LOOK: Kyle Pitts, Falcons rookies get their uniforms

It took longer than expected, but the Atlanta Falcons finally finished signing their nine-player rookie class last week. The team’s Twitter account shared some images of the rookies, including first-round pick Kyle Pitts, donning the Falcons’ all-black uniforms.

It took longer than expected, but the Atlanta Falcons finally finished signing their nine-player draft class last week. First-round pick Kyle Pitts is expected to make a big impact as the team adjusts to life without Julio Jones. The Falcons’ second and third-round picks, safety Richie Grant and guard Jalen Mayfield, have a chance to start this season.

We may be in the deadest period of the entire offseason, but Atlanta’s team Twitter account gave fans something to get excited over on Tuesday afternoon when it released images of this year’s draft class donning the Falcons’ all-black uniforms.

With the rookie class under contract, the Falcons do have some money to potentially add a free agent or two. As we pointed out last week, Atlanta has over $8 million in cap space, but the team may benefit from saving it and trying to get out of cap hell in 2022 and beyond.

Falcons rookie TE Kyle Pitts to wear No. 8

Falcons rookie Kyle Pitts takes advantage of the new NFL jersey number rule and selects No. 8.

The Falcons used their No. 4 overall selection Thursday night to draft Florida tight end Kyle Pitts. While the pick wasn’t a total surprise, as Pitts was the running favorite, we didn’t know what number he would wear in the NFL until Friday morning when the team announced it over Twitter.

Pitts will take advantage of the new single-digit rule and wear No. 8. The NFL’s relaxed its jersey number restrictions during this offseason, expanding number options for the majority of skill position players.

Pitts wore No. 84 at Florida — the same number as Falcons legend Roddy White.Β  However, Atlanta’s new kick returner, WR/RBCordarrelle Patterson, took the No. 84 when he signed with the team a few weeks ago. Patterson has his own clothing line associated with the No. 84, so that wasn’t much of a surprise either.

Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley had the option go back to the No. 3 he wore at Alabama but decided against it. Ridley said he’d wear No. 18 “til the end” over Twitter.

Texans S Justin Reid to stay with No. 20, not wear old Stanford jersey number

The NFL expanded the numbers on uniforms. However, don’t expect Houston Texans safety Justin Reid to change his anytime soon.

The NFL approved a measure to expand the jersey numbers for skill positions.

Running backs, receivers, and tight ends get to pick from the expanded jersey field of one through 49 and also 88 through 89.

Linebackers get to pick one through 59 along with 90 through 99.

Defensive backs have also had their jersey numbers expanded from one through 49.

There is some speculation that some Houston Texans players will change their jersey numbers. However, don’t include safety Justin Reid in that number. The fourth-year safety from Stanford replied to a tweet on Wednesday when a fan asked if he would bring back his old college number.

“Nahh,” Reid replied. “20 all the way.”

The former Stanford Cardinal sported the number eight throughout his collegiate playing days. After the Texans drafted Reid with the No. 68 overall pick in Round 3 of the 2018 NFL draft, their first selection of the draft, he chose the number 38 throughout the offseason program and training camp. At the end of preseason, he switched to number 20, and it has become his identity as a pro since.

Brandon Aiyuk not eager to move back to college jersey number

Brandon Aiyuk wore No. 2 at Arizona State. He appears content with staying in No. 11 with the San Francisco 49ers.

While some 49ers players took to the internet Wednesday to express excitement over the NFL’s relaxed regulations on which jersey numbers can be worn by which positions, Brandon Aiyuk took the opposite approach.

Aiyuk played his college football at Arizona State. Their football team’s Twitter account posted a tweet Wednesday that pondered whether Aiyuk would move back to the No. 2 that he wore in college. The tweet was complete with an edited photo of Aiyuk in a No. 2 49ers jersey.

The receiver responded with a brief, but pointed tweet indicating he’s happy with the No. 11 jersey he wore during his successful rookie campaign in San Francisco.

If Aiyuk did want No. 2, he’d have a little bit of a hurdle to clear with quarterback Josh Rosen currently occupying that jersey.

However, Aiyuk appears content to roll with the No. 11 he wore while racking up 60 catches for 748 yards and five touchdowns in 12 games as a rookie.

All of this is great news for fullback Kyle Juszczyk. The Harvard alum tweeted a photo of himself in college donning a No. 2 jersey and a thinking emoji for the caption.

If Aiyuk doesn’t want No. 2, the 49ers may have a player who does.
