Ohio State commit Gabe Powers believes he’ll be a five-star again soon

Gabe Powers has committed to become an Ohio State Buckeye, but he still feels he has a ton to prove. He thinks a five-star bump is coming.

We recently had the opportunity to sit down and talk with four-star outside linebacker prospect and Ohio State commit, Gabe Powers. We previously broke down Powers and his likeness to former Buckeye greats like Chris Spielman and James Laurinaitis, but now we are going to dive into his feelings about being rated a four-star instead of sitting as a prestigious five.

“I was a five-star recruit at one time, the bumped me down about a couple of months ago, but why I should be a five-star recruit — my dedication to the game. I’m training six times a week on top of lifting four or five times a week. I take it very seriously not only on the field but off the field. Academically, I’m 3.8 GPA right now.”

Although no one has told Powers directly why he has fallen in the rankings, Powers feels the questions about his athleticism may be the reason.

“I’ve seen people say oh, I don’t know if he’s that fast, but they’ve never seen me run a 40,” Powers stated while discussing some of the criticisms he has heard. In response to this, Powers has started to work with famed Ohio State and Olympic track legend, Butch Reynolds. According to his coverage coach, Ryan Stewart, who has spent time at both Boise State and Ohio State, Powers now runs the forty in the 4.5s with consistency.

Another possible reason for the loss in ranking is the fact that Powers was being critiqued on his lack of size as most sights listed him in the low 220- pound range, but like with most of the criticism Powers hears, he doesn’t get upset he just sees it as an opportunity to improve. In regard to his size, Powers has changed his diet and is now safely in the 230-pound range and feels he could potentially even hit 250 pounds before football season.

The ironic part is that since gaining the additional weight, rumors are floating around that he may be best playing defensive end rather than linebacker. It has to be somewhat frustrating for someone to hear that they are too small to play linebacker and now those same people want to project you as a defensive lineman, but again Powers keeps a positive attitude.

“I’ll play any position they (Ohio State) want me to play,” Is what Power said when we were discussing the conversations surrounding his future position.

Before exiting the interview, Powers expressed to me that he feels strongly he will regain his fifth star. If so, it’ll give Ohio State. Stewart, who has worked with Kerry Coombs has seen a lot of top-level athletes first hand both at OSU and Boise, believes that Powers is one of the best he’s seen.

“I’ve been at all these different places. I was at Ohio State, Boise State, and there’s nodoby that I can say is more athletic than what I’ve seen from Gabe,” Stewart said. “There are people that are just as athletic … From Boise State it’s Doug Martin and Kyle Wilson. It’s Braxton Miller and Ryan Shazier, and Joey Bosa (from Ohio State). It’s like the top notch guys I’ve been around are just as good as him — as Gabe. Gabe is on another level … I’ve never seen a high school junior that was even close to as good.”

Sounds like a five-star athlete to me. At the least, Powers is a five-star person. We’ll keep an eye on the next update and see if Powers does indeed regain that five-star status from recruiting services. If he does, it’ll make the fourth five-star OSU has in the 2022 class.

Quinn Ewers explains why he flipped from Texas to Ohio State, why others keep leaving the state

The top prospect in the 2022 class, QB Quinn Ewers, explains why Texas products keep leaving the state for Ohio State and other programs.

When the top recruit in the class of 2022 decommitted from Texas and decided to flip his commitment to Ohio State, it sent ripples across the college football recruiting world. Not only because the Buckeyes gained yet another blue-chip prospect, but because the Texas program lost another one of its top in-state products.

And it hasn’t just been this year. Over the last several years, the state of Texas has lost a ton of high school football talent to other programs, with Ohio State being the benefactor many times. Ewers, Jeff Okudah, J.K. Dobbins, and Garrett Wilson are just some examples of highly-rated recruits that have shunned Texas for other locations in college in recent recruiting cycles.

But why? The Longhorns have one of the best pedigrees and following in the history of college football. Well, it appears as though recent shortcomings on the field have played a part. In an interview with 247Sports, Ewers pointed to that very fact as to why he changed his allegiances.

“Probably because a Texas team hasn’t been in the running for a national championship in a little while,” Ewers said. “And I don’t know about other guys, but like me I just, I just want to compete at the highest, highest level. Obviously, one day they will get back there and it’ll be great. But right now, it’s just, I’m just tired seeing that happen.”

It definitely doesn’t hurt that Ohio State has been competing at the highest level. The Buckeyes won the first-ever College Football Playoff national championship in January of 2015, and have been a part of the CFP five of the eight years since its existence.

And with the best talent from not only Texas but other states too, that doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

Five-star tackle Zach Rice sets up visit to Ohio State

According to an announcement on Twitter, 5-star 2022 offensive tackle Zach Rice has set up a date to visit the Ohio State campus.

The schedule is filling up when it comes to June visitors to the Ohio State football program. With the recruiting dead period set to lift on the first of the month, many prospects and targets are lining up to make the trek to the banks of the Olentangy.

The latest comes from five-star offensive tackle Zach Rice. According to a tweet from top prospect edit guru Hayes Fawcett, Rice has set up his official visit to Ohio State for June 4-6, and it could be a big one.

The Lynchburg, Virginia, native would fill a huge need for Ohio State in the future. He is listed at 6-foot, 6-inches, and 282-pounds and ranked as the No. one offensive tackle and fifth overall prospect in the 2022 class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. It would send ripples through the recruiting universe for the Buckeyes to make an impression and find a way to land such an amazing talent on the offensive line.

It won’t be easy though. As you can see from the graphic, Rice has also set up visits to North Carolina, Virginia, Alabama, and Notre Dame. Nobody really knows which way he is leaning right now, but we’ll keep an eye on things and see how they progress through June after all the visits have been made.

Nation’s top prospect for 2021, J.T. Tuimoloau, locks in Ohio State visit

Ohio State priority target, and five-star prospect J.T. Tuimoloau has finally been able to set up his official visit to Columbus.

Finally.

We’ve been waiting for a visit from the biggest prize in the 2021 recruiting cycle to make his official trip to Ohio State known, and it appears as though it is now locked in. According to Jeremy Birmingham of Lettermen Row, five-star defensive lineman J.T. Tuimoloau will be visiting the Buckeye program the weekend of June 18-20.

Tuimoloau has been very quiet about his recruiting process and held off committing to a program through the early and traditional signing periods. His family has been very vocal about him wanting to make visits to his final schools before making a decision. In addition to Ohio State — Alabama, Oregon, USC, and Washington are also in the mix.

OSU is considered a slight favorite right now to land the 6-foot, 4-inch, 277-pounder, but it is a tenuous one at best because of how little information is available. According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Tuimoloau is rated as the No. 2 defensive lineman and third overall prospect in the entire class. 247Sports own ranking system has him as the top prospect overall.

Needless to say, it would be a huge get for Ohio State to lure one of the most talented kids in the class to campus to play under Larry Johnson.

We’ll obviously keep an eye on this huge, impactful visit of the lone remaining priority target still out there for the 2021 class to see how things go. For now though, one of the most watched recruiting stories in recent years appears to be rounding the corner towards the home stretch.

Ohio State football recruiting: All of the June visits scheduled

The college football recruiting dead period is about to lift. Ohio State has a slew of visits scheduled for June we are tracking.

The NCAA has set a date to lift its recruiting dead period and it’s going to open up the flood gates for Ohio State and other college football programs when it comes to prospect visits. It all gets going in June, and there are slew of Buckeye targets and commits already on the calendar to come and visit Ryan Day and staff on the banks of the Olentangy.

For most, it’ll be the first time on campus, and a chance for Ohio State to make an impression and get some forward momentum going again for the 2022 recruiting class.

It’s so many that we decided to put together a list of visits that we know about. It’s going to be a furious pace likely like none other we’ve seen since it’ll be the first time college coaches can have in-person contact on campus in over a year. You can thank the COVID-19 pandemic for that.

We’ll add to this as we know more, but here’s where things stand so far with a little help from 247Sports.

ESPN lists top recruits regardless of class: How many may enroll at Ohio State?

We break down the most likely future Ohio State Buckeyes on ESPN’s recent top 25 recruiting list regardless of class.

A few days ago ESPN released an article ranking the top 25 college football recruits regardless of class and we wanted to figure out how many are seriously considering becoming an Ohio State Buckeye. Recruiting rankings are fluid and differ a great deal between sites and this was the case even before COVID-19, which has complicated recruiting even further.

It is also important to remember that not only do the rankings change, but the decisions and standings of these high school athletes change as well. Teenagers often change their mind and that is no different when choosing a college. Below are a few of the prospects from the list that are considering Ohio State.

Ohio State hoping to add another highly rated wide receiver that was considered a Michigan lean

Once thought to be a Michigan lean, Ohio State is gaining ground for the No. 6 ranked receiver in the nation, Kaleb Brown.

With so much talent in the cupboard at the wide receiver position, does Ohio State really need another top-tier wideout? The short answer is yes. And Kaleb Brown, once thought to be a Michigan lean, might be the next one Brian Hartline lures to Columbus.

Brown hails from Chicago and is the No. 6 rated receiver in the 2022 class according to 247 Sports composite rankings. The Buckeyes already have commitments from the No. 4 and No. 19 ranked 2022 pass catchers in Caleb Burton and Kyion Grayes.

With recent transfers of Mookie Cooper and Jameson Williams, it opens up the door to add more talent. College football is a revolving door with graduation, players leaving early for the NFL, and now more than ever before with the transfer portal.

Picking up a player of Brown’s caliber would add to an already great receiving class. Just check out his one-handed snag from Michigan recruit J.J. McCarthy.

Speaking of Michigan, Ohio State has been picking up steam with Brown’s recruitment. There have been several crystal ball picks that have swung in the Buckeye’s favor.

In a rivalry that lasts 365 days a year, a commitment from Brown would be another dagger in the heart for TTUN. As an Ohio State fan, what could be better?

High four-star 2022 hoops prospect schedules visit to Ohio State

High four-star 2022 power forward Kyle Filipowski has set an official visit to Ohio State, among other schools.

Recruiting never stops at a place such as Ohio State. Not in football and not in college hoops either. The Buckeyes are trying to get some news on their final roster for the 2021-2022 season, but they are also pruning the prospect tree for the 2022 class.

On that note, high four-star 2022 power forward Kyle Filipowski has scheduled a visit to Ohio State for June 12 and 13, according to Stock Risers. Remember, we could see a bushel of visits coming up as the NCAA will allow in-person visits again beginning on June 1.

According to the 247Sports composite rankings, Filipowski is ranked a high four-star as the No. 10 power forward and 57th overall prospect in the class. He is out of Wilbraham, Massachusetts. At 6 feet, 11 inches, Filipowski would add needed size to OSU’s lineup, but don’t be fooled. He has a versatile game that can move out on the perimeter as well.

There is no clear leader to land Filipowski’s services at this point, but he does have official visits set up with Iowa, Syracuse, Duke and Indiana.

Ohio State in the running for a former five-star USC linebacker in the portal

Palaie Gaoteote was recruited by Ohio State in high school but chose USC. Could he make his way back to Columbus via the transfer portal?

Ohio State is pursuing another transfer portal player looking to make a move. After missing out on Henry To’o To’o, the Buckeyes have turned their attention to the West Coast.

Former five-star linebacker, Palaie Gaoteote has spent the last three years at USC but has spent much of his time on the sidelines due to injuries. Gaoteote has 14 career starts but was only able to play in two games last season after sustaining a concussion. In his three years as a Trojan, the middle linebacker has racked up 105 tackles, including two sacks.

When Gaoteote first entered the transfer portal, it was thought to be a lock that he landed in Texas. Now it seems that OSU is starting to gain some traction.

One key piece in Gaoteote’s recruitment might lie is within the defensive line. Gaoteote played his high school football at Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas, the same high school as Buckeye defensive tackle, Haskell Garrett — and also famously former quarterback Tate Martell, but we digress.

Should Gaoteote choose to come to Columbus, it would add depth to a thin unit. Gaoteote would be competing with Dallas Gant for playing time at middle linebacker unless the coaching staff decides to shuffle things around among the group.
