Report: Giants’ chances of landing Odell Beckham Jr. are slim to none

Although the New York Giants are open to signing Odell Beckham Jr., their chances of actually accomplishing that are reportedly slim to none.

The dalliance between free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and the New York Giants is still alive and well.

Beckham was at the NFL league meetings in Arizona this week shopping around for his next team. One of them, reportedly, is the Giants, who are seeking to add a dynamic wideout to their growing arsenal.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll texted with Beckham “once or twice” this offseason and added that “those conversations are private.”

Co-owner John Mara said the Giants haven’t ‘closed the door’ on the idea of bringing Beckham back and was open to the idea if general manager Joe Schoen and Daboll could ‘make it work.’

But ESPN Giants beat reporter Jordan Raanan believes Big Blue and Beckham just aren’t a fit at this point in time.

The Giants haven’t been willing to pay Beckham anywhere near what he’s asking or will command. Their chances of landing him are slim to none, according to one source with knowledge of the situation. Trading for Arizona’s DeAndre Hopkins also is unlikely.

The draft is a far more likely solution because that is a more economical and long-term solution at the position. Daboll and Schoen have been traveling the country eating expensive steaks and assessing the wide receiver landscape, most recently dining with TCU’s Quentin Johnston and attending his Pro Day.

New York’s next big move is much more likely to be inking defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence to a long-term extension than signing Beckham.

The need for Beckham has swindled by the day. The Giants have actually been going another route. Schoen has already stated that he does believe that a team necessarily needs a “No. 1” wide receiver to succeed.

Schoen has been adding to his wide receiver room practically every other day with the re-signing of Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton, the trade for tight end Darren Waller and the free agent signings of Parris Campbell, Jeff Smith, and Jamison Crowder.

Giants’ John Mara ‘in favor’ of signing Odell Beckham Jr.

New York Giants owner John Mara says he’s “in favor” of signing WR Odell Beckham Jr. if Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll can make it work.

New York Giants co-owner John Mara told reporters on Monday that he was in favor of the team signing former star wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr.

Speaking at the NFL owners’ meetings in Phoenix, Mara said the team hasn’t closed the door on the idea of bringing Beckham back if general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll can “make it work.”

“We certainly haven’t closed that door,” Mara said, via the New York Post. “That’s going to be up to Joe and Dabes.

“I certainly would be in favor of that if they can make it work. That’s always the trick.”

Mara also spoke about the status of another star — running back Saquon Barkley — who Mara wants to finish his career with Big Blue.

Barkley is currently set to play this season under the franchise designation but has not yet signed his tag.

The Giants and Barkley continue to negotiate a long-term contract but are quite a distance apart and all previous offers have been pulled.

Odell Beckham Jr. to Saquon Barkley: Tell Joe Schoen to call my agent

Odell Beckham tweeted Saquon Barkley on Thursday, telling him to have New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen call his agent.

Despite adding several pieces at the position in recent days, the New York Giants do not appear finished addressing their needs at wide receiver.

One connection that just won’t fade is that of former first-round pick, Odell Beckham Jr. The Giants met with OBJ last year, contacted his agent at the NFL combine, and then later attended his public workout in Arizona.

Although some suggestions have been made that the Giants are out of the Beckham hunt, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reported otherwise on Thursday evening.

“Hey Giants fans, guess what? They’re still in the mix for Odell Beckham,” Leonard said.

Beckham himself added a little more fuel to the fire shortly after that report, tweeting at running back Saquon Barkley and telling him to have Giants general manager Joe Schoen call his agent.

Beckham followed that tweet 30 minutes later implying that one team — not necessarily the Giants — was shortchanging him in negotiations.

Given how the wide receiver market fell short of expectations, Beckham is undoubtedly frustrated by what’s being offered. And if his last tweet was about the Giants, it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise because Schoen is out there looking for bargains. He’s refrained from making disastrous deals similar to his predecessor, Dave Gettleman, despite having more money to spend this offseason.

With several bodies added at wide receiver and a plethora of needs still remaining, it’s unlikely the Giants would drop a big-money contract on Beckham but improbable doesn’t necessarily mean impossible.

Giants expected to attend Odell Beckham Jr.’s Friday workout

Odell Beckham Jr. will work out for NFL teams on Friday in Arizona, and the New York Giants are expected to send representatives.

Last season, after several injuries had thinned out their wide receiver group, the New York Giants were linked to a potential reunion with Odell Beckham Jr.

Despite getting medically cleared to return to the field in November and reportedly having multiple teams interested, Beckham remains a free agent.

On Friday, Beckham will host a workout for teams in Arizona and the Giants will be among those who attend.

Beckham has not been on the field since tearing his ACL in Super Bowl LVI just over a year ago.

The value of a potential Beckham contract is unclear, but it’s hard to imagine he would command a bigger cap hit than the several trade targets the Giants have been linked to.

Beckham had previously said he desires a long-term deal with his next team. Given his injury history and the Giants leading the league in ACL tears since 2019, it may not be considered the best match at this point.

The Giants are certainly in the market for help at the wide receiver position so it will be interesting to see if they pursue Beckham following the workout. There is at least some mutual interest in a reunion, which would make for a heck of a story.

See it: Michael B. Jordan recreates greatest catch in Giants history

Joined by Eli Manning and Shaun O’Hara, actor Michael B. Jordan attempted to recreate what is arguably the greatest catch in Giants history.

Michael B. Jordan, assuming the moniker of “MBJ,” joined retired New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning on the latest episode of “The Eli Manning Show” this week.

Jordan was given his own locker, his own uniform and was then allowed to conduct an in-house interview before taking the field. There, joined by Manning and retired center Shaun O’Hara, the trio went on to recreate the greatest catch in Giants history.

MBJ channeled his inner OBJ by attempting to mimic Odell Beckham Jr.’s miraculous one-handed catch against the Dallas Cowboys on November 23, 2014.

To Jordan’s credit, he did go up and bring down the pass but it wasn’t quite the one-handed gem Beckham made. Still, it was enough to impress Manning and O’Hara.

“I’m not gonna lie: I didn’t think you’d be able to make some of these catches,” Manning told Jordan. “But that was one take. This is all live. This is legit. And you showed up.”

The Creed actor said it was the “hardest thing” he’s ever had to do.

“This is a dream come true, to be on the field with you two, reliving and remaking these plays,” Jordan said. “I’m gonna take this with me the rest of my life.”

Odell Beckham Jr. mocks Giants for trading Kadarius Toney

Odell Beckham Jr. laughed at the New York Giants for trading WR Kadarius Toney following his record-breaking Super Bowl LVII performance.

With the New York Giants, wide receiver Kadarius Toney was largely considered a draft bust. With the Kansas City Chiefs, he’s a Super Bowl hero.

Not only did Toney catch a five-yard touchdown pass on Sunday night in a defeat of the Philadelphia Eagles, but he also set a Super Bowl record.

Early in the fourth quarter with his team nursing a slim one-point lead, Toney fielded a punt and did what he does best: broke ankles en route to a 65-yard return, which was the longest in Super Bowl history.

Immediately after Toney’s big play, another former Giants wide receiver — Odell Beckham Jr. — seemingly mocked the organization for giving up on KT.

And Toney later found it hilarious.

Toney was sent to the Chiefs in October for a pair of picks after he had worn out his welcome in East Rutherford. He wasn’t able to stay on the field due to a multitude of injuries over his first season-plus and when he did play, his production was lacking.

While Toney avoided saying anything malicious about the Giants leading up to the Super Bowl, it’s clear he felt some sort of way about being traded. And it certainly worked out for him as he’s now a Super Bowl champion.

Helping to prevent the Eagles from a title is the best thing he ever did for the Giants.

Beckham, who was also traded from the Giants in 2019, picked up his Super Bowl ring as a member of the Los Angeles Rams a season ago.

2 Giants ranked among 5 greatest catches of all-time

Sports Illustrated recently ranked the five greatest catches of all-time and two former New York Giants made the list — you can guess who.

What are the five best catches in NFL history? The answer will differ depending on who you ask.

Recently, Sports Illustrated decided to poll four former NFL wide receivers — Brandon Marshall, Larry Fitzgerald, Brandon Stokely and Danny Amendola — on their versions of the five best NFL catches ever.

Here’s the result (hint – two New York Giants are on the list).

5. Franco Harris, 1972 AFC Divisional Playoffs versus Oakland. Called the ‘Immaculate Reception,’ the catch won the game for the Steelers and is widely memorialized by the Pittsburgh fans.

4. Justin Jefferson’s grab on a 4th-and-18 versus Buffalo this past November. Jefferson leaped up and snatched the ball out of the hands of Bills defensive back Cal Lewis hands to keep the Vikings’ hopes alive

3. Odell Beckham Jr.’s one-handed leaping catch for the Giants against Dallas in 2014 on national television for a 43-yard touchdown. He was also fouled on the play by Cowboys cornerback Brandon Carr.

2. David Tyree’s helmet catch in Super Bowl XLII against New England safety Rodney Harrison that paved the way for Big Blue’s shocking upset of the undefeated Patriots.

1. Julian Edelman’s bobble-catch against Atlanta in Super Bowl LI. Edelman contorted his body while in a scrum with three Falcon defenders to make a key grab that aided in the Pats’ historic comeback victory.

This is all debatable, however. There have been scores of plays that could have been listed here.

In fact, the article mentions a few, including Mario Manningham’s sideline reception against New England in Super Bowl XLVI and the Joe Montana to Dwight Clark play that won the 1981 NFC Championship for the 49ers.

Princeton WR Andrei Iosivas on Giants’ radar

Thanks to a tip from Odell Beckham Jr.’s agent, the New York Giants are keeping eyes on Princeton wide receiver Andrei Iosivas.

The New York Giants have spent the week in Mobile, Alabama at the Senior Bowl as preparations begin for the 2023 NFL draft.

One of the team’s most-pressing needs comes at the wide receiver position. They are expected to add a few of those through free agency and the draft.

And as it turns out, the Giants had early eyes on one: Princeton wide receiver Andrei Iosivas.

While meeting with Odell Beckham Jr.’s agent back in December, general manager Joe Schoen was made aware of Iosivas. OBJ’s agent showed him a quick YouTube clip.

“I’ve known about him since early December,” Schoen told the New York Daily News. “[Odell’s agent, Zeke Sandhu] brought him up. And I thought he showed really well yesterday. He’s a big, good-looking kid. And he caught the ball well.”

Here’s a quick scouting report on Iosivas courtesy of The Draft Network:

Andrei Iosivas is an All-American track star for Princeton with a 6.71 60m and a 39-inch vertical at 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds. If you could build the ideal wideout prospect, it’d look something like Iosivas. He’s a guy who can get his in a lot of different ways.

Down the field, Iosivas uses his physicality and speed to separate and has the fluid body control to high-point the ball or release off the defender for the back shoulder ball. On his out-breaking routes, Iosivas displays an innate ability to break his routes without losing any speed, making him a matchup nightmare for corners throughout their entire phase. When Iosivas has the ball in his hands his strength and acceleration make him a threat for chunk yards after the catch and has the hip fluidity and foot speed to make defenders miss. To check the final box, Iosivas’ hands are extremely strong — he finishes through contact really well and attacks the ball in the air.

The only deficiencies I can find in his game is a little stiffness in his bend at the top of his stick and comeback routes. I’d also like to see him be a more competitive and physical blocker on the perimeter.

Many mock drafts currently have Iosivas going in Round 5 or Round 6, but some others are a bit more optimistic and have him going as high as Round 4.

Eli Manning discusses Daniel Jones, Odell Beckham Jr. and more

Giants great Eli Manning sits down with Giants Wire to discuss the Quaker Pregain contest, Daniel Jones, Odell Beckham Jr., and much more.

Retired New York Giants quarterback and two-time Super Bowl MVP, Eli Manning, is continuing his partnership with Quaker Oats. This time he is giving fans a chance to go to next year’s Super Bowl via the “Quaker Pregrain Contest.”

Back in October, Manning sat down with Giants Wire to talk about the Quaker Hunger Clock campaign. This week, he took to Twitter to give an update on the hunger clock ahead of Super Bowl Sunday.

On Tuesday, Manning again sat down with Giants Wire on behalf of Quaker to talk about the contest, Daniel Jones, Odell Beckham Jr., and more.

Giants have ‘difficult offseason decisions to make’

The New York Giants have difficult offseason decisions to make, including what to do with S Julian Love and WR Sterling Shepard.

The New York Giants are coming off a successful season in which they qualified for the postseason for the first time since 2016. First-year general manager Joe Schoen knows there is still much work to be done.

Schoen’s goal is to sustain success for the haul by building a talent-rich roster while maintaining enough financial flexibility to make moves if needed.

“This is a special team to me,” Schoen said in his presser on Monday. “It was my first year. We’d like to have all the guys back, I really would. But there’s a business side to it. There are rules that you need to operate under in terms of the salary cap.”

That being said, Schoen will have to make more difficult decisions this offseason, some of which may not be popular with fans. The Giants have 18 veterans on their current roster that will become unrestricted free agents come March, including quarterback Daniel Jones, running back Saquon Barkley, and safety Julian Love.

“We’re going to meet as a staff on Thursday,” Schoen said. “We’ve got all-star games coming up. The last couple of days have been a lot of — we did exit meetings yesterday with the entire football team, each player individually, working on calendars as we move forward the next couple weeks, so we mirror personnel calendars with the coaches. We’ll have those meetings on Thursday, and those will continue through the weekend.”

Schoen was guarded in his responses to which players he was leaning on re-signing, only stating that the salary cap would dictate many of those decisions.

“We’ve got to go through the entire roster, we have a lot of UFAs. We have guys that are good players that have contracts on the horizon. That’s all part of the planning that we’ll go through. And again, we just got to talk about how we want to divvy it up and prioritize different areas. And if we need to open up money, we won’t rule that out,” he said.

As for Love, the team’s leading tackler this season, Schoen knows his value and is aware of how much he means to the Giants, but again, made no promises.

“He’s a guy — I know he mentioned it yesterday — that we talked to in the bye week. And we weren’t able to get something done with Julian,” Schoen said. “Julian knows how we feel about him. We had a good exit interview with him yesterday. Again, as we start to get into the offseason planning, we’ll talk to the coaches. We’ll see where he fits in. And if we can get something done, that’ll be good.”

Schoen also talked about other impending free agents such as oft-injured wide receiver Sterling Shepard, calling the veteran “awesome” and “one of my favorite players here.”

Schoen even addressed Odell Beckham Jr., who he had dinner with but on the other side of the coin intimated that a No. 1 wide receiver isn’t a necessity.

“I know a number one wide receiver can be important, but there are some number one wide receivers that are home right now. You can go through this past weekend; you can go through a couple of weekends ago in the playoffs. A number one receiver doesn’t guarantee you anything,” Schoen said. “I think it’s important that we continue to build the team, and there’s multiple positions where we want to upgrade throughout the offseason. So, yeah, I’d love to have a number one wide receiver. But we’ve got to place value on everything we do, and if it makes sense, that’s something we’ll look to do.”

Ultimately, the GM added, there are some “difficult offseason decisions to make.”
