Nick Vigil salary, contract details, salary cap implications

Vigil gets a one-year deal worth a total of $1.77 million, fully guaranteed.

The Arizona Cardinals have made only two free agent additions from outside the organization. The latest was linebacker Nick Vigil, who played last season for the Minnesota Vikings.

The contract numbers are out. His deal will not affect the Cardinals’ compensatory pick formula and it isn’t much more than Vigil made a season ago.

Nick Vigil contract details

According to Over the Cap, the contract is one year for a total of $1.77 million. It is fully guaranteed. He made $1.75 million last season.

He receives a $550,000 signing bonus and will be paid slightly more than the league minimum. His 2022 salary will be $1.22 million, all of which is guaranteed.

It all but assures him a spot on the roster this coming season.

There are no other roster bonuses and no voided years on the back end.

Salary cap implications

Because his contract is for only one year and there are no void years, his cap hit is straightforward. It counts $1.77 million against the salary cap.

POLL: What do you think of the Nick Vigil signing?

The Cardinals signed veteran LB Nick Vigil. What do you think of the signing? Vote in the poll and tell us in the comments.

The Arizona Cardinals added veteran linebacker Nick Vigil in free agency on Tuesday. The team already has a bunch of linebackers on the roster with Zaven Collins, Isaiah Simmons, Tanner Vallejo, Joe Walker and Zeke Turner.

Collins and Simmons are expected to be the starters and Vallejo got a bunch of playing time last season, so the addition was not considered a large need.

However, having been a starter most of his career, he can give the defense starting-caliber play if either Collins or Simmons gets hurt or is ineffective. He ideally is a better option on the field than Vallejo.

We have not seen the contract numbers yet, but it is not likely to be expensive. He had 85 tackles last season and 111 in 2019.

What do you think of the signing? Vote in the poll and give your thoughts in the comment section below.

Former Vikings LB Nick Vigil signing with Cardinals

After one season as a Viking, Vigil is heading to the desert to join the Cardinals

After a one-and-done season with the Minnesota Vikings, linebacker Nick Vigil is heading to the desert to join the Arizona Cardinals, per David Canter of GSE Worldwide.

Vigil, 28, was one of the unsung heroes for the Vikings defense last season. He started in 12 games and compiled 85 tackles, one sack and four tackles for a loss.

It was a solid season considering he was already coming off a previous one-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers.

In the Vikings’ Week 2 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals, Vigil picked off quarterback Kyler Murray and returned it to the house for a 38-yard touchdown.

Now, he’ll be standing on the same sideline with Murray in an effort to help get the Cardinals back on track after they imploded in the wild card round of the NFL Playoffs last season.

The signings of outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith and former Cardinals linebacker Jordan Hicks has the Vikings sitting comfortably, as Vigil looks to make his mark on his third football team in three years.

Cardinals sign former Vikings LB Nick Vigil

Vigil had 85 tackles last season for the Vikings and had a pick-6 against Kyler Murray in Week 2. He gives the Cardinals veteran depth at LB.

The Arizona Cardinals have finally signed a free agent. It is once again a former Minnesota Viking and it is also at a position that doesn’t really have a big need.

The team announced the signing of linebacker Nick Vigil, who played last year for the Vikings.

Vigil has been in the league since 2016, drafted in the third round by the Cincinnati Bengals. He played four seasons for the Bengals, then one season for the Los Angeles Chargers and then last season for the Vikings.

In 2021, he played in 16 games and started 12 of them. He had 85 tackles, a sack and an interception he returned for a touchdown. That pick-6 was against the Cardinals in Week 2.

He has been a starter for most of his career.

How does he fit in with the Cardinals in 2022?

Assuming Zaven Collins and Isaiah Simmons are expected to be the starters, Vigil gives the Cardinals experienced depth and could compete for a starting job. And if the Cardinals move Simmons around at all, it gives defensive coordinator Vance Joseph a more established player to use.

He will compete with Tanner Vallejo and Joe Walker for playing time.

He also plays on special teams. He played 198 special teams snaps last season and 216 in 2020 for the Chargers.

We will have to wait and see on the contract. He signed a one-year, $1.75 million deal last season for Minnesota.

3 pending free agents that should be no-brainer returns for Vikings

3 pending free agents that should be no-brainer returns for Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings have some tough decisions to make to escape from the salary cap hell they currently find themselves in. They’re $12.1 million over the cap right now, which is the fourth-worst situation in the NFL.

The new general manager that comes in will have to roll up his or her sleeves and get to work in addressing multiple bloated contracts, along with making the tough decisions of who stays and goes on the roster.

However, there are a few players on the list that should immediately be signed to a new deal. It’s best not to complicate things and just go ahead and take care of these contracts before handling anything else.

Here are three pending free agents that are no-brainers to return for the Vikings.

Vikings place LB Nick Vigil on COVID-19/Reserve list

The Vikings placed LB Nick Vigil on COVID-19/Reserve, the team announced Thursday.

Minnesota’s linebacker depth took a hit on Thursday.

The Vikings placed LB Nick Vigil on the COVID-19/Reserve list. Vigil has been a key cog in the Minnesota defense for much of the season — with both LBs Anthony Barr and Eric Kendricks dealing with injury issues.

The Vikings have other depth linebackers who offer something different than Vigil, like Blake Lynch, for instance. However, Minnesota has a pivotal Week 17 against Green Bay this year. The Vikings need all the reinforcements they can get, so Vigil being in COVID-19 protocol is not a good sign.

Also, the Vigil news comes after the Vikings listed LB Chazz Surratt as “DNP” on the Wednesday injury report. Surratt is pretty low on the linebacker depth chart — he has zero defensive snaps this season — but he could still serve as depth against Green Bay.

Also, Surratt is more of a pass coverage linebacker, and while it should be cold at Lambeau Field on Sunday, the Packers are a pass-happy team. Surratt can still possibly play and so can Vigil, but these moves were a step in the wrong direction for a team dealing with a lot of bad luck at the moment.

Vikings PFF grades: Lowest defensive grades from the loss to the Browns

See the lowest defensive PFF grades on the Vikings from the Week 4 loss.

For the second week in a row, the Vikings defense rationalized their 2021 free agency overhaul.

The retooled group was stout in defense, as Minnesota fell to Cleveland by a score of 14-7. Obviously, the Vikings did not lose the game on account of the defense.

Not everything was positive about the defense, though. Here are the lowest PFF grades among Vikings players on defense:

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer has an injury update on Anthony Barr

“He’s feeling better every single day,” Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said of Anthony Barr.

Just like 2020, the Vikings have some work to do in order to try and salvage their season.

Minnesota fell to 1-3 on Sunday. The Vikings have a few excuses: the Browns defensive line is stellar and the team was missing some key players.

Mike Zimmer has some updates for those key players:

Zimmer said he thinks Anthony Barr will play this week. The head coach also said that he has yet to hear back about Michael Pierce’s MRI.

“I think Nick Vigil has done a really nice job,” Zimmer said. “He’s very smart, very diligent. Anthony Barr has been in the system for a long, long time. There’s certain things we can do with him, that we haven’t been able to do in his first four ball games. He’s feeling better every single day.”

Barr was injured in the second game of the 2020 season with a torn pec. Now, he has a knee injury that has sidelined him from this year. We should have a better idea of when Barr gets back when the injury report comes out.

Three pleasant surprises on the Vikings so far

Here are some Vikings players who have surprised so far:

For Vikings fans, it can be hard to find a lot of silver linings in the 2021 season.

The Vikings’ retooled defense has looked inconsistent. Minnesota was upset by Cincinnati in Week 1. In Week 2, the Vikings lost at the end of the game due to a missed field goal.

However, Minnesota has been close in both of those games. Does that mean the team will turn things around? Not necessarily, but it does mean there is hope.

Here are three pleasant surprises on the Vikings:

Vikings Wednesday injury report: Two DNP and two limited

See the Vikings’ injury report for Wednesday:

The Vikings received some bad news on the injury report last week.

After both players were limited at times heading into the Week 1 matchup with the Bengals, LB Anthony Barr and OT Christian Darrisaw were ruled out for the regular season opener.

So far, both are still on the injury report for Wednesday. Here is the full list with their practice status for each:
