Ian Rapoport expects NFL Draft top 10 filled with QBs, OT’s which would leave some elite talent for Raiders

Ian Rapoport expects NFL Draft top 10 filled with QBs, OT’s which would leave some elite talent for Raiders

Although the draft figures to have plenty of surprises in store as if right now, the Raiders aren’t expected to take a quarterback or an offensive tackle with their first pick at No. 12 overall.

But a lot of teams ahead of them certainly will be looking at those positions. Just how many go in the top ten is the question and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport thinks the top ten will be almost exclusively made up of QB’s and OT’s.

“One thing I’m pretty sure about is the top ten of the draft is going to be filled with quarterbacks and offensive linemen,” Rapoport said on NFL Now.

Rapoport mentions offensive tackles Tristan Wirfs, Jedrick Wills, Mekhi Becton, Andrew Thomas, adding, “It is pretty safe to say that these tackles are going to go much higher than they have in previous drafts.”

There are expected to be at least three quarterbacks taken with Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, and Justin Herbert leading the way. That is seven prospects, not ten. Even so, Rapoport went as far as to say he “wouldn’t be surprised if the whole top ten is just quarterbacks and O-linemen.”

His statement suggests there could be more than the three QBs taken in the top ten. Other QBs who have been discussed include Utah State’s Jordan Love and Washington’s Jacob Eason. Another OT considered a first-round product is Houston’s Josh Jones.

An entire top ten of quarterbacks and offensive tackles would indeed be a shocker, especially when you consider the defensive talent at the top of this draft.

Ohio State edge rusher Chase Young is considered perhaps the best prospect in this draft period. Others who have been pegged as top ten picks include Young’s teammate Jeff Okudah, Auburn defensive lineman Derrick Brown, and Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons.

If even a single QB or tackle other than the seven above go in the top ten, it would mean one of these elite defenders will be on the board when the Raiders pick at No. 12.

As it stands, they could still have their pick of any of the best receivers in this draft. In that instance, they would have to decide if they want the best defender at one of several key positions in this draft or the best wide receiver.

That’s a good problem to have.

PFF releases RB superlatives for 2020 NFL Draft class: D’Andre Swift earns one

Pro Football Focus handed out running back superlatives for the 2020 NFL Draft class, and Georgia football RB D’Andre Swift earned one.

PFF (Pro Football Focus) recently released superlatives for the 2020 NFL Draft class’ running backs.

Georgia’s D’Andre Swift was named as the best receiver in the draft class.

In Swift’s three-year career at Georgia, he caught 73 passes for 666 yards and five touchdowns averaging 9.1 yards per catch.

PFF wrote:

“Swift is the modern do-it-all running back. His ability to torch linebackers one-on-one as a route-runner is what we here at PFF covet more than any other skill at the position.”

A few of the other superlatives given out were “best between the tackles,” which was awarded to Wisconsin’s record-breaking back Jonathon Taylor. “Best home-run threat” was given to Louisiana’s Raymond Calais and “most elusive” went to Utah’s Zack Moss.

On top of best receiver, I believe Swift deserved an honorable mention as most elusive as well — just ask any of the SEC schools how hard it is to tackle #7.

Swift’s versatility with and without the ball in his hands is what makes him so special compared to other tailbacks. Not only can he run you over, but he can also blow past you with his speed and he has one of the nastiest arsenals of jukes, spins and cuts that you’ll see from a college running back. But what really sets him apart is his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield and make things happen.

Most mock drafts have Swift going late in the first or early second round in this year’s NFL draft.

If he is chosen in the first round, he will be the third UGA running back selected in the first round (Gurley, Michel) and the fourth Georgia back selected overall (Chubb) in the last five years.

NFL Draft: Notre Dame’s Kmet Runaway Favorite to be First Tight End Taken

We’ve long been on-board with Notre Dame’s Kmet as the best tight end prospect in the nation since October but others took their time to join us in that thinking.  One outlet that does see him the same way as us is BetMGM.

Will someone jump up and grab Cole Kmet at the end of the first round next Thursday as the NFL Draft kicks off?  That remains to be seen but we are getting what appears to be clarity on how much better of a prospect he’s viewed as compared to the rest of the class.

We’ve long been on-board with Notre Dame’s Kmet as the best tight end prospect in the nation since October but others took their time to join us in that thinking.  One outlet that does see him the same way as us is BetMGM.

BetMGM lists Kmet as a runaway favorite to be the first tight end off the board as they list him as a -286 moneyline favorite, or almost 1:3 odds.  For comparison, Adam Trautman of Dayton checks in with the second best odds at 7:1.  Brycen Hopkins of Purdue is 9:1 and Thaddeus Moss of LSU closest the top four at 11:1.

Kmet is far from a perfect tight end prospect as Jeff Feyerer wrote about a week or so ago.  Compared to the rest of the class though he’s the best tight end prospect in this class and if he can stay on the field, has potential to do some work in the NFL.

Several prospects of note to Broncos fans will participate in the draft

Several big-name prospects will participate in the NFL draft from their homes.

Top prospects won’t “attend” the NFL draft this year because the event will be held in a virtual format due to COVID-19. That doesn’t mean prospects won’t be able to participate at all, though.

The league announced last week that 58 prospects will participate in the draft — cameras will be set up in their homes for live look-ins and interviews.

Of note to Broncos fans, some of the top wide receiver, cornerback and offensive line prospects are among the prospects participating this year.

  • WR: Jerry Jeudy, CeeDee Lamb, Henry Ruggs III, Brandon Aiyuk, Chase Claypool, Tee Higgins, Justin Jefferson, Denzel Mims, Jalen Reagor, Laviska Shenault
  • CB: Jeff Okudah, C.J. Henderson, AJ Terrell, Kristian Fulton, Trevon Diggs, Jaylon Johnson
  • OL: Tristan Wirfs, Andrew Thomas, Mekhi Becton, Jedrick Wills, Ezra Cleveland, Lloyd Cushenberry, Josh Jones, Austin Jackson, Cesar Ruiz, Prince Tega Wanogho

Most draft pundits seem to agree that wide receiver, cornerback and offensive line are Denver’s three biggest positions of need in this year’s draft. With that being the case, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Broncos select several players listed above who will be participating in the draft from their homes.

Kansas City Chiefs post-free agency mock draft

Now that the free agency period has slowed, who could the Kansas City Chiefs target come draft day?

Brett Veach’s approach to the 2020 free agency period was keeping as many players together from their 2019 roster as possible. The general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs was successful, with all of the major contributors on the Super Bowl LIV-winning squad returning for at least one more year.

It is great to see so many familiar faces coming back for a run at a Super Bowl repeat but what does that mean for the 2020 NFL Draft and years to come? Well, with quite a few prominent players being probable cap casualties in 2021, Veach should look ahead in the upcoming draft in preparation for the eventual departures.

Maria Lysaker-USA TODAY Sports

Round 1, Pick 32 – Houston OT Josh Jones

Eric Fisher is one of those staples on the Kansas City offensive line that could be a cap casualty in 2021. The 2013 number one overall selection is set to hit free agency in 2022 but carries over $14.5 million in cap space commitments in 2021 with only three million in dead money. We could possibly see a restructure/extension to keep him around but the team could prioritize other players.

Jones has the potential to be a top-20 talent in most draft classes, but with such a loaded OT class, he could fall to the Chiefs at 32. He has good size and some really nice traits but he needs refinement in his technique. Jones could push Fisher for playing time and might even unseat the incumbent, but Kansas City doesn’t need to be in a hurry with this pick.

The Athletic’s latest NFL mock draft sees two first-round Michigan picks

Dane Brugler released his fifth mock draft, a full seven-rounds, and saw 8 Wolverines selected, including two in the first-round.

[jwplayer QEyQIBgR-XNcErKyb]

This is the first time we’ve seen this in 2020 mock drafts, but the theme is consistent with recent years when Michigan has put several players into the NFL.

In 2016, when Michigan led all of college football with 11 NFL draft picks, Taco Charlton and Jabrill Peppers were both selected in the first-round. In 2019, the Wolverines put Devin Bush Jr. and Rashan Gary into the league with the No. 10 and No. 12 picks, respectively.

According to The Athletic’s Dane Brugler in his NFL mock draft 5.0 ($), the maize and blue again had two first-round selections.

While many have prognosticated that early entrant, center Cesar Ruiz, would sneak into the tail end first-round, Brugler sees things similarly, but also says another Michigan teammate will join him, albeit several picks earlier.

It’s part of a seven-round mock that sees eight Wolverines selected, with a few changes compared to some of the usual suspects we’ve seen picked in other multiple-round mocks.

  • No. 27 (1) – Josh Uche – Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks are always a wild card on draft day so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a stunner here like Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor. But I’m going with Uche, who gives Seattle an explosive edge threat and a player just scratching the surface of his ability.

  • No. 31 (1) – Cesar Ruiz – San Francisco 49ers

With the 49ers not picking again until the fifth round, good bet they look to trade back (maybe for a team looking to trade up for Jordan Love?). But if they stay put, upgrading the interior offensive line is on the priority list and Ruiz has big upside as a center-guard.

  • No. 107 (4) – Ben Bredeson – Cincinnati Bengals
  • No. 115 (4) – Donovan Peoples-Jones – Cleveland Browns
  • No. 161 (5) – Josh Metellus – Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • No. 188 (6) – Jon Runyan Jr. – Buffalo Bills (from Cleveland)
  • No. 205 (6) – Michael Onwenu – Minnesota Vikings
  • No. 245 (7) – Sean McKeon – San Francisco 49ers

This is the first mock draft from a major publication that includes Michael Onwenu and Sean McKeon and we’ve found very few that have had Josh Metellus — though none this high. But it’s rare that we haven’t seen VIPER Khaleke Hudson, who had a solid showing in the NFL Scouting Combine, be selected in a seven-round mock, and we’d anticipate that CB Lavert Hill and DE Mike Danna could also be picks.

There has been ample speculation in recent weeks that former five-star QB Shea Patterson could go undrafted, such as this from Rivals’ Mike Farrell:

Overview: Patterson played in only 10 games over two seasons at Ole Miss as he dealt with injuries and then he transferred to Michigan to re-spark his career. Rated as the third-best prospect in the 2016 class, Patterson posted good numbers in Ann Arbor but he hardly showed elite passing ability and there’s a decent possibility that he will go undrafted. He finished his college career with 8,800 passing yards with 68 touchdowns and 27 interceptions, only 52 fewer yards than Joe Burrow in two fewer games. An early Arizona pledge who then ended up at Ole Miss, only Rashan Gary and Dexter Lawrence were ranked higher than Patterson in the 2016 class.

Farrell’s take: Patterson had everything you wanted in a quarterback coming out of high school. He was mobile, his arm strength was solid and he had that moxie and confidence you want. It never really showed consistently on the field at either Ole Miss or Michigan, and that’s surprising. Size was the main question about him in high school, but now there are many more questions surrounding him.

The 2020 NFL Draft is slated to begin virtually on April 23.

Broncos had pre-draft call with CB Kindle Vildor

The Broncos are continuing to look at cornerback prospects entering the NFL draft.

The Denver Broncos had a pre-draft video call with Georgia Southern cornerback Kindle Vildor, according to Steelers Depot’s Daniel Valente.

Vildor (5-10, 191 pounds) ran a 40-yard dash in 4.44 seconds and bench-pressed 225 pounds 22 times at the combine earlier this offseason. NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein says the cornerback “has the ability to challenge for a CB4/CB5 spot for man-cover defenses.”

Zierlein was not impressed with Vildor’s tackling, which probably wouldn’t make him a good fit for Vic Fangio’s defense in Denver.

During his final three years with the Eagles, Vildor totaled 94 tackles, one sack, nine interceptions, one forced fumble and 25 pass breakups. He would likely compete for a rotational job if selected by the Broncos later this month.

Vildor is the 22nd-best cornerback in this year’s class, according to Luke Easterling’s post-combine rankings on Draft Wire.

Denver will have 10 picks to use in the NFL draft (April 23-25) and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the team add multiple cornerbacks.

2020 NFL Draft Profile: Colorado State S Jamal Hicks

The CSU safety has the best chance of any Ram to get drafted this year

Contact/Follow @MattK_FS & @MWCwire

Will the Rams have another player drafted?

The first team All-Mountain West safety represents the Colorado State Rams best chance at getting a player drafted in this years NFL draft. The question is whether or not that happens.

There isn’t much chatter about any of the Rams, but a number of pro scouts did show up for the Rams pro day. One of the few pro days to be held before the suspension of them. Hicks showed he had average to above average skills in the pro day drills, but he felt he could’ve done better according to the Fort Collins Coloradoan.

Courtesy of @MathBomb

Strengths

Hicks is a rangy, playmaking safety who isn’t afraid to get involved in the running game. In 2019, he was the second leading tackler in the Mountain West with 117 total tackles. He also finished with one and a half sack, which shows his willingness to do what is asked of him.

Hicks shows good pre-snap read coverage. Where he uses his vision and recognition to make a quick decision and gets an early jump on a decent number of players.

His high tackle number can be attributed to his ability to break down in the open field and make the 1-on-1 tackle.

Weakness

As you can see on the RAS card above, Jamal Hicks is not the most agile safety, which is why he thrives when the ball is in front of him or he is allowed to play in space.

When Hicks is asked to match up man on man, he struggles. He often gets beaten to the route when he is in a man-on-man situation. Hicks often gets beat deep when pressed into a man situation.

Draft Prediction

Absolutely no one, besides Mountain West Wire, is talking about the possibility of Hicks getting drafted. But his ability to play the field and play the running game should get him at least an invite to camp.
