What’s Going To Happen

All of a sudden, Arkansas State is right back in it.

The Red Wolves already lost to Louisiana, but if they can win out and get two Ragin’ Cajun losses, they’ll take the West.

Getting bowl eligible first would be nice. There’s a backstop with a layup against South Alabama at the end of the season, but a win takes away some of the drama – it might take seven wins to be guaranteed a bowl somewhere.

Coastal Carolina has lost four of its last five, but with ULM and Texas State to close out, getting two more wins to get to six is possible.

That’s not going to happen against ASU on the road.

The Chanticleer defense has been getting crushed agains the run – allowing 225 yards or more in three of the last four games – and it’s not generating a consistent enough offense to make up for it.

Arkansas State will have a little bit of balance, but it’ll work mostly on the ground for over 200 yards for the third game in a row to get to six wins and bowl eligibility.

Just when it seemed like Georgia Southern was about to grab hold of the Sun Belt East with a massive win over Appalachian State …

Pffffffffft. The air went out of the balloon with a bizarre clunker of a 49-28 loss to Troy.

The Eagles still need a win to go bowling, and there’s a problem if they don’t get it here. Going to Arkansas State will be a problem, and finishing up against Georgia State will be dangerous.

Fortunately, the ULM run defense is a mere suggestion.

The Warhawks were run around and through by Georgia State last week for over 400 yards, and have allowed well over 900 yards with 11 touchdowns in the last three games.

Caleb Evans and the ULM offense will have a whole lot of fun against a Georgia Southern defense that will give up over 200 yards in an interesting back-and-forth battle.

What’s Going To Happen

Now there’s the Texas State passing game.

First year head coach Jake Spavital has been trying to get it all moving with a quick pace and tempo, but the results have been hit-or-miss. Against South Alabama last week, the Bobcats got 373 yards and three scores out of Tyler Vitt in win, and now there’s still hope.

It’s not going to happen, but TXST can still get bowl eligible. Going to Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina will make it tough, but winning in the home finale would be a wonderful step.

Troy has to deal with the Sun Belt’s two best teams to close things out – at Louisiana and against Appalachian State. It has to win two of the last three, so if it loses in San Marcos, forget about going bowling.

The secondary has been getting picked apart too much, but the offense has been working with 273 rushing yards last week in the win over Georgia Southern.

It’s a wildly inconsistent Trojan team, but it’ll get just enough out of sophomore RB DK Billingsley and company to win in a surprisingly fun shootout. Texas State’s offense will work again, but it won’t be come through late.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been a brutal year for South Alabama.

The Jaguars have yet to beat an FBS team, the offense has been rock-steady mediocre, the defense has been rock-steady mediocre, and the program could use a good finishing kick.

Ruining Louisiana’s season would do the trick.

The Ragin’ Cajuns are on a collision course with Appalachian State for the Sun Belt title for the second straight season. they’re on a three-game winning role, and can clinch the West with a win and losses from Arkansas State and ULM.

The running game continues to be special, hitting up almost everyone for 225 yards or more in seven of the last eight games. They’re 7-0 when hitting the mark, and 0-2 when they don’t.

South Alabama, has allowed 225 rushing yards or more just three times, but that’s mostly because so many teams have been bombing away with the passing attack.

Louisiana is on the road, but it’ll control the game from the start on both sides.

The South Carolina Gamecocks (4-6, 3-4 SEC East) and Texas A&M Aggies (6-3, 3-2 West) tangle under the lights at Kyle Field in front of the 12th man at 7:30 p.m. ET Saturday.

South Carolina at Texas A&M: Three things you need to know

1. The Gamecocks are coming off a tough 20-15 non-conference loss to Appalachian State last week, and they’re 1-3 SU/ATS across the past four overall.

2. Technically, Carolina is still alive for a bowl berth, but it needs wins at A&M and against Clemson to go bowling. The Aggies are already eligible for the postseason with six wins under their belt.

3. South Carolina has five wideouts on the injury report this week. WRs Bryan Edwards (lower boy) and Shi Smith (hamstring) are two of the better ones, and they’re expected to play. WRs Chavis Dawkins (hamstring) and OrTre Smith (knee) are bigger question marks, and Josh Vann (hand) is now done for the season. RB Tavien Feaster (groin) is also doubtful, so the Gamecocks really face an uphill climb.

A&M (-455) is a heavy favorite against Carolina (+335) in this one, but you cannot back the Aggies at this price. There is just too much risk and not enough reward. Look to the line instead.

Against the Spread (ATS)

TEXAS A&M (-10.5, -115) is a sensational play based on health alone. South Carolina (+10.5, -106) just has too many injuries to the skill positions. Toss in the fact that USC is 1-4 ATS in the past five on the road, while A&M is 12-5 ATS in the past 17 at Kyle Field and it looks super hard to pass on playing the Aggies.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER (50.5) is worth a small-unit wager as well, and could make for a nice parlay or teaser combined with A&M laying the points. The Under is 4-1 in South Carolina’s past five on the road, and 9-3 in the past 12 on the road against teams with a winning home mark. The Over is 5-0 in A&M’s past five at Kyle, but the Under is 6-2 in its past eight following a bye week.

What’s Going To Happen

Appalachian State can’t clinch the East title, but it can come really, really close if it wins and gets a loss out Georgia Southern vs. ULM.

Georgia State just lost to the Warhawks, but it doesn’t matter. It’s already bowl eligible, and it wins the East by beating ASU, hitting the South Alabama layup, and then taking out Georgia Southern in the finale.

The Panther offense lost star quarterback Dan Ellington to a slight knee injury against ULM. Freshman Quad Brown stepped in and struggled, but the ground attack should still work.

Tra Barnett and company managed over 800 yards over the lat two games, and 340 rushing yards or more in four of the last five games. Now it’ll run into the Appalachian State brick wall of a run defense that got hit hard bye Georgia Southern’s option attack, and nothing else.

ASU’s offense that’s been slightly inconsistent will be fine on the road, the defense will keep Brown from throwing well, and it’ll be another big road win after the 20-15 shocker over South Carolina.

The Wisconsin Badgers (7-2, 4-2 Big Ten West) and Nebraska Cornhuskers (4-5, 2-4) square off in Lincoln Saturday at noon p.m. ET, as the home side is looking to spring the upset and keep its faint postseason hopes alive.

Wisconsin at Nebraska: Three things you need to know

1. After opening the season 5-1 against the spread, the Badgers are 0-3 ATS across the past three. The Badgers allowed just 29 total points over their first six, but have yielded 84 total points in the past three.

2. Badgers RB Jonathan Taylor continues to chug along, posting a Big Ten-best 1,259 rushing yards with 19 total touchdowns. He leads Ohio State’s J.K. Dobbins for the conference title by 59 yards and four touchdowns.

3. Despite allowing 84 total points over the past three, the Badgers are still third in the nation in total yards allowed (233.3) and passing yards allowed (147.0) per game. They’re also seventh in the country with just 12.6 PPG allowed.

Moneyline (ML)

The last time the Badgers (-910) faced off against the Cornhuskers (+445) they were 41-24 winners in Madison back on Oct. 6, 2018. You can expect similar results in this one, as the Huskers just seem to be stuck in neutral. While the Badgers ‘should’ win, remember the Illini game. They fell hard in Champaign when favored by 30.5 points, proving nothing is a guarantee. Avoid the ML when it is more than -160 or -170.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on Wisconsin to win would return a profit of $1.10.

Against the Spread (ATS)

WISCONSIN (-14.5, -106) should come in focused and with a legit chance at a spot in the Big Ten title game should Minnesota slip up in its battle for Floyd of Rosedale at Iowa, as well as its battle Nov. 30 in the Twin Cities vs. these Badgers.

Nebraska (+14.5, -115) shouldn’t offer up much resistance here. While Wisconsin’s 2-5 ATS mark in the past seven road games and 1-4 ATS mark in the past five Big Ten tilts is worrisome, let me quell your concerns. The Huskers are 0-6 ATS in the past six league games and 0-5 ATS in the past five vs. winning sides.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total (50.5) is going to be a close shave, and I really have no lean one way or the other. Wisconsin can pile up the points, but its strength is on the ground which tends to lead to Under results. The Under is 5-1 in the Badgers past six on the road, but the Over is 13-5-1 in the Cornhuskers past 19 inside the Big Ten.

What’s Going To Happen

Middle Tennessee is still in the Conference USA East race … sort of.

It was able to beat Marshall in early October, and it still gets its shot at WKU. It’s an uphill climb, and for now, merely getting bowl eligible would be enough.

The Blue Raiders have to win their last three games with Old Dominion and at WKU to close. Seeing it all go up in smoke against the winless Owls would be brutal.

Rice is feisty and competitive, but it doesn’t score. It only managed more than 20 points twice, have scored 13 points total in the last two games, and it doesn’t have anything to consistently rely on.

Middle Tennessee’s defense has been the issue, and the inconsistent offense isn’t going to be much of a problem.

The Blue Raider ground game will be just enough to get by a low-scoring, ugly game with a whole slew of stalled drives.

What’s Going To Happen

UAB suffered a big setback with a 37-2 loss to Southern Miss last week. It has yet to be a team with any semblance of a pulse – also losing to WKU in Conference USA play – but there’s still time to win the West.

It’s going to take a little bit of luck, and it’s going to take wins over Louisiana Tech and North Texas to get close.

It’s already bowl eligible, and now it’s time to cement a spot.

UTEP has been feisty, it pushed Charlotte in a 28-21 loss last week, and it’s shown a few sparks. However, its defense can’t come up with a decent stop – it’s dead last in the nation in third down defense – and it’s getting nothing out of its lines.

UAB really hasn’t beaten anyone. UTSA is the only team it has beaten with a win over another FBS team, and that win came against UTEP, Rice and Old Dominion, who all haven’t beaten another FBS team.

However at home there’s going to be just enough of a passing game to keep the chains moving in what should be a far more competitive game than the Blazers might like.
