Guardians pitcher Zach Plesac made the absolute coolest barehanded play for the out at first

Plesac definitely planned to throw the ball this way.

It’s still a bit early to talk about postseason positioning, but the Guardians are definitely in a good spot just about halfway through June.

At 28-27, Cleveland isn’t blowing the competition away, but they’re within striking distance of the AL Wild Card (one game back) and just four back of the Twins in the AL Central. One extended winning streak or solid month’s stretch of games could have the Guardians sitting pretty.

For that to happen, they’ll need some of their players to come through with Herculean efforts every now and then. The latest hero was Zach Plesac, who turned a routine shallow grounder against the Athletics (+1.5) into one of the best plays we’ll see this entire MLB season.

Words don’t do it justice, so we’ll let Plesac do the “talking”:

Oh. My. Goodness.

Imagine having the wherewithal to take that shallow ball, barehand it, fade away with balance and perfectly throw the ball across the diamond for the out. Clearly, Plesac is a baseball wizard.

Oakland went on to beat the Guardians, 10-5, but at least Cleveland got a reminder that they do have heroes waiting to save the day.

You’ve never heard the National Anthem like this!

You may have thought you’d seen it all, but I can assure you, you’ve never heard the National Anthem like this.

On Sunday, the Oakland Athletics played host to the Boston Red Sox in a game that eventually fell 5-2 to the visitors. But what happened before the game even started is the real story of the day.

Instead of having a typical National Anthem singer, the Athletics had musician Caroline McCaskey play it… on a saw, with what looks to be a violin bow. Yes, like the carpentry tool. No, I am not making this up, this is 100 percent real.

Just watch, and listen, to the otherworldly experience unfold before your eyes and ears.

Is it a bit weird? Absolutely. Does it sound like the sound effect old cartoons or movies used for aliens? Sure. But honestly, it’s kind of beautiful in its own strange way.

This video then prompted me to go down a rabbit hole of other songs played on a saw and folks, I was not disappointed.

I love how it’s just a plain old saw, with the musician manipulating the pitch by moving the flexible sheet of metal being played by a violin bow. Definitely the most unique rendition of the National Anthem that I’ve ever heard!

The Athletics’ Tony Kemp was delightfully shocked by his own sensational diving catch

Catch AND reaction of the year!

Tony Kemp made one of the best catches baseball has seen this season and even he couldn’t believe it!

During Tuesday’s Oakland Athletics game against the Detroit Tigers, Kemp went full extension on this catch to help end the eighth inning and preserve the away team’s 3-0 lead. With Jeimer Candelario up to bat and a man on first base, Kemp made a huge Superman dive to catch this bullet of a line drive at second.

Not only was Kemp’s catch super human, his absolutely delighted reaction at making such an unbelievable catch makes this highlight a perfect one to watch over and over again.

No wonder Kemp couldn’t believe he did that because seriously, that was awesome! What a catch from Kemp here and what a reaction too.

¡Ya debutó! El mexicano 141 en jugar en el beisbol de la MLB

Se llama Adrián Martínez, es lanzador, nacido en Mexicali, Baja California y ya debutó con los Oakland Athletics esta tarde ante Detroit Tigers en la amplia cartelera de la MLB para el 10 de mayo.

El cachanilla se convierte así en el jugador número 141 en debutar en el beisbol de las Grandes Ligas y en el novato número 18 que lo hace para la organización de Oakland este año.

Para los Athletics, Martínez es el primer mexicano en debutar desde 2015 cuando tenían en el montículo al culichi Arnold León y para México, es el segundo jugador en debutar este 2022, pues ya el pasado 8 de abril hizo su estreno en la MLB Daniel Duarte con los Cincinnati Reds.

El debut fue muy positivo para el cachanilla que terminó las primeras tres entradas con el cero en el marcador y para la apertura de la cuarta, su ofensiva lo respaldó con dos carreras para aventajar a los Tigers 2-0 y permitirle al abridor cerrar el capítulo con el partido en la bolsa ante un débil equipo de Detroit.

How does that happen?!

The Oakland Athletics managed to snap the Yankees’ 13-game winning streak on Saturday, but third base umpire Will Little didn’t make matters easy for either team.

Little put together his best Angel Hernandez impression, which isn’t something any umpire should want.

Little’s rough day started when he called a balk on the Yankees’ Nestor Cortes Jr. — a call that usually gets made by the first base umpire when a lefty is on the mound. Little was the only umpire to see a balk, and, well, it wasn’t a balk.

It got even weirder in the third inning when Starling Marte was called safe on a steal attempt. It looked like Rougned Odor got the tag down first, but Little just didn’t see it. That same inning, Little called Marte out after he drifted too far off the bag on a hard liner into the shift.

The problem: Odor was clearly off the bag. Like, it wasn’t even close. You know it was a bad call when the Yankees broadcast reacted in disbelief.

The call went to MLB’s replay system — which remains broken — and the ruling on the field was upheld. Again, Odor was clearly off the bag. It was obvious on replay.

The whole sequence would lead to A’s manager Bob Melvin getting ejected, and you honestly can’t blame Melvin for being upset there. If umpires are missing easy calls that proceed to get upheld in replay, then what are teams supposed to do?

It was a terrible day all around for that crew, and there’s no reason to expect anything do be done about it. That’s just how MLB operates.

Warriors’ Moses Moody throws out first pitch at Oakland A’s game

After being drafted by the Warriors with the No. 14 pick in the NBA draft, Moses Moody took the mound in Oakland to throw out the first pitch for the A’s.

After being drafted by the Golden State Warriors with the No. 14 pick in the 2021 NBA draft and playing in the Las Vegas Summer League, rookie Moses Moody took his talents to the baseball diamond.

On Saturday, the Arkansas product took the mound to throw out the first pitch at the Oakland Athletics game against the New York Yankees. Donning a kelly green Oakland jersey, he fired a high strike over the plate. While his pitch didn’t skip before dropping across the plate, Moody’s throw was a bit high for the catcher.

Moody is the second member of the Warriors to recently throw out the first pitch at an A’s game. In early August, Warriors forward and Oakland native Juan Toscano-Anderson threw out the first pitch against the Texas Rangers.

Rangers pitcher Brock Holt threw a picture-perfect 31 mph eephus pitch for a strike

A beauty from Brock!

You won’t see a better eephus pitch than this one that clocked at 31 mph from Brock Holt of the Texas Rangers.

During garbage time in the eighth inning on Saturday’s game as the Rangers were being blown out by the Oakland Athletics, Holt stepped in to pitch for Texas. On his first pitch of the day, and in just his third-career MLB appearance, Holt lobbed in this beauty of an eephus pitch to Josh Harrison that found its way into the top of the zone for a strike.

From the delivery to the arc to the way Harrison watched it sail into the catcher’s glove, it was incredible from start to finish.

What a glorious pitch! Here’s an overlay of another eephus pitch that he threw in the inning at 34 mph alongside a fastball in the same at bat.

Holt even offered to let the umpires check his glove for foreign substances after his one inning of work, a hilarious moment that capped off a glorious appearance on the mound.

Bravo Holt! It doesn’t get any better than that.
