The NFL just announced the expansion of the practice squad for all 32 teams beginning in 2024 to include one international player, helping to create more opportunities for athletes from around the world to be identified and developed in hopes of enhancing the game globally.

The league started the International Pathway Program in 2017, allowing one player to be on the 53-man roster, and beginning in 2024, the practice squad will expand to 17 players for all 32 clubs if one player is a qualifying international player.

“The practice squad roster expansion for international players will further contribute to our goal of building a sustainable pathway to the NFL for elite global athletes, while also creating local connections with fans around the world,” said Peter O’Reilly, NFL Executive Vice President, Club Business, Major Events & International. “With the support of all 32 clubs, the NFL International Committee, the NFL Competition Committee and the NFL Players Association, we look forward to implementing this new model to benefit the game long-term and welcome more international talent into our League in the years to come.”

Thirty-seven international players have signed with NFL teams (allocated, drafted, or signed as a free agent) since the program’s inception.

There are currently 19 IPP athletes on NFL rosters, with five players having made teams active rosters – Jordan Mailata (Australia — Philadelphia Eagles), Efe Obada (UK — Washington Commanders), Jakob Johnson (Germany — Las Vegas Raiders), Sammis Reyes (Chile — Washington Commanders) and David Bada (Germany — Washington Commanders).

Philadelphia’s Mailata is the most accomplished player in the program, developing into one of the top left tackles in the NFL and signing a four-year, $64 million contract with Philadelphia, including a $10,000,000 signing bonus, $40,850,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $16,000,000.

NFL practice squad: Rules, salary and eligibility for 2023

NFL practice squad rules 2023: Everything you need to know as the Baltimore #Ravens and 31 other teams put together their 16-man practice squads via @Thacover2NFL

The Ravens are working on trimming the roster down to 53 players before today’s 4:00 p.m. deadline, and the work won’t be over after that.

Thanks to expanded rules, Baltimore will work to put together a talented and versatile 16-man practice squad.

Danny Amendola, Raheem Mostert, and Philadelphia’s Boston Scott are just a few players who have taken practice squad success and turned it into roles on NFL franchises.

With cutdown day finally here, we’ve provided you with the NFL practice squad rules and everything you need to know.

NFL practice squad rules and what they mean for the Cowboys

The Cowboys use their practice squad to their advantage, so here’s an explainer of how things work in the modern NFL. | From @ReidDHanson

So, your most beloved NFL team just cut your own personnel favorite fringe player. What will it take for that player to still stick around Dallas? What must the Cowboys do to fill out their practice squad with the best and brightest young athletes?

The answers all lie within.

As the clock ticked 4 P.M. on the eastern seaboard, the Cowboys made official their first 53-man roster, per league requirements. Tough decisions were made, and good players were cut loose as the strategy game known as cut-day unfolded.

As with previous seasons, the 2023 Cowboys made some interesting moves. In this case, they cut their only long snapper, Trent Sieg, as well as their long-time special teams ace, C.J. Goodwin. As vested veterans, both players are expected to re-join the regular roster once Dallas bumps the injured Nahshon Wright and Matt Waletzko to IR.

In order to return from IR a player must first be on the regular roster for at least a day. Temporarily giving Wright and Waletzko a spot allows Dallas to bring them back, unlike Josh Ball who was placed on IR before being awarded a roster spot, thus ending his season.

This massaging of the roster is one of many changes Cowboys fans can expect between cut-down day and kickoff in Week 1.

Former Longhorn Shane Buechele clears waivers, lands on Chiefs practice squad

Shane Buechele ends up on the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad.

One day after being waived by the Kansas City Chiefs, former Texas quarterback Shane Buechele has been signed to the Chiefs practice squad.

Buechele, who started his collegiate career at Texas and finished at SMU, had a very solid college tenure that saw him throw for over 11,000 yards with two 3,000-yard passing seasons and 87 touchdown passes.

After surprisingly not being claimed on waivers by another team, it was announced via Twitter by the KC Star’s Herbie Teope on Wednesday that Buechele would indeed land on the Chiefs practice squad.

He found his success at SMU after he lost the starting job at Texas to now Indianapolis Colts quarterback Sam Ehlinger. After declaring for the 2021 NFL draft, Buechele did not hear his name called, but was considered a priority undrafted free agent shortly after the draft concluded. He eventually chose to sign with the Chiefs.

Buechele preformed quite well this preseason for the Chiefs, throwing for 422 yards, completing 67% of his passes, and three touchdown passes. It wasn’t quite enough, as it appears the Chiefs are content with having just two quarterbacks on the active roster in Chad Henne and Patrick Mahomes.

While Buechele was never going to replace Mahomes by any means, he did look like he was playing well enough to possibly be the third quarterback on the roster. However, he is getting a shot to be a professional quarterback in a different capacity, and is always one play away from being on the 53-man roster.

Falcons sign CB Tyler Hall to practice squad, release DE Austin Edwards

The Atlanta Falcons are tweaking their 16-man practice squad for the third consecutive day, signing cornerback Tyler Hall on Friday morning and releasing DE Austin Edwards to make room.

The Atlanta Falcons are tweaking their 16-man practice squad for the third consecutive day, signing cornerback Tyler Hall on Friday morning and releasing DE Austin Edwards to make room. Both players signed with the Falcons as undrafted free agents following the draft.

Hall, a standout from Wyoming, has drawn praise from the Falcons coaching staff, and it’s not surprising to see him return to the team.

As for Edwards, who comes from little Ferris State college in Michigan, he lasted longer than many other highly-regarded prospects, and some draft picks. Don’t be surprised to see him return to Atlanta at some point.

The Falcons announced their four protected practice squad players this week, keeping QB Kurt Benkert, LB Edmond Robinson, P Cameron Nizialek and WR Chris Rowland.

Make sure to check out our practice squad tracker to stay up to date on each move the team makes.

The Atlanta Falcons continue to tweak their 16-man practice squad as the team prepares for a Week 3 matchup with the Chicago Bears.

On Tuesday, the Falcons announced they were terminating the contracts of QB Kyle Lauletta, CB Tyler Hall and DT David Moa.

Lauletta was a fourth-round pick in the 2018 draft, while both Hall and Moa were undrafted free agents. Hall signed with Atlanta shortly after the draft and Moa signed last week.

This leaves three practice squad spots available for the team to add another offensive lineman and potentially a cornerback. Keep track of each move with our Falcons practice squad tracker.
