Let’s get wild, game 9! Crazy predictions for Notre Dame vs. UNC

An educated guess at some big performances for Notre Dame players against North Carolina this afternoon.

Bye weeks are the worst, making all of us wait just a bit longer to see the Irish hit the field again. Well, that day is finally here, one day earlier than normal. The Irish don’t have the easiest task ahead, North Carolina presents many challenges but after a bye week, Notre Dame should be rested and ready. Here are a few, crazy, but realistic predictions for Notre Dame today against the Tar Heels.

Ohio State leapfrogged by North Carolina in AP Poll

Ohio State still sits in poll ranking purgatory until it plays. The latest AP poll shows North Carolina leapfrogging the Buckeyes.

There’s a newcomer to the Associate Press Top 25 College Football Poll and it has a Carolina blue shade to it. No, this isn’t basketball, but the North Carolina Tar Heels are now ranked No. 5, leapfrogging Ohio State to do so.

And while the Amway Coaches Poll decided to elevate the Buckeyes one spot from No. 6 to No. 5 because of the Florida loss, the AP voters (who continue to bewilder) decided to keep OSU at No. 6 — seemingly continuing to penalize OSU for not yet playing a game.

The rest of the top ten looks pretty similar to the Amway Coaches with the same teams, just in a little different order. Clemson is No. 1 followed by Alabama (2), Georgia (3), Notre Dame (4), North Carolina (5), Ohio State (6), Oklahoma State (7), Cincinnati (8), Penn State (9), and Florida (10).

Proof that the AP voters have no idea what they are doing, the team below the Gators is the team that just beat them, Texas A&M. And yeah … the teams have the same 2-1 record so figure that one out.

OSU kicks off the season in under two weeks now against Nebraska on October 24. Maybe then, the Buckeyes will turn some heads and get back on everyone’s radar.

Here’s the rest of the AP Top 25

Notre Dame cracks Top 10 in Preseason AP Poll

For the second year in a row, Notre Dame is ranked inside the Top 10 in the AP preseason poll.

[jwplayer meEBf1Br-er0jUifI]

As college football creeps closer and closer to it’s opening kickoff, the preseason AP Poll was released today and Notre Dame was the final team inside the Top 10.

This might seem a bit low, but the AP included teams from the Big Ten and the PAC-12, even though they will not be playing football this fall. Ohio State (2), Penn State (7) and Oregon (9), are all in front of the Irish, but that is just logistical right now. Essentially the Irish are the 7th rated team in the country.

Here is the full top 25:

  1. Clemson
  2. Ohio State
  3. Alabama
  4. Georgia
  5. Oklahoma
  6. LSU
  7. Penn State
  8. Florida
  9. Oregon
  10. Notre Dame
  11. Auburn
  12. Wisconsin
  13. Texas A&M
  14. Texas
  15. Oklahoma State
  16. Michigan
  17. USC
  18. North Carolina
  19. Minnesota
  20. Cincinnati
  21. UCF
  22. Utah
  23. Iowa State
  24. Iowa
  25. Tennessee
Others receiving votes:

Memphis 86, Virginia Tech 85, Boise State 68, Arizona State 66, Miami (FL) 42, Louisville 32, Appalachian State 26, Washington 21, Kentucky 20, Indiana 19, Baylor 15, California 11, TCU 9, Virginia 7, Navy 6, Florida State 6, SMU 3, Mississippi State 3, Air Force 3, Northwestern 1, UAB 1

This is the second year in a row that Notre Dame Football will start off inside the Top 10, they were 9th in last years poll. In 2018, the Irish were just two spots outside the Top 10, beginning the year ranked 12th.

The expectations will be high in this odd season. The Irish will have to face the preseason number 1 team Clemson Tigers and the 18th ranked North Carolina Tar Heels. Those are the three lone ACC teams that were ranked by the AP. The SEC led everyone with 7 teams in the Top 25, while the Big Ten had 6 and the Big XII had 4. The PAC-12 tied the ACC with three teams also.

Report: ACC to delay decision on college football season

The league’s decision will impact the Auburn-UNC matchup scheduled for Sept. 12.

Whether Auburn will play North Carolina in Mercedes Benz Stadium on Sept. 12 is still up in the air.

Per Brett McMurphy, the ACC is not expected to make a decision on Wednesday about the league’s schedule when the schools’ respective presidents meet virtually, delaying the decision for another week.

Besides the Tigers matchup against the Tar Heels in the Chick-fil-A kickoff, there are other big games between the two conferences including the annual Georgia-Georgia Tech rivalry game, South Carolina against Clemson, Florida and Florida State and Kentucky against Louisville.

Presidents of the SEC are scheduled to meet virtually on Thursday to discuss how to go about the 2020 season, including if playing a conference-only schedule would be the way much like the Big Ten and Pac-12 have decided.

Roy Williams funds spring sports scholarships for seniors at UNC, including two golfers

The basketball coach and his wife, Wanda, donated more than $600,000 in May to fund scholarships for spring sports seniors.

Every year Roy Williams makes it a point to attend at least one home event for every sport on campus at the University of North Carolina. When he’s out watching a golf tournament, said women’s head coach Jan Mann, Williams doesn’t ask for a cart. The Tar Heels’ men’s basketball coach will talk to anyone who approaches and poses for pictures upon request. He knows the UNC players by name, too.

After spring sports teams had their seasons cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, an anonymous donor stepped up to cover the cost of scholarships for any senior who wanted to return for a fifth year. On Wednesday morning, Mann told senior Brynn Walker to be on the lookout for news about that generous donor.

Turns out it was Williams and his wife, Wanda, who donated more than $600,000 in May to fund scholarships for spring sports seniors.

“He’s just the most generous human being you’d ever want to meet,” said Mann.

UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham said Williams called him in March on the day the NCAA canceled all spring championships.

“He didn’t want those students to miss that experience and wanted to fund those scholarships for next year,” Cunningham said in a release. “I still get chills when I think about his phone call and the impact it would have for dozens of our students.”

On Austin Hitt’s first day on campus as a freshman, he went out to UNC’s practice facility around 5 p.m. to hit balls. The only other person on the range at the time was Williams. After he’d finished his practice session, Williams walked over and introduced himself, and they chatted for a couple of minutes. Hitt didn’t see Williams again on campus until several months later and was shocked to discover that Williams remembered his name.

“A lot of people have stories like that,” said Hitt. “I thought that was remarkable.”

Hitt actually lived for two years with Shae Rush, a member of the Tar Heel basketball team and attended every game that he could when not on the road. Rush told him that Williams often makes golf analogies during practice.

It was the day after UNC lost to Syracuse in the ACC basketball tournament that Hitt, now a senior, found out that the spring season was over. None of his teammates were still on campus as it was the start of spring break. He was back on the range, hitting balls with his coaches when the news broke.

It didn’t feel real at the time. The team, he said, was just catching its stride.

Men’s head coach Andrew DiBitetto had suspected that Williams was behind the donation for months. Williams had called one weekend asking fairly specific questions about DiBitetto’s roster and the senior class in particular.

UNC spring sport coaches were informed of Williams’ gift Thursday morning on a Zoom call. DiBitetto’s glad that he can now properly thank Williams for what he’s done.

“Roy and Wanda have donated millions of dollars to UNC, the athletic department, the Rams Club and individual sport programs over the years but have always chosen to do so without fanfare or publicity,” said John Montgomery, executive director of the Rams Club. “However, we felt this was the proper time to announce our appreciation for all they have done to support their alma mater’s academic and athletic pursuits and student-athletes across all 28 of our sports programs, and thank them for an extraordinarily generous contribution to allow our seniors another opportunity at competing in the spring.”

Recent graduate Mariana Ocano poses with Williams at UNC’s practice facility. Ocano took a job with Deloitte in Atlanta.

It’s amazing, said Mann, but not surprising.

“Roy was a student of Dean Smith,” she said, “and Dean Smith would’ve done the same.”

That spirit, Mann continued, is at the heart of the family atmosphere at UNC.

“I think that starts with basketball and works its way down,” she said. “It’s pretty special.”

There’s a crouching position Williams often gets into when he’s fired up on the sidelines, Mann said, and some years ago her entire team struck that crouching pose at a tournament and sent him the picture. Even now Williams keeps it there on his desk.

He probably remembers all their names, too.

37 North Carolina players and staff test positive for COVID-19

More COVID-19 news

On a very busy Wednesday in the college sports world, the latest news to hit the wires is that 37 University of North Carolina football players and staffers tested positive for COVID-19.

The school said it administered 429 tests to players, coaches and staff within its athletic department (not just football). The school reported a 12-percent rate for positive tests.

The revelation of the 37 positive tests within the football program forced North Carolina to suspend voluntary preseason football workouts. The school did not disclose the level of severity in any of the 37 positive cases, nor did it release a numerical breakdown of how many players and how many staffers tested positive. This story would read differently if 35 players and two staffers tested positive, compared to 25 players and 12 staffers tested positive, for instance. That information has not been made available at press time.

The main thing to be aware of in light of this report is the severity of any of these positive cases. The lightning-bolt moment — the moment all of us in college sports want to avoid — is an emergence of a severe COVID-19 case which sends a coach or a young athlete onto a ventilator, with lung capacity being damaged or some other aspect of long-term health being weakened. If we have even one such case of severe COVID-19, that’s it. College sports will flatly not occur after such a case — if one emerges — and the industry will have to wait for a vaccine, period. If a severe case exists, that’s a huge, game-changing story.

We haven’t had such a story yet in college sports, however. If none of these 37 cases present that degree of severity, it is not a seismic development.

The other point worth noting is that if 37 players and staffers were to test positive during the week before a regular season game, that team would very possibly have to not play.

Writers who closely study college sports, such as Pac-12 expert Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News, have laid out alternative plans for playing football in which open dates need to be made available for flexing games postponed by COVID-19. A 37-person positive outbreak would be the kind of scenario which leads to a postponement and a subsequent makeup date. This scenario comes at a time when the Big Ten is considering a 10-game, conference-only season and is trying to build in flexibility to account for COVID-19 disruptions.

Stay tuned for more analysis of these complicated, intertwined issues. This North Carolina story will add to public anxiety about playing college football, but it isn’t a game-changer unless any of the positive cases are severe. In the absence of added information, we can’t make any more specific claims about the meaning of this latest story.

Steelers RB James Conner warns not to sleep on Mitchell Trubisky

It seems like everyone has voiced their support for either Mitchell Trubisky or Nick Foles in the Bears’ quarterback battle.

Over the last few weeks, current and former NFL players have voiced their support for either Nick Foles or Mitchell Trubisky when it comes to the Chicago Bears’ quarterback battle. On Wednesday, another vote was cast for Trubisky, this time from an unlikely ally.

Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner, appearing on Barstool Sports’ Pardon My Take podcast, told everyone not to count out the Bears’ fourth-year quarterback.

“Make sure you’re not sleeping on my boy, Mitch though,” Conner said. “I think Mitch is going to come out hot this year. That’s my dog, I played Mitch [during] my senior year of high school. We’ve been going at it, you know Pitt vs. North Carolina, Steelers and Bears, even though I wasn’t playing that year…I know his work ethic, I know what he’s about to do so he’s going to come out fired up.”

Conner’s support for Trubisky stems from their high school days, but their meeting in 2016 must have left quite an impression, as well. Trubisky’s Tar Heels narrowly beat Conner’s Panthers 37-36 with Trubisky completing 35 of 46 passes for 453 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions. Both players were drafted in 2017, with Trubisky being picked with the second-overall pick by the Bears and Conner going late in the third round to the Steelers.

While they both suited up as rookies, neither one played a snap during the Bears-Steelers matchup in 2017 that saw the Bears win 23-17 in overtime. Still, Conner has a tremendous amount of respect for his former college adversary. Like others, he believes the best is yet to come for the 25-year old signal caller.

Nobody knows for sure how the quarterback competition between Trubisky and Foles will unfold later this summer, but it’s clear that despite Foles’ arrival, there are many around the league who refuse to sleep on Trubisky.
