Justin Jefferson sets another NFL record vs. Bills

Another record set by the superstar wide receiver

The Minnesota Vikings struck gold when they selected wide receiver Justin Jefferson at the 22nd overall selection in the 2020 NFL draft. He has arguably been the best receiver in the National Football League during the course of his first three seasons.

Over that time, he has set numerous records and did so again versus the Buffalo Bills. When Jefferson topped 100 yards on Sunday, it was his 20th such game in his career, which set an NFL record that he held with both Randy Moss and Odell Beckham Jr.

What’s most impressive about Jefferson’s incredible start to his career is that he was able to achieve that number in just 42 games and he can still add to that number over the final eight games of the season.

The best part for Vikings fans is that Jefferson is only getting started.

Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown has quietly become one of the best bets in football

St. Brown is making bettors and fantasy managers very happy.

With a 13-yard touchdown in the first quarter of Detroit’s win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday, Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown tied the franchise record for consecutive games with a touchdown catch.

The streak, which is up to six games and dates back to Week 15 of last season, has made him one of the more reliable bets each week as an anytime touchdown scorer. He incredibly scored within seconds of his brother in Week 1, then followed that up with two scores on Sunday after catching another touchdown in the fourth quarter.

St. Brown won’t find the end zone every week (probably?), but as Jared Goff’s top target in a balanced offensive attack, he’ll remain someone to consider going forward for bettors and fantasy managers alike.

But scoring touchdowns isn’t all St. Brown does. He also has at least eight receptions in eight straight games, which is tied for an NFL record with Michael Thomas and Antonio Brown. In those eight games, he failed to score just once and more importantly for Lions fans, the team is 4-4.

And the incredible stats just keep coming.

A fourth-round pick of the Lions last year, St. Brown has exceeded any and all early expectations for his career. Now, it’s probably about time defenses start paying attention to him.

Jack Fox sets NFL marks for punting gross and net averages to start a career

Lions P Jack Fox sets NFL marks for punting gross and net averages to start a career

Jack Fox had a nice afternoon as the Detroit Lions punter in Week 1. Then again, he’s had quite a few of those in his first two-plus seasons. In fact, Fox’s first punt on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles vaulted him to the top of the NFL record book.

No punter has ever had a better start to a career than Fox.

From the Lions postgame media release,

(Fox) produced his 125th career punt. He owns the NFL’s highest gross (49.1) and net (43.4) averages through a player’s first 125 career punts in NFL history

Sunday’s performance actually lowered his averages a bit. Fox had four punts for a gross average of “just” 46.3 yards and a 43.0-yard net average, thanks in part to two punts he killed inside the Eagles’ 20-yard line.

Fox has finished 2nd and 3rd in gross punting yardage in his first two seasons. And to preempt the snide comments about Fox getting so much practice thanks to the Lions offense, he’s been outside the top 10 in punt attempts both years.

Tom Brady breaks NFL single-season record for pass completions

Tom Brady took advantage of the 17th game to set a new single-season record.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady added to his lengthy NFL résumé on Sunday afternoon against the Carolina Panthers.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion broke the league’s single-season record for pass completions when he connected with Mike Evans in the third quarter at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. The completion was Brady’s 472nd of the season, eclipsing the previous record set by Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints in 2016.

The feat took place in the Buccaneers’ 17th game of the season, whereas Brees set the previous mark in a 16-game schedule.

Brady already held many of the NFL’s career passing records, including total yardage, touchdown passes, attempts and completions.

Most pass completions in a single NFL season:

1. Tom Brady, (472), Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 2021
2. Drew Brees (471), New Orleans Saints, 2016
3. Drew Brees (468), New Orleans Saints, 2011
4. Drew Brees (456), New Orleans Saints, 2014
5. Ben Roethlisberger (452), Pittsburgh Steelers, 2018

Jaylen Waddle breaks the NFL rookie record for receptions

What a year it’s been for the Dolphins’ first-round pick.

When the Miami Dolphins traded up to select Alabama wide receiver Jaylen Waddle with the sixth overall pick, there were a lot of people questioning the decision.

Now, in the final week of the season, Waddle has broken the NFL’s rookie record for receptions of 101 that was set by Anquan Boldin in 2003. While the record does come in the league’s first year with a 17-game season, it’s impressive nonetheless.

Obviously, Waddle already owned the rookie record for receptions for the team, but he also set the franchise record for receiving yards by a rookie back in Week 16.

It’s been a great first season for the former Alabama wide receiver, and if he continues his development, his future in this league is among the brightest of any at his position.

LOOK: Jaylen Waddle has a record-setting performance on Monday Night Football

If you watched Jaylen Waddle play football at Alabama you knew that this kid was destined for greatness. His cat-like quickness and track-star speed separated him from other players at his position.

Apparently, the Miami Dolphins felt the same way about Waddle. The Fins selected Waddle with the sixth overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

Waddle has not disappointed in his rookie season. After reeling in another 10 receptions on Monday Night Football, Waddle now has 96 receptions on the season which is the second-most for a rookie in NFL history.

To go with his 96 catches, Waddle has 941 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

Waddle has become the favorite target of fellow Crimson Tide star Tua Tagovailoa who is starting to prove his doubters wrong with a strong second season in the NFL.

The Tua to Waddle connection has a chance to be one of the best in the NFL for years to come.

Waddle still has two regular-season games to go and has a great shot of breaking the rookie record of 101 receptions held by Anquon Boldin.

Bills’ Josh Allen becomes first player in NFL history with unique milestone

#Bills’ Josh Allen becomes first player in NFL history with unique milestone

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbw1j59gmjw5gdj player_id=none image=https://billswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Josh Allen has again become the only player in NFL history to accomplish a unique feat.

With his second touchdown pass of the day on Sunday’s 33-21 win against New England, Allen became the first player in league history with 100 passing touchdowns and 20 rushing touchdowns in their first four seasons.

His first TD of the day was a three-yard pass to Isaiah McKenzie, executing on fourth-and-two in the red zone near the end of the first quarter.

Allen then led an offensive charge downfield in the final two minutes of the half to hit Stefon Diggs in the end-zone on third-down, threading the needle for 12 yards and the score:

In all, he would go 30-47 with 314 yards and three touchdown tosses while leading the team in rushing with 64 yards on 12 carries. The win over the Patriots also moved the Bills back into first place in the AFC East.

With his 100 passing touchdowns in his first four seasons, the 25-year-old QB became the first player in Bills history and ninth all-time to throw as many in their first four years in the league.

In the first half of today’s game between those first and second touchdowns, he also became Buffalo’s first-ever quarterback to have multiple seasons with 350-plus completions. He also surpassed 4,000 yards passing for the season during the game, becoming the only player in Bills history with multiple 4,000-plus passing yard seasons.

He is also on pace to possibly break another Bills record. His own, that is.

Should Allen end the season with 38 or more passing touchdowns, it will best the all-time Buffalo mark he set last season, in which 37 of his 46 total scores were through the air.

Becoming the first and only player in NFL history to accomplish unique achievements has been part of Allen’s ascension early in his career.

He is also the only player in the history of the league to log three consecutive seasons of seven-or-more rushing touchdowns.

Allen is the only NFL player in history with 400-plus passing yards, 30-plus passing TD’s, and eight-plus rushing TD’s in a single season. He is also the only player in league history to have had three consecutive seasons with seven-or-more rushing touchdowns. And he was the first player in NFL history to have two games in a season with three-plus passing TD’s and 400-plus passing yards and zero interceptions with a 130-plus passer rating.

The Bills will next face the Falcons and Jets, whose defenses present the opportunity to do just that, so there may be some more records broken by Allen before the end of the regular season.

As for the QB, his focus will be solely on execution and winning those games.

Tom Brady breaks Drew Brees’ NFL record for career passing yards

Tom Brady added to his long list of NFL accomplishments by becoming the most prolific passer in league history on Sunday.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady broke the NFL record for career passing yards Sunday night, connecting with Mike Evans on a 28-yard play against his longtime former team, the New England Patriots.

The first-quarter completion put Brady’s career total at 80,359 yards, breaking the previous mark of 80,358 set by Drew Brees. Brady began the game, one of the most anticipated regular-season matchups in NFL history, with 80,291 yards.

Brady already owned the NFL record for career touchdown passes with 591 entering Sunday night’s game. He ranks second to Brees in career completions and could break that record later this season.

Brady is playing in his 22nd NFL season — his second with the Buccaneers after 20 with the Patriots. He has won seven Super Bowl championships since being selected in the sixth round, No. 199 overall, of the 2000 NFL draft out of the University of Michigan.

Brees held the record for nearly three years. He broke the previous record of 71,940, set by Peyton Manning. Brees broke that mark with the New Orleans Saints in a “Monday Night Football” game against Washington on Oct. 8, 2018.

NFL analyst predicts Derrick Henry to break long-standing NFL rushing record

Derrick Henry could have his name in the record books after 2021!

Derrick Henry is unlike any other running back in the league. His size, strength and speed are unmatched by other ball carriers. Linebackers? Maybe.

The Tennessee Titans star running back has been the NFL rushing leader for two years in a row, and it wouldn’t shock anybody if he came out of the 2021 season with a third consecutive season of the league’s most rushing yards.

The most he’s ever had in a single season was 2,027.

The NFL record for most rushing yards in a season was set by Eric Dickerson in 1984 when he ran for 2,105 yards.

Henry came within 100 of the record in 2020, and he would have had it if maybe he had one extra game.

Well, now he does as the NFL moves toward a 17-game regular season.

CBS Sports’ NFL analyst Bryan DeArdo believes Henry will likely break the record this upcoming season.

“The league’s two-time defending rushing champion is also the latest member of the 2,000-yard club. A year after running for a league-best 1,540 yards, Henry rumbled for 2,027 yards last season while also leading the NFL in touchdown runs for a second straight year,” writes DeArdo. “While he also led the NFL with 681 carries over the last two seasons, the 27-year-old Henry should be able to produce at least one more monster season in 2021. The offseason signings of receivers Julio Jones and Josh Reynolds should help spread out the offense more for Henry. Tennessee also drafted Dillon Radunz while also signing veteran Kendall Lamm to help fill their void at right tackle.

“If healthy, Henry is the hands-down favorite to win a third consecutive rushing title while also putting himself in position to break Dickerson’s record. A faster start in 2021 (of his 10 100-yard games last season, four took place in the Titans’ first eight games) would further increase Henry’s odds at making history.”

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Derrick Henry throughout his 2021 campaign.
