Ravens sign OLB, waive two players

The Ravens signed an outside linebacker and waived two players

The Baltimore Ravens have to get their roster down to 85 players by Tuesday, a tough task considering how much depth they currently have. They took two steps towards doing that on Saturday by waiving two players, but also signed one in the process.

Baltimore announced that they signed former New York Giants outside linebacker Trent Harris while also waiving wide receiver Devon Williams and defensive back Denzel Williams. The moves come just two days after the team’s 23-10 win over the Tennessee Titans in Week 1 of the 2022 preseason, in which both Williams’ saw action.

Harris signed with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent following the 2018 draft. He spent the 2018 season in New England on their practice squad, but was cut at the end of 2019 training camp. He’s also spent time with the Miami Dolphins and most recently the New York Giants. In 19 total games across three seasons, Harris has totaled 34 tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble.

Williams signed with Baltimore as an undrafted free agent out of Oregon as a wide receiver, and was put on the reserve/did not report list after training camp began. He was reinstated from the list a few days later, and caught one pass for eight yards against the Titans in Week 1 of the preseason.

Williams also signed with the Ravens as an undrafted free agent, coming from Villanova as a defensive back. He did not register any statistics in the team’s Week 1 against Tennessee.

Ravens reinstate WR Devon Williams to 90-man roster

The Ravens reinstated wide receiver Devon Williams to the 90-man roster

The Baltimore Ravens have opted not to bring in a veteran option at the wide receiver position throughout the course of the 2022 offseason so far, despite trading away their No. 1 wideout in Marquise Brown on draft night. They also didn’t select anyone at the position over draft weekend, so assuming Baltimore doesn’t add another pass catcher before the start of the regular season, plenty of young players will have opportunities to go out and earn snaps for themselves.

Some of the players vying for snaps as well as roster spots are the number of undrafted wide receivers that the team signed and clearly has confidence in. One of those players in former Oregon star Devon Williams was added to the reserve/did not report list on Wednesday ahead of training camp, but on Friday the team reinstated him, adding the wideout back to the 90-man roster.

Williams is a big-bodied receiver, standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing around 205 pounds. He was productive over his last two college seasons, and finished his entire collegiate career with 55 catches for 941 yards and seven touchdowns.

He will be competing with others undrafted pass catchers such as Shemar Bridges, Makai Polk and Slade Bolden for a potential spot on Baltimore’s final 53-man roster.

Ravens make three roster moves ahead of 2022 training camp

The Ravens made three roster moves ahead of 2022 training camp

The Baltimore Ravens drafted 11 different players in the 2022 NFL draft, adding both star power and quality depth pieces to their team. However, not one of those 11 selections was a wide receiver, which came as a shock to many, especially considering the team traded away their top wideout in Marquise Brown.

Baltimore ended up signing multiple undrafted free agent wide receivers at the conclusion of the draft, including Shemar Bridgers, Makai Polk, Devon Williams, Slade Bolden and others. However, the Ravens placed Williams on the Reserve/Did Not Report list on Wednesday in a move that was a surprise and very unexpected. They also placed undrafted rookie running back Ricky Person Jr. on the Exempt/Left Squad list, and wide receiver Binjamin Victor on the non-football injury list.

It’s currently unclear what the situations behind each of the moves is, but both Williams and Person were expected to compete for roster spots. Baltimore opens up two roster spots with the moves.

Williams totaled 55 receptions for 941 yards and seven touchdowns over the course of his four-year college career at Oregon, while Person rushed 455 times for 1,979 yards and 14 touchdowns at NC State.

He didn’t hear his name called during the 2022 NFL Draft, but that doesn’t mean that Devon Williams won’t get a chance to prove himself at the next level.

Now that the draft is over, Williams has been signed by the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent. He will now go through training camp with the Ravens and work to earn a roster spot going into the fall.

Though the dream is to get drafted, obviously, there are a number of highly successful NFL players who have gone the route of a UDFA in order to find a way into the league. Most notably, guys like Wes Welker, Tony Romo, London Fletcher, and Michael Bennett all had legendary careers after going undrafted.

In his four seasons at the college level, Williams had 55 catches for 941 yards and seven touchdowns. He spent his first two seasons with the USC Trojans but transferred to Oregon after his sophomore season. At 6-foot-5, 205 pounds, Williams projects to be a solid receiving threat at the next level.

With Baltimore, Williams will have an opportunity to earn a roster spot and playing time as a receiver is a major need for the Ravens. With his size, Williams should see the field in 2022.

Kayvon Thibodeaux leads six Ducks to be invited to the NFL combine

Six former Oregon football players have been invited to participate in the NFL combine event in Indianapolis March 1-7.

The Oregon Ducks football program has been through a lot over the course of the last two or three months, so a little bit of normalcy is welcomed.

It’s that time for the NFL combine and six Ducks have been invited to participate in the event that will be held in Indianapolis March 1-7. Led by defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux, the Ducks have a nice group of offensive and defensive stars hoping to improve their draft stock.

Among those looking to show what he can do is running back CJ Verdell. The all-conference performer was most likely a second-round draft pick before he injured his knee. Now with the combine, Verdell can show scouts that he is fully recovered and able to help a team win immediately.

Transfers and opt-outs drastically alter an enticing Oregon vs. Oklahoma Alamo Bowl matchup

Opt-outs and transfers have changed what once looked like an extremely entertaining matchup between Oregon and Oklahoma in the Alamo Bowl.

This particular matchup would be vastly different if it were to be played in September.

Both Oregon and Oklahoma will be going into the Alamo Bowl a bit shorthanded. Opting out of bowl games or transferring out is becoming a common occurrence in college football and these two teams were not immune.

Oregon’s biggest loss will be defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux, who is expected to be a high first-round NFL draft pick in 2022.

Oklahoma benched its starting quarterback Spencer Rattler in the middle of the season, so he is currently looking for another school to finish out his collegiate career. The Sooners will also be missing their all-conference linebacker Nik Bonitto and his seven sacks, 19.5 in his career.

While both schools will still field teams and kick-off in San Antonio on Wednesday, it won’t look like the normal teams we’ve seen all year. Here are some of the players who won’t participate following opt-outs or transfers.

Cornerback Mykael Wright declares for the NFL draft; skips Alamo Bowl

All-conference corner and return specialist Mykael Wright has declared for the NFL draft and will skip the Alamo Bowl.

Oregon fans might need a program to figure out who is on the field for the Ducks during the Alamo Bowl.

Cornerback Mykael Wright becomes another Duck football player that has declared for the NFL draft and will skip the bowl game.

Wright joins defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux and receiver Devon Williams as players who have decided to end their Oregon careers. Offensive lineman Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu also announced he’ll forego his senior season for the draft but will travel to San Antonio and play for the Ducks one last time.

The Oregon cornerback ends his career playing in 34 games with 111 tackles, 79 solo and two interceptions. Wright burst onto the scene in his freshman year when he returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, including one against USC in the Coliseum.

Wright was a three-time All-Conference honoree and was a Freshman All-American.

Oregon’s Devon Williams declares for the NFL; opts out of the Alamo Bowl

Oregon’s leading WR Devon Williams is the latest Duck football player to opt out of the bowl game and declare for the NFL draft.

Oregon Ducks wide receiver Devon Williams has announced that he will forego his senior season and declare for the NFL draft.

Williams will also skip the Alamo Bowl in his preparations for the next level.

In the post, he thanked former Duck coach Mario Cristobal, passing game coordinator, and interim head coach Bryan McClendon and academic counselors.

Once a five-star recruit, Williams was considered the top athlete in the country when he committed to USC in 2018. In his one season as a Trojan, Williams played in all 12 games that season, catching four passes for 87 yards with a touchdown.

Williams then entered the transfer portal and it was thought the 6-foot-5, 207-pounder from Lancaster, Calif. was going to end up in Corvallis before settling on Eugene to be a Duck.

He spent two seasons at Oregon where he caught 50 passes for 843 yards and six touchdowns. Ironically, Williams’ best game was against the Beavers three weeks ago where he caught six passes for 110 yards and a touchdown.

With Williams opting out of the bowl game, the Ducks are suddenly thin at the position. Mycah Pittman transferred and Johnny Johnson III is injured. The top receiver remaining is freshman Kris Hutson and his 25 catches for 364 yards and one touchdown.

WATCH: Anthony Brown throws a dime to Devon Williams to extend lead

This pass from Anthony Brown to Devon Williams might have been Oregon’s best of the year. Perfect ball.

Where was this offensive execution last week?

Oregon is making the OSU defense look silly in the early going as the Ducks are running the playbook to perfection.

The Ducks made it 14-0 over the Beavers as Anthony Brown hit wide receiver, Devon Williams, for a 50-yard score. It was on a third-and-3 and Brown had Travis Dy open in the flat, but he elected to throw the ball deep.

Williams was able to get free from the Beaver defender and watched the nice long ball drop softly into his hands. So far, Brown has is 5-of-6 passing for 90 yards. If Oregon wins this, the Ducks will face Utah again in the Pac-12 title game.

Ducks Depth Chart Preview: Experienced wide receiver group buoyed by talent-rich freshman class

With a solid mix of experienced veterans and high-ceiling freshmen, the Ducks are stacked at the WR position going into 2021 season.

If your goal is to find the position group with the most depth and the highest ceiling on the Oregon Ducks roster, it’s hard to look past the wide receivers.

With a trio of veteran players ready to lead the group, plus a couple of true freshmen that could potentially emerge as the most talented players on the field, the Ducks will likely have no problems with the passing game this season, assuming that quarterback Anthony Brown is all that we expect him to be.

Spread across three positions, we can expect a lot of rotating for Oregon as they look to stay fresh and get all of their talents on the field. So how will the depth chart fill out across the board? Here’s our prediction, with a breakdown of each player.
