Why Purdue Will Win

Purdue had no problems in the 80-60 win over Northwestern the first time around back a few weeks ago because it hit 12 threes, was just fine on the inside, and it managed to outrebound the Wildcats without much of a problem.

Northwestern isn’t just this cute plucky team – it can score, and it wants to get the O going. Purdue is a whole lot better than that.

Northwestern doesn’t have the defense from three to hold up if Purdue gets going again, and worse than that, it gets hit with a whole lot of fouls and should get whacked on the free throw line.

Why Northwestern Will Win

This is an interesting team at home.

It doesn’t win as much as it should, but it plays everyone tight.

It game Illinois a fight in a low scoring tussle two weeks ago, it lost in two overtimes to Maryland, and it’s been able to give team after team a tough run.

The consistency isn’t there, but Purdue hasn’t exactly been all that steady lately. The shooting has been just okay, and the defense went bye-bye at Michigan – the team is just as likely to put up 62 as it is 82.

What’s Going To Happen

Northwestern will play just well enough to get its heart broken.

Purdue will get several more attempts on the free throw line than Northwestern, and it’ll do a far, far better job on the boards when it has to.

It’ll still be a struggle, but the Boilermakers will get by with a late push.

Why Purdue Will Win

The defense is far, far better than it showed against Ohio State.

The Buckeyes have the No. 1 offense in college football in both scoring and yards – they’re doing that against everyone. Purdue still cranked up yards and points in the second half to at least get in some good exercise.

Score just a little bit against Northwestern and it’s over.

The Wildcats are struggling on offense, but the defense is just as big an issue. Purdue doesn’t really run, but it should be able to do it without a problem, and the midrange passing attack should go off.

No, Purdue really doesn’t run the ball.

It’s got the worst running game in the Big Ten – that’s because it throws – and it doesn’t normally bomb away. It comes up with a ton of yards, but it’s all midrange throws – Northwestern’s defense should be able to handle that a wee bit.

As much as the Wildcats are struggling, that’s partly because they’ve faced Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, and Michigan over the last month. Purdue has a defense, but the Northwestern passing game is just good enough to keep things moving and control the tempo of the game.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s like a bowl game for Northwestern. It’s actually more like a staycation for the 3-7 Wildcats, making the trip down the road to play in Wrigley Field for a quirky game that might be just the type of strange setting to throw Purdue off a tad.

The Boilermaker offense should be able to keep the offense going well enough – it’s been over 200 passing yards in every game – to make Northwestern press.

Northwestern needs Purdue to implode, and that’s not going to happen.

Why Northwestern Will Win

The defense has to stop Purdue’s outside shooters.

This is a wildly inconsistent Boilermaker team that’s been able to get by from time to time when the threes aren’t falling, but when they’re off they’re really off.

How off? Purdue has failed to hit more than 25% from three four of the last five games and four of their last six.

Northwestern might struggle at guarding the three, but the defense isn’t all that bad, it’s been okay at times over the last few games at keeping things from getting out of hand, and the team is okay from three.

Why Purdue Will Win

Northwestern doesn’t score enough, and it doesn’t make life easy with second chance points – offensive rebounds are too often a rumor.

Purdue might not always shoot well, but it rebounds just about everything, it’s good enough on the offensive boards, and it can play a little defense, too.

There have been a few off days throughout the season, but for the most part, the team has tightened up defensively – it hasn’t allowed more than 72 points in any game in 2021.

What’s Going To Happen

This isn’t going to be the game when the Northwestern offense gets healthy.

Purdue is struggling a bit, and it has a way of letting teams hang around a bit too often, but it ends up winning. It’ll get out to a good early start and Northwestern won’t get hot enough from the outside to come back in the second half.
