Oklahoma vs. Nebraska among On3’s best nonconference games of 2022

Oklahoma’s trip to Lincoln to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers among On3’s best nonconference games of 2022.

It had been 11 long years since the Oklahoma Sooners and the Nebraska Cornhuskers took to the field. Last year’s renewal of one of the best rivalries in college football provided an exciting atmosphere and a throwback defensive battle between the two sides.

Fitting that [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag]’ first Power Five nonconference matchup comes against Nebraska since the last time the two sides played in Nebraska, Venables was still the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma.

They’ll play again in 2022, but this time in Lincoln. In the all-time series, the Sooners carry a 46-38-3 edge, with Oklahoma winning the last two matchups in the contest. Looking ahead to the fall, Mike Huguenin of On3 ranked the best nonconference matchups on the 2022 schedule, and the Sooners vs. the Cornhuskers came in at No. 21 on the list.

Last season’s game, a narrow win by OU, was the first meeting since the 2010 Big 12 championship game. This one will be the first meeting in Lincoln since 2009. This has some intrigue because how good these teams will be is a mystery. Still, there’s no question OU has better talent, and we would not want to be Brent Venables if the Sooners lose his first “big” game. – Huguenin, On3

The game will feature two different quarterbacks than the matchup that pitted [autotag]Spencer Rattler[/autotag] and Adrian Martinez against one another. [autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag] and presumably Casey Thompson will do battle in Lincoln for bragging rights between the two proud programs.

Oklahoma vs. Nebraska one of the 10 best nonconference games in the Big 12 in 2022

The second round of the Oklahoma-Nebraska home and home is considered one of the best nonconference games according to Athlon Sports.

It’s crazy to think that we waited a decade to renew one of the best and most historically significant rivalries in college football. By the time October rolls around, Oklahoma vs. Nebraska will go back on the shelf. And no one knows when it will come back.

Enjoy the build-up and anticipation of the 2022 matchup because there’s no telling when it will be back. Kevin McGuire over at Athlon Sports ranked the top 10 nonconference games for the Big 12 in 2022, and OU-Nebraska came in at No. 2.

Here’s what McGuire had to say:

This old Big 8 rivalry was finally renewed last season for the first time since Nebraska left the Big 12 for the Big Ten, and the host Sooners had to come up with some big plays to avoid the big upset from the seemingly overmatched Cornhuskers. This season, an Oklahoma program in some transition could be in for a road battle against a Nebraska team desperate for a signature win. – McGuire, Athlon Sports

Oklahoma and Texas played a hard-fought 23-16 game in Norman in 2021. Spencer Rattler was solid against a tough Nebraska defense, and Eric Gray led the way with 84 rushing yards. The Sooners carried just a 7-3 lead at the half but opened the second half with a touchdown drive, making the score 14-3.

Though Nebraska would come back to score to make it a four-point game, a blocked extra point return by Pat Fields would put the score at seven again. That game also produced one of the best interceptions you’ll ever see from D.J. Graham, who pulled off an incredible one-handed grab on fourth down.

The rematch of the 2021 game sits behind Alabama at Texas for the best nonconference game. That one will be an incredible atmosphere in Austin, providing a preview of what Oklahoma and Texas have to look forward to when they join the SEC.

Oklahoma at Nebraska one Football Scoops’ 12 nonconference games to look forward to in 2022

Oklahoma Sooners vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers named one of the most anticipated games of the 2022 nonconference schedule.

The renewal of the Big 8 and Big 12 rivalry between Oklahoma and Nebraska was one of the more anticipated games of the 2021 season. The seven-point win for the Sooners was a throwback to the great defensive performances of the past as the teams slugged away to a 7-3 Sooners lead at halftime.

The two sides will get to do it again in 2022 as part of the home-and-home series. It will be a return to Lincoln for Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners for the first time since Nebraska won a 10-3 slugfest in 2009.

AD Trev Alberts deemed Scott Frost’s 2021 season to be horseshoes and hand grenades, where close enough counted. At some point he’ll have to beat someone, anyone with a pulse, and what an opportunity to reward his administration and his fan base’s faith with a victory over the Big Red’s biggest historic rival, in Lincoln. (NU is 7-1 against OU in Lincoln, dating back to 1989).

How quickly things can change in college football. In last year’s matchup, it was Spencer Rattler vs. Adrian Martinez. Rattler’s now playing for South Carolina and Martinez transferred to Kansas State. Dillon Gabriel looks like the presumptive starter for the Sooners while former Texas quarterback Casey Thompson will likely lead the way for the Cornhuskers in 2022.

As defensive as the Sooners were in 2021, they’re entering a new era of Sooners football as Brent Venables looks to remake the Oklahoma Sooners in his image.
