Broncos roster series: No. 81, WR Devaughn Vele

Broncos rookie Devaughn Vele took an unconventional route to the NFL.

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at rookie wide receiver Devaughn Vele, No. 81.

Before the Broncos: Vele took an unconventional route before beginning his college football career at the University of Utah. After high school, Vele served a two-year mission for the LDS Church in Samoa before walking on as a wide receiver with the Utes. All his hard work paid off: Vele spent 2019-23 with Utah, catching 123 passes for 1,689 yards and nine touchdowns in 47 games.

Broncos tenure: Vele (6-4, 205 pounds) was selected by the Broncos in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL draft (235th overall) and he recently signed a four-year contract. He’s entering the league as a 26-year-old rookie.

Chances to make the 53-man roster: Toss up. Vele joins former Pac-12 rivals and fellow rookies Bo Nix and Troy Franklin (both formerly of the University of Oregon) on the Broncos’ roster for training camp. Vele’s height and jump-ball abilities may be a huge compliment to veteran receiver Courtland Sutton, but Denver has a crowded WR room. If he doesn’t end up on the active roster, Vele would be a top candidate for the practice squad.

Broncos roster series: No. 79, OT Matt Peart

Broncos 27-year-old lineman Matt Peart is likely competing for a backup tackle/guard role this summer.

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at fifth-year offensive tackle Matt Peart, No. 79.

Before the Broncos: Peart (6-7, 315 pounds) first made a name for himself at UConn in college, where he played from 2015-19, starting 48 games. As a result of his outstanding work on the line, he was drafted in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft by the New York Giants. Peart dressed for 43 games in the NFC East, getting seven starts in his four years with the Giants.

Broncos tenure: After playing out his rookie contract with the Giants, Peart was signed by the Broncos this offseason to a one-year contract.

Chances to make the 53-man roster: Toss up. Peart’s time with the Giants may not have been the most eye-popping, but there is a talent here. Peart may be looking at time as a swing guard/tackle in 2024. There are some injury concerns, however, as Peart missed most of 2022 with an ACL tear. He’ll get a chance to compete for a spot this summer.

Broncos sign 12 players to reserve/future contract

The Broncos signed 12 players to reserve/future contracts on Monday. They will officially join the 90-man offseason roster in March.

Following the conclusion of their 2023 season, the Denver Broncos have signed 12 players to reserve/future contracts.

Perhaps the most notable signing is that of quarterback Ben DiNucci, who spent all of the 2023 season on the practice squad and was elevated to Denver’s game-day roster three times.

With Russell Wilson expected to be released in March, DiNucci and Jarrett Stidham will be left as the Broncos’ two quarterbacks going into 2024. Denver will likely add at least one more QB, either through free agency or the draft (or both) this spring.

Players who were not on an active roster at the end of the season are eligible to sign reserve/future contracts (every player on the practice squad is eligible, for example). These players will officially join the 90-man offseason roster when the NFL’s new league year begins on March 13.

Here’s a look at the 12 players the Broncos have signed to future deals.

Colts’ 90-man offseason roster entering July

Here’s an updated look at the Colts’ 90-man roster entering the month of July.

The Indianapolis Colts are in the middle of summer break and will be returning to the Grand Park Sports Complex in Westfield for training camp at the end of the month.

The 90-man offseason roster underwent some significant changes during the final week of June. The team parted ways with projected starting cornerback Isaiah Rodgers Sr., along with depth defensive end Rashod Berry, after both players were suspended indefinitely due to violations of the league’s gambling policy.

This version also does not include rookie safety Daniel Scott, who tore his ACL during OTAs and was placed on the injured reserve list.

Here’s a look at the updated 90-man (really 89-man) roster for the Colts as the enter the month of July:

As the Denver Broncos enjoy a summer break ahead of the start of training camp next month, the 90-man offseason roster will likely remain mostly unchanged for the next few weeks barring any unexpected signings that force a cut.

Aside from new outside linebacker Frank Clark, all of the players currently on the roster have a number assigned. Fans should keep in mind that players are allowed to share numbers during the offseason if they play on different sides of the ball.

It’s also worth noting that these numbers are subject to change — some players could make changes after the 53-man roster is set in August.

Colts’ 90-man offseason roster entering June

Taking a look at the Colts’ 90-man roster entering June.

The Indianapolis Colts are entering June, the final month of offseason activity before the team breaks for summer going training camp at the end of July.

Starting off the new month Thursday, the Colts made a slight change to the roster, signing veteran defensive end Genard Avery and waiving undrafted rookie free agent Darius Hagans.

Here’s an updated look at the 90-man offseason roster entering June:

Meet the Chiefs’ complete 90-man offseason roster

The #Chiefs assembled the first iteration of their 90-man offseason roster ahead of rookie minicamp.

The Kansas City Chiefs have assembled the first iteration of their 90-man offseason roster. With the additions of a few undrafted free agents, the team has now hit the 90-player limit ahead of rookie minicamp. It’s the first time they’ve hit the 90-player limit this offseason, but this likely won’t be the final iteration of the roster.

If the team makes any new additions from this point forward, there will have to be a corresponding release from the team in order to make room. Brett Veach and his staff will continue tweaking the roster as the team’s needs as they grow and evolve. We could even see a few tryout players make the roster after minicamp concludes this weekend.

Here’s a quick look at the full 90-man offseason roster in its first iteration:

Colts’ 90-man offseason roster by jersey number

Here’s the Colts’ 90-man offseason roster ordered by jersey number.

The Indianapolis Colts are officially set to begin organized team activities (OTAs) on Tuesday, which will be the first time this offseason the entire team gets together for workouts.

Essentially, the Colts will have three sets of OTA sessions—May 24-26, June 1-3 and June 13-16. They also will have a minicamp set for June 7-9.

OTAs don’t allow the Colts to wear pads, but this is considered Phase III of the offseason workout program. That means they can begin running drills against each other in 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 formats.

It should be noted that there isn’t a number yet for veteran offensive tackle Dennis Kelly, and quarterback Nick Foles is expected to sign as early as this week.

Here’s a look at the Colts’ 90-man roster by jersey number entering OTAs:

Broncos sign 2 more minicamp tryout players

In addition to CB Blessuan Austin, the Broncos also signed WR Trey Quinn and CB Donnie Lewis this week.

Cornerback Blessuan Austin wasn’t the only player who turned a Denver Broncos minicamp tryout into a contract this week.

In addition to signing Austin on Wednesday, the Broncos also signed wide receiver/returner Trey Quinn and cornerback Donnie Lewis. KOA Radio’s Benjamin Allbright first reported the Quinn signing and KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis broke the news of the Lewis signing.

Austin, Quinn and Lewis were among seven players who tried out for the team this week. The four others — WR Keelan Doss, WR Juwan Green, TE Caleb Wilson and RB Artavis Pierce — remain free agents.

Quinn (6-0, 200 pounds) entered the league as a seventh-round pick out of SMU in 2018. Spending time with three teams, he’s caught 35 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns in the NFL.

Lewis (6-0, 190 pounds) was also seventh-round pick out of Tulane in 2019. He’s spent time with two different teams since then but is yet to appear in a regular season game.

In addition to those three signings, the Broncos also agreed to terms on a one-year contract with running back Melvin Gordon on Tuesday. That leaves Denver with 19 open roster spots entering the NFL draft. If the Broncos don’t make any trades and use their nine draft picks, the team would then have room to sign 10 undrafted free agents next week.

Broncos trying out 7 players at voluntary minicamp

Among the players trying out for the Broncos this week: CB Bless Austin, who has started 17 games in three seasons.

The Denver Broncos kicked off their voluntary minicamp on Monday with new jersey numbers — and some new faces.

The Broncos invited seven players to camp this week on a tryout basis, according to Ryan O’Halloran of The Denver Post. Here’s a quick glance at the players:

  • WR Keelan Doss (6-3, 215 pounds) entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of UC Davis in 2019. He’s spent time with four different teams and has 11 career receptions for 133 yards.
  • WR Juwan Green (6-0, 187 pounds) went undrafted out of Albany in 2020 and he’s spent time with two teams since then but is yet to appear in a regular season game.
  • WR Trey Quinn (6-0, 200 pounds) entered the league as a seventh-round pick out of SMU in 2018. Spending time with three teams, he’s caught 35 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns in the NFL.
  • TE Caleb Wilson (6-4, 240 pounds) is a former seventh-round pick out of UCLA who’s been with four different teams, but he’s yet to catch a pass in a regular season game.
  • RB Artavis Pierce (5-11, 208 pounds) went undrafted out of Oregon State in 2020 before stints with two different teams. He’s rushed for 34 yards and one touchdown in the NFL.
  • CB Bless Austin (6-1, 198 pounds) is a former sixth-round pick out of Rutgers who played for the New York Jets and then with Seattle Seahawks, totaling 98 tackles and eight pass breakups in three seasons.
  • CB Donnie Lewis (6-0, 190 pounds) was a seventh-round pick out of Tulane in 2019. He’s spent time with two different teams since then but is yet to appear in a regular season game.

The Broncos can carry 90 players on their roster in the offseason and they have 23 open spots going into this week’s draft.
