defeat Iowa State and Oklahoma at home.

Iowa State is responsible for Texas’ third loss of the season after a dominant home win over the Longhorns. That the Cowboys could defeat a team of that caliber speaks to how seriously Rodney Terry’s team must take its next opponent.

Texas enters the game 5-2 in conference play in pole position at No. 2 behind Kansas State at 6-1. In a wide open conference, Tuesday night presents an opportunity to stay in the Big 12 regular season title race.

Here’s a look at how the teams match up.

Breaking down Texas basketball’s 56-46 win over Oklahoma State

Texas improved to 13-2 on the season and 2-1 in conference play.

Texas won a low scoring game against Oklahoma State on Saturday. Depending on who you ask, the performance was either ugly or gritty. Given Texas’ past struggles against Oklahoma State, it’s fair to simply accept the win and move forward.

The Longhorns are far from a finished product. The burnt orange faithful have seen it all since a narrow overtime win over Rice.

Kansas State unearthed defensive flaws in its 116-103 win over Texas that Rodney Terry worked to eliminate. The Horns then held Oklahoma State to 46 points.

It was an ugly offensive performance. Texas guards made only 6 of 27 shot attempts in the team’s 31% shooting night. In reality, it was fair to expect the offense to regress following its 103-point scoring performance on Tuesday. Texas guards shot 25-for-45 against the Wildcats.

More important than style points, Texas earned a double-digit conference win in Stillwater. The team will face crucial games against against TCU and Texas Tech in its next two games.

Texas improved to 13-2 on the season and 2-1 in conference play.

What the next three games will reveal about Texas basketball

Texas basketball must avoid a letdown early in conference play.

The Texas Longhorns are 12-1 following a huge road win over the Oklahoma Sooners. After navigating a tough nonconference schedule the team is about to face a new test altogether. Continue reading “What the next three games will reveal about Texas basketball”
