Chiefs Week 1 victory over the Ravens set record as the most-watched NFL kickoff game

Kansas City #Chiefs Week 1 victory over the Baltimore #Ravens set record as the most-watched NFL kickoff game | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs maintain their dominance beyond the football field. The NFL kickoff victory over the Baltimore Ravens set a new television ratings record for the annual game.

According to NBC Sports, the game had an average audience of 28.9 million, surpassing the 27.6 million who watched the New England Patriots defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the network’s 2015 opener. The audience peaked at 33 million in the second quarter, as the 20-minute weather delay at Arrowhead Stadium to start the game didn’t affect the numbers and turn away viewers.

The rating is five percent higher than last season’s opener against the Detroit Lions. The Chiefs fell short in that game 21-20 and were without Pro Bowlers Travis Kelce due to injury and Chris Jones because of his contract holdout.

Last Thursday’s contest almost went into overtime, as the Ravens were a toe away from scoring the game-tying touchdown with no time remaining in regulation. Denver, St. Louis, Norfolk, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Austin, Minneapolis, Detroit, and Cleveland were among the top markets, along with the expected ratings from Baltimore and Kansas City.

Commanders special teams coach Larry Izzo talks challenge of the new kickoff rules

Larry Izzo discusses the new kickoff rule.

Larry Izzo was an undrafted, undersized linebacker when he entered the NFL in 1996. He would go on to have a 14-year playing career, win four Super Bowls, and be named to the Pro Bowl three times.

In the late 1990s and throughout the 2010s, Izzo was regarded as the NFL’s preeminent special-teams player. Shortly after his playing career ended, Izzo jumped into coaching. After spending the past six seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, Izzo came to Washington as Dan Quinn’s special teams coach.

In addition to coaching a new team, there was a significant rule change involving special teams this offseason.

Here’s a lengthy explanation of the new rule from the NFL.

How is Izzo managing to coach his new team while adjusting to the new rule?

“That’s one thing that we’re working through on a daily basis here, 24/7, is to try to try to figure this play out as fast as we can,” Izzo said this week, per Zach Selby of commanders.com. “We look at it as a little bit of a race against time. You’re competing against all the other teams here that are in the same boat.

The new rules could also impact Washington’s roster moves. The purpose of the new kickoff rule—which came from the XFL (now UFL)—was to decrease injuries while increasing the number of returns.

The Commanders will need a punt returner and someone who can return kicks, too. You can add that to Izzo’s list this summer.

Videos show how weird the new NFL kickoff rules will make the play look in 2024

This looks so weird.

Kickoffs in the NFL are going to look VERY different in 2024, and if the play works this season, it might be a permanent change.

Among the rule changes made for this year is something that came from the XFL: modified kickoff rules in which kickers are rewarded for accuracy and the rest of the players can’t move until the kick is received or it hits the ground in what’s called “the landing zone.”

If you’re wondering what it’ll all look like? There’s video of it from the XFL, which gives you a taste for the play that’ll have you glued to your screen:

Chiefs TE Travis Kelce set to miss first game since 2014

#Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is set to miss his first game since 2014 after injuring his knee at practice on Tuesday.

Travis Kelce has been a dominant force for the Kansas City Chiefs offense for the better part of a decade. His steady presence has helped buoy the Chiefs through thick and thin, and his run of exceptional play has garnered him nearly endless accolades over the course of his career.

A third-round pick in Kansas City’s first draft class of the Andy Reid era, Kelce missed all of his rookie season due to an injury he sustained as a collegian at the University of Cincinnati. Since recovering from the ailment suffered as a Bearcat, Kelce has never missed a game for the Chiefs, until today.

While the injury he sustained in practice is only expected to be a temporary setback, Kelce’s impressive ironman streak will be briefly paused when Kansas City faces Detroit tonight. The Chiefs called up tight end Matt Bushman from the practice squad early on Thursday to compensate for the loss of Kelce.

Fans should expect huge contributions from Noah Gray and Blake Bell in Kelce’s absence and may want to adjust their fantasy football lineups to reflect the star tight end’s status ahead of the Chiefs’ 7:20 p.m. kickoff at Arrowhead Stadium.

Peter Schrager picks Chiefs to win Super Bowl LVIII ahead of NFL kickoff on Thursday

Acclaimed analyst Peter Schrager predicted that the #Chiefs would win Super Bowl LVIII next February.

As if the expectations for the Kansas City Chiefs couldn’t get any higher, writers are already predicting the team to win Super Bowl LVIII ahead of Thursday night’s NFL kickoff.

Peter Schrager of FoxSports.com and Good Morning Football is the latest to pick Kansas City to pull off the back-to-back championship run after revealing his predictions on Thursday morning.

As part of his prediction, Schrager chose the San Francisco 49ers to be the Chiefs’ opponent for the championship matchup, guessing that the final score would be 34-28 in Kansas City’s favor and that the game would feature a late pick-six by second-year cornerback Trent McDuffie.

Chiefs fans will certainly hope that his forecast holds true, but with a long season ahead, anything could happen. Nonetheless, the fact that national writers are already piling on to the Chiefs’ sky-high expectations is a good indication that the media doesn’t think Kansas City has regressed since winning Super Bowl LVII in February.

The Bills and Josh Allen blew out the Rams despite a sloppy effort, and might be even better than we thought

The Bills didn’t play their best and still clocked the Rams. The NFL should be terrified.

All offseason, the Bills were told they were special. They had a special quarterback, Josh Allen. They had special weapons, like Stefon Diggs. And they had special, battle-tested veterans joining the fray, such as Von Miller. Buffalo was a team of destiny and would show it this season.

But at a certain point, you have to put pen to paper. If the Bills’ uneven but decisive 31-10 opening season laugher win against the Rams Thursday night was any indication of their fortunes in 2022, all systems remain full throttle in Western New York.

Let’s be frank: Buffalo didn’t play its best game against the defending Super Bowl champions at the start of their quest to “burn it all.” Far from it. For a squad that fancies itself a relentless juggernaut, the Bills left more than a few yards, catches, possessions, and points on the board than you’d expect.

After a dominant first possession capped by a magical playoff connection, you would’ve thought Buffalo was about to drop 50-plus points on the last team to lift the Lombardi Trophy. They probably should’ve! Yet, on their four other first-half drives, Buffalo turned the ball over three times and had a total of 124 yards on 22 plays. The Rams were in the mirror, were closer than they appeared, and these were not the same Bills everyone expected to circle the wagons. Instead, they resembled an average team on the brink of a backbreaking mistake at any moment.

When even the latest model of the Terminator, aka Allen, is contributing to the follies with multiple picks, then it might be time to pack it up and go home:

As we’ve seen over the last couple of years, these are not the same Buffalo Bills. After their meaningful learning experiences, this is a team ready for the Big Stage. When it was time to turn on the afterburners to pull away from what turned out to be the definitively inferior Rams, the Bills wasted no steps.

To the shock of no one, Allen lit the fuse for the Bills. Because, of course, he did. On a crucial third-and-seven to begin the second half, Allen took off for the down marker. Rams’ defensive back Nick Scott, the poor soul, was in Allen’s way. In one of the more disrespectful stiff arms you’ll see on a national stage, the QB would simply not be denied.

Third down, and you need seven? Allen gets you that and a little more — eight yards — on a possession that ended with seven points and a 17-10 lead.

Then, with the Rams still technically within a two-score striking distance early in the fourth quarter, the Bills decided to drop the hammer. There are few better ways to do so than by Allen launching a 53-yard laser to Stefon Diggs just past the outstretched arms of the all-world Jalen Ramsey:

Ballgame. See you later, everyone. Maybe in February? (Well, Buffalo anyway.)

All told, the Bills seemingly would not get out of their own way early on in Los Angeles. On a night that likely carried with it a lot of jitters, that’s understandable. But few teams, if any others, would settle themselves down after shooting themselves in the foot multiple times.

The Bills did.

Despite his two picks, Allen set a Bills’ franchise record with an 83.9  completion percentage in a single game. Mind you, that’s while repeatedly launching bombs with a robust 9.59 yards gained per attempt. Allen’s turnovers, or his teammates’, may as well have never happened. Honestly, since the Rams technically never forced the Bills to punt, I’m all for ignoring those giveaways if the motion comes to pass.

But we knew Allen was great. We knew Allen would eventually find a path to a clutch play or four. What should be the Bills’ real cherry on top is a dominant defensive performance led by Von Miller (three tackles-for-loss, two sacks, two QB hits). Not only did Miller and Co. turn Matthew Stafford into a turnover pumpkin (three picks), they made sure he never had enough time to find any consistently open throwing lanes by bringing him to the turf seven times.

Such a feat was managed with patience. Powered by the depth of a defensive line that seems to go eight strong, the Bills didn’t blitz Stafford once:

The Bills had pro football’s No. 1 ranked defense by Football Outsiders’ DVOA last season. Based on their humbling performance at the expense of the Rams, their top unit might actually even be better. It’s the kind of unit that might emphatically close the door a few times in some playoff games this winter.

The Bills did not play as well as they are capable of against the Rams. What’s absurd (and a little disturbing, if you’re an upcoming opponent) is they won by three touchdowns anyway. The Super Bowl 57 favorite essentially used the Super Bowl incumbent as a de facto preseason game to tune up for the rest of the year. Huh. Maybe Buffalo really does have a team of destiny.

Josh Allen absolutely tossed a Rams DB with a vicious stiff arm and NFL fans loved it

Allen continues to be an open-field MONSTER!

Josh Allen became the cornerstone of a Super Bowl contender not only because he has a rocket arm. Whenever he finds a seam in the open field, the Bills’ superstar takes full advantage. Even if his running lane is tiny by most players’ standards — Allen makes his own space.

We saw the perfect example of Allen, the quarterback, and Allen, the freight train, against the Rams in the NFL opener on Thursday night. After already rekindling some playoff magic with a favorite target earlier in the night, Allen needed to make something happen on a second-half third and long.

With the Rams hot on the Bills’ trail, it became clear pretty quickly that no one, especially if they tried to tackle him one-on-one, was going to stop Allen. Just ask poor Nick Scott, the first victim of a powerful Allen stiff arm in the 2022 season:

Holy cow. Let’s see another angle of that, shall we?

I’m speechless. Look at the way Allen’s holding the ball so casually. He’s not concerned at all about Scott making a play or stopping his progress. Believe me: That is a quarterback positively locked in on the first-down marker and a lot more.

NFL fans had lots of theories about Odell Beckham Jr. after he showed up at Rams’ opener

It sure seems like Beckham Jr. has picked home for the near future!

Since the end of the Rams’ win in Super Bowl 57 in February, speculation has run rampant about where Odell Beckham Jr. would call his NFL home in the future. Aside from cryptic hints, allusions, references, and short posts over social media platforms, the free agent playmaker — coming off a torn ACL — has basically kept his upcoming playing status hush.

During the Rams’ opener against the Bills (-2.5), Beckham Jr. might have given away his hand. As L.A. celebrated its Super Bowl win with some pregame festivities, Beckham Jr. made a joyful appearance celebrating with his former (or future?) teammates on the field.

He even reunited with Cooper Kupp and Andrew Whitworth!

The regular season is just a few days away for all other 30 teams, and Beckham Jr. still doesn’t have a new deal. If he’s making an imminent decision, this might have the blue and gold look of a guy who’s decided to stay in Southern California.

Seahawks and Mariners showing each other some love

Seattle’s two most prominent professional teams are giving each other plenty of acknowledgement online.

Seahawks football is right around the corner with an appointment against the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football, but baseball is the talk of the town in the Emerald City right now. The Seahawks’ neighbors to the south of Lumen Field, the Mariners, are in the midst of one of their best seasons in the last 20 years. Seattle’s professional teams have always had a supportive bond, and right now, that bond is on full display.

It started on when Seahawks tight end Will Dissly ended his press conference with an important announcement. Seattle’s athletes have never been shy about dipping their toes into the political scene, and Dissly took the time for a crucial midterm election update.

In today’s divided political climate, Mitch Haniger might be one of the few who can garner true bipartisan support, especially with his high caliber of play. Since returning from injury, Haniger has resumed his typical production, including hitting a walk-off single to defeat the Cleveland Guardians last weekend.

Of course, what true-to-the-blue Seattle fan could vote against a man wearing such a stylish Seahawks shirt.

Following the Mariners’ sweep of the Detroit Tigers, the team boarded the plane with a theme of football jerseys. Haniger was not alone in his support for the Seahawks. Pitcher Matt Boyd, who grew up in the Seattle area, made his debut for the Mariners and can be seen wearing the retro Steve Largent jersey.

Additionally, fellow Seattle-kid Jake Lamb is behind Haniger wearing another retro Seahawks look.

But of course, the player who will catch the eye of all the 12’s is most assuredly rookie phenom Julio Rodriguez wearing a DK Metcalf jersey.

This did not go unnoticed by the Seahawks star receiver, who shared support for the centerfielder on his Instagram story.

There is little doubt the two biggest stars in the Seattle sports landscape are DK Metcalf and Julio Rodriguez. With both of them signing incredibly lucrative extensions this summer, the 12th Man will have plenty of opportunities to watch both players dominate their respective sports for years to come.

NFL Network gives update on Odell Beckham’s status

NFL Network provides an update on Odell Beckham’s free agency

As the NFL season grows closer, former LSU wideout [autotag]Odell Beckham Jr[/autotag] is still without a home.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network recently had an update on Beckham’s status.

Rapoport pointed out how Beckham is still recovering from an ACL and could be exercising patience. Beckham might not be able to play early in the year anyway, so why not take more time to recover?

It doesn’t seem like Beckham is signing anytime soon. This would give Beckham a chance to join a contender down the stretch in good health.

The Rams have maintained interest, but there hasn’t been much smoke around other teams.

Teams like the Cowboys, Titans, or Colts could use his services. All three of those teams expect to contend but need some more depth at wide receiver.

In 14 games last year, Beckham caught 44 passes for 537 yards. He really shined in the postseason, where he had 288 yards and a couple of touchdowns.

That included a 113-yard performance in the NFC Championship game. In the Super Bowl, he put the Rams up 7-0 with a first-quarter touchdown.

In his eight NFL seasons, Beckham has eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark on five occasions and that total could be even higher if it weren’t for injuries.

Beckham is just 29 and could be an important part of an offense this year.
