NFL Week 1 odds, betting lines: Bills solid favorite over Jets

Buffalo Bills, New York Jets oddsmakers, betting, bets, odds, Week 1.

The Bills and NFL are gearing up for Week 1 of the 2020 season. Ahead of game week, odds are out. To start the season, Buffalo welcomes the New York Jets to Orchard Park for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Sunday. In this one, the Bills are 6.5 favorites at home, according to BetMGM.

Interestingly, the home team typically is given a three-point boost in games by oddsmakers each week. Week 1 between these two AFC East rivals will see the Jets travel upstate to western New York, however, there won’t be any fans at Bills Stadium for this one due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Still, the Jets have struggled in recent seasons under head coach Adam Gase and the hot seat is certainly on if he can’t get quarterback Sam Darnold and their offense going this year. No easy task getting that started against the Bills defense, a top-three unit from 2019.

That, plus the questions surrounding Buffalo’s offense and quarterback Josh Allen, see the game slated as a low-scoring affair to start the season. The over/ under of 40 is the lowest for all Week 1 slates. Thursday Night Football’s Chiefs-Texans game is more than two touchdowns higher at 54.5.

Last year the Bills and Jets finished the regular season against one another and the Bills entered that one as 1.5-point favorites. The Jets, facing a team of mostly backups for Buffalo because their postseason seeding was locked up, won that contest late, 13-6. This year’s season opener sees the moneyline sit at Bills (-265) and Jets (+215) as well.

After opt-outs, are Bills favored over Patriots again in AFC East?

Who is the current favorite in the AFC East? The Buffalo Bills or New England Patriots?

Who is the favorite in the AFC East? Well that’s an answer that’s been up, down, and all around so far this offseason.

The debate has been between two dogs: the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots.

Tom Brady skipped town after the 2019 season and the scale all of a sudden started to even out between the two rivals (Sorry, not sorry, Jets and Dolphins). But at various points of the summer, things have tipped the way of the Bills like after Brady’s departure, but then they’ve also gone back toward the Pats’ direction, like when Cam Newton was signed.

But things are pointing back to the Bills now.

The most recent news between these two have been COVID-19 related. The NFL and NFLPA came to terms on a new collective bargaining agreement for 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. In that, players are given the opportunity to opt-out of playing next season. No team has been more stung by players deciding to not play than the Patriots.

The Bills have had two players do so, Star Lotulelei and EJ Gaines. The Patriots have had a total of eight, including some important starters and pieces, such as defensive back Patrick Chung, linebacker Dont’a Hightower and wide receiver Marquise Lee.

The decision to opt out is not an easy one. It’s also very understandable. But that doesn’t mean it won’t catch the eyes of the oddsmakers. Unless the Bills have multiple players opt-out ahead of Thursday’s deadline to do so, one would imagine sportsbooks would remain the same as they stand now.

And how things current look, the Bills are once again the AFC East favorite, according to BetOnline. At +100, the Bills have the best odds to take the title in 2020. It’d be the first time in 11 seasons a team other than the Patriots did so, and the first time in 1995 that Buffalo won it. Having said that, the Patriots are not a longshot by any means. At +160, the Pats have the second-best odds in the division.

But if you’re looking for that dark horse candidate, look at the Dolphins at +700. Or if you’re feeling very bold, the Jets at +900.

We want to say things will stay this way until the season opener in September, but with the way this offseason has gone, you never really know.

Oddsmakers: Cam Newton helps Patriots replace Bills as AFC East favorite

The Patriots are now the favorites to win the AFC East after signing Cam Newton.

[jwplayer D0T4aGUM-ThvAeFxT]

The New England Patriots sent shockwaves across the division on Sunday, and because of it, they’re now favorites to win the AFC East.

The Patriots have a new potential replacement for quarterback Tom Brady. Former Panthers QB Cam Newton signed a one-year deal with New England. He’ll compete with Jarrett Stidham to become the Pats’ starting quarterback next season.

Newton, a former MVP winner and No. 1 overall pick, will immediately become the front-runner for that job over Stidham, a 2019 fourth-round pick who has barely taken a NFL snap.

With Newton, the Patriots are now another front-runner as well, the one in the division. According to William Hill Sportsbooks, the Patriots’ odds to win the AFC moved to +115. That surpasses the Bills at +140. Previously, it was the Bills who were as high as +100 favorites to win the division.

The Bills haven’t won the AFC East since 1995, the same year the club last won a playoff game. Meanwhile the Patriots have won it the last 11-straight seasons. Per The Action Network, the Patriots’ odds at winning the Super Bowl have also jumped above Buffalo’s. Before Cam, the two sides were tied at 25-1, but New England has since moved to 20-1.

For those wondering, the Jets and Dolphins are currently tied at +750 odds to win the division.

Bills open as big favorites to start 2020 season

Buffalo Bills favorite over New York Jets at home to start 2020 NFL season.

The Buffalo Bills will start their 2020 NFL season against the New York Jets at home. The Bills are also big-time favorites in that one as well.

According to BetMGM, the Bills are near touchdown favorites in the opening line, a 6.5-point favorite.

Last season the Bills edged out the Jets 17-16 on the road to open their season. Then the two faced off again in the finale and Buffalo lost 13-6.

However, that game saw Buffalo’s backup almost pull off the win against the Jets. Many starters sat that game to prep for the playoffs.

In regard to the rest of the league on opening week, other NFL teams with bigger spreads only include the Chiefs (-9.5) vs. the Texans, the Patriots (-7.5) vs. Dolphins, the Ravens (-7.5) vs. the Browns and the 49ers (-8.5) vs. the Cardinals.

Sean McDermott has fourth-best Coach of the Year odds

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott and his odds for 2020 NFL Coach of the Year.

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott is in good standing amongst sportsbooks ahead of the 2020 NFL season.

McDermott was a finalist for the NFL’s Coach of the Year Award last season. It eventually went to Ravens coach John Harbaugh.

Looking ahead, McDermott is in the early discussion again. According to BetMGM, McDermott has the fourth-best odds among all coaches to take home the hardware next season at +1800.

The opening favorite is the Patriots’ Bill Belichick at +1000. He’ll have some big mountains to climb with in order to win the award, but with quarterback Tom Brady skipping town, any successes the Pats have next season will now be directly linked to Belichick.

Behind him is a two-way tie for second and a three-way tie for third. McDermott slides in as the lone coach at +1800.

Here’s part of BetMGM’s current odds for Coach of the Year:

Bill Belichick +1000
Mike Vrabel +1400
Mike McCarthy _1400
Kyle Shanahan +1600
Frank Reich +1600
Kliff Kingsbury +1600

Over/under for Josh Allen’s 2020 passing stats set quite high

Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen over/under for passing yards and passing touchdowns in 2020.

Coming off of a solid start to his career, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has the bar set high for him by fans and, now oddsmakers, alike.

In the third year of a quarterback’s career, they’re typically expected to be a more polished product after their first two seasons. Also factoring into that for Allen is the help the Bills got for him on offense, namely acquiring wide receiver Stefon Diggs this offseason.

In regard to the sportsbooks, they see the Bills QB having a solid Year 3.

BetMGM‘s marks for some of Allen’s over/ unders would see the signal caller have a career year in 2020. If Allen hits the over for the numbers pegged for his passing yards and passing touchdown’s, it’ll be the best year of his young career.

Currently oddsmakers have Allen’s touchdown total at 20.5. That’s right at his career-high of 20 from last season. A year ago also saw Allen hit the 3,089 mark in terms of passing yards. His over/ under there opens at 3,249.5 yards.

BetMGM handed out passing yards over/unders to the following quarterbacks: Tom Brady, Carson Wentz, Daniel Jones, Phillip Rivers, Sam Darnold, Drew Brees, Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, Dak Prescott, DeShaun Watson, Aaron Rodgers, Kyler Murray, Ben Roethlisberger, Jimmy Garoppolo, Russell Wilson, Joe Burrow, Jared Goff, Kirk Cousins, Matt Ryan, Matthew Stafford and Ryan Tannehill.

Of all those, the Allen-Jackson comparison is worth mentioning. The two have the same over/under prediction of 3,249.5 yards. It’s the lowest total handed out. But Allen and the defending MVP are among the most dual-threat quarterback types in the NFL which explains that.

But Jackson’s over/under passing TD total is a bit higher than Allen’s at 26.5. Maybe a good bet since he had 36 a year ago.

Oddsmakers: Bills’ AJ Epenesa among favorites for Rookie of Year Award

Buffalo Bills DE AJ Epenesa has strong odds to win NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award.

Many draft analysts like AJ Epenesa’s fit in the Buffalo Bills defense.

Oddsmakers apparently do too.

BetOnline released the opening odds for the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Despite not being selected until the second round of the 2020 draft, Epenesa is among the favorites to win the honor.

His 20/1 odds are tied for the fifth-best of any rookie. Epenesa shares that number with Lions cornerback Jeff Okudah, who was the third-overall pick and second-overall defender taken in the draft.

Speaking of that, the first defender taken, Redskins pass rusher Chase Young at No. 2, is the overall favorite at 5/1 odds. The only others between Young and Epenesa are three linebackers, the Cardinals’ Isaiah Simmons (8/1), the Chargers’ Kenneth Murray (14/1) and the Ravens’ Patrick Queen (14/1).

Here’s a rundown of players who landed odds to win the award:

Defensive Rookie Of The Year

Zack Moss, Jake Fromm, Gabriel Davis land Rookie of Year odds

Buffalo Bills trio of rookies given odds to win Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.

There’s a couple of players on the Buffalo Bills that were given odds to land the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award in 2020. One of which is pretty surprising.

Per BetOnline, third-round running back Zack Moss leads the Bills’ pack at 20/1 odds. That’s the eighth-best odds handed out among any player, and tied with Rams running back Cam Akers.

The best odds were given to Bengals’ No. 1 overall pick, quarterback Joe Burrow, at 5/2. The Dolphins’ new QB Tua Tagovailoa trails at 8/1 while Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire has the best odds among all running backs and the third-best overall at 9/1, in a tie with another running back, Colts rusher Jonathan Taylor.

Moss could be a good bet, but if you’re looking for a longshot, the next listed Bills player is among the longest, one would assume.

Fifth-round quarterback selection Jake Fromm appears on the list, the only player with 66/1 odds. A bit surprising considering he won’t be taking over for Josh Allen, pending injury. But there’s a similar circumstance listed. Jordan Love was picked by the Packers in Round 1 in a bit of a shock. He also won’t be starting, all things Aaron Rodgers considered. But Love still landed 33/1 odds.

In another twist, Fromm actually does edge out the final Bill listed, Gabriel Davis. The receiver has 80/1 odds. While he won’t surpass Stefon Diggs or John Brown anytime soon, one could imagine him seeing the field much more than Fromm as a rookie.

Oddsmakers: Bills betting favorite to win AFC East

The Buffalo Bills have the best betting odds to win the AFC, according to Caesar Sportsbook.

The Buffalo Bills have the best betting odds to win the AFC, according to Caesar Sportsbook. The betting organization named Buffalo +100 favorites to win the division.

New England is listed just behind Buffalo at +140. The Jets are slotting in third at this point, at +700, while the Miami Dolphins, even with their upgrades in free agency and the prospects of improving due to three first-round picks in this upcoming draft, are saddled in fourth at +1000.

Interestingly enough, the Bills do not have better odds to be crowned the AFC Champion ahead of the Patriots. Buffalo’s line is +1200, while the Patriots are listed at +900. This places the Bills with the fifth-highest odds to win the conference.

Buffalo has not won the AFC East division since 1995, while they have not won the conference since 1993.

Bills’ Josh Allen the most popular MVP bet

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen could have been a sneaky good bet to win next year’s MVP award. Could have, because people are apparently catching on.

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen could have been a sneaky good bet to win next year’s MVP award. Could have, because people are apparently catching on.

According to William Hill Sportsbook via SportsLine, Allen is currently the most popular player bet on to win the 2020 MVP with his current bet at 50/1. Allen edged out two other QBs, the Cowboys’ Dak Prescott and the Cardinals’ Kyler Murray:

Better get those bets in soon if you’re Bill-eving in Allen’s chances.

Allen led the Bills to a 10-6 record last season and toss for 3,089 yards with 20 touchdown passes and nine interceptions. Allen added another 510 yards rushing and nine scores on the ground.

And for reference, the reigning MVP is Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. In 2019, he had a 13-2 record, passing for 3,127 yards, 36 touchdown passes with six interceptions. Jackson had 1,206 rushing yards and seven scores on the ground.
