The day after: Lasting thoughts on Ohio State football’s win over Purdue

What still sticks out in your head Buckeye fans? #GoBucks

It wasn’t the biggest win in [autotag]Ohio State footbal[/autotag]l history, but it’s win on the road against Purdue did carry some significance.

It somewhat exorcized some West Lafayette demons, kept the Buckeyes undefeated and was a great tune up ahead of their tilt at home against Penn State. Both major pregame shows will be in attendance, so you know it’s a big game.

We wait six days every week for Buckeye football to return on Saturday during the season, so there is always plenty of time to think about what transpired the previous game. Here are my day after thoughts following Ohio State football’s impressive road 41-7 win against Purdue.

Ohio State football program receives perfect Academic Progress Rate score

The academic performance within the Ohio State athletic programs isn’t talked about enough. #GoBucks

The NCAA released the latest Academic Progress Rate scores on Tuesday and 15 Ohio State athletic programs received a perfect score of 1,000 (subscription may be required). The Ohio State football program was among the fifteen for the 2020-2021 academic year that also included baseball, women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s fencing, men’s golf, men’s gymnastics, men’s soccer, wrestling, women’s golf, women’s swimming, women’s track, women’s volleyball, and rifle.

The APR measures academic eligibility, retention, and graduation rates by tracking every student-athlete’s progress. It is separate from a grade point average, but instead is designed to measure the program as a whole for academic results.

Across all programs at Ohio State, the overall score was 992, the second-best ever behind a combined 995 score in 2019-2020.

“The current data shows not only that academics continued to be a priority under pandemic conditions for students, coaches, and support staff, but also that a focus on academic success has been a core value over time at Ohio State,” said Dr. John Davidson, OSU’s faculty athletics representative in a statement released by the school.

Even more evidence of the commitment to academics, the football program’s multi-year score of 991 (taken from 2017 through 2021) is third in the Big Ten behind just Northwestern (995) and Wisconsin (992) and is tied for ninth nationally.

But you won’t hear that from Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman.

Wisconsin steep underdogs to win the Big Ten according to BetMGM

The Badgers have some intriguing value to win the Big Ten

With a reinstated season comes renewed betting lines, and Wisconsin may have some serious value according to odds courtesy of BetMGM Sportsbook.

The extremely heavy favorite, to nobody’s surprise, comes out of the Big Ten East. Ohio State is at -250 to win the conference, meaning a $25 dollar bet would only net ten dollars in profit if the Buckeyes do in fact win the conference.

The Badgers are tied for third-best odds, but present some serious value as the top team in the Big Ten West. Wisconsin is at +900 to take the conference title, with Iowa and Minnesota tied at +2500 being the next best odds for any Big Ten West team.

If Wisconsin makes it to the Big Ten championship game, which they are odds on favorites to do, a +900 number is extremely solid value in a one game Big Ten championship scenario. Will it be the Badgers and the Buckeyes meeting at the top during championship week? If you think it will be another Ohio State vs. Wisconsin clash, +900 is the number to hammer.
