College Football: ACC kickoff times to be released this week

We know who Notre Dame is playing in weeks one and two and on what days, but we’re about to find out at what time those will be.

We all know who Notre Dame will play in the first two weeks of the 2020 college football season, but when those games kickoff is another story.

Duke will come to Notre Dame Stadium on September 12 while South Florida will take the field a week later.  Now according to a report from 247Sports, we’re about to find out what time those games will kickoff.

From the 247Sports report:

Kickoff times and television information for more than 25 games involving Power 5 teams will be announced next week, an industry source tells 247Sports.

The first and second weeks of the ACC schedule will be finalized with kickoff times and television information next week, the source said. The Big 12’s slate of 10 non-conference games set for Sept. 12 will also be announced next week.

The Southeastern Conference does not begin the season until Sept. 26. Kickoff times for the SEC’s Week 1 games are expected to be announced in less than two weeks.

We do know that all Notre Dame home games will still air on NBC and with the level of opposition, I’d imagine you see Duke in the normal 3:30 p.m. ET time slot while I’d guess that USF’s trip gets the slightly earlier kickoff time of 2:30 p.m. ET.

As for the rest of the season, time will tell but I’d be pretty shocked if things don’t ultimately workout like they did last season with only one night game. That would obviously be the Clemson game on November 7, but if there were to be a second it’d be the Florida State game on October 10 as the Seminoles could also be unbeaten if they can get by Miami on September 26.

Why Notre Dame thinks they can pull football off in 2020

Notre Dame has had very few positive COVID-19 tests in the last two months and thinks football is still possible. Find out why, here.

With roughly 40% of FBS college football pulling the plug on the 2020 fall season, Notre Dame and the ACC remain scheduled to start games a month from today.

On the day Notre Dame opens fall training camp, the morning kicked off with Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly and start outside linebacker Daelin Hayes appearing on NBC’s Today Show.

The entire interview between Craig Melvin and both Kelly and Hayes can be seen in full below.

The biggest quotes from both were Kelly strongly sharing that “we believe we can play” as he detailed how thorough Notre Dame has been in using precaution to try and keep COVID-19 as far away from campus as possible.

Hayes shares his belief that essentially, if there is added risk in anything we do anymore, why not at least do what what we enjoy while being exposed to those risks, especially if players are under constant supervision and given weekly tests, like he says.

Full video of interview:

I get both sides of the argument as to whether or not there should be games played and practices held.

If someone with COVID-19 plays football against a bunch of healthy young men then it’s inevitable that the between the blood, sweat, spit and whatever else gets passed along, that the virus will spread.

But if the players, coaches and staff have followed through with a plan and things have gone incredibly successful like they have, I have trouble with the thought that they don’t deserve at least a chance to play, until they prove they don’t.

I know we’re talking about a lot of 18-22 year old student-athletes and the mind of someone that age doesn’t always make the best of decisions.  So far protocols appear to have been followed with great success.

It’s easy to understand why the players and coaches believe they can pull this off, even while acknowledging the difficulty of the situation.  Obviously things can change in a moments notice with this like they’ve been doing nationwide for months, but until that time comes I fully see why the players and coaches so badly at least want a chance.

Report: Fox Sports signs Seahawks TE Greg Olsen to be future NFL analyst

Fox Sports has signed current Seattle Seahawks tight end Greg Olsen to be a future NFL analyst with the network when he retires from the NFL.

Seahawks tight end Greg Olsen hasn’t even stepped on the field in a Seattle uniform and he’s already looking ahead to the next step in his career. Olsen has inked a deal with Fox Sports to become their future No. 2 NFL game analyst, according to Andrew Marchand of the New York Post.

Olsen signed a one-year, $7 million deal with the Seahawks this spring to add a valuable veteran presence to the tight end corps. All indications are that he is still set to play, yet preparing for his next move when his football days are over.

Per Marchand, Olsen will eventually partner with Kevin Burkhardt on game days.

Olsen’s agreement for future employment is similar to the arrangement current Saints quarterback Drew Brees has with NBC. Broadcast partners around the NFL have been eyeing potential soon-to-be-former players to add to their lineup.

For now, Olsen with partner with Russell Wilson and Co. on Sundays, hoping to lead the Seahawks to another world championship.

Report: FOX lands future deal with Greg Olsen to be analyst on No. 2 NFL team

FOX Sports has added Greg Olsen to its NFL broadcast roster, in a signing pointing to the future.

Greg Olsen surprised some when he decided to continue his NFL career, signing with the Seattle Seahawks as a free agent. He was a coveted free agent when it came to the broadcast booth.

He’s no longer on the market, per a New York Post report.

The veteran tight end, who has played with the Chicago Bears and Carolina Panthers, will partner with Kevin Burkhardt on the second team for FOX when he calls it a career. The No, 1 team, of course, is the great tag-team of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman

The contract will make Olsen the partner for Kevin Burkhardt after Olsen retires from the NFL. Olsen, 35, was going to leave the game for Fox after last season, but a $7 million contract and a chance to play with Russell Wilson made him change his mind to go to Seattle.

FOX has been a huge fan of Olsen as a booth candidate. He has done in-season games for the network, whether through injuries or bye weeks. He also did a bang-up job on XFL games, while that league lasted.

Andrew Marchand of the Post, who broke the news, compares the signing to NBC landing New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees.

The move to think ahead is similar to what NBC has done with Drew Brees. The Post previously reported that Brees has a deal with the network after his retirement from the Saints to call Notre Dame games and work NBC’s Sunday night NFL studio show with the chance to one day succeed Cris Collinsworth in the booth.

FOX will team Daryl “Moose” Johnston with Burkhardt in 2020. The position opened when Charles Davis left for a similar position at CBS.

Notre Dame President Non-Committal About Football in 2020

Notre Dame President Father John Jenkins addressed the school’s plan to open up August 10 and shared his thoughts of football in 2020.

The University of Notre Dame created quite the stir nationwide on Monday when they announced that the school would welcome back students to campus in August.

It didn’t come without plenty of questions, however.  To give more clarity on Notre Dame’s plan to return students to campus, why the adjusted schedule and if there will be football this fall, Notre Dame President, Father John Jenkins appeared on NBC’s TODAY Show Tuesday to help give more clarity.

[protected-iframe id=”a57633139808e681caeff27e3e8859e8-162776928-7793168″ info=”https://www.today.com/today/embedded-video/mmvo83630149553″ width=”560″ height=”315″ frameborder=”0″ scrolling=”no” allowfullscreen=””]

Jenkins didn’t have all the answers, something he freely admitted and I’m sure the short “I don’t have all the details yet” won’t fly for a good amount of people but he did give a strong explanation as to why the schedule has been adjusted to have an extended break after Thanksgiving through New Years.

Jenkins non-commitment to football and sports being played in the fall is also somewhat surprising to me.  I wasn’t expecting a full “Games will be played and fans will be in the stands!” but Jenkins came off more reserved than I was thinking he would.

Hopefully it’s just Jenkins being cautious with words and trying to not have anything come back to bite him down the road.  After NCAA President Mark Emmert’s comments that sports wouldn’t be played if students weren’t on campus though, this is a good first step.

How Did Drew Brees Perform vs. Notre Dame?

There was one thing Brees never did in his time with the Boilermakers, though, and that’s win at Notre Dame Stadium.  Here’s the Drew Brees career stat-lines versus the Fighting Irish:

In the wake of the news Drew Brees is heading to NBC Sports and having a role on Notre Dame telecasts once he retires from the NFL, I was curious how Brees fared against Notre Dame in his memorable time at Purdue.

Brees led Purdue to only their second appearance in a Rose Bowl back in 2000, a year he should have been awarded the Heisman Trophy over Chris Weinke if we’re being honest.  There was one thing Brees never did in his time with the Boilermakers, though, and that’s win at Notre Dame Stadium.  Here’s the Drew Brees career stat-lines versus the Fighting Irish:

Three starts (1998, 1999, 2000)
1-2 win/loss record
60/98 passing, 799 yards, five touchdown passes, four interceptions, one rushing touchdown

The games:
1998 – Notre Dame 31, Purdue 30
Notre Dame fell behind 14-0 and trailed 30-21 with under eight minutes to play before a Jim Sanson field goal with under a minute left eventually won it for the Irish.
Brees:  24 of 26 for 261 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions

1999 – Purdue 28, Notre Dame 23
Notre Dame jumped out to a 10-0 lead in West Lafayette before Brees guided the Boilermakers to victory.  He finished the afternoon with a rushing touchdown, a passing touchdown and ran in a two point conversion in the Purdue victory.
Brees:  24 of 40 passing for 317 yards, one touchdown pass, one interception and a two point conversion run

2000 – No. 21 Notre Dame 23, No. 13 Purdue 21
In Godsey We Tust…as long as the defense plays ridiculously well. That’s what happened on this afternoon in 2000 when a Shane Walton pick-six of Brees put the Irish up 14-0 in the first quarter.  The Irish wouldn’t find the end-zone again that afternoon but three Nick Setta field goals, one of which came as time expired, did the eventual Big Ten Champions in.
Brees:  13 of 22 passing for 221 yards, two touchdowns and one interception
