Vikings sign LB Anthony Barr to active roster, Nick Vigil to practice squad

The Vikings made two roster moves on Friday afternoon

The Minnesota Vikings made two roster moves on Friday afternoon. Just a few days after placing both tight end T.J. Hockenson and outside linebacker D.J. Wonnum on injured reserve, the Vikings signed inside linebacker Anthony Barr to the active roster and inside linebacker Nick Vigil signed to the practice squad to fill the vacated spot.

The Vikings added Barr to the practice squad with the injury to Jordan Hicks suffered against the New Orleans Saints. Barr played against the Denver Broncos the following week. He has played in two games thus far with the Vikings in his second stint.

Vigil has been with the Vikings since cut down day up until last week when he was released from the practice squad to allow Hicks to return from injured reserve. Vigil’s stink on the free agent market lasts only one week as he returns to the practice squad on Friday afternoon.

With the move to add Barr to the active roster, the Vikings have one more spot open on the active roster.

Vikings inactives include Akayleb Evans, Lewis Cine to play

After a four week absence, Lewis Cine returns for the Minnesota Vikings as they take on the Chicago Bears on Monday night football.

The Minnesota Vikings have released their inactives for Monday night’s game against the Chicago Bears.

  • CB Akayleb Evans
  • TE Nick Muse
  • ILB Nick Vigil
  • G Chris Reed
  • OT Hakeem Adeniji
  • QB Jaren Hall

Evans is out for the second consecutive game. It’s the smart call with the bye week next week.

Muse is inactive for the 12th-consecutive game and Adeniji is inactive once again as well.

Vigil is inactive due to the health of Brian Asamoah II who returns after a four-game absence.

Hall is the emergency third quarterback and will be behind both Josh Dobbs and Nick Mullens.

The big thing here is that Lewis Cine is active for the first time since the October 29th game against the Green Bay Packers.

The game kicks off at 7:15 p.m. CST.

Vikings make 6 roster moves, distinctions

Ahead of Sunday’s game, the Vikings made six roster moves and distinctions to sure up their roster.

Sunday afternoon will be a major matchup for the Minnesota Vikings’ playoff push as they take on the New Orleans Saints.

Both teams currently sit at 5-4 with a wild card berth a possibility as well as a division title. These two teams could be looking at a possible tiebreaker scenario for their playoff lives.

Heading into Sunday’s game, the Vikings made multiple roster moves and cleared up some distinctions. Let’s take a look at all six and what they mean for the team.

Vikings make 7 roster moves, distinctions

The Vikings roster saw some changes on Saturday

Heading into Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, the Minnesota Vikings have made multiple roster moves and changed distinctions that could make a real impact.

Saturday afternoons are a day where these are common, as you have to elevate players from the practice squad by 3 p.m. C[anyclip-media thumbnail=”undefined” playlistId=”undefined” content=”dW5kZWZpbmVk”][/anyclip-media]entral time in order for them to play on Sunday.

Here are the seven roster moves and distinctions made by the Vikings on Saturday.

Vikings make two roster moves ahead of Sunday’s game

The Vikings signed a WR to the active roster and elevated an LB in place of Brian Asamoah II

The Minnesota Vikings made two roster moves ahead of Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers.

  • Vikings have signed WR Trishton Jackson from the practice squad to the active roster.
  • Vikings have elevated ILB Nick Vigil from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Packers.

Jackson was likely to be signed to the active roster at some point. The Vikings had already activated him the maximum of three times this year and he wouldn’t be able to play again unless on the active roster.

Vigil spent time on the Vikings roster during the 2021 season and signed to the practice squad after final cuts in August.

The Vikings and Packers kick off at noon on Sunday.

Jets sign pair of linebackers, Nick Vigil and Sam Eguavoen

Jets sign a pair of linebackers

After working out a few linebackers Saturday, the Jets signed a pair of linebackers, Nick Vigil and Sam Eguavon, as reported by their agent David Canter.

Vigil was drafted in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Utah State by the Cincinnati Bengals. He spent four years there and has bounced around since then, making stops with the Chargers, Vikings and, most recently, the Cardinals.

Vigil has played in 89 games (53 starts) and has recorded 443 career tackles. He had 13 tackles in four games last season for the Cardinals before being placed on injured reserve early in October.

Eguavoen came into the league in 2019 following three years with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. He spent four seasons with the Miami Dolphins, appearing in all 66 games (seven starts). He has 71 career tackles. He was mostly a special-teams player for the Dolphins but did start six games on defense for the Dolphins in 2019.

Update: the Jets released linebackers Hamsah Nasirildeen and Maalik Hall in corresponding moves.

59 days until Vikings season opener: Every player to wear No. 59

We continue counting down to the start of the season by looking at every player to wear No. 59 for the Vikings.

It’s the final countdown…

Well, sort of.

The Minnesota Vikings will kick off their 2023 regular season in 59 days at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 10.

From now until then, we will take a trip down memory lane and count each day by revisiting the players that have worn that specific jersey number.

Nick Vigil was the last to wear the number, but Matt Blair headlines the list of players who ever wore No. 59 in purple and gold.

With 59 days until kickoff, here’s a look at every player to wear No. 59 with the Vikings (via Pro Football Reference):

LB Nick Vigil ‘a nice addition’ for Cardinals on defense

Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph sees the free agent addition as a linebacker who can do everything.

The Arizona Cardinals signed former Minnesota Vikings linebacker Nick Vigil this offseason in free agency, a move that surely did not move the needle much for Cardinals fans. However, he appears to be set to have an important role on the Arizona defense.

With third-year linebacker Isaiah Simmons set to play all over the field in the team’s “star backer” role, playing linebacker, rushing off the edge, playing safety and even at slot cornerback, Vigil figures to get extension playing time next to second-year linebacker Zaven Collins.

Vigil is no stranger to being in the starting lineup. He has started 51 games in his NFL career, including 12 last year in 16 games for the Vikings.

While few are excited about Vigil this season, defensive coordinator Vance Joseph is a fan.

“Nick’s been a nice addition for us,” Joseph said Saturday after practice. “He’s a veteran player that’s played a lot of football. He hasn’t stuck a lot of places because they keep drafting first-round picks behind him, but he’s always played good football.”

Last year, he had 85 tackles, a sack and an interception he returned for a touchdown against the Cardinals in Week 2. His best season was in 2016 when he started all 16 games for the Cincinnati Bengals and had 111 tackles, a sack, an interception and two fumble recoveries.

Joseph trusts him.

“He’s long and smart and can cover,” he said. “He plays all three downs…He can really run.”

Playing for the Vikings last season, he worked under Mike Zimmer, who Joseph says is “one of (his) guys.”

Vigil might not start every game this season, depending on the game plan the Cardinals have for Simmons each week, but he should end up being a critical piece in the middle of the defense.

Hopefully, he shows what Joseph sees in him.
