Next up a quarterback for Ohio State: Part 3: The conclusion

How it could play out in about 8 months #GoBucks

We are finally here, the last of a three-part series looking at which candidate, [autotag]Kyle McCord[/autotag] or [autotag]Devin Brown[/autotag], has the leg up in the race to be [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag]’s quarterback in 2023.

I will reiterate I don’t believe this contest will be called early. Given the fairly easy early schedule ([autotag]Indiana[/autotag],  [autotag]Youngstown State[/autotag] and [autotag]Western Kentucky[/autotag]), this battle potentially could go into the season. If it does, [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] needs to make a choice before traveling to South Bend.

Part 1 of this series focused on McCord. The second focused on Brown. Now we will put that information together and handicap the race. My final takes on each of them and a prediction prior to spring practices and fall camp of what we will see in 2023 for Ohio State at quarterback.

What’s the best rivalry in college football? Many would say Ohio State vs. Michigan. That matchup will take place this weekend in Ann Arbor, with the No. 13 Wolverines trying to break a streak of seven straight wins for the No. 1 Buckeyes. The outcome could change the landscape of the College Football Playoff.

Since a 28-21 loss to Penn State on the road Oct. 19, Michigan’s offense has turned it up. The team is averaging 41.5 points and 422.8 total yards of offense over the past four games. This is the best quarterback Shea Patterson has played during his tenure at Michigan. Over the past two games, he is 41-for-58 for 750 yards, nine touchdowns, and one interception. In a 39-14 win over Indiana, his late interception was his first turnover in 17 quarters.

The Wolverines offense may be playing its best this season, but it hasn’t dealt with a juggernaut that is the Buckeyes defense. It ranks No. 1 in the nation in efficiency and scoring, allowing just 10.5 points per game. Michigan needs to be ready for defensive end Chase Young, who leads the NCAA with 16.5 sacks. He’s leading that category despite missing two games due to an NCAA violation.

Ohio State had a sloppy 28-17 win against Penn State last weekend, which was easily its least impressive victory of the season. However, Ohio State still locked up the Big Ten East and will play in the Big Ten Championship game. The Buckeyes were up 21-0 at the beginning of the third quarter, but three straight turnovers allowed the score to quickly flip to 21-17. While the focus has been on the play of quarterback Justin Fields the entire season, he had three turnovers in the game. Fields finished the game with 188 yards passing and two touchdowns. The most success the Buckeyes found last weekend was in the run game. J.K. Dobbins ran for 157 yards, while Fields ran for 68 yards. Dobbins has 1,446 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns. His backup, Master Teague, has more rushing yards (751) than anyone on Michigan’s roster. Receivers Chris Olave, K.J. Hill, and Binjimen Victor have a combined 23 receiving touchdowns.

The Wolverines defense may not be as highly touted as the Buckeyes, but it still cannot be overlooked. Michigan’s defense has been playing well ever since an early season loss at Wisconsin. It’s currently the nation’s No. 5 defense, but the defensive tackles will have to limit the run and allow the linebackers to make plays.
