5 former Oregon Ducks selected in 2022 XFL Draft

Five former Oregon Ducks, including wide receiver Jaylon Redd and defensive back Mykael Wright, were selected in the 2022 XFL Draft.

The rebirth of the XFL after a nearly twenty year hiatus didn’t go so well in 2020, thanks almost entirely to COVID-19 which ended the season prematurely.

Shortly after the season’s end, legal issues between Oliver Luck and Vince McMahon ultimately killed the reboot after less than one full season. But new ownership – backed by movie star Dwayne Johnson – has the league on track to restart again in February of 2023.

Things are starting to really come together now that the XFL draft took place earlier this week, just a few days after each team was assigned a pair of quarterbacks to begin the season.

While names like AJ McCarron and Ben Dinucci will grab the headlines, there are a lot of other extremely talented football players set to participate in the XFL this year – including five former Oregon Ducks, each who were selected during the position group portions of the XFL draft.

Below is a look at each player selected, and where they are set to play starting in a few months:

5 players trying out for Broncos at mandatory minicamp

Max Borghi is among five players trying out for the Broncos this week.

The Denver Broncos kicked off mandatory minicamp on Monday with five extra players on the practice field.

The Broncos are trying out five players at camp this week, according to Aric DiLalla of the team’s official website. Here’s a quick look at each of the five tryout players.

Mykael Wright invited to rookie minicamp with Seattle Seahawks

Former Oregon Ducks DB Mykael Wright is joining the Seattle Seahawks at rookie minicamp this week in an effort to secure an NFL contract.

The 2022 NFL draft only featured one Oregon Ducks player, Kayvon Thibodeaux, as the rest of the draft hopefuls instead begin their pro careers as undrafted free agents.

Verone McKinley III and CJ Verdell, who many believe deserved to be selected during the festivities, quickly signed deals with Miami and Indianapolis, respectively.

One of the biggest mysteries was surrounding defensive back Mykael Wright. While many felt Wright should have stayed at Oregon one more season, it was still a surprise to see the draft conclude without his name being called.

It was even more surprising to see multiple days pass by before he even got invited to rookie minicamp, which finally happened on Monday afternoon when a report from James Crepea of The Oregonian indicated he was headed to Seattle to join their mini-camp this week.

Wright doesn’t have a contract, just a glorified tryout, but his ability to contribute on the special teams should help land him a spot in training camp somewhere around the NFL – potentially in Seattle if they like what they see from him this week.

Chargers had pre-draft meeting with Oregon CB Mykael Wright

The Chargers met with an undersized yet competitive cornerback.

The Chargers will be looking to the draft to solidify their secondary.

According to The Draft Network’s Justin Melo, Los Angeles had a virtual meeting with former Oregon cornerback Mykael Wright.

Wright posted 103 tackles, 17 passes defended, four tackles for loss, and two interceptions during his three seasons with the Ducks.

While not imposing at 5-foot-11 and 182 pounds, Wright possesses good awareness, fluid movement skills, solid ball skills, and physicality facing bigger receivers and in the run game.

Furthermore, Wright has three years of success as a kickoff returner, with 35 returns for 982 yards (28.1 yards per return) and two touchdowns.

The 2022 NFL draft is less than one month away, meaning that the Baltimore Ravens will be able to add plenty of talented playmakers to their team. Baltimore currently has 10 draft picks in this month’s draft, including nine in the first four rounds.

The Ravens have plenty of needs to fill, even after signing players such as safety Marcus Williams, offensive lineman Morgan Moses and defensive lineman Michael Pierce. The draft will be key for the team round out the rest of their roster with rookies that can contribute at a high level both right away and in the future.

Below we look at a full seven-round mock draft for Baltimore.

Oregon’s Mykael Wright may surprise, if Cowboys return to CB well in draft

Not wanting to endure a third set of collegiate coaches, Wright declared for the NFL. Tyler Browning (@DiabeticTyler) investigates whether he’d be a diamond in the rough for the Cowboys.

Oregon CB Mykael Wright wasn’t exactly looking to leave the collegiate ranks. With eligibility remaining, instability at the coaching position combined with an NFL-ready skillset inspired him to leave the Ducks early. However with Mario Cristobal leaving the west coast the head the University of Miami program, Wright decided to take his talents to an even bigger stage.

He appears to be a long-armed corner who would fit the old Dan Quinn scheme perfectly. Wright had a decent career at Oregon, where he served as both a kick returner and a starting cornerback. He played in all 14 games as a freshman and had two kick return touchdowns, As a sophomore he had nine pass deflections in the truncated seven-game season. While the Dallas Cowboys has gone to the cornerback well several times on Day 2 recently, could they dip into the position yet again?

Day 4 winners, losers as DBs close out 2022 combine, Texas boys dominate

Tyler Browning (@DiabeticTyler) talks about who out of the CBs and safeties saw their stock rise fall as Texas colleges took center stage.

The 2022 NFL combine has officially come to its end. On Sunday defensive backs and special teams took the field and showcased their talents. The Dallas Cowboys saw Trevon Diggs take a massive Year-2 leap, while they didn’t see much from Day 2 rookies Kelvin Joseph and Nahshon Wright. While Anthony Brown is under contract through the next year, Jourdan Lewis is under contract until 2023. It is not out of the realm of possibilities to see the Cowboys go corner yet again at some point in the draft.

Meanwhile, the club is barren at safety once again. Starters Damontae Kazee and Jayron Kearse, along with rotational safety Malik Hooker were all one-year rentals. Donovan Wilson enters the final year of his deal. So who saw their stock rise on the last day of the combine? Who saw it fall?

Teams will now head back to their respective headquarters to get their draft boards in sync and get ready to send scouts out to school’s pro days. Pro days are also an important time in the evaluation process, as some players elect not to work out at the combine and rather wait for their pro day. But for those who did show up in Indy, here’s the winners and losers from the final day of workouts.

Mykael Wright still isn’t over the Pac-12 refs in Oregon’s loss to Stanford

Do you remember the numerous crazy flags at the end of Stanford vs. Oregon that cost the Ducks the game? Mykael Wright does, and he isn’t over it.

[jwplayer JYsUO2iH]

Hopefully by now, you’ve been able to move on from the Oregon Ducks’ brutal loss to the Stanford Cardinal back at the start of October. At the time, the No. 3 Ducks fell to the unranked Cardinal on the road, 31-24 in OT after a game where offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead was sidelined due to a medical emergency, and RB CJ Verdell was lost for the season with a dislocated ankle and broken fibula.

The loss felt like Oregon coming back to earth after their triumphant win over Ohio State earlier in the year, and while they were able to bounce back and win 5-straight games after, it was still a tough one to swallow, particularly for how it happened.

If you’ll remember, the Pac-12 referees were characteristically bad in that game. With the Ducks leading 24-17 late in the game, Stanford was trying to drive for a game-tying touchdown. A bogus roughing-the-passer penalty on Kayvon Thibodeaux and a completely missed false-start on Stanford gave the Cardinal a goal-to-go opportunity from the 4-yard line with less than 10 seconds left. That’s when the most egregious call of all came.

With no time on the clock, CB Mykael Wright was called for a holding penalty in the endzone, giving Stanford one untimed down, where they were able to convert and tie the game, sending it to OT. We know what happened then, with the Ducks being sent packing after their first loss of the season.

It’s a swinging doors moment for Oregon in the 2021 season and something that Wright is still not over.

Now that Wright is heading off to the NFL, he may soon be able to put that memory past him, but it’s fair to still be salty about a victory being snatched away from you. I know that many Oregon fans can agree.

Kayvon Thibodeaux leads six Ducks to be invited to the NFL combine

Six former Oregon football players have been invited to participate in the NFL combine event in Indianapolis March 1-7.

The Oregon Ducks football program has been through a lot over the course of the last two or three months, so a little bit of normalcy is welcomed.

It’s that time for the NFL combine and six Ducks have been invited to participate in the event that will be held in Indianapolis March 1-7. Led by defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux, the Ducks have a nice group of offensive and defensive stars hoping to improve their draft stock.

Among those looking to show what he can do is running back CJ Verdell. The all-conference performer was most likely a second-round draft pick before he injured his knee. Now with the combine, Verdell can show scouts that he is fully recovered and able to help a team win immediately.
