Why Wisconsin Will Win

The Nebraska offense has stopped.

The defense has been hit-or-miss – it wasn’t bad against Minnesota and couldn’t stop Purdue or Michigan – but it struggled way too much to get the O going with fewer than 270 yards in each of the last three games.

The passing attack hasn’t hit much of anything, the ground game isn’t generating enough production, and now it all has to deal with the Wisconsin defense.

The Badgers kept Maryland and Iowa to under 190 yards each – granted, the win over the Terps was in bad weather – but this isn’t the week the Nebraska running game will find itself.

However …

Bowl Projections

Why Nebraska Will Win

It’s not like anyone is mistaking Wisconsin’s offense for Tennessee’s.

The passing attack is struggling to find anything to consistently work. Again, throw out the Maryland game – the wind was crazy – but against everyone else, the Badgers are 0-5 when they don’t connect on at least 60% of their passes.

Nothing good happens when they have to throw.

The Huskers have to get their own passing game rolling right away – just stretch the field a little bit – and on the other side they have to load up against the run. They challenged Minnesota to throw and it almost worked in the 20-13 loss.

Make Graham Mertz try to win this game and good things might happen for the home side. However …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Nebraska has only kept three teams from hitting 60% of their passes and they’re 0-6 when allowing teams to run for more than 175 yards. Wisconsin will do both.

The Badgers have been lousy on the road, but they’ll get past last week’s frustrating loss to Iowa with a balanced day from the offense and a great performance from the D.

Nebraska will have a few big offensive plays, but there won’t be enough of them in the second half.

Wisconsin vs Nebraska Game Preview

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Nebraska isn’t good at shooting the basketball.

It hasn’t been all that awful lately from the field, but the worst shooting team in the Big Ten from three, and it has to keep on bombing away to overcome a defense that doesn’t do enough to stop anyone from generating easy points.

This isn’t a team built to hang with offenses that can move the ball around all that well doesn’t make mistakes. Wisconsin leads the nation in fewest turnovers per game – it’s not going to give the Husker easy points.

Nebraska has allowed teams to hit 49% or better from the field in four of the last five games, but …

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why Nebraska Will Win

Wisconsin isn’t good at shooting the basketball.

It manages to generate plenty of points when needed off of turnovers and with timely plays, but it’s not great from the outside, they’re last in the Big Ten in assists per game, and overall it’s only hitting 42% from the field.

Lately, it’s giving up too many offensive rebounds – a problem in the loss to Michigan State – and Nebraska should be able to generate enough steals and defensive stops to matter.

AP college basketball top 25

What’s Going To Happen

Nebraska will hang around for a wee bit, but the defense is just not doing enough when it’s not forcing turnovers.

Wisconsin will be careful enough with the ball to not give away easy points, and it’ll pull away in the second half when it clamps down on D on the outside.

Nebraska simply won’t make enough contested shots against this group.

Why Wisconsin Will Win

(Forgive this horrific opening line, but it actually fits …)

Wisconsin is consistent in its inconsistency.

(Told you. Very, very, very sorry for that.)

The Badgers aren’t able to come up with the same energy and the same production two games in a row, going win-loss-win-loss-win-loss since mid-January. And why? The offense has been okay in all the losses, but it’s the defensive side that’s not able to come up with the stops.

It couldn’t handle Penn State from the field, and then in the rematch a few games later it more than doubled up the takeaways and won easily.

Illinois nailed everything from the field and won in a walk a few days ago, but Maryland hit a wall in an easy Badger win.

You can’t get in the door against Wisconsin without hitting at least 40% from the field, and the Huskers have only done that twice in the last seven games.

Why Nebraska Will Win

Nebraska might be on a seven-game losing streak and have yet to take home a Big Ten victory, but it’s been great at stopping teams from hitting the three.

Wisconsin’s offense is the Wisconsin offense – it’s not going to walk on the floor and put 85 up on the board – but in this consistently inconsistent run, it’s been winning when hit makes at least 37% of its threes in the last six games, and loses when it makes fewer.

No one has made more than 38% of their threes against Nebraska in any of the last eight games and allowed more just once all year.

What’s Going To Happen

Nebraska might not score.

The Wisconsin defense will clamp down from the word go, it’ll grind the game down to a stop, and Nebraska will have a hard time getting to 65 points, much less 70.

Wisconsin won’t win by 12 like it did in the first meeting, but it’ll keep the recent pattern going with a win.

Wisconsin-Nebraska odds: Cornhuskers big underdogs at home

Previewing Saturday’s Wisconsin Badgers at Nebraska Cornhuskers college football matchup, with NCAA football betting odds, picks and best bets

The Wisconsin Badgers (7-2, 4-2 Big Ten West) and Nebraska Cornhuskers (4-5, 2-4) square off in Lincoln Saturday at noon p.m. ET, as the home side is looking to spring the upset and keep its faint postseason hopes alive.

We analyze the Wisconsin-Nebraska odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Wisconsin at Nebraska: Three things you need to know

1. After opening the season 5-1 against the spread, the Badgers are 0-3 ATS across the past three. The Badgers allowed just 29 total points over their first six, but have yielded 84 total points in the past three.

2. Badgers RB Jonathan Taylor continues to chug along, posting a Big Ten-best 1,259 rushing yards with 19 total touchdowns. He leads Ohio State’s J.K. Dobbins for the conference title by 59 yards and four touchdowns.

3. Despite allowing 84 total points over the past three, the Badgers are still third in the nation in total yards allowed (233.3) and passing yards allowed (147.0) per game. They’re also seventh in the country with just 12.6 PPG allowed.

Prediction

Moneyline (ML)

The last time the Badgers (-910) faced off against the Cornhuskers (+445) they were 41-24 winners in Madison back on Oct. 6, 2018. You can expect similar results in this one, as the Huskers just seem to be stuck in neutral. While the Badgers ‘should’ win, remember the Illini game. They fell hard in Champaign when favored by 30.5 points, proving nothing is a guarantee. Avoid the ML when it is more than -160 or -170.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on Wisconsin to win would return a profit of $1.10.

Against the Spread (ATS)

WISCONSIN (-14.5, -106) should come in focused and with a legit chance at a spot in the Big Ten title game should Minnesota slip up in its battle for Floyd of Rosedale at Iowa, as well as its battle Nov. 30 in the Twin Cities vs. these Badgers.

Nebraska (+14.5, -115) shouldn’t offer up much resistance here. While Wisconsin’s 2-5 ATS mark in the past seven road games and 1-4 ATS mark in the past five Big Ten tilts is worrisome, let me quell your concerns. The Huskers are 0-6 ATS in the past six league games and 0-5 ATS in the past five vs. winning sides.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total (50.5) is going to be a close shave, and I really have no lean one way or the other. Wisconsin can pile up the points, but its strength is on the ground which tends to lead to Under results. The Under is 5-1 in the Badgers past six on the road, but the Over is 13-5-1 in the Cornhuskers past 19 inside the Big Ten.

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Jonathan Taylor continues to be Jonathan Taylor.

He was held in check at times over the previous few weeks, and then he ripped apart a brick wall of an Iowa defense for a season-high 250 yards on 31 carries. The team leaned on its star, and he came up large.

Nebraska’s run defense isn’t miserable, but when teams try to pound away, they don’t have any sort of a problem – Illinois, Minnesota and Ohio State combined for over 900 yards on the ground – and Wisconsin will be more than happy to blast away from the start.

There’s a chance Nebraska never has the ball.

The Huskers try to move with a good tempo and great pace, and they also stall too often and get off the field right away. They’re 113th in the nation in time of possession – keeping the ball for just over 27 minutes per game.

Wisconsin is No. 1 in the nation in time of possession, keeping it for almost 37 minutes per outing. But …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Nebraska Will Win

Wisconsin had the ball for over 41 minutes against Illinois, and lost.

The Badger defense might be incredible overall, but it allowed more than 100 rushing yards or more twice – and lost both games.

Nebraska ran for 98 yards against South Alabama in the opener, and ripped off 128 yards or more against everyone else.

Wisconsin has been a killer at home, but lost on the road to Illinois and Ohio State in two of its last three games, and it struggled to put away Iowa at home last week.

It’s possible to hit the Badger secondary with big plays. Iowa got back into the game through the air, Michigan bombed away a bit in its loss, and when Ohio State tried to throw, it didn’t have a problem.

The Nebraska offense might not be steady, but the passing game has been working just fine lately. Expect a few home runs hit by Adrian Martinez, but …

[lawrence-related id=498866]

What’s Going To Happen

How good has Jonathan Taylor been against Nebraska? In two games, he’s been able to crank out 470 yards and five touchdowns.

The Wisconsin defense will have a few meltdowns against a Nebraska offense that has just enough pop to be a wee bit of a concern, but Taylor will go off, and QB Jack Coan will hit third down throw after third down throw.
