Battle of ex-Notre Dame tight ends in Chicago turns out to be quiet

Two former Notre Dame tight ends faced off in Chicago Sunday.

Notre Dame fans who also follow the NFL may have taken an interest in Sunday’s game between the Carolina Panthers and the Chicago Bears at Chicago’s Soldier Field.

That’s because Bears tight end Cole Kmet was playing against ex-teammate Tommy Tremble, who is now a Panther. Both played tight end at Notre Dame and both saw action during the same season in 2019.

If Fighting Irish fans were hoping to see the two former teammates out-dueling one another, that didn’t happen. Tremble left the game with an apparent concussion after being targeted just twice. He caught one pass for 7 yards, and he fumbled the ball after that reception. It was the same play in which the concussion appeared to happen.

Kmet, meanwhile, was quiet early but eventually he was targeted four times, catching three of those passes for 57 yards, with a long of 26.

Even if the matchup was quiet, it’s a reminder of how many tight ends Notre Dame has sent to the NFL in recent years.

Former Notre Dame QB Book struggles in first NFL start

There will be better days for Book

It was not the best start to former Irish quarterback Ian Book’s NFL career. In fact, he most likely would take a do-over. In a very uninspiring performance, Book did not lead the New Orleans Saint to the end zone.

The first start saw Book complete 60% of his passes (12/20) but for just 138-yards while throwing two interceptions, his second pass was a pick-6 unfortunately. He was sacked eight times for negative 54-yards and only ended up with 6-yards rushing on three carries.

The emergency quarterback was pressed into action due to regular starter Jamies Winston’s season being over due to injury and Taysom Hill being in the COVID-19 protocol.

There hopefully will be better days for Book in the NFL, but this one will sting for a few days.

CBS Sports latest mock projects one Notre Dame player selected in 1st Round

Heading east?

The NFL regular seasons is coming to a close and with many collegiate players making their intentions known for next year, there are going to be mock drafts coming out. CBS Sports has done exactly that, with Josh Edwards projecting where the stars of college football will end up at the next level.

It should come to no one’s surprise that Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton will get selected during the first day of the NFL Draft, but the question is where will he end up. Edwards has the early entry junior heading off to the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia, with the 11th overall selection.

It seems like the Eagles would be getting a steal, as Edwards ranks Hamilton as the top prospect at safety. If he is right, Philadelphia, would be getting a player Edwards says “has an argument as the draft’s best available player.”

Former Notre Dame star gets massive NFL contract

The Vikings reward the former Irish star

Since Harrison Smith has entered the NFL during the 2012 season, he’s been an absolute ball hawk. The former Notre Dame star has registered 28 interceptions, which is second since he’s entered “The League,” behind cornerback Richard Sherman. Smith is first among safeties, which obviously puts him in elite company.

Today, the franchise that drafted Smith, the Minnesota Vikings rewarded his exceptional play with a 4-year, $64 million dollar extension, making him the second highest paid safety in the NFL behind Seattle’s Jamal Adams.

Five-time’s the Pro Bowl has selected Smith, it looks like the star safety could finish his career in the Twin Cities.

It’s a huge coup for Smith and Notre Dame. It just more ammo for Brian Kelly and his recruiting staff to reach out an entice high school player to head towards South Bend.
