The Buffalo Bills have made a late running back addition to their roster just ahead of the start of 2023 training camp.

Darrynton Evans has signed in Buffalo a day prior to the start of camp. His agency announced that a deal had been struck with the Bills.

Evans was one of three running backs that had a workout in Orchard Park on Monday.

Evans, 25, will essentially replace Nyheim Hines on Buffalo’s roster. Over the weekend, Hines sustained an off-field knee injury during a jet ski accident which will keep him off the field for the entire 2023 season.

Evans profiles as a similar player to Hines.

In addition to his experience as a rusher, like Hines, Evans has returned kicks as well. Evans will be an immediate player to watch when the Bills begin training camp on Wednesday.

Selected in 2020, the Tennessee Titans waived Evans after just two season. Injuries hampered most of his tenure in Tennessee as he only appeared in six games over two years. The 25-year-old recorded 16 carries for 61 yards and four receptions for 38 yards.

Evans was then claimed by the Chicago Bears but spent time between their practice squad and roster in 2022. In Chicago, he averaged 4.6 yards per carry on 14 handoffs during six game appearances.

Earlier this spring, the Indianapolis Colts signed Evans. However, he was released following the 2023 NFL draft.

Evans is likely behind the likes of James Cook, Damien Harris and Latavius Murray for now. There is still a possibility he carves himself out a role by the end of training camp.

Bills work out three running backs after Nyheim Hines’ season-ending injury

#Bills work out three total running backs after Nyheim Hines injury news:

Down Nyheim Hines, the Buffalo Bills have done their due diligence on multiple running backs on Monday. According to a report, the team worked out three rushers in total.

Hines, 26, suffered a season-ending knee injury in a freak jet skiing accident over the weekend. Previously it was reported that former Tennessee Titans third-round pick Darrynton Evans was set to have a workout in Buffalo.

However, he’s not alone.

NFL insider Aaron Wilson from Click2Houston.com notes that Abram Smith and Kylin Hill also worked out for the Bills.

Smith most recently suited up for the DC Defenders of the XFL. He was named to the All-XFL team as he led the league with 791 rushing yards and averaged 5.0 yards per carry over 10 games. He added another 13 catches for 91 yards. The next-closest rusher in the XFL to Smith totaled 348 yards fewer than him.

Smith previously signed as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints in 2022. He was cut at the end of training camp that year, and then he went on to be a top draft pick in the XFL.

Hill was a seventh-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2021 and has only 11 total NFL carries in his career. His larger contributions have occurred on special teams. Hill was released by the Packers in November 2022.

Very unfortunate for the #Bills RB and return man:

Update: Bills’ Nyheim Hines to have surgery after freak accident

Previous coverage:

Buffalo Bills running back Nyheim Hines’ 2023 season is over because of what can only be described as a freak accident.

It was revealed on Monday that the 26-year-old sustained a knee injury which would end his 2023 season before it even begins. The initial report only indicated it occured “off-site” away from Bills facilities in Orchard Park.

A follow-up report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero had shed light on exactly what happened.

Hines was not working out when the injury happened. Rather, he was taking some time off before training camp gets rolling on Wednesday. Reportedly, Hines was on a jet ski and was “struck by another rider and sustained serious, but non-life threatening injuries,” per Pelissero.

Hines’ knee will require surgery. He’s likely to go under the knife this upcoming week.

Buffalo acquired Hines at the 2022 NFL trade deadline in a deal with the Indianapolis Colts. Running back Zach Moss went the other direction in the trade.

The Bills and Hines agreed to a restructured contract this offseason.

In nine games in Buffalo after the trade, Hines only had six carries and five catches. However, one catch did result in a touchdown and Hines also took two emotional kickoff returns for a score after Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest. Hines averaged 29.2 yards per return in 2023.

It was anticipated that Hines would again feature as a kick returner for the Bills in 2023. General manager Brandon Beane sparked the thought that Hines could have a bigger role going forward on offense as well during his end of season press conference in January.

Now Hines’ future in Buffalo is an uncertain one.

Bills lose Nyheim Hines for season due to Jet Ski injury

Nyheim Hines is lost to the Bills after a freak injury while on a Jet Ski

Bills running back Nyheim Hines was not bothering anyone. He was just sitting on a Jet Ski, stationary.

And then, his 2023 season went away in a blink.

Hines was hit by another Jet Ski and suffered a serious knee injury that will cost him this campaign,

The injury is not life-threatening and ESPN reported there is no damage to his liver or kidneys.

Hines was going to be a primary kick returner for the Bills in addition to some RB duties.

Ripple effect: Bills’ Nyheim Hines out for season

Looking at the fantasy football ramifications of Hines going down.

The Buffalo Bills have lost one of their running backs ahead of the 2023 campaign, with Nyheim Hines reportedly suffering what is expected to be a season-ending knee injury.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the injury occurred while Hines was off-site. It isn’t immediately clear exactly what injury Hines suffered, but it is significant. Updated reports say Hines has been lost for the year due to a torn ACL after being struck by a jet ski while he was stationary on another personal watercraft.

The Bills are already looking to add another back to their roster, with the team set to work out former Tennessee Titans third-round pick, Darrynton Evans, but he’s likely to be a camp body, at best.

Normally a PPR asset during his days with the Indianapolis Colts, Hines was nowhere to be found on offense after being traded to the Bills midseason in 2022.

The 26-year-old totaled just six carries for -3 yards and five catches for 53 yards and a score in nine games while working behind fellow backs Devin Singletary and James Cook.

Instead, he did most of his work in the return game, where he was quite effective and found paydirt twice on 19 kickoff returns (29.2 yards per).

Of course, for our purposes here, that means nothing for individual player use.

While Singletary is no longer in Buffalo, the team added Damien Harris and Latavius Murray to the running backs room via free agency this offseason, giving Hines plenty of competition for any semblance of a role on offense.

However, based on what we saw last season, Hines was looking at being no better than the team’s third running back behind Cook and Harris, and quite possibly the No. 4 if he failed to beat out Murray for the No. 3 job.

Fantasy football takeaway

Knowing that, his injury won’t have any impact on fantasy managers like it would have in years past, so there’s really nothing to see here. If anything, Murray’s chances of having a role — albeit a very small one — just increased, and Buffalo will be searching for a pass-catching reserve to cover Cook’s skill set should something happen to the former Georgia Bulldog.

Report: Bills have workout with Darrynton Evans in wake of Nyheim Hines injury

It appears the #Bills had notice about Nyheim Hines’ injury as the team already has a workout scheduled with another RB:

While outsiders have only just learned about the Nyheim Hines injury update, it appears the Buffalo Bills have known.

According to NFL Insider Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston.com via Titans Wire, on Sunday former Tennessee Titans third-round pick Darrynton Evans is having an upcoming workout with the Buffalo Bills.

On early Monday morning, reports surfaced that Hines is set to miss the entire 2023 NFL season. He reportedly sustained an off-site knee injury which will keep him off the field. That leaves the likes of James Cook, Damien Harris and Latavius Murray in Buffalo’s backfield just days ahead of training camp’s start on Wednesday.

In addition to his experience as a rusher, like Hines, Evans has returned kicks as well.

Selected in 2020, the Titans waived Evans after just two season. Injuries hampered most of his tenure in Tennessee as he only appeared in six games over two years. The 25-year-old recorded 16 carries for 61 yards and four receptions for 38 yards.

Earlier this spring, the Indianapolis Colts signed Evans. However, he was released following their 2023 NFL draft.

Bills’ Nyheim Hines sustains season-ending injury

A tough break for the #Bills backfield as Nyheim Hines’ season is over before it begins:

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8221″]

The Buffalo Bills will not have the services of Nyheim Hines in 2023.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Hines sustained an “off-site” knee injury which will keep him out the entirety of next season.

Hines, 26, was traded by the Indianapolis Colts to Buffalo at the 2022 NFL trade deadline in a deal which sent running back Zach Moss the other direction. The Bills and Hines agreed to a restructured contract this offseason as well.

In nine games in Buffalo after the trade, Hines only had six carries and five catches. However, one catch did result in a touchdown and Hines also took two emotional kickoff returns for a score after Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest. Hines averaged 29.2 yards per return in 2023.

At the end of the 2022 season, Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane noted that he would have liked to see Hines used more in the offense during the season. It was expected that Hines could have a bigger role going forward until injury struck.

Without Hines, receiver Donte Harty becomes the likeliest candidate to replace him on special teams. Harty, who signed with the Bills this offseason, earned All-Pro honors as a returner during his rooke year.

In the backfield on offense, Hines’ injury leaves the Bills with James Cook, Damien Harris and Latavius Murray. Running back Darrynton Evans has a workout scheduled in Buffalo, per Titans Wire as well.
