Chiefs claim former Cowboys CB Eric Scott Jr. off waivers

The #Chiefs claimed former #Cowboys CB Eric Scott Jr. off waivers this week to add depth to their defensive backfield.

The Kansas City Chiefs made more roster moves on Wednesday, picking up former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Eric Scott Jr. via a waiver claim.

Scott showed promise during the preseason after spending most of his rookie season on the bench. The young cornerback finally got some action with the Cowboys in August, logging six tackles and defending two passes.

While this will be Scott’s first time playing football in Kansas City, the Chiefs’ latest cornerback is a native of the Sunflower State, and is likely excited to play for his home team.

He was a collegiate standout at Southern Mississippi who should continue to impress in the NFL as he matures.

Being a waiver move, the Chiefs had to make a corresponding cut to add Scott. Chiefs Wire legend Charlie Goldman posted on Twitter that the team waived Nic Jones to make room for Scott.

Brett Veach has an eye for talent and Scott looks to be a potential depth upgrade for the Chiefs’ defensive backfield.

Chiefs released 2023 draft pick CB Nic Jones on Wednesday

Kansas City #Chiefs released 2023 draft pick CB Nic Jones on Wednesday | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs’ initial selections for the 53-man roster aren’t yet in the clear as the front office continues to make adjustments.

According to the team’s transactions log, Kansas City has released cornerback Nic Jones. The 2023 seventh-round draft selection became expendable following the waiver claim of defensive back Eric Scott.

Jones played nine games during his lone season with the Chiefs, collecting four tackles. He was among the many young defensive backs competing for limited spots in the secondary. The Ball State standout showed flashes of promise in training camp last year, but they didn’t translate immediately during his limited time on the field.

The 6-foot, 185-pound cornerback was selected 250th overall because of his excellent ball skills and versatility, with snaps inside and outside on defense. He also stood out as a strong special teams performer, catching Kansas City’s attention.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach has managed to retain several players cut over the last 24 hours to the practice squad. There will continue to be movement as the team seeks the best personnel ahead of Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens.

PFF: Second-year CB earns top grade in Chiefs’ preseason finale vs. Bears

Nic Jones was the #Chiefs’ highest-graded player in Kansas City’s loss to the Bears on Thursday night.

The Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Chicago Bears in their final preseason game of 2024 on Thursday night, falling well short of a win with a 34-21 final score.

The Chiefs had hoped to bounce back from two consecutive preseason losses but were unable to compete with the Bears’ high-octane offense.

While Kansas City’s starters were on the bench for the entire game, the Chiefs’ second and third-stringers were called upon to play a full four quarters, giving them a chance to earn coveted spots on the team’s 53-man roster.

When Pro Football Focus released their grades for Kansas City’s players after Thursday’s matchup against Chicago, second-year defensive back Nic Jones was revealed to be the Chiefs’ top performer.

Though his standout performance against the Bears won’t necessarily guarantee Jones a spot on Kansas City’s 53-man roster, Andy Reid and Brett Veach will certainly need to think twice if they consider cutting him next week.

Chiefs DB Kamal Hadden on returning from injury: ‘I feel like I am back’

Chiefs DB Kamal Hadden on returning from injury: ‘I feel like I am back’ | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs’ late-round selections in recent NFL Drafts have proven fruitful.

Chiefs rookie defensive back Kamal Hadden had his college career ended earlier than expected following a shoulder injury last fall. He addressed the status of his surgically repaired shoulder to reporters on Friday.

“I feel back when I feel like I’m back. “said Hadden. “It’s really good to be back on the field. I feel like I’m more faster, I feel like I’m stronger, and mainly, I feel like I’m smarter, so that just the game took me out, but it helped me grow mentally and helped me grow as a man and as a player.”

Hadden was a sixth-round selection in this year’s NFL Draft. He finished his last year at Tennessee with 19 tackles, three interceptions, and a touchdown in a shortened year. As training camp begins, he has developed a close connection with a Chiefs teammate.

“Me and Nic Jones are from Michigan, so I train with him a lot. And, just asking him questions every day when we train, bouncing things off of him while we are training, and asking him any little things to help me help a rookie come in,” said Hadden. “Because he was also a rookie, I just asked him little things like that every day while we trained. “

Harden will compete in camp to join the talented Chiefs’ defensive secondary unit.

10 Chiefs with the most to prove in Kansas City’s preseason matchup vs. Saints

These 10 #Chiefs have the most to prove in Kansas City’s preseason kickoff against the #Saints on Sunday.

The Kansas City Chiefs intend to defend their Super Bowl LVII title in 2023 and are in the process of determining which players belong on their 53-man roster ahead of the new season. Preseason exhibitions are an ideal time for younger athletes to make their case for a spot on the team, and several Chiefs will have something to prove ahead of Kansas City’s kickoff on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.

Guys like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Creed Humphrey, and L’Jarius Sneed have nothing to fear heading into the highly anticipated preseason matchup, but others will be fighting for their jobs in the Big Easy. Expectations are high for the Chiefs, and they can’t afford to keep anyone who hasn’t proven to be the best of the best if they want to win a second straight championship.

Here are 10 players who have the most to prove in Kansas City’s tilt against New Orleans on Sunday:

Chiefs rookie class: Grading their training camp performance

Check out our grades for all of the #Chiefs’ top rookies through two weeks of training camp practices.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ 2023 rookie class has shown flashes of brilliance at the team’s training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri. Second-round wide receiver Rashee Rice has the deepest highlight reel of the group through two weeks of practices, but others like Keondre Coburn, Nic Jones, and Felix Anudike-Uzomah have been standout performers at their respective positions.

A few undrafted players have also stood out for the team in workouts, particularly running back Deneric Prince and receiver Nikko Remigio.

WATCH: Chiefs rookie Nic Jones denies Patrick Mahomes long completion

Rookie cornerback Nic Jones denied Patrick Mahomes a deep completion to Marquez Valdes-Scantling during Friday’s practice session.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ defense seems to be out to prove something during the second week of training camp and rookie cornerback Nic Jones made his presence felt on Friday when he denied Patrick Mahomes a long completion to veteran receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Kansas City Sports Network posted footage of Jones’ pass breakup to Twitter shortly after his impressive effort took place.

Jones has shown an ability to cover the Chiefs’ burgeoning receiving corps in practice and should get a chance to showcase what he can do in live-game action during the preseason. As a seventh-round draft pick, Jones isn’t likely to be counted on much during the regular season, but if he can keep making plays like these in Kansas City’s three exhibition games, he may push for playing time sooner than some expect.

Fans should keep their eyes on Jones as training camp progresses and particularly during the preseason as the Chiefs’ coaching staff figures out where he will fit in defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s scheme.

Chiefs rookie Nic Jones intercepts Patrick Mahomes during Tuesday practice

Nic Jones got a taste of the spotlight at #Chiefs training camp after picking off Patrick Mahomes during seven-on-seven drills.

Rookie cornerback Nic Jones got his first taste of the spotlight at the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice session on Tuesday when he intercepted quarterback Patrick Mahomes during seven-on-seven drills.

Mahomes made a great effort to chase Jones to the boundary after the errant pass, but the rookie seemed to find an extra gear to accelerate to the edge of the field and may have found the endzone if the play hadn’t been whistled dead.

Jones will face an uphill battle to get consistent playing time in defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s system as a seventh-round pick, but plays like this should move the needle as the coaching staff assesses their options in the secondary.

His exceptional ball skills were a key factor in the Chiefs’ decision to draft him back in April, and with more repetitions in drills at training camp, Jones could turn a corner heading into the preseason as he looks to justify his spot on Kansas City’s 53-man roster.

Steelers rookie OT Spencer Anderson claims he was almost drafted by Chiefs

A #Steelers rookie offensive tackle says that the #Chiefs were targeting him and a defensive back at pick No. 250 in the 2023 NFL draft.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

Did the Kansas City Chiefs almost go a different route with pick No. 250 in the 2023 NFL draft?

The Chiefs selected Ball State CB Nic Jones in the seventh round, and to this point in the offseason program, he’s been a standout. Apparently, Jones wasn’t the only player the team was considering at pick No. 250.

Speaking on the Three Point Stance podcast with Kaleb Everhart and Derwin Gray, Pittsburgh Steelers rookie OT Spencer Anderson revealed that he thought he was going to be drafted by the Chiefs.

“When we were getting towards the final round of the draft, the phones start picking up more and more. Teams start reaching out, the 49ers, the Ravens, whoever it was. I had no clue that I was going to go to Pittsburgh,” Anderson said. “I was on the phone with Kansas City and I remember that Kansas City had the pick right before the Steelers. Kansas City had told me they were going to with me or a DB. If their DB went off the board, they were going to go with me. I remember, I was on the phone with Andy Reid, I was talking to him. He was just like, ‘Sit tight.’ And I was like, ‘Cool.'”

Anderson said that he saw a defensive back or two get drafted leading up to pick No. 250 and he thought that he was in the clear to join the reigning Super Bowl champions. But then a few picks before the Chiefs came on the clock, something happened.

“I was still supposed to be staying on the phone with Andy Reid,” Anderson said. “He’s like, ‘You’re a heck of a player.’ And all of that stuff. . . and then I got a call from (Steelers GM) Omar (Khan) . . . He put me on the phone with Coach Tomlin. He was like, ‘Hey, man, versatility is your calling card, so we’re going to go ahead and submit you with our next pick.’”

The Steelers held pick No. 251, one selection following Kansas City. They took Anderson there with the Chiefs selecting Jones at pick No. 250.

What Anderson says he can’t discern is whether Kansas City passed him over because he hung up on Andy Reid to speak to Khan and Tomlin or if Jones was actually the defensive back they wanted in the first place. I think the latter is probably the most likely, but it’s certainly interesting to hear that the Chiefs had an interest in this offensive tackle. It’ll also be unique to follow the careers of both players to find out whether Brett Veach got it right.

WATCH: Chiefs rookie CB Nic Jones intercepts Patrick Mahomes in practice

#Chiefs rookie CB Nic Jones is off to a hot start at mandatory minicamp practice.

Kansas City Chiefs seventh-round draft pick Nic Jones started off rookie minicamp hot back in May. Now, he’s making his presence felt during mandatory minicamp practices.

With CBs Trent McDuffie and L’Jarius Sneed sidelined by injury, the rookie is seeing more and more opportunities with the first and second-team defense. Facing off against the starting offense during Day 1 of mandatory minicamp practices, Jones came down with an athletic interception on a misfire from Chiefs’ starting QB Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes double-clutched the pass and seemingly threw it behind TE Jody Fortson. The third-year tight end extended to try and make a play on the ball, but he ended up popping it right into Jones’ hands instead.

The crazy part is that this wasn’t Jones’ only play on the ball on the day. He had a few different pass breakups throughout the practice session, showing a knack for getting his hands on the football.

The cornerback room is fiercely competitive in Kansas City heading into the 2023 NFL season. Should Jones continue to make plays while the team deals with injuries during the offseason, he could see himself working his way up to the depth chart as well.
