Bold prediction has Justin Jefferson with 2,000 receiving yards

After gaining 1,809 yards in 2022, NFL.com’s Adam Schein believes Justin Jefferson will set an NFL record in 2023.

After a historic season in 2022, Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson had a historically successful season, but came short of the 2,000 yard mark. Could he get there in 2023? NFL.com’s Adam Schein believes so and proclaimed it as one of his nine bold predictions for the 2023 season.

No wide receiver has ever hit 2K. Calvin Johnson’s come the closest, posting an NFL-record 1,964 yards in 2012. Nine years later, Cooper Kupp reached 1,947 yards. In 2023, Jefferson makes history.

Shoot, it’s just the natural progression of Jefferson’s NFL production, from 1,400 yards in Year 1 to 1,616 yards in Year 2 to 1,809 yards last season. To reach 2,000, he needs to average just under 118 yards over 17 games. Jefferson is the kind of unstoppable force who can make that happen, especially in Year 2 of Kevin O’Connell’s offense. And his new WR running mate in Jordan Addison — Minnesota’s first-round pick in April — will help the cause by commanding more attention than the Vikings’ complementary targets last season.

The Griddy will be on full display in 2023, with No. 18 dancing his way into the record books.

Jefferson has a real chance to get the record. Based off of his statistical growth over his first three season, Jefferson is on pace to have 2,005 yards receiving after having 1,400, 1,616 and 1,809 in his first three seasons, respectively. The addition of Jordan Addison and a full season of T.J. Hockenson will help make that easier.

Geno Smith tops list of NFL’s best deep throwers, Russell Wilson still top 10

The Seahawks traded away one of the greatest deep passers in NFL history last year and they somehow wound up with an upgrade in this part of the game.

The Seahawks traded away one of the greatest deep passers in NFL history last year and they somehow wound up with an upgrade in this part of the game. While he wasn’t perfect, Geno Smith did a lot of things well on the field in 2022. At the top of the list was his aggressiveness and high accuracy throwing the deep ball (passes of 20 air-yards or more).

Recently Nick Shook at NFL.com, made a list of the top 10 deep throwers in the league last year and Smith came in at No. 1. Some of the names on Shook’s list were expected – such as top-three superstars Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow and Josh Allen – but there are also several surprises, including an appearance by the painfully boring Kirk Cousins and former Seattle starter Russell Wilson, who bombed in general his first year in Denver, but apparently is still thriving in this department.

Here’s how Shook’s complete top-10 deep-thrower list stacks up.

Ken Walker NFL’s second-most explosive rusher, per Next Gen Stats

Seahawks running back Ken Walker burst onto the scene in 2022, running himself into the conversation for Offensive Rookie of the Year. While he ultimately lost that battle, Walker still had an impressive and productive rookie year, especially as an explosive runner.

In fact, according to Next Gen Stats, Walker was the second-most explosive rusher in the entire league last season. Nick Shook at NFL.com says they gave him an “explosive score” of 90, tied with Jaguars running back Travis Etienne for the second-highest in the league. Bears quarterback Justin Fields blew the field away with a score of 98.

Here’s what they had to say about Walker.

“He led all rushers in top speed reached with the ball in his possession at 22.09 mph, tied for third in gains of 10-plus yards over expected (15) and hit 20 mph on four carries on the year (tying for fourth in the category)… Oddly enough, Walker didn’t exceed expectation often, but some of that is a product of Seattle scheming and blocking its way to an expected average of 4.2 yards per Walker carry.”

Walker became Seattle’s starting running back in Week 6 after Rashaad Penny suffered another season-ending injury. He still managed to post over 1,000 rushing yards, nine touchdowns and didn’t fumble once. With Penny gone to Philadelphia, Walker is the clear No. 1 option in the backfield, but he does have competition coming in the form of former UCLA running back, Zach Charbonnet.

Like Walker, Charbonnet is another eyebrow-raising second-round pick by Seattle at running back. While they picked him at No. 52 overall, reports indicate they seriously considered taking him with their No. 37 pick. That speaks to a high level of confidence. Walker may only be an injury away from losing that RB1 spot to the team’s next-big-thing.

No one is going to overlook the Seahawks this year

The Seattle Seahawks shocked the NFL world last year. Seattle was picked to be among the worst teams in the league, but they certainly did not listen. Instead, the Seahawks won nine games and returned to the playoffs.

Now, after an offseason filled with a strong draft and shrewd free agent signings – such as bringing back Geno Smith, Bobby Wagner and newly acquired Dre’Mont Jones – Seattle looks to to be a player in a wide open NFC. No one is going to overlook the Seahawks this year, and they’re catching attention online.

On NFL.com’s list of Top 10 most complete teams, Seattle does make an appearance at No. 9 overall.

“There’s a reasonable argument that the Seahawks remain a bit thin on the defensive side, mostly on the back end, and that there are a few outstanding needs (such as defensive tackle) that are a bit worrisome. Finding a resurgent Geno Smith was a big development, and the past two draft classes have replenished the talent at several spots, including running back, the offensive line and the secondary.”

It’s fair to mention the defensive line, as the Seahawks did wait until day three of the draft to address the interior of the position group. But fans might raise their eyebrows at mention of being thin on the backside.

Seattle’s secondary looks to be one of the more suffocating in football, headlined by Quandre Diggs, the return of Jamal Adams, star second year corner Tariq Woolen and 2023 first round pick Devon Witherspoon.

The Eagles are stacked in almost every position, with the offensive line among the top football groups.

With a couple of All-Pros and future Hall of Famers (Jason Kelce, Lane Johnson) on the roster, it’s easy to forget that the team’s star left tackle is a former Australian Rugby prodigy that just started playing American football.

In a ranking of every NFC team’s most underappreciated player by NFL.com, Jordan Mailata made the list for Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Eagles
Jordan Mailata
OT · Age: 26
APY: $16 million (11th among left tackles).

According to computer vision, Mailata was able to keep defenders away from runners behind him — or to the two gaps to either side of him — longer than any other left tackle in 2022. PFF gave him the ninth-best overall grade among all tackles last season. I really like tracking Mailata, as the former rugby player is still new to this game. Thus, he’s probably still a ways away from peak performance, which is frightening for all Eagles opponents.

As part of the International Pathway Program – aimed at increasing participation in the NFL from around the world – Mailata initially started at the IMG Institute in Florida after joining four other hopefuls.

After being selected by the Eagles in the 2018 draft, Mailata spent multiple seasons on the practice squad before finally making his NFL debut, replacing injured rookie Jack Driscoll in the third quarter of a game against Washington.

He made his first start in Week 4, finishing his first season in the NFL with 15 appearances and ten starts.

After impressing under Jeff Stoutland, Mailata was rewarded with a four-year, $64 million contract, including $40.85 million guaranteed.

Now one of the best-left tackles in the NFL, Mailata will look to make his first Pro Bowl in 2023.

Cynthia Frelund projects Chiefs will have NFL’s top offense in 2023

The #Chiefs’ offense already faces lofty expectations as they look to secure Kansas City its third ring of the Patrick Mahomes era. | from @TheJohnDillon

Even after the Kansas City Chiefs decided to focus on their defense in the NFL draft, experts are still predicting a monster season for them in 2023 as they defend their Super Bowl title.

When NFL.com’s Cynthia Frelund broke down the numbers in a recent analysis of offenses around the league, she came to the conclusion that Kansas City was likely to have the highest projected win share of any team next season.

Last season, with Tyreek Hill exiting and JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling coming aboard, the Chiefs relied more on the short-passing game than they had in the past — and Patrick Mahomes proved he can adapt to any play style, logging 31 touchdown passes on throws of 10 air yards or less, 12 more than anyone else in the NFL (per Next Gen Stats). Kansas City, meanwhile, ranked first in the NFL in scoring and yards per play. I look forward to seeing what new plays, alignments and wrinkles Andy Reid folds into the offense this year, with the departures of Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman leaving room for Kadarius Toney, Skyy Moore and rookie Rashee Rice to step up around perennial pass-catching anchor Travis Kelce.

At a mark of 8.7, the team Chiefs are predicted to set the standard with Patrick Mahomes under center and a cast of returning talent that should continue to cruise amid the AFC’s offensive arms race. She pointed to the additions of Jawaan Taylor and Donovan Smith to the team’s offensive line, and second-round selection Rashee Rice to the receiving corps as factors that could push them to the remarkably high number.

Another factor working in Kansas City’s favor: the additions of veteran tackles Jawaan Taylor and Donovan Smith. My models have shown that improved offensive-line play is not just correlated but causal to significant year-over-year increases in first-down and touchdown probabilities. Despite the loss of Orlando Brown, the presence of Taylor and Smith on the line projects to keep the Chiefs’ offense rolling, even if that success is achieved in different ways yet again.

Championship defense can be a fickle thing, though, and Kansas City will have a target on its back in every game they play in 2023, so they’ll face an uphill battle to win their second straight Super Bowl. Nonetheless, if the Chiefs’ offense lives up to these lofty expectations during the regular season, Kansas City should have a shot to secure a first-round bye in the playoffs and home-field advantage for elimination games to add another ring to their collection.

2023 NFL mock draft round-up: Experts make final picks for Chargers

Analysts make their final predictions on what the Chargers will do with their first-round pick.

The 2023 NFL draft is a little over 24 hours away, and the final predictions are coming out leading up to the big event.

Here’s the final mock draft roundup as analysts make their picks for the Chargers:

NFL.com’s Charles Davis: WR Zay Flowers, Boston College

Analysis: “Every time I watched him play I was more impressed, and I’m sure that no one played harder snap to snap. Justin Herbert is thrilled to team up with this tough, dynamic playmaker.”

NFL.com’s Peter Schrager: TE Michael Mayer, Notre Dame

Analysis: “Another offensive weapon for Justin Herbert. Mayer is a fine all-around tight end prospect. He’s not as explosive as, say, Kyle Pitts, but he’s still a highly regarded pass catcher. Not to mention, he can pass block and loves to road grade in the run game. Bottom line: The Notre Dame product can play right away in an NFL offense.”

CBS Sports’ Will Brinson: WR Jalin Hyatt, Tennessee

Analysis: “Do not sleep on where the Chargers are at wide receiver right now with respect to these contracts — they need more bodies there, and GM Tom Telesco isn’t scared to dip into the UT talent pool.”

ESPN’s Matt Miller: RB Bijan Robinson, Texas

Analysis: ” Finding a landing spot for my No. 3 overall player is tough. Which team will value talent over positional value? A general manager I spoke with said, “The Eagles [at No. 10] make sense, but I could see him sliding to the early 20s.” I projected the latter, with Robinson’s wait ending with the Chargers landing a potential replacement for Austin Ekeler, who recently requested a trade. Robinson is a three-down, do-it-all back who can very quickly be the best in the NFL.”

Pro Football Focus’ Timo Riske: CB Deonte Banks, Maryland

Analysis: “The Chargers are in an all-in year in 2023, and Deonte Banks fits the bill. He plays a premium position, is available at board value and can contribute right away — even in a miraculously healthy Chargers team.”

ESPN’s Lindsy Thiry: TE Michael Mayer, Notre Dame

Analysis: “The Chargers are on the verge of signing quarterback Justin Herbert to a massive extension, so it only makes sense to ensure that they surround their franchise player with targets. An argument can be made for a speedy wide receiver, but tight end is a position of need and Mayer fits the bill.”

ESPN’s Mel Kiper & Todd McShay: WR Jordan Addison, USC

Analysis: “Addison would mesh well with the skill sets of Mike Williams and Keenan Allen in L.A., likely playing mostly in the slot. He is the best route runner of the wideouts in this class.”

Pro Football Network’s Adam Caplan: WR Jordan Addison, USC

Analysis: “Jordan Addison is likely going to be graded higher on most draft boards because of his positional versatility (can play inside or outside) and his hands over Johnston, which is why he fits in with the Chargers here.”

Pro Football Talk’s Peter King: WR Jordan Addison, USC

Analysis: “The East Coast kid strayed from his comfort zone in 2022, transferring to USC after winning the Biletnikoff Award (best receiver in college football) at Pitt in 2021, catching 100 balls. Then, with a ton of attention on him at USC, he caught 59 balls in a totally different offense. Mentally and physically tough, and versatile; played 60 percent in the slot and the rest outside in three college seasons.”

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer: TE Dalton Kincaid

Analysis: “Kincaid’s dynamic in the passing game, and would only further complicate the problem defenses have dealing with the oak trees the Chargers have at receiver, in Mike Williams and Keenan Allen. I do think trading up for Robinson, or taking a receiver (I’ve heard they like Boston College’s Zay Flowers) to get a year ahead of a need, would make sense too. But Kincaid is a very good fit for what new coordinator Kellen Moore is looking to build on offense.”

NFL.com analyst predicts Bills make ‘big splash’ at 2023 draft

A prediction that says the #Bills will trade up at the 2023 NFL draft:

One longtime NFL draft analyst has predicted that the Buffalo Bills will be part of some kind of activity at the 2023 event.

NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein has stuck to his guns and has continued to think that Buffalo is going to make something happen at the draft. The analyst has previously reflected that sentiment in mock drafts he has put together throughout the offseason.

His reasoning is because he thinks the Bills are still in the mindset of needing to make that one last move to push their squad over the hump and into the Super Bowl–That, similar to the idea of Buffalo signing Von Miller last offseason.

Via the Establish The Run podcast, Zierlain said he specifically thinks that the Philadelphia Eagles and Bills are the two teams to watch in his regard.

“I feel confident that Philadelphia is going to make a big splash, and Buffalo too. I don’t think you get that close (to a Super Bowl) and not say we need to take our shot right here. And I think of both of those teams, Buffalo could aggressively move up for somebody.” Zierlein said.

We’re only days away from the start of the first round of the 2023 draft, so we’ll find out if Zierlein’s prediction comes true soon.

Part of his thoughts on the Bills can be found in the Establish The Run clip below:

NFL Draft: Vikings trade up for a quarterback in latest mock draft

The Minnesota Vikings need a quarterback of the future and Chad Reuter of NFL.com has them trading up to 10 for Anthony Richardson.

Getting a quarterback of the future is a priority for many analysts, including myself. Will the Minnesota Vikings approach the NFL draft in the same way? That remains to be seen.

Chad Reuter of NFL.com has the Vikings approaching the draft with an aggressive nature toward the quarterback position. He has the Vikings trading with the Philadelphia Eagles to get up to 10th overall and selecting Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson

GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has not been shy about trading draft picks since taking on the job last year. Richardson’s potential as a dual-threat playmaker validates the hefty price Minnesota pays to jump up the board: the 23rd overall pick, a 2023 third-rounder (No. 87) and a 2024 first-rounder. (The Vikings also probably trade down in the fourth round to regain a selection.)

The potential that Richardson has is truly insane. He can throw it a country mile and is very effective and comfortable throwing it down the field. He needs to work out his mechanical issues, but that’s much more fixable than his elite traits and pocket presence.

John Schneider makes top 10 in NFL.com’s GM power rankings

Seahawks general manager John Schneider has had a great year.

Seahawks general manager John Schneider has had a great year. While Seattle didn’t win a Super Bowl or make a deep playoff run, this franchise has navigated the always-messy business of turning over a long-time starting quarterback and reinvigorated their roster with young talent. With another strong draft class this team could once again be among the strongest contenders in the NFC.

As is appropriate, Schneider is among the leaders in NFL.com’s annual GM power rankings. He came in at No. 9 this year. Here’s what Gregg Rosenthal had to say about JS:

“Most importantly, Schneider and Pete Carroll executed one of the trades of the decade by unloading Russell Wilson for a massive haul at the perfect time, moving on from a franchise icon without having to rebuild… We’ll have to see if the Seahawks ultimately replace Wilson with the Broncos’ pick (No. 5 overall) they got in exchange for him, but it’s been a great 12 months for Schneider regardless.”

Detractors and critics of Schneider’s work should probably get comfortable whether they like it or not. He signed an extension a couple years ago that will keep him in Seattle through the 2027 NFL draft.

Howie Roseman of the Eagles was ranked No. 1 on the list, followed by Brett Veach of the Chiefs. You can find the full list here.
