Notre Dame Baseball: Irish Stay Unbeaten With Friday Night Win in Miami

Irish bats stay hot!

Notre Dame baseball continued their strong start to the season Friday when the Irish took down Florida International 13-4 in Miami.

Power bats were the story for the Irish again as Notre Dame slugged four home runs in the victory.  T.J. Williams led the way with two blasts while David Glancy and Connor Hincks added long balls as well.

Williams first home run came in the second inning, a three-run blast to give Notre Dame an early 3-0 lead.  Solid baserunning and taking advantage of FIU misques led to three more runs in the third, stretching the lead to 6-0 before a couple of issues in the field by the Irish led to a pair of FIU runs in the bottom half.

Williams added his second home run of the night in the sixth inning, this one a solo shot to stretch the lead back to 8-2 before FIU put up another pair in the bottom half.

Hincks went yard with a three-run blast in the eighth to make it an 11-4 lead for the Irish before they’d tack on a pair more in the ninth.

Notre Dame is now 4-0 on the young season and will play a pair of games Saturday against Florida International again starting at 2 p.m. ET.

Photo gallery: Arkansas’ 44-20 victory over Florida International

Here are the best images from Arkansas’ victory over Florida International on Saturday night.

Arkansas needed a feel good moment after last week’s debacle against Auburn.

Florida International was happy to be salve in the Razorbacks’ wounds.

The Razorbacks (4-7) were able to emerge victorious and will now go into the season finale with Missouri with some renewed confidence and try and spoil a 10-win season for the Tigers and Arkansas native Eli Drinkwitz.

It will most likely also keep the wolves at bay regarding Sam Pittman’s job status, but that will still be a topic of conversation and will only intensify if Missouri comes into Fayetteville and has its way with the Hogs.

Here are some of the best images from Saturday night’s game under the lights.

Arkansas handles Florida International comfortably, 44-20

Arkansas is back in the win column, dispatching Florida International on Saturday night in Fayetteville.

Arkansas got its first win in Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium since September 9 on Saturday night.

KJ Jefferson threw for three touchdowns and Dominique Johnson rumbled for a touchdown as the Razorbacks got past Conference USA’s Florida International, 44-20 in front of 61,442 fans (it wasn’t that many).

Alfahiym Walcott stripped a FIU player and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter, the fifth defensive touchdown of the year for Arkansas, although it was ruled an interception return.

Cam Little uncharacteristically missed two field goals but still made three as well and converted all of his extra points.

Arkansas outgained the visiting Panthers 510-341 and racked up 24 first downs.

Isaiah Augustave, a freshman who has only seen spot duty this season, ended up being the leading rusher and crossed the century mark with 101 yards on 14 totes.

Jefferson ended up breaking the career passing yards record early in the first half. He now holds that, the career touchdowns mark and the total yards from scrimmage mark.

The Razorbacks will be back in action on Friday at 3 p.m., with the Missouri Tigers coming to town for the Battle Line Rivalry on CBS.

Arkansas’ one previous meeting with FIU was a rout

Arkansas has played Florida International one time previously, on Homecoming 2007 and won 58-10.

During the craziness that was the 2007 college football season, Arkansas’ late October meeting with Florida International was par for the course.

The Razorbacks drubbed FIU on Homecoming, 58-10, in front of 60,750 fans on a beautiful fall afternoon.

Arkansas led 31-10 at halftime and then shut out the visiting Panthers in the second half while forcing seven turnovers.

Nathan Emert actually got the majority of snaps at quarterback in this game in relief of Casey Dick, and threw a touchdown to Marcus Monk right before halftime.

Felix Jones had 17 carries for 89 yards and a touchdown, as Darren McFadden wasn’t asked to carry as much of a load with it being a nonconference game in preparation for the November run.

The Razorbacks ultimately went 3-1 that November, only losing on the road to eventual SEC East champion Tennessee in Neyland Stadium.

Houston Nutt’s final game would come on Black Friday in the upset of No. 1 LSU in three overtimes, 50-48.

Jaguars reportedly add FIU’s Greg Austin to coaching staff

The Jaguars are reportedly adding FIU’s Greg Austin, who previously worked with the Eagles, to the coaching staff.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are adding Florida International offensive line coach Greg Austin to their coaching staff as an assistant offensive line coach, according to reports from On3 and Underdog Dynasty.

Austin, 38, played offensive line at Nebraska and previously spent three seasons as an assistant offensive line coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. He went back to the collegiate coaching ranks after the 2015 season.

After two seasons as UCF’s offensive line coach and three seasons at Nebraska in the same position, Austin spent 2022 as FIU’s run game coordinator and offensive line coach.

It’s unclear for now if this means any changes will be made to the Jaguars coaching staff to accommodate the addition of Austin. Jacksonville found a lot of success up front in Phil Rauscher’s first season as the team’s offensive line coach, and former Buccaneers lineman Todd Washington worked as the team’s assistant offensive line coach.

The Jaguars allowed the fifth fewest sacks in the NFL and averaged the 10th most yards per rushing attempt.

Notre Dame doubles up Florida offers today, this time a 2024 cornerback

The Irish are hitting the Sunshine State hard today

The Irish are hitting Florida hard today, as earlier they offered a scholarship to 2025 athlete [autotag]Jaime Ffrench Jr.[/autotag] That wasn’t the only Sunshine State prospect that got an offer from [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and his staff today.

[autotag]Jon Mitchell[/autotag], a class of 2024 cornerback received an offer from Freeman and defensive backs coach [autotag]Chris O’Leary[/autotag]. The six-foot and 160-pound cornerback doesn’t quite have the offer list of Ffrench Jr. but a still solid, growing list that includes [autotag]Michigan[/autotag], [autotag]Michigan State[/autotag], [autotag]Penn State[/autotag] and a few others.

Football runs in the Mitchell family as his brother Nic plays for [autotag]Mississippi State[/autotag] and brother Kris plays for [autotag]Florida International[/autotag]. Safe to say the family is an athletic one and the youngest might end up being the best.

At the current moment, the Irish have a fantastic start to their 2024 recruiting class, with seven total commitments led by quarterback [autotag]CJ Carr[/autotag] and wide receiver [autotag]Cam Williams[/autotag].

Notre Dame bowl projections following win over Navy

Is there a Mayo dumping in Marcus Freeman’s future?

Where will Notre Dame be headed this postseason?  It seems like the answer to that question is one of two places.  Either out west to take on a Pac-12 opponent in a bowl game the Irish have never participated in before, or to Jacksonville to take on an SEC foe in a game Notre Dame hasn’t played in since the conclusion of Tyrone Willingham’s first season as head coach.

However, there are a couple of others to put into the mix and one or two that we’ll file under the category of “I’ll have what he’s having”.  Check out the latest bowl projections for Notre Dame from the national prognosticators below.

Florida International vs New Mexico State Game Preview

Why Florida International Will Win

Is there anything positive coming off a 73-0 loss to Western Kentucky?

The Panthers haven’t been bad overall in pass protection, and before last week they were getting just enough of a passing game to get going.

More than anything else, they’ve got to force takeaways to give the offense easy chances. They got two in each of the first two games and one against the Hilltoppers, and New Mexico State will have interception issues at times.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why New Mexico State Will Win

Florida International is having a nightmare of a time getting the offense working.

The scoring defense is the worst in the nation allowing over 50 points per game after the WKU debacle, and the O isn’t in place to keep up any sort of pace.

The running game isn’t tearing off big runs, and there isn’t any downfield passing attack. New Mexico State finally got the ground game going like head coach Jerry Kill would like, and the success from the 45-26 win over Hawaii should continue.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Aggies might not get the 326 yards on the ground like they did against the Rainbow Warriors, but they should be able to roll without too much of a problem.

As long as the passing attack doesn’t give up a slew of picks, the program will have its first two game winning streak since late 2019.

Perfect mid/late-round RB fits for Eagles in 2022 NFL draft

Looking at the perfect mid/late-round running back fits for the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2022 NFL draft

The Eagles currently have four running backs on the roster and the with the NFL draft fast approaching, the organization could choose to bypass adding another ball carrier.

If Howie Roseman chooses to replace Jordan Howard, there are several worthy candidates to join the depth chart, while not interfering with Kenneth Gainwell’s development as a second-year player.

With Miles Sanders entering the final year of his rookie deal, here are the perfect mid to late-round running back fits for the Eagles in this month’s draft.

Marshall vs FIU Game Preview, C-USA Conference Tournament

Why FIU Will Win

The Golden Panthers are going to keep on shooting.

They might have issues turning the ball over, and the defense is too often a rumor, but they’re going to keep on firing from three.

They’re not great at hitting their shots, but they keep taking them to generate threes in bulk. Best of all, they’ve been able to beat Marshall twice even though they weren’t rolling from the outside.

On the flip side, Marshall can’t hit a thing from the outside – even though it takes a ton of threes – and it doesn’t do enough from the free throw line and from the field to make up for it.

But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Marshall Will Win

FIU doesn’t do anything from the free throw line, either.

It turns the ball over in bulk which doesn’t help an already suspect defense. No, Marshall doesn’t make threes – hitting just 30% – but it’ll keep bombing away to at least match FIU in outside shots. It could be a matter of quantity over quality here.

FIU has lost four straight with the offense flailing, there’s no consistency whatever, and …

Marshall vs FIU: What’s Going To Happen

FIU is just a bit better from three than Marshall is.

Neither team is anything special, but the Herd are having a hard time getting to 40% from the field, much less from three. FIU will come up with a few more free throws and few extra threes.

It won’t be easy, but it’ll be three in a row in the series against Marshall.
