2020 NFL MVP Odds: Is Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette worth a bet?

Analyzing the betting odds to be named the NFL’s 2020 MVP, with a look at whether Leonard Fournette is worthy of a bet this season.

Do you think Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette has what it takes to win the 2020 NFL MVP? Let’s examine his chances, the BetMGM NFL futures odds around it happening and whether or not Fournette is worth a bet.

Recent NFL MVP winners

Running backs used to frequently be MVP candidates, however, they have slipped from consideration in the modern pass-happy NFL. The last seven MVPs and 12 of the last 13 have been quarterbacks. Only four running backs have been named MVP since 2000.

Adrian Peterson was the last running back to do it in 2012. He threatened the NFL single-season rushing record coming off a torn ACL and finished with 2,097 rushing yards, leading the Minnesota Vikings to the playoffs with Christian Ponder at quarterback.

Before that, Shaun Alexander and LaDainian Tomlinson won it in consecutive years in 2005 and 2006 when they both set NFL records for touchdowns in a season. Marshall Faulk was the other in 2000 when he rushed for 1,359 yards and set the single-season record for touchdowns that year with 26.

For a running back to win MVP, it has taken a special season.

Fournette is a long shot. Among the 60 players with odds, he and seven other players are listed at +15000. The other players are Los Angeles Chargers DE Joey Bosa, Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, Chicago Bears QB Nick Foles, Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins, Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew (Fournette’s teammate), and rookie QBs Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert.

Leonard Fournette’s stats

Fournette had a career-high 1,152 rushing yards in 2019. It was the second time in his three-year career he rushed he topped 1,000 yards. He scored only three total touchdowns for a bad Jaguars team, and the Jags are not expected to be competitive in 2020.

Is Fournette worth a 2020 NFL MVP bet?

There is nothing in Fournette’s career to suggest he will have the type of season that has been required from a running back to win MVP. His team will not be good in 2020 and he will be productive but not special. The potential payout is huge, but it would just be throwing away money. Fournette IS NOT worth a 2020 NFL MVP bet.

2020 NFL MVP Odds: Is Nick Chubb worth a bet?

Analyzing the betting odds to be named the NFL’s 2020 MVP, with a look at whether Nick Chubb is worthy of a bet this season.

Do you think Cleveland Browns RB Nick Chubb has a shot at winning the 2020 NFL MVP?

Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson took home the goods as the 2019 NFL MVP, a player Chubb and the Browns play two times every season in the grind of the AFC North Division. Chubb and the Browns failed to live up to lofty preseason odds a year ago, floundering in another sub-.500, non-playoff season after entering with plenty of fanfare after significant offseason additions. Now the Browns find themselves with yet another new coach, another new general manager, etc. …

Let’s examine Chubb’s MVP chances, the BetMGM NFL futures odds around it happening and whether or not Chubb is worth a bet.

Recent NFL MVP winners

Jackson was impressive in rolling to the MVP award in 2019, following Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, the 2018 winner. In fact, quarterbacks have had a monopoly on the award recently, taking the trophy in seven straight seasons, and 12 of the past 13. The good news for Chubb and others at his position, running back was the last position other than quarterback to be named MVP when RB Adrian Peterson, then of the Minnesota Vikings, won in 2012. Running backs also won in consecutive seasons with Shaun Alexander (2005) and LaDainian Tomlinson (2006).

Nick Chubb’s 2020 NFL MVP odds

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Friday, March 27 at 11:15 p.m. ET.

Chubb (+8000) is tied with Oakland Raiders RB Josh Jacobs for the sixth-best odds on the board among running backs, but that’s still a rather hefty long shot. Add in the fact that RB Kareem Hunt, a former MVP candidate, is also in the Browns backfield, and Chubb should see his touches curtailed somewhat. That won’t help Chubb’s chances to really explode and post 2,000 total scrimmage yards, which seems to be the minimum requirements for MVP consideration.

Looking to place a bet on the 2020 NFL MVP? Place your legal sports wagers online at BetMGM. Bet now!

Nick Chubb’s stats

Chubb completed his second NFL season in 2019 with 1,494 rushing yards (5.0 yards per attempt) and eight rushing scores with 36 grabs for 278 yards and no scores. He did lose three fumbles total after failing to put the ball on the ground in his rookie campaign of 2018. Chubb is very consistent, and he could take another step forward in 2020. But again, Hunt will not be suspended for eight games like last season, and the Browns have a lot of mouths to feed among the skill positions, so a huge jump in production for Chub seems unlikely.

Is Nick Chubb worth a 2020 NFL MVP bet?

Again, Hunt’s presence for a full season of games means Chubb won’t be the workhorse. He could potentially see a bump in average yards per carry, but expect a decrease in overall production as they give him more breathers. Add in the fact a quarterback has won this award seven seasons in a row, and the Browns should pass quite frequently with QB Baker Mayfield, WRs Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry, as well as newly acquired TE Austin Hooper, and it’s fair to project Chubb with about 1,500 rushing yards and 300 receiving yards, or close to his 2019 numbers. Is that MVP-worthy? Not even close.

2020 NFL MVP Odds: Is Matthew Stafford worth a bet?

Analyzing the betting odds to be named the NFL’s 2020 MVP, with a look at whether Matthew Stafford is worthy of a bet this season.

Do you think Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford has what it takes to win the 2020 NFL MVP?

Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson ran away with the 2019 NFL MVP, as the exciting, young quarterback flashed all season long with his legs and his strong arm. In the past couple of seasons we have seen a bit of a changing of the guard at the quarterback position, as the MVP has landed in the laps of two young, up-and-coming stars after being dominated for years by long-term veterans.

Let’s examine Stafford’s MVP chances, the BetMGM NFL futures odds around it happening and whether or not Stafford is worth a bet.

Recent NFL MVP winners

Stafford will be looking to join the ranks of recent winners Jackson (2019), Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (2018) and QB Tom Brady (2017), then of the New England Patriots. The good news for Stafford is that a quarterback has won the MVP in seven straight seasons, and 12 of the previous 13 years. The bad news is that the award has been trending toward younger, more mobile signal callers in recent seasons.

Matthew Stafford’s 2020 NFL MVP odds

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated April 16th at 10 a.m. ET.

Stafford (+5000) is a long shot for MVP. There are 15 quarterbacks listed with lesser odds than the Detroit signal caller, and 18 total players with better odds. Mahomes (+325) is the favorite, followed by Jackson (+500), Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson (+500) and New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (+1400). In the NFC Central, Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (+1600) and Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins (+4000) have lower odds, while Chicago Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky (+8000) is the clear-cut underdog in the division.

Matthew Stafford’s stats

Stafford has 11 NFL seasons under his belt, all in the Motor City, but he was limited to eight games in 2019 due to fractured bones in his back. Stafford had played eight consecutive 16-game seasons before 2019, so it was shocking to see him sidelined since he has been one of the most durable players in the NFL. Stafford was on his way to a potential career season last year, throwing for 2,499 yards and 19 touchdowns with just five interceptions in the eight games before departing, and he was sacked just 18 times. His 106.0 QB Rating was a career high.

Is Matthew Stafford worth a 2020 NFL MVP bet?

Stafford, who is now 32 years old, will be coming off a major injury for the first time in his career. He isn’t mobile at all, and should be even less so after his back ailment. Most of the monumental moves for the Lions in free agency have been on the defensive side of the ball, particularly in the secondary, although OT Halapoulivaati Vaitai bolsters the O-line and gives Stafford more peace of mind.

Still, MVP? He was on his way to career type numbers in 2019, and projected over a 16-game season he would have flirted with 5,000 passing yards and 38 TDs. Can he do it in 2020? He has a stud wideout in WR Kenny Golladay, while RB Kerryon Johnson should be back healthy to make the offense a bit more balanced. After Golladay there is a steep drop in talent at wide receiver. Unless the team makes a splash with another playmaker, there might not be enough skill position talent for Stafford to seriously be considered for MVP.

2020 NFL MVP Odds: Is Odell Beckham Jr. worth a bet?

Analyzing the betting odds to be named the NFL’s 2020 MVP, with a look at whether Odell Beckham Jr. is worthy of a bet this season.

Do you think Cleveland Browns WR Odell Beckham Jr. has what it takes to win the 2020 NFL MVP? Let’s examine his chances, the BetMGM NFL futures odds around it happening and whether or not Beckham is worth a bet.

Beckham came over to the Browns from the New York Giants in a huge trade last offseason. The expectations went through the roof in Cleveland; however, First Energy Stadium was once again a Factory of Sadness, and Beckham and several other new offensive weapons were unable to jell. Not only did they fall short of lofty expectations, but the Browns were also still unable to produce a winning record.

Recent NFL MVP winners

Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson picked up the MVP award in 2019, while last season’s Super Bowl MVP, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, was the winner in 2018. QB Tom Brady, then of the New England Patriots, claimed the 2017 award.

If Beckham, or any other wideout, was to win the 2020 MVP, it would be historic. Since 1954 we have never had a wide receiver win the award. We have had a fullback, an offensive tackle, a kicker, a linebacker and a defensive tackle win the award at least once, but no wideouts.

Odell Beckham Jr.’s 2020 NFL MVP odds

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Thursday, March 26 at 10:40 a.m. ET.

Beckham (+12500) has extremely long odds as he enters the 2020 season, while Browns QB Baker Mayfield (+4000) is the favorite among all Browns, followed by RB Nick Chubb (+8000).

Wide receiver just isn’t a position which has been seriously considered for MVP, as generally, quarterbacks steal the show. In fact, a quarterback has won in each of the past seven seasons, and 12 of the past 13. Beckham is tied with Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams, Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill and Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones for the second-best odds among wideouts, with New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas (+10000) priced as the favorite among WRs.

Odell Beckham Jr.’s stats

Beckham certainly didn’t post MVP caliber numbers in 2019, his first as a member of the Browns. While he finished the seasons with 74 receptions, 1,035 yards and four touchdowns, it was rather mediocre by today’s standards.

He posted 161 receiving yards and a touchdown in Week 2 against the New York Jets in his old home stadium, and that was just one of two 100-yard performances on the season. It was the only time he had at least six grabs, 100 or more yards and a score in the same contest.

Is Odell Beckham Jr. worth a 2020 NFL MVP bet?

In a word, no. Betting on a wide receiver to win the MVP award is simply throwing good money away. Beckham is a tremendous downfield talent with speed to burn, but if he and the Cleveland offense improve exponentially in 2020, it’s likely Mayfield would get more attention for the award than Beckham or any other skill position player.

2020 NFL MVP Odds: Is Michael Thomas worth a bet?

Analyzing the betting odds to be named the NFL’s 2020 MVP, with a look at whether Michael Thomas is worthy of a bet this season.

Do you think New Orleans WR Michael Thomas has what it takes to win the 2020 NFL MVP?

Despite being months away from the NFL season, there are already odds for the 2020 NFL MVP. There are clear favorites and many long shots. Here we look at those MVP futures bets for the coming season and specifically Thomas.

Let’s examine his chances, the BetMGM NFL futures odds around it happening and whether or not Thomas is worth a bet.

Recent NFL MVP winners

The quarterback position dominates the award. A quarterback has won the last seven MVP awards and 12 of the last 13. The last five MVPs have been Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson (2019), Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes (2018), then-New England Patriots’ Tom Brady (2017), Atlanta Falcons’ Matt Ryan (2016) and then-Carolina Panthers’ Cam Newton (2015).

These quarterbacks all led their teams to the postseason and almost all led the NFL in some significant passing statistic. Jackson led the league with 36 touchdown passes, while throwing for 3,127 yards and rushing for 1,206 yards. In 2018, Mahomes led the league with 50 passing TDs, while finishing second in passing yards (5,097). in 2017, Brady threw for 32 TDs and an NFL-best 4,577 passing yards.

Meanwhile, a wide receiver has never won the MVP since the Associated Press started handing out the award in 1957.

Michael Thomas’ 2020 NFL MVP odds

Thomas is a long shot at +10000, but is the favorite among all other receivers. Four wideouts check in at +12500. They are Davante Adams (Green Bay Packers), Odell Beckham Jr. (Cleveland Browns), Julio Jones (Atlanta Falcons) and Tyreek Hill (Chiefs).

Looking to place a bet on the 2020 NFL MVP? Place your legal sports wagers online at BetMGM. Bet now!

Michael Thomas’ stats

In 2019, Thomas set an NFL single-season record with 149 receptions. His 1,725 receiving yards led the league and are the seventh-highest total in any season. He was the biggest offensive weapon on a Saints team that went 13-3 in the regular season and won the NFC South Division.

Is Michael Thomas worth a 2020 NFL MVP bet?

Unfortunately, history is against Thomas. He set NFL records last season and was the Offensive Player of the Year. However, even if he were to replicate those numbers in 2020, he probably wouldn’t get a single MVP vote. The votes would go to his quarterback, Drew Brees.

While the +10000 offers a payout of 100 times your investment, betting on Thomas is a bet against history.

2020 NFL MVP Odds: Is Joe Burrow worth a bet?

Analyzing the betting odds to be named the NFL’s 2020 MVP, with a look at whether Joe Burrow is worthy of a bet this season.

Do you think QB Joe Burrow has what it takes to win the 2020 NFL MVP? Let’s examine his chances, the BetMGM NFL futures odds around it happening and whether or not Burrow is worth a bet.

Recent NFL MVP winners

Burrow plays the right position, as each of the last seven and 12 of the last 13 league MVPs have been quarterbacks. The trend has also been young quarterbacks winning it. The last two league MVPs — Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson and Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes — were in their second NFL season.

With few exceptions, MVP quarterbacks lead the league in at least one significant passing statistic. They without fail lead playoff teams. Mahomes threw for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns. Jackson had over 3,500 passing yards and over 1,000 rushing yards.

MVP quarterbacks put up big numbers and win.

Joe Burrow’s 2020 NFL MVP odds

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Thursday, April 9 at 10 a.m. ET.

Burrow, who will be a rookie in 2020, is one of the long shots. He is given +10000 odds to win this year’s MVP award. That is far from the +325 for Mahomes or the +500 odds for Jackson or Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson.

Burrow has the same odds as Indianapolis Colts backup QB Jacoby Brissett, Carolina Panthers QB Teddy Bridgewater, New York Jets QB Sam Darnold and New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas, among others.

Looking to place a bet on the 2020 NFL MVP? Place your legal sports wagers online at BetMGM. Bet now!

Joe Burrow stats

Burrow is certainly going to be the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft at the end of April. He is coming off a record-setting year in college with LSU, winning the Heisman Trophy and leading his team to a national championship.

He had 5,671 passing yards, 60 touchdown passes and only six interceptions. He also had another five rushing touchdowns.

Is Joe Burrow worth a 2020 NFL MVP bet?

Burrow will not put up those numbers as a rookie in the NFL. He will likely be the starting quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals, who were the worst team in the league in 2019 to earn the No. 1 draft pick.

Rookie quarterbacks don’t put up big numbers. Only Cam NewtonAndrew Luck and Jameis Winston have thrown for more than 4,000 yards as a rookie and the rookie passing touchdown record is 27 (Baker Mayfield).

Mahomes was the youngest MVP in league history. There hasn’t been a rookie MVP since 1957.

The potential payout of 100 times your investment might be tempting, but you would be expecting Burrow to do things as a rookie no rookie has ever done. He would have to be as good as the best quarterbacks in the league and turn around the worst team in football.

Burrow isn’t worth a bet.

2020 NFL MVP Odds: Is Jared Goff worth a bet?

Analyzing the betting odds to be named the NFL’s 2020 MVP, with a look at whether Jared Goff is worthy of a bet this season.

Do you think Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff has what it takes to win the 2020 NFL MVP?

Goff was a candidate for the award during the first half of the 2018 season, performing as one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL. But since then, his play has fallen off, he’s struggled with accuracy and has issues when he isn’t afforded sound protection up front.

More will be on his shoulders in 2020 with RB Todd Gurley gone, which makes Goff an interesting MVP candidate after a down year.

Let’s examine his chances, the BetMGM NFL futures odds around it happening and whether or not Goff is worth a bet.

Recent NFL MVP winners

The NFL might as well rename the MVP award to “MVQB”: Most Valuable Quarterback. A QB has won the award in each of the last seven years, which is hardly surprising considering the importance of the position and the role quarterbacks play on offense. Much of their teams’ success comes down to whether they succeed in a given season.

Last season’s winner, Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson, isn’t a good comparison for Goff because Jackson is a true dual-threat quarterback, but in 2018, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes won the award after throwing for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns. Tom Brady’s numbers for the New England Patriots in 2017 weren’t as gaudy (4,577 yards and 32 TDs), which shows a team’s success plays a big role, too.

Goff has thrown for at least 4,600 yards in each of the last two seasons, so yardage totals aren’t an issue for him, but he’s never had more than 32 touchdown passes in a season and had just 22 in 2019.

Jared Goff’s 2020 NFL MVP odds

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday, April 8 at 12:40 a.m. ET.

GOFF is +4000 to win MVP, tied with Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield and Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins. That’s surprisingly behind two NFC West rival QBs and three running backs. Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray and San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo are both +2500, while New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley, Tennessee Titans RB Derrick Henry and Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey are each +3300.

Jared Goff’s stats

In the last three seasons, Goff has averaged 4,377 passing yards, 27 passing touchdowns and 12 interceptions per year. Those are decent numbers, but such a stat line isn’t nearly enough to win MVP.

His best season came in 2018 when he threw for 4,688 yards and 32 TDs with 12 picks. His passer rating was an impressive 101.1, far higher than his 2019 mark of 86.5.

Is Jared Goff worth a 2020 NFL MVP bet?

The Rams aren’t in full rebuild mode, but they certainly don’t look like the powerhouse they were in 2018. Goff’s play really fell off last season behind a shaky offensive line, and there are minimal signs that the line will be any better next season.

However, with how much the Rams are going to rely on Goff now that Gurley is gone, their success will have a lot to do with how he plays – which helps his MVP case if they finish well above .500.

GOFF IS WORTH A SMALL WAGER AT +4000, but don’t bet the house by any means.

2020 NFL MVP Odds: Is Baker Mayfield worth a bet?

Analyzing the betting odds to be named the NFL’s 2020 MVP, with a look at whether Baker Mayfield is worthy of a bet this season.

Do you think Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield has what it takes to win the 2020 NFL MVP? Let’s examine his chances, the BetMGM NFL futures odds around it happening and whether or not Mayfield is worth a bet.

The Browns offense was expected to be a juggernaut in 2019 after adding all kinds of key pieces, including WR Odell Beckham Jr. The offense was rather uneven, the defense suffered a rash of injuries and even suspensions, and it was another non-playoff season in Cleveland. Fellow AFC North QB Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens was able to run away – literally – with the 2019 MVP award.

Oddly enough, Mayfield actually engineered the Browns to their most impressive win of the season in Baltimore, which was easily the worst loss for Jackson and the Ravens. The talent is there for Mayfield, but can he be consistent?

Recent NFL MVP winners

Jackson had a dominant season for the Ravens in 2019. Last season’s Super Bowl MVP, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, won the league’s MVP in 2018, while QB Tom Brady, then of the New England Patriots, claimed the 2017 award.

Quarterbacks have won the award in each of the last seven seasons, and 12 of the previous 13.

Baker Mayfield’s 2020 NFL MVP odds

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Thursday, March 26 at 10:30 a.m. ET.

The flamboyant quarterback enters his third NFL season, and Mayfield (+4000) has rather long odds to win the MVP award. There are 12 quarterbacks with better odds. Mahomes (+325) is the favorite, with Jackson (+500) and Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson (+500) next in line.

For what it’s worth, Mayfield has the second-best odds among AFC North quarterbacks. Rookie QB Joe Burrow (+4000), who is expected to be drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals first overall, is offered at the same price. Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (+6600) has the longest odds in the division among QBs.

Baker Mayfield’s stats

If Mayfield is to seriously contend for the MVP he is going to have to cut down his miscues. While he passed for 3,827 yards, setting a new career-high, he saw his touchdowns decrease from 27 to 22 from 2018, and he ended up throwing 22 interceptions. It wasn’t all his fault, however, as he was running for his life most of the season, and he was sacked 40 times.

His completion percentage dropped from 63.8 in his rookie season of 2018 to just 59.4% in 2019, so that’s an area he’ll also need vast improvement.

Is Baker Mayfield worth a 2020 NFL MVP bet?

Mayfield is a big long shot, and he didn’t display anything close to MVP form in most outings last season. Still, he has impressive weapons around him in RBs Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, as well as top-notch WRs Beckham and Jarvis Landry. The Browns also went out and grabbed TE Austin Hooper to give Mayfield another outstanding weapon in the red zone.

If the Browns are able to grab some protection along the offensive line, either via the NFL draft, trade or free agency, Mayfield should show improvement; however, you’re better off going another way if you want a serious shot at a winning MVP ticket.

Do you think Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey has what it takes to win the 2020 NFL MVP? McCaffrey is one of 60 players listed with some sort of odds to win it. Let’s examine his chances, the BetMGM NFL futures odds around it happening and whether or not Christian McCaffrey is worth a bet.

It is still months away from the start of the NFL season but it isn’t too early to think about who might be this season’s MVP. In fact, now might be the best time to place your wager on a futures bet for the 2020 NFL MVP.

Recent NFL MVP winners

The NFL is a quarterback’s league and it shows in the MVP awards. The last seven league MVPs and 12 of the last 13 have been quarterbacks. Running backs have won it four times this century. Quarterbacks who win almost always come from playoff teams and almost always lead the league in a significant passing statistic.

Running back MVPs since 2000 consist of Adrian Peterson (2012), LaDainian Tomlinson (2006), Shaun Alexander (2005) and Marshall Faulk (2000).

McCaffrey was one of the best offensive players in the entire league in 2019. He rushed for 1,387 yards and 15 touchdowns on 4.8 yards per attempt. He also had 116 catches for 1,005 yards and another four scores.

He became only the third player in NFL history to have 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season. He was basically the Panthers’ only offensive weapon, as Carolina was a bad team in 2019. The Panthers finished 5-11 and in last place in the NFC South.

Is Christian McCaffrey worth a 2020 NFL MVP bet?

McCaffrey is set for another monster season, but in terms of a potential MVP candidate, it will be tough. The last three running backs who won it all rushed for at least 1,800 yards in their MVP seasons. Alexander and Tomlinson set NFL records for rushing touchdowns. Peterson had more than 2,000 yards.

All were on playoff teams.

McCaffrey very well could have another 1,000/1,000 season but the Panthers are not expected to be good, even with the addition of quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

It is just too hard for running backs to get the credit they deserve in the NFL now. As long as there are dynamic quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson and Russell Wilson, a wager on a running back is probably wasted money, even if the potential payout is 33 times the investment.

2020 NFL MVP Odds: Is Jimmy Garoppolo worth a bet?

Analyzing the betting odds to be named the NFL’s 2020 MVP, with a look at whether Jimmy Garoppolo is worthy of a bet this season.

Do you think San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo has what it takes to win the 2020 NFL MVP?

We are still months away from the 2020 NFL season but it isn’t too early to start projecting who will step up and be the MVP in the upcoming season.

Garoppolo had his first full season as a starting quarterback in 2019 and managed to take the 49ers to the Super Bowl. He had one of the better statistical seasons among quarterbacks and enters 2020 with decent odds to win the season’s MVP.

Let’s examine his chances, the BetMGM NFL futures odds around it happening and whether or not Garoppolo is worth a bet.

Recent NFL MVP winners

The last seven league MVPs and 12 of the last 13 have been quarterbacks. Each of the last four MVPs led the NFL in some major passing statistic. 2019 winner Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens) and 2018 winner Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs) had the most touchdown passes. 2017 winner Tom Brady, then with the New England Patriots, led the NFL in passing yards. 2016 MVP Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons had the highest passer rating. In Cam Newton’s 2015 MVP season, he led the Carolina Panthers to a 15-1 regular season. Aaron Rodgers’ 2014 MVP season with the Green Bay Packers was highlighted by 38 TD passes and only five interceptions.

Garoppolo is not really a favorite for the award, but at +2500, only nine players have shorter odds. All are quarterbacks. Mahomes is the favorite at +325, followed by Jackson and Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson, who are both +500. New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees is +1400 and Rodgers is +1600, while four players are listed at +2000.

Jimmy Garoppolo’s stats

Garoppolo played a full 16-game season for the first time since he entered the league in 2014, and he was very good. He threw for 3,978 yards and 27 touchdowns with 13 interceptions, leading the 49ers to a 13-3 record, an NFC West Division title, an NFC championship and a Super Bowl appearance –  they lost to the Chiefs 31-20.

Is Jimmy Garoppolo worth a 2020 NFL MVP bet?

As good as Garoppolo was, his success was largely attributed to the offense around him and the 49ers’ defense. He had one of the best rushing attacks to protect him and the best tight end in the league in George Kittle. However, Garoppolo still did not quite reach 4,000 passing yards and did not lead the league in any significant statistic. Because the offense will continue to be predicated on the running game, Garoppolo likely will not be in a position to lead the NFL in major passing stats. He will lead his team to wins but many will question whether he is the reason or simply the caretaker for the offense. Garoppolo will have a good season, but probably isn’t worth your wager as a potential MVP, even with a potential payout of 25 times your investment.
