Utterly bizarre sequence in Georgetown-Northwestern features multiple possession changes, zero points

Okay, this was confusing.

That is a lot of work not to come away with a bucket.

In Georgetown basketball’s home matchup against Northwestern on Tuesday night, nonsense abounded on a strange run that featured multiple possession changes and no points for either team.

It’s hard to exactly describe what happened on this sequence, but both teams had clear lanes to get some sort of offensive momentum before fumbling the bag with real aplomb.

The ball isn’t always going to bounce your way, but these teams seemed allergic to scoring here. It had to be frustrating for neither team to come away from this moment but anything but scratched heads and bummed vibes.

Yikes, guys. The game of basketball can move as quickly as lava, but this moment just looked as confused on the court as it did from the couch.

There was still plenty of time for both teams to shake off this strange sequence, because honestly, what else can you do in a moment like this?

College basketball analyst says UNC ‘expected’ to land Pete Nance

Matt Norlander of CBS Sports says he’s hearing that the UNC basketball program is ‘expected’ to land Northwestern transfer Pete Nance.

The UNC basketball program is in the middle of a big recruiting week and that revolves around one of the top transfers that entered the portal this offseason.

Northwestern transfer [autotag]Pete Nance[/autotag] is currently on an official visit to UNC and by all accounts, the forward should end up in North Carolina for next season.

Senior college basketball analyst for CBS Sports Matt Norlander gave his take on the Nance situation, saying he’s been told ‘it’s likely/expected’ that Nance will end up a Tar Heel.

North Carolina has been trying to fill the void left by Brady Manek at the 4 position this offseason. It went after Baylor transfer Matthew Mayer before he landed at Illinois. The only other option that UNC was tied to was Nance.

Nance averaged 14.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game last season. He shot 49.7 percent from the field and 45.2 percent from three on 3.1 attempts per game. For his career, he is a 35.6 percent shooter from three.

Nance had put his name in the NBA Draft and went through the draft process before withdrawing before the deadline.

He has one year of eligibility left due to the covid year of eligibility.

Nebraska vs Northwestern Game Preview, Big Ten Tournament

Why Nebraska Will Win

Forget about Gonzaga and Arizona and Baylor …

You do NOT want to play Nebraska right now.

The worst team in the Big Ten for most of the season, all of a sudden it can’t be stopped. Beating Penn State on the road is one thing, and taking out Ohio State in Columbus isn’t really any big deal at this point, but beating Wisconsin in Madison with an outright Big Ten Championship on the line?

What are the Huskers doing right? They’re out of their mind from the field, using 55% over the last four games. Combine that with fantastic free throw shooting, and it’s been a fun team that’s playing with a ton of momentum and a whole lot of confidence.

But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Northwestern Will Win

Northwestern was able to tag the Huskers a few weeks ago.

The Wildcats aren’t as fun or as fashionable as Nebraska right now, but it was able to roll from the field in a 77-65 win, it was good from three, and the D held firm from the outside.

That was good, and the 87-63 win over the Huskers in early February was even better.

Northwestern doesn’t turn the ball over, it makes enough threes to be annoying, and …

Nebraska vs Northwestern: What’s Going To Happen

Come on, everyone … Nebraska is going to wake up soon and be Nebraska again.

But not here.

The Huskers are moving the ball around well and they’re making their shots, but they’re winning this and moving on with free throws. Northwestern hasn’t been great on the line – it only came up with 70% or more once in the last five games – and Nebraska has been on fire making over 80% in February.

There’s a rude blowout coming soon, but again, not here.

Iowa vs Northwestern Game Preview

Why Northwestern Will Win

It’s been a rough few weeks for Northwestern, but what is it doing right?

It lost four out of its last five games, but it rose up and was on from three in the win over Nebraska, the defense hasn’t been all that bad, and there aren’t enough turnovers to be a problem.

The Wildcats are second in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio, giving it up ten times or fewer 13 times in the last 19 games. The offense is good at passing the ball around and setting up decent opportunities, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Iowa Will Win

Yeah, Northwestern is No. 2 in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio. Iowa is No. 1.

Northwestern just doesn’t shoot well. It was good against Nebraska, but who isn’t? It’s been a fight to get to 40% from the field – only getting there once in the last six games – and forget about putting 70 points on the board lately.

On the flip side, Iowa has won three straight and six of the last seven with the offense shooting well from the outside in the last two games, and with the scoring punch coming in all areas.

Iowa has a nice mix of positives happening right now. The scoring is there, the turnovers are at a minimum, and the threes are falling. Northwestern can’t handle any of it.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

As mediocre as Northwestern has been, it’s not getting totally annihilated on the road.

It’s going to lose – it has no chance of keeping up with the Hawkeyes – but the defense and style will be just strong enough to keep this from getting out of hand.

It’s going to take Iowa going dead-cold from the outside, and that’s not going to happen. It’s not going to give up the ball enough for easy Northwestern points.

Purdue vs Northwestern Game Preview

Why Purdue Will Win

Purdue had no problems in the 80-60 win over Northwestern the first time around back a few weeks ago because it hit 12 threes, was just fine on the inside, and it managed to outrebound the Wildcats without much of a problem.

Northwestern isn’t just this cute plucky team – it can score, and it wants to get the O going. Purdue is a whole lot better than that.

Northwestern doesn’t have the defense from three to hold up if Purdue gets going again, and worse than that, it gets hit with a whole lot of fouls and should get whacked on the free throw line.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Northwestern Will Win

This is an interesting team at home.

It doesn’t win as much as it should, but it plays everyone tight.

It game Illinois a fight in a low scoring tussle two weeks ago, it lost in two overtimes to Maryland, and it’s been able to give team after team a tough run.

The consistency isn’t there, but Purdue hasn’t exactly been all that steady lately. The shooting has been just okay, and the defense went bye-bye at Michigan – the team is just as likely to put up 62 as it is 82.

The Wildcats have to hang around, hit at least 45% from the field, rebound well defensively, and …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Northwestern will play just well enough to get its heart broken.

Purdue will get several more attempts on the free throw line than Northwestern, and it’ll do a far, far better job on the boards when it has to.

It’ll still be a struggle, but the Boilermakers will get by with a late push.

Illinois vs Northwestern Game Preview

Why Northwestern Will Win

The Wildcats gave the Illini a run a few weeks ago in a 59-56 loss, and they’ve won three straight since then including a win over a suddenly smoking Rutgers.

They’re hitting from the outside, they’re not turning the ball over and giving up easy points, and they’ve been surprisingly great on the boards.

In the first meeting they were great on the free throw line and were able to hold up against Illinois on the outside.

There wasn’t an answer for Kofi Cockburn on the inside, but if Northwestern can once again neutralize the Illini outside shooting, it’ll have a shot.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Illinois Will Win

Yeah, Mr. Cockburn.

Illinois is coming off a rough loss at Purdue, but it’s shooting just fine on the inside thanks to 21, the rebounding is among the best in the conference, and the offense is moving the ball around well enough to give a whole slew of other parts a scoring taste.

Northwestern might be playing well lately, and the offense showed up big for Rutgers and in the win over Indiana, but there’s going to be a problem.

Northwestern isn’t good enough at guarding the three.

It was able to do a good job over the last few games, but overall it allows teams to hit about 36% from outside the arc. So …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Work it inside to Cockburn, move it outside to grab the momentum from three, and get back on track after the Purdue loss. Illinois will come up with a stronger performance than the last meeting with Northwestern.

It won’t be a layup of a win, but it’ll come up with a nice performance with a great shooting day.

Illinois vs Northwestern Game Preview

Why Illinois Will Win

Illinois is trying so, so hard to get its mojo back.

This isn’t the 2021 team, and it’s got a big problem forcing mistakes for easy baskets, but it’s amazing on the boards – Kofi Cockburn has a whole lot to do with that – and it started to play defense again in a 56-55 win over Michigan State.

Northwestern might be scoring a bit more, but it can’t guard anything from three.

The Wildcats are getting bombed on way too easily, and now comes Illinois – no one in the Big Ten jacks up more from the outside.

It’s a bad combination. Illinois will shoot a lot of threes, Northwestern is just okay on the boards, there will be too many second chance points, and …

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why Northwestern Will Win

Illinois turns the ball over way, way too much.

Northwestern might not do a whole lot right overall defensively, and it’s not good at getting to the free throw line, but it’s careful with the ball and doesn’t give up a ton of easy baskets. It makes the possessions count, for the most part.

Yeah, Illinois was strong against Michigan State defensively a few days ago, but the defense couldn’t keep Maryland from scoring, and Purdue was fantastic from the outside.

Northwestern has to come up with the extra pass and hit the threes, it can’t get bogged down in a rebounding war, and …

AP college basketball top 25

What’s Going To Happen

Northwestern has lost seven of its last eight games because it can’t seem to come up with the big basket or the big play at the right time.

It’s also losing because the offense can’t keep up in shootouts of any kind.

The Wildcats might be a whole lot better offensively, but they’re 0-9 on the year when allowing more than 67 points, and 9-0 when it doesn’t.

Illinois has been held to under 67 points just four times. That’s not happening in Evanston.

Michigan State basketball falls at home to Northwestern

MSU drops a home game to Northwestern

Michigan State has played with fire over the past few games and they finally got burned. The Spartans fell to the bottom-dwelling Wildcats of Northwestern 64-62 at the Breslin Center on Saturday afternoon.

Another first half that saw the Spartans turn the ball over 12 times and put Michigan State in a 5-point hole going to the break.

The second half was a back and forth battle until the Wildcats pulled away with a little over 2 minutes left in the game. In a 57-56 game, Northwestern’s Ryan Young went on a 5-0 run to extend the game to 62-56. It took this run for coach Tom Izzo to take a nontraditional center in Joey Hauser off of the floor for a traditional center in Julius Marble. Ryan Young had a field day in the paint when Izzo put both Bingham and Marble on the bench, scoring 18 points, leading Northwestern.

Down 64-62 with 10 seconds left in the game, Michigan State had a chance to tie or take the lead. A play drawn up out of a time-out gave Malik Hall a wide-open look at the three to take the lead that he missed off the front rim. After a traveling violation, MSU had an out-of-bounds play with 1 second left. Marcus Bingham was fouled on the play giving him a chance to tie the game at the line. Bingham missed the front end of the 1-and-1 and the Spartans dropped the game.

Julius Marble was the lone bright spot of the day, leading Michigan State in scoring with 18 points.

If Michigan State wants to be in contention for a Big Ten title come March, it needs to sure up its turnover problem, and it absolutely cannot drop another game like this at home.

The Spartans will take court again on Friday on the road against the Wisconsin Badgers.
