Oklahoma included in ESPN’s Bottom 10 after their shutout loss to Texas

After their shutout loss to the Texas Longhorns, ESPN’s Ryan McGee included the Oklahoma Sooners in his bottom 10 teams in the country.

It’s been a rough few weeks for the Oklahoma Sooners. After three straight losses, expectations are being recalibrated as Brent Venables and his coaching staff looks to lay a foundation for the Sooners for the future.

Until then, the Sooners are in the midst of one of the worst three-game stretches in program history. Get a win this weekend, and perhaps it can turn things around a bit.

This week, they take on a team that has perennially been in ESPN’s bottom 10 teams put together by Ryan McGee. Well, in a role reversal, the Kansas Jayhawks play the ranked team, while the Oklahoma Sooners find themselves in McGee’s bottom ten.

Now, it might be a bit of hyperbole based on the last three weeks. But in those three games, the Sooners haven’t been able to stop anybody, and the offense was inconsistent, even with Dillon Gabriel at quarterback.

However, it feels a bit wild to put the Sooners in this group, as eight of the other 10 teams have one or fewer losses on the season. The Sooners have been bad the last three games of the season, but that shouldn’t completely wipe away everything they did to UTEP, Kent State, and Nebraska. They might not be a top 50 team, but they certainly aren’t a bottom 10 club right now.

Here’s McGee’s bottom 10.

Florida International vs New Mexico State Game Preview

Why Florida International Will Win

Is there anything positive coming off a 73-0 loss to Western Kentucky?

The Panthers haven’t been bad overall in pass protection, and before last week they were getting just enough of a passing game to get going.

More than anything else, they’ve got to force takeaways to give the offense easy chances. They got two in each of the first two games and one against the Hilltoppers, and New Mexico State will have interception issues at times.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why New Mexico State Will Win

Florida International is having a nightmare of a time getting the offense working.

The scoring defense is the worst in the nation allowing over 50 points per game after the WKU debacle, and the O isn’t in place to keep up any sort of pace.

The running game isn’t tearing off big runs, and there isn’t any downfield passing attack. New Mexico State finally got the ground game going like head coach Jerry Kill would like, and the success from the 45-26 win over Hawaii should continue.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Aggies might not get the 326 yards on the ground like they did against the Rainbow Warriors, but they should be able to roll without too much of a problem.

As long as the passing attack doesn’t give up a slew of picks, the program will have its first two game winning streak since late 2019.

Hawaii vs New Mexico State Game Preview

Why Hawaii Will Win

The Rainbow Warriors were finally able to have some fun.

They have yet to throw a touchdown pass in four games, but they got a 24-14 win over Duquesne with three key takeaways, a good enough game from the defense, and a whole lot of big plays at the right moment.

New Mexico State can’t throw.

Actually, it can throw, but it can’t complete many of its passes – it hasn’t been able to hit better than a 34% completion rate over the last three games.

The Aggies have turned it over 12 times in the four games, and that’s what Hawaii needs. It has to be at least +2 in turnover margin because …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why New Mexico State Will Win

Hawaii’s is struggling.

The defensive front isn’t generating enough pressure, the offense is turning it over a bit too much, and offense is having a hard time doing anything consistently right.

Yeah, the Rainbow Warriors might have beaten Duquesne, but they did it with 184 yards of total offense.

New Mexico State might not be doing much with the passing attack, either, but it was able to run a little bit against UTEP and even Wisconsin, and …

Wisconsin Badgers vs. New Mexico State game recap: Everything we know

Wisconsin #Badgers vs. New Mexico State game recap:

Head coach Paul Chryst and the Wisconsin Badgers (2-1) took care of business at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday afternoon, beating the visiting New Mexico State Aggies (0-4) behind a dominant offensive performance and a strong defensive showing from Jim Leonhard and company.

Bobby Engram’s offense produced a balanced 595 total yards of offense (335 passing, 260 rushing) and scored 66 points while holding the Aggies to 242 yards – improving to 2-1 in non-conference play as the Badgers prepare for a grueling Big Ten slate.

For Wisconsin, this was the most points the Badgers had scored since 2014 when they hung 68 against BGSU. It’s also worth noting this is the most points scored in a single game during the Paul Chryst era.

Wisconsin vs New Mexico State Game Preview

Why New Mexico State Will Win

Force turnovers and take your chances from there.

All teams have problems if they’re turning the ball over, but few over the years melt down harder than Wisconsin.

There’s a certain rhythm and control this programs needs to operate.

Normally it all works, but when the mistakes start flowing – like in the Notre Dame debacle last season, several times against Northwestern over the years, and last week against Washington State – the system breaks down.

The Badgers controlled the game against the Cougars, outgained them by almost 150 yards, and had plenty of opportunities in the 17-14 loss, but late mistakes and just two really strong plays from the Wazzu offense were enough.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Wisconsin Will Win

New Mexico State has forced two takeaways in three games, and it doesn’t have the ability to capitalize even if it generates the errors.

There won’t be anything happening on the ground. Wisconsin hasn’t looked quite right overall so far, but he’s allowing just 2.3 yards per carry.

There won’t be anything happening through the air, either.

New Mexico State is having an impossible time completing for forward pass, hitting just 42% of its throws in three games.

Wisconsin should be able to control the lines without any sort of a problem, and it should be able put this away with just a few early scores – as long as there aren’t a ton of turnovers along the way.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Aggie head coach Jerry Kill has been around the Madison block before, but he doesn’t have any semblance of talent compared to some of his former Minnesota teams.

New Mexico State will try hard. It has tough tacklers in a decent linebacking corps, but the lines are about to get destroyed, the Badger offense will come up with something strong, and all will be right with the world again for one week.

And then comes the trip to Ohio State. For now, just being 2-1 with an easy victory will be good enough.

New Mexico State vs UTEP Game Preview

Why New Mexico State Will Win

It’s been a rough start for the Aggies, but UTEP is more of a fit than Nevada and Minnesota were.

Eventually the offense under Jerry Kill will start running well. The passing attack hasn’t clucked quite yet – to be nice about it – and the ground game didn’t get going well enough against Nevada and went nowhere against the Gophers.

The Aggies weren’t Oklahoma, but UTEP got hammered by the Sooners for 259 yards and four scores in last week’s 45-13 loss, and allowed four yards per carry in the 31-13 loss to North Texas.

New Mexico State has to give it a try because …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why UTEP Will Win

There’s no New Mexico State passing game.

It gave it a shot against the Wolf Pack and came up with 218 yards, but the four interceptions were a killer. The O managed to hit just 4-of-13 throws against the Gophers.

UTEP, on the other hand, has the downfield passing game. There’s only one touchdown pass in the two games, but Gavin Hardison threw for 537 yards and a score, he’s go the ability to keep driving the ball down the field on the NMSU secondary, and …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

UTEP has more of an offense, and the defense is better than it showed so far.

North Texas and Oklahoma were able to do whatever they wanted against the Miner defense, but the stops will come against the run.

UTEP will be balanced – it’ll be the best day of the year by for for the ground attack – and Hardison will at least match the 249 yards he threw for in last year’s 30-3 win.

Minnesota vs New Mexico State Game Preview

Why New Mexico State Will Win

The Aggies already have a warm-up game under their belt.

They weren’t bad in the 23-12 loss to Nevada – the defense did a nice job of holding up, was solid against the Wolf Pack passing game – there wasn’t anything happening deep – and was in it until late.

Former Gopher head coach Jerry Kill is facing his old program, and his team will try to replace the same style with a tough running game that controls the clock. That didn’t work against Nevada, but that’s still the goal.

Minnesota has no problem grinding games down a bit, and that might fit into New Mexico State’s plan to make this a battle.

Minnesota’s defense didn’t come up with enough plays in the backfield last season, but …

Week 1 Expert Picks, Thursday & Friday

Why Minnesota Will Win

The Gophers should be a rock against the run.

A few transfers are helping out the established starters, and it should all work against a New Mexico State offense that’s going to try pounding away, but will struggle to get too much going. The Aggies managed just 3.4 yards per carry against Nevada, and they’re not going to have the passing attack to open it up deep.

The focus will be on the other side and the return of RB Mohamad Ibrahim from a torn Achilles tendon. He and Trey Potts should be able to rumble at will as the revamped offensive line gets time to jell.

New Mexico State’s front three should be better, but it has a long way to go after allowing close to 200 rushing yards per game. It gave up 170 yards to the 1-2 punt of Toa Tau and Devonte Lee, and now it’s about to get hit a whole lot harder.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

Will Minnesota show up?

It almost always wins the layup non-conference games under PJ Fleck – the gack against Bowling Green last season was the exception – but it has a weird way of needing to work WAY too hard in games that should be easy.

It struggled against Miami University last year, had to push to get by South Dakota State, Fresno State, and Georgia Southern in 2019, and …

It beat New Mexico State 48-10 in 2018. There won’t be a problem here with the balanced offense taking over after two drives.

New Mexico State Aggies Preview 2022

There’s hope.

The program that hasn’t had a whole lot of fun has a new coach, a new vision, and it’s got a conference to play in when it joins Conference USA next year.

Doug Martin gave it one heck of a run.

He kept plugging away year after year in an impossible situation, busted through in a wonderful 2017 campaign with a winning season and bowl victory – the only winning season in his 16 runs as a head coach – but after nine years New Mexico State has a new head man.

Enter Jerry Kill, a magnificent head coach who’s been able to win everywhere he has been, but medical issues derailed his time at Minnesota.

He’s been an assistant ever since, and now he’s getting a shot to do what he does with a program that won more than three games just once since 2011 and enjoyed one winning season since 2002.

This team will get good offensive line play, and there will be more from the ground game, but more than anything else, it’s about getting the pieces in place for 2023.

New Mexico State Aggies Preview 2022: Offense

Again, a Jerry Kill team will want to run the ball. His teams are built on controlling the clock, grinding it out, and playing a tight style without a lot of mistakes. That’s easier said than done with what he has to work with, but there’s a decent amount of experience returning for offensive coordinator Tim Beck to work with.

The offensive line. To keep hammering this home, Kill will end up making the offensive line solid. Last year’s group couldn’t get much going for the ground game, and the pass protection wasn’t there, but there’s three starters are expected back and there’s good versatility to play around with the lineup.

Leading rusher Juwaun Price is off to Syracuse – he ran for 693 yards and ten scores – putting the pressure on former Michigan Wolverine O’Maury Samuels and TCU transfer Ahmonte Watkins to carry the load.

The Aggies lost top quarterback Jonah Johnson to the transfer portal, and it’s going to take a little scrambling this fall camp to settle in. Sophomore Weston Eget is a big passer who completed just one of ten throws in his time last year, and junior Dino Maldonado can run a bit.

For all of the team’s problems, there was a surprisingly deep receiving corps. That’s going to be put to the test with deep threat Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda bolting for Nebraska and Terrell Warner in the transfer portal.

This year, pretty much everyone who did much of anything big last year is gone. This will be a very young, very inexperienced bunch.

New Mexico State Aggies Preview 2022: Defense

The defense was the bigger problem last year. The offense wasn’t always great, but the defense provided no help allowing 489 yards and 40 points per game. On the plus side, eight starters are expected back and there’s enough transfer portal help to make a difference.

The secondary has a whole lot of options now. As is the cornerbacks are experienced – DJ McCullough led the team with three picks and Syrus Dumas was second with two – but on the way is Mekhi Miller from Maryland and Andrew Seldon from Michigan to provide some help. They all need to make more stops for a secondary that gave up 291 yards an outing.

With Chris Ojoh – the team’s leading sacker with six – flirting with the transfer portal and then sticking around, and with Trevor Brohard back in the middle with the game to go along with his name, the linebacking corps should be an early strength.

The front three is back full along with veterans for a decent rotation. There has to be a whole lot more happening against the run, but there’s size around end Donavan King – one of the team’s best at getting into the backfield.

Nevada vs New Mexico State Game Preview

Why Nevada Will Win

There’s a whole lot of starting over going on at New Mexico State.

Jerry Kill is taking over as the head coach, and he’s going to want to run the ball, rely on the defense, and try to control the clock and be efficient – that’s going to take a little bit to get going with almost everyone who did anything big for the 2021 Aggie offense needing to be replaced.

Nevada is changing a slew of things up as well, but it has the running backs in place to pound away, and the passing attack should be just good enough to keep things moving.

The New Mexico State defense should be better, but it will still have a long way to go after giving up close to 500 yards and 40 points per game. However …

Week 0 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why New Mexico State Will Win

There’s a whole lot of starting over going on at Nevada.

New head coach Ken Wilson has to fill in the parts after Jay Norvell left for Colorado State and took a slew of key guys with him. The Wolf Pack lost almost everyone who did anything important with their high-powered passing game last year.

There’s a ton of experience returning on the Aggie D. The O might have a few kinks to work out, but the other side gets back eight starters, the linebacking corps isn’t all that bad, and there are options to play around with in the secondary.

Yes, New Mexico State’s offense isn’t going to be steady, but the Nevada defense needs to hope and pray the transfers can help fill in the massive holes all over the place.

Week 0 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Kill is a terrific head coach who should be able to get his ground game going early on. The Aggies will play relatively well over the first half at home, but Nevada should get an instant payoff from the gajillion transfers coming in.

A few New Mexico State turnovers will help Nevada start to break away in the second half. The relative experience at quarterback – Nate Cox has been around the Wolf Pack long enough to know what he’s doing, and Oklahoma State transfer Shane Illingworth will play a role – will be the difference.
