Richard Pitino secures the commitment of local product Dylan Chavez for 2024 class.

The New Mexico Lobos are gearing up for year three of the Richard Pitino era in Albuquerque. After a quicker turnaround than even the lead man would have expected from the program he inherited back in 2021, one of the strongest fanbases in the country has returned to the Pit in droves.

Though sometimes looking too far ahead can be a bit of a risk, it’s never too early to receive the commitment of players you have been recruiting for what is often years at a time. Thursday afternoon at ABC Prep in Albuquerque, Lobo fans received such a recruiting win.

La Cueva High School senior Dylan Chavez chose to stay home & play for his hometown New Mexico Lobos. He’ll join the team for the 2024-2025 season as a preferred walk-on.

The Lobos have a rich history of local players dawning the signature cherry & silver. And walk-ons have made their impact on the program over the years. Guys like Jordan Arroyo, Clay Patterson & Tim Jacobs all stepped into bigger than expected roles over the past decade. Currently on the roster are some more local hoops stars in freshman guard Shane Douma-Sanchez (Del Norte HS) & junior transfer Deraje Agbaosi (Eldorado HS).

So when asked about why he chose to stay home as a non-scholarship player over a handful of division-I offers, Chavez’s answer wouldn’t surprise you “I wanted to stay home, play in front of my family,”.

“I grew up a Lobo fan. My dad and my grandpa would take me to the games as a kid. So I think it’d be awesome to stay home and play for the city I grew up in,” told the Albuquerque Journal.

Fans might remember the 6’6 shooting guard had previously committed to New Mexico State. But decommitted this past spring after the coaching staff was fired in February in the middle of a tumultuous season in Las Cruces.

Chavez joins Pitino’s first commit for the 2024 class, combo guard Kayde Dotson of Beaumont, TX. The three-star combo guard made his announcement back on September 20th via his Instagram. Choosing the Lobos over a dozen of other D-I offers, including Grand Canyon, SMU & in-state rivals New Mexico State.

Coach Pitino and company are also still in contention for three-star Canadian Jovan Milicevic, whom they had on official visit in early September.

So, the hype surrounding New Mexico’s forthcoming season is real. Not only by fans and traditional media who cover the team, but nationwide. Fans have a chance to get their first glance of the Lobos in person on October 14th at 12:00 PM inside the Pit. They’ll have their home opener on November 6th against Texas Southern.

GAME NOTES: Wyoming | New Mexico

ODDS: Wyoming -14

OVER/UNDER: 41.5 points

An odd finale to Wyoming’s non-conference schedule, a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown leading to a 22-19 victory over Appalachian State, now puts the Cowboys at 3-1. This is now the fourth season of the past five, they have begun in this fashion.

The Lobos return to Laramie for both teams’ first action in the Mountain West for 2023.

Despite having one of the worst offenses in all of college football last season, the Lobos still gained an early 14-0 lead on the Cowboys in Albuquerque. UAB transfer Dylan Hopkins commands the new-look New Mexico offense and has added a needed explosion to the offense.

The quarterback has taken the Lobos to two victories thus far, against Tennessee Tech and Massachusetts. However, in the second half against UMass, the offense only managed zero points and 50 yards before ultimately winning in overtime.

The Lobo defense has also allowed the 27th most points per game in college football.

Wyoming also had a lackluster offensive performance last week, with only 31 passing yards. Take out Harrison Waylee’s 75-yard touchdown, and the offense only managed 133 yards.

New Mexico has had the Pokes number since head coach Craig Bohl took over the program in 2014, winning six of the 10 games. This will be the third time these teams have opened the Mountain West Conference schedule against each other; however, it has never gone the Pokes way, losing both. How does Wyoming turn this around?

A Wyoming victory comes from…

A Wyoming victory requires a better showing from the offense. Waylee’s dominance through his two games has shown for the Cowboys, but the team needs to be able to move the ball continually. Whether this comes from the speed of Waylee or a mixture of other backs, such as Sam Scott and Jamari Ferrell, the rushing attack must be on point. Earlier in the week, it was announced from the team that D.Q. James had been dismissed from the team. On social media, James said otherwise, that he had entered the transfer portal.

Coinciding with the rush, the team must be back to dominating the time of possession. Against Appalachian State, the Pokes held the ball for less than 20 minutes. The first three games saw the Pokes 13th in the country, averaging 33 minutes and 30 seconds per game. They’ve now dropped nearly three minutes from one game. With New Mexico having new offensive weapons, ensuring they can’t use them helps for a Wyoming win.

Another aid to a brown and gold win is getting earlier stops in Lobo drives. Last week, the defense bent but didn’t break, giving up the four field goals. However, many of those scoring drives were long-sustained drives of 67 yards, 87, 87 and 18. While limiting the number of points is good, preventing any points, obviously, is great.

Stopping New Mexico early in their drives will be key through pressure from the defensive line and quick wrap-ups of any check-downs Hopkins may throw. Keeping an eye on running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt, averaging 6.8 yards per carry will also be key to shutting down the Lobo offense.

The first third of the season has shown that quarterback Andrew Peasley doesn’t need to throw for 300 yards and several touchdowns a game for the Pokes to win. What does need to happen is an effective passing game. Rarely does a team like Wyoming win with 31 passing yards and only five completions.

A fully healthy Peasley completing passes will help push this game out of reach from the Lobos.

Watch: Tru Washington announces commitment to New Mexico

Here’s how four-star combo guard Tru Washington announced he’ll be playing for New Mexico.

There are still many hoopers from the recruiting class of 2023 who have not yet made their college commitments, including LeBron James’ son, Sierra Canyon (Calif.) combo guard Bronny James.

One of the other top remaining uncommitted players in the nation made his decision this week. Here’s how Compass Prep (Ariz.) four-star combo guard Tru Washington announced that he will be playing for New Mexico.

Asked why he picked the Lobos, Washington told On3 that New Mexico kept it real during his recruitment and he’s looking forward to the atmosphere.

“I chose New Mexico just because they always kept it real, They have been at every AAU game, whether I was playing or not… Lobos nation, I can’t wait to get out there and play in front of you guys. I know The Pit is a great atmosphere to play in.”

According to Maxpreps, in 2021-22 at Mountain Pointe (Ariz.) Washington averaged 21.5 points per game to go along with 7.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 3.3 steals. He shot 57% from the floor, 33% from three and 79% from the line.

Going by On3’s rankings, Washington (6-foot-3, 175 pounds) is ranked No. 16 among combo guards and No. 115 overall in the nation.

Richard Pitino’s recruiting class of 2023 now has two members. The other is Texas power forward Jadyn Toppin.

‘We’ll be an improved group’: Sooners defensive backfield improved from a year ago

Head Coach Brent Venables believes his defensive backs will be better than they were a year ago.

Brent Venables and his staff committed to ensuring the results of the 2022 season would not be replicated in 2023.

He and the Sooners’ staff were hyperactive in the transfer portal, and they closed their 2023 recruiting class on a significant high note by securing the services of five-star safety Peyton Bowen.

As the Sooners look ahead to spring practice, the time for evaluation and understanding just what type of roster the Sooners will have is here. When speaking with the media last week, Venables made it clear one specific group is primed for a better year.

The defensive backfield.

“So I think we’ll be an improved group,” Venables said about the defensive backfield. “And we lost a bunch of guys. I think we know that … I’m not sure we didn’t lose a lot of production in the secondary, but we, we lost a bunch of bodies.”

Brent Venables believes between the players returning and those that joined the team as midyear enrollees, the Oklahoma Sooners have a better group of defensive backs than they did a year ago.

[autotag]Kendall Dennis[/autotag] (USF), [autotag]Bryson Washington[/autotag] (New Mexico) and [autotag]Joshua Eaton[/autotag] (Texas State) transferred out after the 2022 season. It’s notable none landed with a Power Five squad.

[autotag]CJ Coldon[/autotag] is the biggest loss the Sooners suffered in the secondary after a strong second half of the season. [autotag]Justin Broiles[/autotag] hopes to continue his playing career at the NFL level.

Dennis, Washington and Eaton didn’t play enough for their departures to matter much. Their transfers allow Oklahoma to examine what they have in the players brought in over the past two cycles.

Gentry Williams snagged an interception in his first collegiate game. He didn’t see the field much as a true freshman, but the Sooners love his size, athletic ability, and his competitiveness.

Robert Spears-Jennings is another 2022 signee that could make an impact this season. His play speed and physicality were on display last season despite limited snaps.

Kani Walker was brought in before the season from Louisville. Like Williams, Walker has the physical tools the Sooners are looking for in their outside corners.

[autotag]Reggie Pearson[/autotag], a transfer from Texas Tech, is a heavy hitter with plenty of collegiate experience. That physicality and experience will help bring an edge to the Sooners defensive backfield.

Most notably, [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag] also joins the defensive back room. The most highly coveted secondary recruit for Oklahoma in quite a while, Bowen is expected to be a great one.

[autotag]Billy Bowman[/autotag], [autotag]Woodi Washington[/autotag], [autotag]Damond Harmon[/autotag], [autotag]Jaden Davis[/autotag], [autotag]Justin Harrington[/autotag] and [autotag]Key Lawrence[/autotag] return after playing meaningful snaps for the Sooners last season. They’ll get another offseason in the Sooners’ defensive system, and should have a better understanding of the expectations in the defense.

The hope is because of the improved talent, there will be better production and depth on the secondary depth chart when it drops just before the season.

It remains to be seen how this will actually play out over the course of the season. However, it’s hard to argue with Venables’ assessment. The players who played the most last year are back and should understand the scheme better, which will lead to better performances on the field.

All that’s left is for those returning players to prove their head coach right.

GAME NOTES (PDF): New MexicoColorado State

ODDS: Colorado State -7.5

OVER/UNDER: 35

SP+ PROJECTION: Colorado State by 4.3

FEI PROJECTION: Colorado State by 4.8

PARKER FLEMING PROJECTION: Colorado State has a 58.32% win probability (26.15-23.25)

Colorado State lost another rivalry game last week. This one a 24-12 loss to Air Force. The Rams let the game get away from them in the first half before getting on the scoreboard in the second half. The Rams had multiple opportunities to show something but, like a broken record, couldn’t finish when given the opportunity.

Danny Gonzales is in his third year in charge of the Lobos. Under his stead, the Lobos have amased a 7-23 record. Rocky Long has been the Lobos defensive coordinator and they shown improvement on that side of the ball. However, the offensive side of the ball hasn’t seen similar improvement.

Now to the keys to victory for the Rams.

Three Keys to a colorado state victory

1. Take advantage of what is given to you

Rocky Long’s defenses have alway been tough. So in order to beat them the Rams have to take advantage of what the Lobos’ defense gives them. Whether that’s the underneath routes and a strong running game or they challenge you to beat them over the top, the Rams need to not force the issue.

Against Hawai’i, the Rainbow Warriors started playing three high safeties to take away the deep ball. Jay Norvell and the coaches adjusted to start using underneath routes and it helped them drive down the field to score the winning touchdown. Against the Lobos, the Rams will need to do something similar and take what they give them.

2. Know your assignment OL & communicate

The 3-3-5 defense is basically organized chaos. It’s designed to confuse an offense as a blitz can come from anywhere. Struggling is an understatment when it comes to the Rams OL this year. CSU has given up 55 sacks in 11 games and against a chaos defense they need to step up.

The Rams haven’t started the same line two weeks in a row all season. Now they need to step up and communicate handoffs. They can’t just sit there and block the guy in front of them. The Rams need to keep their heads up and be prepared to peel off and pick up the late blitzer.

3. Have Fun

Tory Horton getting 1,000 yards last week pushed the Rams to eight straight seasons of having a 1,000 yard receiver. Avery Morrow has stepped up in conference play and become a bell cow carrier for the Rams. Clay Millen has a chance to set the CSU single season completion percentage record.

It hasn’t been the best season, but the Rams can finish it out strong. Have some fun with it and show what the offense can be. We’ve seen glimpses and the team reacts positively. If the Rams have some fun with it and can keep the sideline up, this will be a good way to end the season.

what will happen

It’s the end of a long season for both teams and they’re both looking to end it on a high note. The Rams have shown they can be a good team on both sides of the ball, while the Lobos have only shown it on the defensive side. CSU finally breaks out and gets above 20 points for the first time all year.

Final Score: Colorado State 21, New Mexico 14

The Falcons are flying high after securing the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy last week, while also earning Bowl Eligibility with their sixth win of the season. Opposing them Saturday, is a New Mexico Lobo’s team that is reeling to say the least, having lost their sixth straight contest. And as if losing six consecutive games isn’t bad enough, they’ve not even been able to close out a contest within two scores.

If New Mexico wants to end this skid, they’re going to have to do so in Colorado Springs. In case your wondering, they’ve not won at Falcon Stadium in over 20 years, back in 2000. They are just 2-13 playing at “The Springs”. A tall ask for Danny Gonzales’ bunch.

Never shying away from bringing in JUCO players, the Lobos are going to have quite a few starting this week again. None more impactful though, than their transfer from Fresno City Junior College, Justin Holaday, fresh off of his first career start.

Perhaps the change at quarterback can spark a very anemic New Mexico offense on Saturday. They are going to need it facing one of the nations stingiest defenses. The defense that the Falcons will be facing is no pushover either, so they may have their work cut out for them. And let’s be honest, the Lobos defensive coordinator Rocky Long has had success against Troy Calhoun’s bunch. With a 2-3 record in Conference play, there don’t appear to be any hand-outs for Air Force in Mountain West play.

Three Keys to an Air Force Victory

get the offense on track early

For as bad as the Lobos have been this year, the defense has performed quite admirably, especially when you consider the difficult circumstances their offense has put them in. It will be important for Air Force to find its way offensively early in the game to avoid any letdowns.

It’s well documented, the struggles they have had when playing some of the better defenses on their schedule. The Falcons don’t need to do New Mexico any favors by letting them stick around late into the game for an inability to put points on the board. That exactly the kind of blueprint a struggling team follows to an upset.

Leave the scoring ineptitude to the visitors. With the nations top rushing attack and the best running back in the Mountain West, go to work early and make the Lobos stare down a multi-score deficit in the second half. With just three passing touchdowns on the year (and 14 total offensive touchdowns), New Mexico could be looking at a severe beatdown if the Falcons offense is rolling.

dont ignore special teams

In their win over Army, the Falcons were extremely fortunate that a punt wasn’t blocked deep in their own territory. Somehow the kick got off with the defender soaring over the outstretched leg of Carson Bay. And for just the second time this season, there was also a missed field goal attempt off of the steady foot of Matthew Dapore.

The Lobos have one of the best punters to come through Albuquerque, in Aaron Rodriguez. And man, does this guy get a lot of work. He leads the country in punts, which means a whole lot of fair catch opportunities for Air Force if the defense stays strong.

While the Falcons aren’t likely to return many, if any kicks at all, registering a muffed punt turnover would be ill-advised. New Mexico has a punter that can flip field position, so even if your starting a drive near the shadow of your own end zone, it’s much better than handing it over as a red zone try.

no encore for jones

One of the bright spots in last weeks losing effort for the Lobos, was Nate Jones. The talented running back has gotten out of Danny Gonzalez’s dog house it seems, breaking out for almost 150 yards last week against Utah State. This is exactly the kind of performance New Mexico desperately needs to breath some life into their offense.

This is a guy who saw time as a true freshman in 2020, and looked like he could be that next outstanding back that they so desperately have been needing in Albuquerque. He ran for 232 yards and four touchdowns in the COVID shortened season, where he also chipped in on special teams.

After redshirting last year, Jones has now become the primary ball carrier for New Mexico. JUCO transfer, Sherod White and true freshman Chrstian Washington will also see carries throughout the game. If the Lobos are going to push for an upset in this game against Air Force, they are going to need Jones to build on last weeks career best performance.

Prediction

Statistics aren’t always going to dictate the outcome of a game. There are just far too many variables that can come in to play. However, this far into the season, it is fair to conclude were well past single data points. We have arrived at trends. And in nearly every conceivably meaningful statistic, the advantage arrow zeroes in on the home team this week.

For any outcome other than an Air Force win this Saturday, I really believe it will be more about mistakes on the part of the Falcons, or what they aren’t able to do offensively. I’m not sure there is enough offense on the New Mexico sideline to win this game, so short of keeping Air Force out of the endzone altogether, winning will be tough.

I am a believer in the Lobos defense, and they’ve been a more than capable bunch. But the offense has been so woefully bad, it has just made things really difficult for their mates on the other side of the ball, often leaving them in un-winnable situations.

And lets be honest, it’s not as if the Falcons can’t put up points. In fact, if the defense continues to standout, they could heap on the points at Falcon Stadium this weekend. Even with last weeks emotional win, I don’t think it will derail the focus and setup for the kind of monstrous letdown it would take to have the birds fall prey.

Make it five in a row against the Lobos, Air Force wins.

Air Force 31, New Mexico 10

LSU rises into ESPN’s FPI top 10 after win over New Mexico

The Tigers are rising up the ranks while enjoying a 3-0 stretch.

After its third consecutive win, LSU is trending up in the rating systems. It has risen five spots in ESPN’s Football Power Index, now ranking seventh.

In the SEC, only Alabama and Georgia are ranked higher. The Tigers’ 3-1 record ranks 34th in ESPN’s strength of record. Their schedule is about to get a lot tougher, though. According to FPI, LSU has faced the 68th toughest schedule through four games. LSU’s remaining strength of schedule ranks 10th.

It begins this week, with a road trip to Auburn. It’s a down year for the other Tigers, but LSU never has an easy path through Jordan-Hare.

Following the road trip, LSU will return home to host a Tennessee team that will likely be ranked in the top 10.

The next couple of weeks will tell us a lot about who this team is. LSU’s 3-0 stretch has come amidst the security of its home field. LSU will now leave Baton Rouge for the first time since dropping the opener.

LSU still receiving votes in latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

The Tigers doubled their votes to four this week, but they still sit outside the top 25.

The Tigers looked good once again on Saturday night as they won their third-straight game, this time in shutout fashion against New Mexico in the final tuneup before the team begins its main SEC slog.

LSU seems to be improved from Week 1, but it is still likely a big win from finding itself ranked in the top 25. In the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, coach Brian Kelly’s team received four votes, doubling its total from last week. Still, the team sits a bit of a way from the rankings.

As far as the rest of the SEC, Georgia and Alabama remained No. 1 and 2, respectively, while No. 8 Kentucky and No. 9 Tennessee both sit in the top 10 after the latter took down Florida for just the second time since 2004. Ole Miss is up to No. 11, and Texas A&M is up to No. 17 after its big win over Arkansas.

The Razorbacks, meanwhile, fell nine spots to No. 19.

Everything Brian Kelly said after Saturday night’s win over New Mexico

Kelly praised his team and updated the status of some injured players after Saturday night’s 38-0 shutout victory over the Lobos.

The Tigers cruised to an easy win on Saturday night in their first-ever matchup against New Mexico.

LSU held the Lobos off the scoreboard in a 38-0 win, the first shutout the team has registered since the 2018 season. It was a dominant defensive performance as UNM was held under 100 yards of offense, while LSU accounted for more than 600 yards of total offense.

It was a nice tuneup, though the Tigers did walk away with some injuries that Kelly addressed after the game. They may be a bit shorthanded as they continue SEC play next week on the road against Auburn.

Still, it’s hard to find many flaws with LSU’s performance in this one. Here’s what coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] had to say after the game.

The Tigers earned their first shutout since the 2018 season on Saturday night.

The Tigers earned their first shutout win since the 2018 season on Saturday night.

In their Week 4 contest against New Mexico, they thoroughly dominated in a 38-0 victory that gave the team its third-straight win since a disappointing Week 1 loss to the Florida State Seminoles.

You couldn’t ask for a much better game from LSU. It accounted for 633 total yards as [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] was very efficient passing the ball once again, and [autotag]Noah Cain[/autotag] and [autotag]John Emery Jr.[/autotag] headlined a rushing attack that totaled more than 200 yards on the ground.

Meanwhile, it was a futile night on offense for UNM, which was held under 100 yards by a quickly improving LSU defense.

The win gives the Tigers a lot of confidence heading into the bulk of their SEC gauntlet. Next weekend, they hit the road for their first true away game against an Auburn team that narrowly survived at Jordan-Hare Stadium in overtime against Missouri on Saturday.
