Oklahoma vs. Nebraska one of the 10 best nonconference games in the Big 12 in 2022

The second round of the Oklahoma-Nebraska home and home is considered one of the best nonconference games according to Athlon Sports.

It’s crazy to think that we waited a decade to renew one of the best and most historically significant rivalries in college football. By the time October rolls around, Oklahoma vs. Nebraska will go back on the shelf. And no one knows when it will come back.

Enjoy the build-up and anticipation of the 2022 matchup because there’s no telling when it will be back. Kevin McGuire over at Athlon Sports ranked the top 10 nonconference games for the Big 12 in 2022, and OU-Nebraska came in at No. 2.

Here’s what McGuire had to say:

This old Big 8 rivalry was finally renewed last season for the first time since Nebraska left the Big 12 for the Big Ten, and the host Sooners had to come up with some big plays to avoid the big upset from the seemingly overmatched Cornhuskers. This season, an Oklahoma program in some transition could be in for a road battle against a Nebraska team desperate for a signature win. – McGuire, Athlon Sports

Oklahoma and Texas played a hard-fought 23-16 game in Norman in 2021. Spencer Rattler was solid against a tough Nebraska defense, and Eric Gray led the way with 84 rushing yards. The Sooners carried just a 7-3 lead at the half but opened the second half with a touchdown drive, making the score 14-3.

Though Nebraska would come back to score to make it a four-point game, a blocked extra point return by Pat Fields would put the score at seven again. That game also produced one of the best interceptions you’ll ever see from D.J. Graham, who pulled off an incredible one-handed grab on fourth down.

The rematch of the 2021 game sits behind Alabama at Texas for the best nonconference game. That one will be an incredible atmosphere in Austin, providing a preview of what Oklahoma and Texas have to look forward to when they join the SEC.

Nebraska Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Cornhuskers miss from the Big Ten East Division?

What else could you possibly ask for, Nebraska?

Okay, maybe playing Maryland instead of Michigan – and dealing with the Wolverines on the road stinks – but Indiana and Rutgers?

The Huskers get the break of playing the should-be two lightest teams from the East, which means they miss Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan State along with Maryland.

It’s almost as good when it comes to their own division. They have to finish up the regular season at Iowa, but get Minnesota and Wisconsin at home in November.

Nebraska Football Schedule What To Know: There’s one LONG road trip, and then …

And it’s not even technically a road game in Dublin, Ireland against Northwestern to kickoff the Big Ten season. After that, there’s no leaving Lincoln until October 8th with all of September and the early October game against Indiana at home.

Even after that there’s a break. At Rutgers and at Purdue isn’t that bad, but November is a bear. Beating Illinois at home could be a must to finally get to six wins or else there’s a big, big problem with at Michigan, Wisconsin, and at Iowa to close.

Nebraska Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s really not that bad. Depending on how good Michigan is, there isn’t a game on the slate the Huskers can’t win.

The home game against Oklahoma, the road games at Michigan, Purdue, and Iowa, and the Big Ten showdowns against Minnesota and Wisconsin. If Nebraska is any good, it should easily blow past six wins if it can win just two of those six games.

Oklahoma at Nebraska one Football Scoops’ 12 nonconference games to look forward to in 2022

Oklahoma Sooners vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers named one of the most anticipated games of the 2022 nonconference schedule.

The renewal of the Big 8 and Big 12 rivalry between Oklahoma and Nebraska was one of the more anticipated games of the 2021 season. The seven-point win for the Sooners was a throwback to the great defensive performances of the past as the teams slugged away to a 7-3 Sooners lead at halftime.

The two sides will get to do it again in 2022 as part of the home-and-home series. It will be a return to Lincoln for Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners for the first time since Nebraska won a 10-3 slugfest in 2009.

AD Trev Alberts deemed Scott Frost’s 2021 season to be horseshoes and hand grenades, where close enough counted. At some point he’ll have to beat someone, anyone with a pulse, and what an opportunity to reward his administration and his fan base’s faith with a victory over the Big Red’s biggest historic rival, in Lincoln. (NU is 7-1 against OU in Lincoln, dating back to 1989).

How quickly things can change in college football. In last year’s matchup, it was Spencer Rattler vs. Adrian Martinez. Rattler’s now playing for South Carolina and Martinez transferred to Kansas State. Dillon Gabriel looks like the presumptive starter for the Sooners while former Texas quarterback Casey Thompson will likely lead the way for the Cornhuskers in 2022.

As defensive as the Sooners were in 2021, they’re entering a new era of Sooners football as Brent Venables looks to remake the Oklahoma Sooners in his image.

Oklahoma released its 2022 football schedule. The Sooners are set to open Big 12 play at home against Kansas State.

In the midst of a head coaching search, Oklahoma released its finalized 2022 football schedule.

The Sooners open up with non-conference home dates against UTEP on Sept. 3 and Kent State on Sept. 10 before a road contest at Nebraska on Sept. 17.

OU owns a 4-0 all-time mark against UTEP and last played the Miners in 2017 when the Sooners won 56-7. It will be the first-ever meeting between Oklahoma and Kent State.

Oklahoma returns home the following week to take on Kansas on Oct. 15. Then, the Sooners get a bye week before a Thursday date at Iowa State on Oct. 27.

OU opens the month of November with Baylor in Norman on Nov. 5. Oklahoma will follow that game with a trip to West Virginia on Nov. 12.

How to watch, stream, listen to Ohio State vs. Nebraska

Everything you need to know to listen and watch Ohio State football as they travel to Lincoln to take on the Cornhuskers.

Ohio State took care of Penn State in a hard-fought battle under the lights in Ohio Stadium last Saturday. Now they travel to Lincoln to face 3-6 Nebraska.

The Cornhuskers are probably a little better than what their record shows losing to both Michigan and Michigan State by a mere three points each. Their largest margin of defeat was all the way back in the first game of the season, falling to Illinois by just eight points.

Will Ohio State bring its A-game for an early start or will there be a hangover after dispatching the Nittany Lions on national television? At this point in the season, you can bet the Buckeyes will be getting everyone’s best shot.

2 Sooners defenders selected to PFF week 3 award list

Which Sooners were named to the PFF Week 3 Awards List?

Two Sooners have landed on the Pro Football Focus College Football Week 3 Awards List following OU’s 23-16 win over Nebraska on Saturday. Defensive lineman Jalen Redmond was named to the Defensive Team of the Week, and cornerback D.J. Graham was award with Play of the Week honors.

Redmond earned the all-defense nod by PFF following a five tackle, 1.5 sack performance. In fact, the redshirt sophomore recorded the sack on 3rd and 11 right before Graham made the play that broke the internet on fourth down.

Earlier today, John Williams of Sooners Wire broke down Redmond’s performance and explained what his production could do for this Sooners defense.

On Saturday, he recorded his first sack since he led the Sooners in 2019 and finished the day with 1.5 sacks. Redmond added two tackles for loss and was in on 31 of a possible 63 defensive snaps. He showed some burst off the edge in addition to his typical duties rushing inside…Jalen Redmond is starting to turn it on and the Sooners will need every bit of his pass rush prowess to contend as they start their Big 12 slate.

Redmond’s resurgence inside Oklahoma’s defensive line adds another dynamic to an already dangerous unit. OU’s ability to create interior pressure could pay dividends for a team that may need to win games in an ugly fashion in 2021.

D.J. Graham’s Play of the Week selection is sure to be remembered for the rest of the year. Down a pair of starters in the secondary, Graham shook off his previous struggles by making this incredible interception.

With any luck, this interception could spark a fire in the former wide receiver. Oklahoma needs a lockdown corner to pair with its dominant pass rush if the offense continues to lag behind as the Sooners get set for conference play.

3 Players who helped the Oklahoma Sooners knock off Nebraska, 23-16

It wasn’t always pretty, but Oklahoma grabbed the win over Nebraska on Saturday. Here are 3 Sooners who helped them get there.

Many people (myself included) expected Nebraska to buckle under the pressure of Oklahoma’s pass rush in the Sooners’ 23-16 win over the Cornhuskers. That only kind of happened. Ultimately, the Sooners defensive front did seal the win, sacking quarterback Adrian Martinez twice in the final four plays. But not before Nebraska gave OU everything it could handle for the first 59 minutes of the game.

“A win is a win.” And while the Crimson and Cream won’t receive style points for how they took care of business, they finish non-conference play with a spotless 3-0 record.

Here are three Sooners that helped them get there:

Jadon Haselwood, Wide Receiver

Jadon Haselwood caught Spencer Rattler’s first target of the game for a six-yard gain. He would finish with a team-high nine targets while catching two of three contested balls per Pro Football Focus. Through three games, it is evident that Rattler has big plans for the redshirt sophomore this season.

His six receptions against the Cornhuskers were a game-high. Haselwood continues to leave his fingerprints on the Sooners’ passing attack as both a blocker and a receiver.

Up Next: Graham Breaks the Internet

WATCH: Pat Fields takes a blocked Cornhuskers’ PAT back for 2

WATCH: Pat Fields takes a blocked Cornhuskers’ PAT back for 2

It couldn’t have come at a better time.

Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez had just connected with Travis Vokolek for a massive 38 yard gain to knock on Oklahoma’s doorstep. Two plays later, Martinez kept it himself for the score and narrowed the Sooners’ lead to 14-9.

Then Pat Fields happened. Oklahoma’s team captain took advantage of a blocked PAT to snag the momentum right back for the Crimson and Cream.

The result of the play was an unexpected two points for the Sooners as the offense marched down the field on a scoring drive punctuated by Kennedy Brooks.

Oklahoma now leads Nebraska 23-9 with 10 minutes remaining in the game. You can catch the end of Sooners – Cornhuskers on Fox.

Sooners lead Cornhuskers 7-3 after a nondescript first half

The second half between the Sooners and the Cornhuskers is about to begin. Here’s what happened in the first half

There was a lot to love on the first drive of the game. The Sooners marched 75 yards on 14 plays before Spencer Rattler finally broke the goal line to give Oklahoma the lead.

Rattler found six different weapons on the opening drive while Eric Gray found production off outside runs.

With the exception of Nik Bonitto (one sack, two tackles for loss), the Cornhuskers’ biggest enemy has been themselves. Nebraska was called for three false starts and an unnecessary roughness penalty on their first possession, resulting in a field goal for an offense that was threatening to find the endzone.

The biggest takeaway for the Sooners defense has been third-down struggles. Time after time, Nebraska has squeaked through the cracks on third down, sustaining drives and preventing Oklahoma from rekindling its opening drive momentum.

Finally, A missed field goal from Gabe Brkic and miscommunications in the passing game led to the Sooners’ lowest first-half scoring total since 2019.

Oklahoma has a lot to figure out in the second half of this game if they want to maintain their lead.
