Former 5-star recruit, Georgia CB commits to Arizona State

Former five-star recruit, Georgia Bulldogs cornerback commits to Arizona State in his second trip to the transfer portal

This story was updated because an earlier version included an inaccuracy.

Former Georgia Bulldogs cornerback Nyland Green transferred to the Arizona State Sun Devils. Green, who played with the Purdue Boilermakers during the 2024 college football season, is a former five-star recruit.

Green played at Georgia from 2021-2023. He posted 13 tackles and two pass deflections during his time at UGA. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound defensive back posted career-best numbers for Purdue in 2024. Green accumulated 23 tackles, two sacks and five pass deflections for the Boilermakers. Purdue struggled mightily and finished the season 1-11.

Green joins an Arizona State team that won the Big 12 and advanced to the College Football Playoff. Green gives Arizona State more depth at cornerback as he seeks to make an impact in his final year of college eligibility.

Last offseason, Green was the No. 1 cornerback in the transfer portal, per 247Sports. However, events did not go as planned for Purdue, which allowed more than 252 passing yards per game (No. 116 in the nation).

Two former Georgia football players enter transfer portal again

Two former Georgia Bulldogs put their names in the transfer portal for the second time in their respective careers

The Purdue Boilmakers were arguably the biggest disaster in the 2024 college football season, finishing 1-11.

Today, the Purdue’s future took a hit, too. Two former Georgia Bulldogs (wide receiver C.J. Smith and cornerback Nyland Green) have put their names in the transfer portal, according to Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer from CBS Sports and 247Sports, respectively.

Green was a five-star recruit from the class of 2021. He committed to Georgia and spent three seasons there before entering the transfer portal in 2023. On Christmas Day, he committed to Purdue.

Green recorded 13 tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble in seven games with the Boilmakers, but he should get a lot of interest due to his high school pedigree.

Smith was a four-star recruit in 2022 when he signed with the Bulldogs. Smith spent two seasons in Georgia before transferring to Purdue last year.

With Purdue, Smith caught six passes for 69 yards in three games. He had more usage as a Georgia Bulldog, with six catches for 116 yards and a carry for four yards.

It’ll be interesting to see where Green and Smith end up, especially if they end up committing to the same school again. Maybe Purdue (and former Georgia receiver) De’Nylon Morrissette can join them if he enters the transfer portal. Georgia is in need of wide receivers and defensive backs.

Georgia DB Nyland Green transfers to Big Ten school

Georgia football cornerback Nyland Green, a former five-star recruit transfers to Big Ten school

Georgia Bulldogs cornerback Nyland Green is transferring to the Purdue Boilerakers. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound defensive back is part of a large number of Bulldogs in the secondary to transfer this offseason.

Green is a former five-star recruit. He’s ranked as the No. 6 player in the transfer portal and the No. 1 cornerback, per 247Sports.

Former Georgia defensive backs coach Fran Brown is the head coach at Syracuse. Brown’s departure is a big reason many of Georgia’s defensive backs have entered the transfer portal.

Green, a redshirt sophomore, played in all 13 of Georgia’s games this season. Green recorded seven tackles and a pass deflection in 2023. Green is looking to have a larger role at Purdue.

Green missed on the starting job at Georgia this year. Instead, the Dawgs elected to start sophomore Daylen Everette. Defensive back Julian Humphrey also saw significant playing time at outside cornerback before he suffered an injury and missed the last few games of the year.

Green announced his decision to transfer to Purdue via social media.

UGA football defensive back is the eighth Bulldog to enter the transfer portal

Georgia football cornerback Nyland Green has entered the NCAA transfer portal. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound defensive back is the eighth Bulldog to enter the transfer portal since it opened on Dec. 4.

Nyland Green, a redshirt sophomore, played in all 13 of Georgia’s games this season. Green recorded seven tackles and a pass deflection in 2023. His decision to enter the transfer portal should not come as a big surprise. Green lost the battle to start opposite cornerback Kamari Lassiter in 2023.

Kirby Smart provides injury update on Jalen Carter, Adonai Mitchell

Kirby Smart discusses injuries to AD Mitchell and Jalen Carter

Georgia Bulldogs head football coach Kirby Smart met with the media on Monday to discuss the Week 3 win over South Carolina and the upcoming home game versus Kent State.

Smart discussed the departure of defensive back William Poole, a sixth year senior who has played in 33 games throughout his UGA career.

“William Poole is not going to be with us for the remainder of the season,” Smart said.

“He’s dealing with a personal matter, and he’s going to focus on that and his health and well-being, so he will not be with us for the rest of the year, unfortunately.”

He also discussed the health of two big-time players: Defensive tackle Jalen Carter and wide receiver Adonai Mitchell.

Mitchell did not play in Georgia’s 48-7 win over South Carolina due to an ankle injury he suffered against Samford the week prior.

“We’re hoping to get him back this week,” Smart said. “Again, it’s one of those deals where last week we were hopeful to get him back.”

As for Carter, Smart said the superstar defensive tackle has been dealing with an ankle injury since Georgia’s Week 1 win over Oregon.

That held Carter out of the starting lineup on Saturday against the Gamecocks, though he still managed two tackles in the game on 11 snaps played.

“Jalen has been dealing with a lingering ankle issue, he really had it since the Oregon game and he’s trying to get well,” Smart said.

“We’re trying to get him healthy. Hopefully, he’ll be full-go. He was close last week but didn’t end up having to play a lot of snaps.”

Georgia has just one sack through three games this season.

Additionally, Smart said that cornerback Nyland Green is dealing with a lingering hamstring issue. Green did not play against South Carolina.

5 players to watch in Georgia football’s spring game

Georgia football is back for the April 16 spring game. Who are five players to watch in G-Day?

Georgia football is back for the April 16 spring game. Sanford Stadium will be packed with fans wearing red and black once again.

It will be the Bulldogs’ first time in front of home fans, for a game or scrimmage, since winning the national championship game against Alabama. Kirby Smart has built an exciting team for the 2022 season, but the Dawgs are currently battling a lot of injuries. Key players like Brock Bowers, Darnell Washington, Rian Davis, and more are expected to miss the scrimmage.

The game is at 1:00 p.m. EDT and will be televised on ESPN2. It will be the last open look many fans will have of the team before Georgia opens the season against Oregon on Sept. 3 in Atlanta.

Here are five players and position battles to watch in the Georgia 2022 spring football game:

Georgia football player card: DB Nyland Green

Georgia Bulldogs defensive back Nyland Green (Newton High School) will have an opportunity to earn playing time right away.

Defensive back Nyland Green (No. 1):

Class: Freshman

Height: 6-1

Weight: 185 lbs

Hometown: Convington, Georgia

High School: Newton High School

Georgia Bulldogs defensive back Nyland Green will have an opportunity to earn playing time right away. Green comes to Athens as a four-star recruit who looks to join fellow Covington, Georgia, alumnus Eric Stokes as standout Georgia Bulldogs.

The former Newton High School star was the No. 5 defensive back prospect in the class of 2021. He was ranked as the No. 69 overall player. Green played both defensive back and wide receiver in high school.

Nyland Green will compete with Kelee Ringo, Ameer Speed, Lovasea Carroll, Brandon Turnage and Jalen Kimber to be a starting outside cornerback. Georgia’s secondary lost four players to the 2021 NFL draft — one former defensive back went undrafted — and one to the NCAA transfer portal.

Overall, Georgia’s secondary is expected to be one of the weaknesses of the 2021-2022 squad. Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs return a lot of talent at safety, but Smart has acknowledged the weakness and added a few players via the NCAA transfer portal.

Green’s signing was huge for Georgia. The Dawgs had a solid defensive back class with Nyland Green, David Daniel, Kamari Lassiter and Javon Bullard. Georgia finished with the No. 4 class of 2021 nationally.

Georgia football lands commitment from 2021 4-star CB Nyland Green

Nyland Green, the No. 5 rated cornerback in the 2021 recruiting class, has committed to the University of Georgia.

Go Dawgs! Nyland Green, the No. 5 rated cornerback in the 2021 recruiting class, has committed to the University of Georgia.

The four-star recruit from Covington, Georgia, announced that he is staying home to play for the Bulldogs in a commitment event at Newton High School this morning.

A huge get for Georgia coach Kirby Smart and staff, Green has length to play at the next level at six-foot-two, 183 pounds.

Georgia junior corner Eric Stokes is also from Covington and has been doing some recruiting of his own trying to get Green to Athens. Stokes is projected as a 2021 first round pick in some NFL mock drafts, so his blueprint for success is one to follow.

Green marks the 20th commit in the Bulldogs 2021 recruiting class, which currently ranks No. 3 in the nation and No. 2 in the SEC behind Alabama, according to 247Sports.

Who are UGA’s next CB targets in the class of 2021?

The Georgia Bulldogs are looking to add another cornerback recruit in the class of 2021 after the commitment of Tony Grimes.

Five-star 2021 cornerback Tony Grimes recently committed to North Carolina Tar Heels. Grimes was Georgia’s top target at the position in the class. Georgia was considered second-best in the running for his commitment

Grimes, out of Virginia Beach, ranks as the nation’s No. 1 cornerback in the 2021 class. He is also America’s No. 7 player overall and the best player in the state of Virginia.

Now that he’s committed to UNC, where does Georgia go from here? The Bulldogs currently have a commitment from David Daniel, a four-star defensive back/athlete, but Georgia could lose both Tyson Campbell and Eric Stokes to the 2021 NFL Draft. That means Kirby Smart and Georgia will likely be looking for a pair of cornerback recruits in the class of 2021.

First of all, it starts with the class of 2020. Georgia secured a commitment and signing from five-star corner Kelee Ringo. Additionally, Jalen Kimber, a four-star cornerback from Texas, figures to be a contender to start at corner in 2021.

Kirby Smart, Dan Lanning, and the Georgia Bulldog defense will find an elite talent at cornerback. The main question is who? Nyland Green hails from Eric Stokes’ hometown of Covington, Georgia and is a four-star recruit. He’s considered the top in-state cornerback.

Kamari Lassiter put the Bulldogs in his top schools recently. He’s a three star recruit from Alabama.

De’Jahn Warren, a top 2021 community college recruit, is strongly considering UGA as well. Warren visited Athens back in December, but is favored to stay local and attend Penn State.

Lastly, Georgia is in the race for the best recruit in West Virginia in Isaiah Johnson. John is a four-star cornerback from Bluefield High School.

We’ll continue to update you throughout Georgia’s recruiting efforts. The NCAA has extended the dead period for recruiting.
