Player grades: SGA scores 39 points, officiating a hot talking point in 136-132 2OT loss to Bucks

The Thunder failed to win their 2OT battle against the short-handed Bucks in a game that saw SGA get MVP chants and the referees get booed.

By the end of the second overtime, the story of the Milwaukee-Oklahoma City game no longer centered on how awesome Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is or how Jevon Carter suddenly looked like one of the best players in the world. Instead, it centered on the OKC home crowd expressing its anger by ruthlessly booing the officiating.

A hot Thunder crowd’s flair slowly sizzled out with multiple referee stoppages and culminated at the end of the game when the fans booed the officiating.

The Thunder eventually lost to the Bucks in double overtime, 136-132.

With the Bucks missing its star trio of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday, they could not simply rely on elite talent to coast through a win.

Instead, as was shown early on in the game, the Bucks relied on a physical brand of basketball. The message was sent when a Gilgeous-Alexander drive to the basket resulted in him on the ground and wincing in pain with Grayson Allen. Eventually, both players resumed playing without any problems, but the message was delivered.

Despite the Bucks missing their best players, they were not going to let a hot and young Thunder squad hand them their second loss of the season without a fight.

The ensuing result was a 58-minute long thriller between a championship contender and a rebuilding team. While it was not the result the Thunder was looking for, there were definitely encouraging signs throughout the three-plus hour long game.

The Bucks were led by Carter, who scored a career-high 36 points and 12 assists. Allen contributed with 18 points. Rookie MarJon Beauchamp scored a career-high 19 points in the win. Brook Lopez collected a 24-point and 13-rebound double-double and hit the game-tying free-throw in the first overtime on a questionable foul call.

Let’s take a look at Thunder player grades.

Thunder rookie Ousmane Dieng drops 20 points in first G League game

Dieng made his first appearance in the G League and helped the OKC Blue improve to 2-0 on the season.

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Ousmane Dieng made his first appearance in the NBA G League on Wednesday and helped the OKC Blue improve to 2-0.

Dieng produced 20 points, five rebounds, four assists, two blocks and one steal in the 124-102 win over the Santa Cruz Warriors. He went 6-of-13 from the field, including 2-of-8 from 3-point range, in 34 minutes of action in the matinee.

The Thunder also assigned second-round pick Jaylin Williams to Blue for the contest. He had seven points, nine rebounds, eight assists, four steals and one block in 30 minutes in his second appearance with the Blue.

Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault liked how they played.

I thought those guys all played really well, played the right way and competed hard. I couldn’t really tell the difference between it being a G League game and an NBA game — they brought the same thrust to it. I was impressed by the whole team, to be honest.

The contest gave the two draftees the opportunity to log some extended playing time. Dieng has been featured in the rotation more over the last week or so, while Williams has made only two appearances over the first 10 games of the season.

With the Thunder in action themselves on Wednesday, Dieng and Williams were inactive versus the Milwaukee Bucks. With the Blue sharing the same arena as the Thunder, the team has allowed players to double-dip but opted to sit Dieng and Williams.

The team will continue to monitor their minutes so they’re not overworked but Dieng and Williams figure to play with the Blue often this season. The organization has found success with their G League affiliate and Dieng and Williams figure to be the next players to benefit.

The Blue return to action on Thursday again versus the Warriors.

Rookie Wire: OKC Thunder moves up in latest NBA power rankings

The Thunder improved on its ranking from @RookieWire

Rookie Wire released its latest NBA power rankings on Monday, and writer Cody Taylor continues to put the Oklahoma City Thunder on the rise.

The Thunder, who were ranked No. 25 in the last power rankings, rose to No. 24 this week.

“After racing to a 4-3 start, the Thunder have dropped two straight. They are coming off a 108-94 loss to the Bucks, who were without Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the way with 18 points. Despite the two-game skid, the defense has been one bright spot in the early going, though. They rank seventh in the NBA in that category.”

The Thunder are 4-6 and in the midst of a three-game losing streak. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continues to play like one of the best players in league, averaging 30.8 points on 53.9% shooting.

OKC Thunder news: Ousmane Dieng, Jaylin Williams assigned to G League’s OKC Blue

The OKC Blue play their home opener on Wednesday afternoon while the Thunder play a home game against the Bucks on Wednesday night.

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced on Tuesday that they have assigned rookie forwards Ousmane Dieng and Jaylin Williams to their G League affiliate, the Oklahoma City Blue.

The Blue play their home opener on Wednesday, Nov. 9 against the Santa Cruz Warriors — the Golden State Warriors G League affiliate.

Chances are, both Dieng and Williams will play for the Blue and then be recalled to the Thunder before their home game against the Milwaukee Bucks later that day. This is a tactic the Thunder used often last season, a benefit of having both the NBA and G League teams play in the same arena.

In nine games, Dieng is averaging 3.3 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists with the Thunder. In two games, Williams is averaging three points and 3.5 rebounds with the Thunder.

PHOTOS: Best images from the Thunder’s 112-103 loss to the Pistons

Here are the best photos from the Thunder’s loss to the Pistons.

The Oklahoma City Thunder lost their third consecutive game on Monday against the Detroit Pistons, 112-103.

In a battle of rebuilding young cores, the Pistons looked more impressive as a whole but Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the best individual player on the court as he finished with 33 points and four blocks.

For the Pistons, it was a group effort to collect the comeback win against the Thunder.

Cade Cunningham finished with 21 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Jaden Ivey finished with 15 points, 11 rebound, six assists and three blocks. Saddiq Bey scored a team-high 25 points. Isaiah Stewart finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Here are the best photos from the Thunder’s loss to the Pistons.

Player grades: SGA scores 33 points, rest of Thunder starters score 29 points in 112-103 loss to Pistons

Outside of SGA, it was a rough night in Detroit for the Thunder.

The Oklahoma City Thunder had a chance to send a message to the Detroit Pistons that their young core is the better one. Instead, the only message the Thunder sent is that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander needs his teammates to step up and carry their weight.

After the Thunder led by as many as 16 points, a disastrous second half helped the Pistons defeat the Thunder, 112-103. The Pistons outscored the Thunder in the final two quarters, 64-40.

The story of the game is simple: Outside of Gilgeous-Alexander, the rest of the Thunder starters did not perform well.

Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 33 points, the other four Thunder started combined to score 29 points.

Despite Gilgeous-Alexander’s marvelous play, it took until the fourth quarter for one of his teammates to reach 10 points. Under those circumstances, it’s nearly impossible to win most games unless Gilgeous-Alexander goes nuclear.

For the Pistons, it was a well-balanced attack as six players scored in double-digits.

Let’s take a look at Thunder player grades from this nine-point loss.
