5 Giants with most to gain in preseason matchup vs. Lions

These 5 New York Giants could gain the most with a strong performance against the Detroit Lions on Friday night in Week 1 of the preseason.

The New York Giants open their 2023 preseason schedule on Friday night when they face the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.

The Giants’ roster has just a few position battles to focus on and they will be decided on the field. But there are other things to watch such as the 53-man roster.

For some players, they will need to play well to stick while others are fighting their way up the depth chart.

Here are five Giants players who have the most to gain in the game.

Giants minicamp: Notes, videos and highlights from Day 1

News, notes, highlights and a few videos from Day 1 of the New York Giants’ 2023 mandatory minicamp.

After canceling their final two practices of organized team activities (OTAs) due to poor air quality, the New York Giants were back at it on Tuesday. This time for their mandatory two-day minicamp.

Running back Saquon Barkley, who has not yet signed his franchise tender, is not permitted to take part in team-related activities and was not in attendance per NFL rules. He will not be fined for his absence.

On the schedule were press conferences with the team’s defensive assistants, head coach Brian Daboll and assistant general manager Brandon Brown. Select players also spoke with members of the media following a two-hour practice.

Here’s a look at some notes, highlights and videos from Day 1.

Adoree’ Jackson, now a mentor, excited to play alongside Deonte Banks

New York Giants CB Adoree’ Jackson discusses Deonte Banks, what Darren Waller adds to the offense and offers high praise for Nick McCloud.

New York Giants cornerback Adoree’ Jackson has gained much from mentors over the course of his career and now finds himself in that same role. The 27-year-old is the veteran of the room and will oversee a group of young bucks this coming season.

One of those is rookie first-round pick Deonte Banks, who has already made quite the impression on Jackson.

“I’m excited,” Jackson said of playing alongside Banks. “I think about when I was in Tennessee, and I had Logan Ryan being able to help me and mentor me. And the following year, I had Malcolm Butler. I always think of it as an added benefit to us as a whole, not just the defense but the team as a whole. So, I’m excited, watched his tape. Like him. Watched him go through the walk-throughs, different things. Talked to him. He’s got a good head on his shoulder. Seems like a great guy. I was excited to get Banks.”

Jackson says Banks has fit right in with the Giants, embracing the culture and the experiences of being a rookie.

“It hasn’t been a challenge (for him). He’s a great guy. He’s been acceptable to the culture, what we’re trying to build here. And I can’t do anything but really appreciate him and welcome him in the same as us,” Jackson said. “It takes a lot to gain so much trust and vice versa. He came up with open arms as we did. He’s been a good guy, giving us laughs, singing and stuff, which is pretty cool to see him not shy away or be shy at all and trying to be one of us, it’s dope to see.”

Banks will undoubtedly make some mistakes — all rookies do — but Jackson just wants to make sure he learns from them and doesn’t repeat them.

“What Dick LeBeau taught me when I was in Tennessee, if something doesn’t go my way or if a play doesn’t go this, that or a third, he always told me his experiences and what goes on, just give him tools to make him better. I think that’s the best thing a veteran cornerback can do, just let somebody learn from their mistakes and try to help them and be that voice of reason in their ear, how I would have wanted it vice versa. Just trying to be there as much as possible for him,” he said.

Giants OTAs: Notes, videos and highlights from Day 5

News, notes and highlights from the New York Giants’ fifth day of organized team activities (OTAs).

The New York Giants were back in East Rutherford on Wednesday for their fifth practice of organized team activities (OTAs) and their second open to members of the media.

Head coach Brian Daboll opened things up with his traditional press conference and touched on a number of topics before players took the field.

The Giants remain in walkthrough mode — no pads and no contact. They have five practices remaining after today.

Below is a recap of the day, including news, notes, highlights, and a few videos.

Brandon Beane knew Giants would pluck good players from Bills roster

Buffalo Bills GM Brandon Beane fully expected New York Giants GM Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll to poach some of their talent last year.

Last offseason, following the New York Giants’ hiring of Joe Schoen as their next general manager, the team hired Brian Daboll to be their next head coach.

While their names may not have been familiar to many Giants fans, there was a sense of confidence in the new general manager-head coach combo given their time together building the Buffalo Bills into a contender.

The two have not forgotten their roots and have even brought over some talent from their time in Buffalo. That did not come as a surprise to Bills general manager Brandon Beane.

“Whenever we cut down our practice squad, we know we can lose guys, but particularly with Joe and Brian moving to New York, they knew our players and so you know it’s going to be harder to get guys through the cracks,” Beane told NJ Advance Media at the NFL owners’ meetings. “So I was thinking about it when we made the moves, but if it wasn’t the two guys they got, it would have been a couple of other guys that they would have done the same thing with.”

The Giants added former Bills offensive lineman Jon Feliciano and running back Matt Breida in free agency last year.

It didn’t end there as the Giants claimed defensive back Nick McCloud just days before the season began and wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins as a midseason pickup off waivers.

“He’s a pro and a hard worker,” Beane said of McCloud. “Nick knows what he’s good at and he knows the areas where he has to improve and sometimes players fail because they don’t recognize where they struggle. Nick is also instinctive and smart. He knows pre-snap what’s coming and it helps him get into the right position.”

Losing Hodgins also came as no surprise.

“We had thought for a couple of years that we could lose Isaiah,” Beane said. “We knew he could play.”

McCloud and Hodgins were great finds for Schoen. McCloud played over 50 percent of both the defensive and special teams snaps last season.

Hodgins turned into one of Daniel Jones’ favorite receivers down the stretch and had a big performance in the wild-card game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Notre Dame football: Down to 3 Former Domers in NFL Playoffs

Who wins this weekend?

Four teams remain in the NFL playoffs after this weekend’s divisional match-ups.  In the AFC it was the Chiefs getting by despite an injury to star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, as they knocked out the Jaguars.  In doing so, former Notre Dame wide receiver [autotag]Kevin Austin[/autotag], a practice squad member in Jacksonville, was knocked out as well.  The Chiefs will take on the Bengals for the AFC title for a second year in a row.

In the NFC it’ll be the 49ers traveling east to Philadelphia as three Notre Dame players will be dressed in that game.  Check out which former Domers advanced below.

The Eagles beating the Giants eliminated [autotag]Jaylon Smith[/autotag], [autotag]Julian Love[/autotag], and [autotag]Nick McCloud[/autotag] while [autotag]Zack Martin[/autotag] was knocked out with the Cowboys loss.

Irish fans can root for whichever NFC team wins Sunday to win it all as that would mark the 46th and perhaps 47th former Notre Dame players to win on Super Bowl Sunday.

7 biggest surprises of Giants’ 2022 season

The New York Giants were full of surprises in 2022 — some good and some bad — so we look back at the seven biggest.

The New York Giants season is over and now comes the time for us to unpack what the heck we witnessed this year.

There were a few disappointments this year and quite a number of surprises.

Here’s a look at seven of those surprises.

4 former Golden Domers knocked out of NFL divisional playoffs on Saturday

Which former Notre Dame player(s) has the best shot at a ring this year?

For Notre Dame fans, eight former Golden Domers remained in the NFL playoffs when the divisional round kicked off on Saturday.  As the day has come and gone, just four players remain ahead of Sunday’s contests.

In the first game Saturday, the Kansas City Chiefs were able to survive despite having to play without Patrick Mahomes for a decent amount of the game.  Their 27-20 win over the Jaguars means that the Chiefs are headed to the AFC championship game for the fifth-straight season.  As a result, former Notre Dame wide receiver [autotag]Kevin Austin[/autotag], a member of Jacksonville’s practice squad, saw his team eliminated.

The Saturday nightcap between the Eagles and Giants was over seemingly as soon as it got started.  Philadelphia moved the ball at will in the first half and played suffocating defense en-route to a 28-0 halftime lead.  The Eagles ultimately won 38-7 to advance to the NFC championship game that they’ll host next week.  Former Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book moves along with them while [autotag]Julian Love[/autotag], [autotag]Nick McCloud[/autotag], and [autotag]Jaylon Smith[/autotag] are done for the year with the Giants exit.

8 former Notre Dame players advance to NFL divisional playoffs

Who do you have winning the Super Bowl this year?

The NFL’s extended wild card weekend came to an end Monday night as the Cowboys routed the Buccaneers 31-14 in Tampa.  Was it the final game for Tom Brady in the NFL?  Time will tell for the legend, but a highly anticipated divisional round now awaits football fans next weekend.

For Notre Dame rooters, eight of the 18 players to make the postseason this year advance to the round of eight.  The Irish are guaranteed to be represented in the Super Bowl this year as they’ve got a former player on all four remaining NFC teams, but have only one practice squad player remaining in the AFC.

Here are the eight former Notre Dame players who advanced with their teams to the NFL divisional playoffs.

6 Giants finish among top-10 at their position in Pro Bowl fan voting

Six members of the New York Giants finished within the top 10 at their position in 2023 Pro Bowl Games fan voting.

Fan voting for the 2023 Pro Bowl Games has officially come to a close and six members of the New York Giants finished among the top 10 at their position.

Thanks to a late surge, nose tackle Dexter Lawrence crept back into the top 10, but running Saquon Barkley slipped a bit. The No. 1 vote-getter for more than a month, Barkley slid down to No. 2 at his position behind Christian McCaffrey (San Francisco 49ers).

Here’s a look at all six Giants who finished among the top 10:

  • RB Saquon Barkley (2nd)
  • ST Nick McCloud (5th)
  • S Julian Love (6th)
  • OT Andrew Thomas (8th)
  • K Graham Gano (8th)
  • DT Dexter Lawrence (10th)

Fan voting counts for one-third of the final vote. NFL players and coaches also account for one-third of the vote each.

Full Pro Bowl rosters will be announced on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. ET on NFL Network. The Games will be held on Sunday, February 5, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. ET at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Events will include a live Pro Bowl Skills Challenge and an AFC vs. NFC flag football game.
