Notre Dame absolutely crushed Navy, 51-14, in the teams’ latest meeting at MetLife Stadium. The win was impressive enough that the Irish moved up to No. 8 in the latest AP Top 25 poll. Those two things on their own would make for an impressive weekend for any team.
How and where this game unfolded painted a sad picture for the New York Giants and New York Jets, the two NFL tenants at MetLife Stadium. Both teams are either at or tied for the bottom of their respective divisions, and it shows in the fact that neither team has given their fans much to cheer about at home this season.
By scoring seven touchdowns in defeating the Midshipmen, the Irish surpassed the combined total of touchdowns the Giants and Jets have scored at MetLife Stadium so far this season by one. With both teams on the road this week, that stat will hold going into November:
Notre Dame has scored more touchdowns in MetLife Stadium this year than the New York Jets & Giants combined…
Needless to say, times are tough for NFL fans in New York. That’s not the Irish’s problem though.

With one of the strongest starting fives in the NBA, the Knicks have the talent and depth to compete with anyone in the league. Their offseason moves, headlined by the acquisition of Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns, have transformed this team into a potential juggernaut. Towns addresses their frontline deficiencies, especially with Mitchell Robinson‘s ongoing recovery from ankle surgery, while Bridges provides elite perimeter defense and scoring ability.
Despite losing Julius Randle and others in blockbuster trades, the Knicks have managed to retain a solid core and infuse top-tier talent that complements the existing squad, particularly Jalen Brunson in the backcourt. Depth might be a concern, especially in the frontcourt until Robinson returns, though.
Tom Thibodeau’s knack for maximizing his main rotation could be crucial, but he’ll need to integrate bench contributions effectively to navigate the regular season and go deep in the playoffs. With a lineup that blends star power and utility, the Knicks are not just aiming for a good playoff run; they have the tools to aim for the top.
Dante Piraino was participating in a New York Federation B.A.S.S. Nation event when he hooked the massive smallmouth.
Dante Piraino enjoyed a successful day of tournament bass fishing last Sunday in New York, logging a five-fish bag limit totaling 31.4 pounds.
One of those fish – a 9-pound smallmouth bass – is a pending state record.
Piraino, who was participating in a New York Federation B.A.S.S. Nation Tournament in Ogdensburg, landed the smallmouth while casting a soft-plastic lure on the St. Lawrence River.
He told Wired2Fish that he hooked the fish at about 9 a.m. and figured it weighed six pounds.
But when he lipped the smallmouth with his thumb and index finger to hoist it into his live well, he realized that it was “heavier than expected.”
At 9 pounds, heavier than any largemouth bass caught on the same day, the catch eclipses the state record of 8 pounds, 6 ounces, set at Cayuga Lake in 2022.
Piraino, however, is still waiting to hear from the state regarding his potential record, a process that can take weeks.
For comparison, the all-tackle world record for smallmouth bass stands at 11 pounds, 15 ounces. That fish was caught at Tennessee’s Dale Hollow Lake in 1955.
The 2024 Shamrock Series will mark the first time Notre Dame has faced Army at Yankee Stadium since 2010. However, Irish football historians know that the teams playing each other in the Bronx goes back nearly a century.
The Irish and Black Knights faced each other at the original Yankee Stadium nearly every year from 1925 to 1946. The one exception was 1930, when the game was played at Soldier Field in Chicago.
I was in New York this past weekend to make my first trip to Yankee Stadium, where I came across the New York Yankees Museum. That’s where I discovered programs from the teams’ games at the original stadium in 1941 (a scoreless tie) and 1945 (a 48-0 blowout victory for the Knights).
The relics didn’t end there though. There was a piece of the goalpost from the 1932 game (the Irish won, 21-0) and a marker indicating that the 1928 contest is when [autotag]Knute Rockne[/autotag] famously told his team to “Win One for the Gipper”, which it did, 12-6.
So if you ever get to visit Yankee Stadium, swing by the New York Yankees Museum before or during the game. Admission is free, and you’ll be in awe by every historical relic you see, but especially those related to the Irish.

Our hundreds of raters weigh in on the best public-access and private courses in New York.
Looking to play the best golf courses in New York? Welcome to our annual Golfweek’s Best ranking of public-access and private courses.
Following are the rankings for both types of courses, as judged by our nationwide network of raters. The hundreds of members of our course-ratings panel continually evaluate courses and rate them on 10 criteria on a points basis of 1 through 10. They also file a single, overall rating on each course. Those overall ratings are averaged to produce all our Golfweek’s Best course rankings.
The courses on the first list allow public access in some fashion, be it standard daily green fees, through a resort or by staying at an affiliated hotel. If there’s a will, there’s a tee time – no membership required.
KEY: (m) modern, built in 1960 or after; (c) classic, built before 1960. For courses with a number preceding the (m) or (c), that is where the course ranks on Golfweek’s Best lists for top 200 modern and classic courses in the U.S.
Continuing their ESPN rounds from the day before, representatives from Notre Dame’s football team had even more to share. The most significant segment came when [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and [autotag]Jordan Clark[/autotag] appeared on “First Take”. One secret badly kept recently was that the Irish were planning on wearing new home uniforms in 2024. The secret officially was out after this appearance:

Earlier in the morning, Freeman, Clark and [autotag]Riley Leonard[/autotag] appeared on “Get Up” with Mike Greenberg and Ryan Clark, Jordan’s father. The roundtable discussion began this way:
The Irish came to New York with the purpose of hyping up their season for the Worldwide Leader in Sports. They certainly have done that, and they’ll take in a Yankees game later with Freeman throwing out the first pitch. This will be a trip to remember for those involved.

The Irish get some promoting in with the Worldwide Leader in Sports.
With college football’s returning closer with each passing day, the hype machine has to be turned on right now. Case in point, Notre Dame has decided now is the time to make the rounds with ESPN. The Irish representatives have a full schedule packed:
Two moments from this unofficial marketing by the Irish were highlighted by the program’s social media account. Both of them took place during “SportsCenter”.
First, [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] went through the two-minute drill with Notre Dame alumnus [autotag]Hannah Storm[/autotag], the wife of [autotag]Dan Hicks[/autotag], who will return to call Irish games on NBC this season:
New Irish quarterback [autotag]Riley Leonard[/autotag] also was featured. Among other things, he was asked how he anticipates coming onto the field for the first time at Notre Dame Stadium:
Simply put, the Irish don’t plan to leave New York without making a major impact on the programs they will appear on. There are many ways to get fans excited, and this is among the most effective. We’ll see exactly how effective soon enough.

They say you can’t go home again, but that no longer is the case for former Notre Dame defenseman [autotag]Dennis Gilbert[/autotag]. He grew up in Buffalo, New York, and now, he’ll get to play the game he loves there. Gilbert has signed a one-year contract with his hometown Sabres. He joins [autotag]Ian Cole[/autotag] among former Irish defensemen who found new homes via free agency on the same day.
The 2023-24 season was Gilbert’s most successful yet. In his first full NHL season, he scored seven points, six on assists, and had 16 penalty minutes with the Calgary Flames. He also recorded 23 shots on goal.
Over the 82 NHL games he has played with the Flames, Colorado Avalanche and Chicago Blackhawks, he has gotten in 12 fights. At a time when fights in hockey are becoming more uncommon, it’s nice to see at least one player hold up that part of the game to some degree regardless of how one feels about it.

The late, great Toby Keith has a song that goes, “I ain’t as good as I once was, but I’m as good once, as I ever was,” and it’s a thought that many of us in our 30s have when we try and do things that came naturally in our 20s.
I can only imagine a similar thought was going through the head of Justin Thomas on Tuesday night. The two-time major champion is having himself a week in the Big Apple. On Monday Thomas was a guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and attended a New York Knicks game. On Tuesday he went to a New York Rangers game and was put on the jumbotron.
As one does when holding a beer in front of tens of thousands of fans, Thomas attempted to down his drink in one swig (keyword attempted). The 15-time PGA Tour winner was off to a great start before he ended up wearing the last third of his beer on his shirt.
